For me the differences between Season 1 and 2 are noticeable but the difference between Season 2 and 3 are drastic. I really enjoyed Season 3 cuz it was the 1st time I watched Atlanta with my mom. As I tried to explain the show's dynamic and normal flow the show kept throwing us curveballs and that was really cool. It kept me from being able to predict or see the ending coming and it was refreshing to just be like dafuq just happened?! Are they eating that?! Did she really just do that?! Here's a new hot take on Sesson 3. It hits different because it's an Addendum to Season 2. It takes the bizarre of season 1 and expands on it as well. It goes into Afro Surrealism. One UA-camr stated that the characters know something is wrong. Its further emphasized by the first scene of the season with the black man something doesn't seem right. Think of the beginning of each season is the start of a thesis and the end is a "Well, what have we learned?" Season 3 ends in a bizarre sour note taking its own formula and turning it on its head. But you can say "Rich Wigga Poor Wigga" can be the "What have we learned." Moment with Aaron literally giving us the audience a glance. To wrap up the season. But at the same time it erupts Van's character as an addendum to "Helen" and "Champaign Papi." We also have to realize that some of these anthologies weren't all dreams. They happened. It leaves the question "What state will Georgia be in when they return?" Remember that this world is different where Donald Glover exists as a seperate entity than Earn, Justin Bieber is black, Michael Vick, races people outside of clubs as a hustle, and invisible cars exist. Most importantly season 3 is Wish fulfillment.
I don’t know if you missed it, but there is a post credit scene in the final episode that ties the main storyline together with the “black mirror-esque” episodes. It blew my mind.
Really well done, and nice to know I''m not alone in my love for this show and this season.Completely caught me off guard. So deep and so beautiful. Liked and subscribed.
5:00 you hit it right on the head, that was literally the thesis of the entire show. I think what makes season 3 so different is it focuses on white people Alot people forget glovers goal for Atlanta was to show actual black people how we really are. I think now he's trying to do that more with white America, which is why everyone hates it lol Either way I loved this especially how you used so many references, I think you won a subscriber
Season 3 is hard to get through because of the anthology episodes and it not being what S1/S2 were. Taking the main characters from their main setting, making spin off episodes, and being really deep. Still a solid season regardless just really different
Great video essay, thank you. I loved this season as well for how it took big creative risks and dug into topics that need to be discussed. 👀Could you do an analysis of seasons 1 and 2?
I can certainly try lol. Season 2 is a pure piece of art for me so I'd have to really think about how I'd want to approach it. My next few videos are going to stray around some topics adjacent to traditional media analysis such as internet culture (which is my next video). So it might take me a little while before I get back to an Atlanta video but it will definitely happen.
Thank you so much for the feedback! That means a lot, I was pretty nervous putting it out and I’ve looked at it so much that all I see is the mistakes now 😅

I honestly was a lil turned off by season 3. I recognized that there was a deeper meaning and a connected theme but I just couldn't figure out. Your breakdown has been an amazing help and I'm going to rewatch it now 🤝
Wow. That's very kind of you to say. This was my first attempt at a video essay for UA-cam however I did attend film school for a year about a decade ago so I understood the basics of what I was trying to do. It took a lot of research and using other peoples sources to put it together so I only collected stuff together. Thanks for subscribing!
The problem in Surrealist works is that once you go there, there is no turning back, its almost like "It Was All A Dream" trope. Did that happen or was just another surrealist bit? What is the point in that on the story?
I can certainly see that argument. I still think there was an intended meaning behind the surrealist moments, but that could be completely misguided. Thanks for sharing your opinion on my video!
I hope this doesn't get buried in your half a thousand comments, and I know I'm just one person, but I thought your analysis on Atlanta was brilliant and with Mr morale getting closer and closer to becoming possibly my favorite Kendrick album I would love to hear your thoughts on it so yes PLEASE DO IT
To me, this was definitely my favorite season of Atlanta. My slight complaint would be wishing that the one off episodes were they’re own show separate from this season. It took away from showing more of the main storyline, but they were all great. Overall, this season pushed the boundaries in every way a show can from directing, writing, acting, messaging, cameos. Every episode showed perspectives not shown on tv. Situations that are happening now, shown in a satire that can relate to things that have happened. They challenged the viewers in ways they haven’t done before. Some people probably won’t fuck with that choice. It was a creative choice that takes a lot of creatives to bring together with Donald Glover being the center piece to it all. This season was almost an extension to “This is America” to me. Idk if the guy mentions it in the video, but I felt that at the end of watching the last scene. Great season and can’t wait for the final season
Not really. The anthology episodes add to the main narrative. These events took place mostly in Atlanta while the main cast was in Europe. For ex., earn is the beneficiary of the yt guy who was in the picture (finale outro), the same guy who died in the pool, and the same guy from the beginning of the s3 1st episode
@@jadacampbell9331 I get that they tied into the main narrative. And I loved them. But for me, I would’ve liked it if it was separate. We would get a great one off episode, and the next main story episode would be ok compared to the one off. It wasn’t always the case, but that’s just I nitpick of mine
Great job, great video. Keep up the good work. I actually don't have too much feedback because the only thing that could be improved is the technical quality which is low due to the fact that you are new to this. But this isn't a necessary improvement, this video is already better than 90% of video essays I see. You could have extended this honestly and made it like 2 hours long and I would definitely have watched the whole thing. Keep doing what you're doing!
I think we saw a lot of progression in the characters of the show. We see their friendships evolve without losing loyalty. It exposes the come up and bribing of selling out to the culture in the journey of a rapper and his/her friends. This has happened to so many rappers. This ser toies exposes everything people turn a blind eye to
I didn't know some of the episodes are based on true stories. even though season3 has less narrative about paperboy, I really enjoyed how they brought various thoughts into visualized episodes. some are bit gross, intensive but deep and intersting at the same time. I have a respect to the writers and producers. can't wait to watch the next season! and by the way thanks for your recap!!
I was born in Gainesville GA. Grew up skiing and swimming in that lake. In 5th grade a classmate (a black boy named Ramon) drowned. The next year everybody got swimming lessons. I didn't know about the displacement until this.
Thank you! I'm very interested to see the direction season 4 takes. I do understand where some of the people that didn't enjoy it as much are coming from although I'm inclined to disagree. I think seeing how DG and the crew choose to wrap up the series will be the signifier for how much staying power we can expect to see from it.
Wow I can’t believe I didn’t pick up on the clipboard and the shape of a body in a trash bag. I just figured they were throwing away some trash and getting out of dodge
Overall, the season three was the weakest of the series. I did not like the anthology episodes. I understand they probably due to Covid, the actors’ schedules, or something else. Nevertheless, we could have fantastic episodes that character’s episodes presented. Take the Darius’ side story where he takes a reporter to a Nigerian restaurant. We could have an entire episode that explored more. Or have an episode that explains why Earn left Harvard. An episode that shows Van’s mental breakdown before she joined the others in Europe. You can have meaningful messages while providing wondering character moments. There was some potential but it was lost. I still respect those who love season three. For me, it could have been great.
I definitely see the merit behind the points you're making. I think a lot of why they took this season in the direction they did can be explained when considering that the primary cast has much busier schedules now. So while it's a technical answer and doesn't feel as good, I have a feeling that is why we got these "anthology" episodes. You're right that we lost some connection to our main character this season.
Idk i dont like the 3rd season like i know its growth but like J. Cole said theres beauty in the struggle and idk it felt more real and relatable during the first 2 seasons
I can say that I absolutely loved Season 3, and especially loved the standalone episodes (Trini to the Bone being my favorite). However, I wouldve been pissed off having to wait weeks for an episode that actually advanced the storyline. I got into this show after it was all over, thankfully, so I was able to binge everything.
Waiting week by week definitely has it's disadvantages but at the time of Season 3 airing being able to reflect on each episode is what led to me being inspired to make this video in the first place. Currently going through the weekly format with Shogun has got me doing the same and I'll have a video on that soon now that it just ended. When comparing that to Fallout which dropped two weeks ago and I've already binged all of I think I can say I prefer the weekly format at the time of airing. It allows for the conversation to be spread out and keeps everyone on the same page for a little while longer. Gotta say I miss the Game of Thrones days with friends hosting watch parties and the twitter chatter after each episode.
we got healthy doses of surrealism throughout, but mostly just a couple episodes focused on it. these season it's like over half the season is focused on it. can't wait to see what your take is on all this
Great video. One correction the restaurant the woman opened was a Nigerian restaurant not a Jamaican restaurant. Otherwise the vide was amazing. Well done!
i enjoyed the anthology episodes much more than i did the story with the main cast, just wish we got all of one or the other instead of half of both. just felt very unsatisfied with the progressing story of the main cast
I feel like this season was definitely unique but it fell flat for me way more times than I would have liked or expected. It just felt like it never really left a mark on me as much as I felt like it could by the end of the runtime. Not underwritten necessarily always, but definitely very loose a lot of the times. I feel like it had interesting ideas that could’ve been more fully explored or fleshed out or just spent more time on in general. But then again I feel like the previous seasons were far enough for me not to remember them all that clearly, so … I dont know. I remember Atlanta more fondly through then what I experienced this season. Granted, I do feel like this episode highlighted out all of the best parts of this season which was cool.
Agreed man. They definitely won’t have a huge impact of remembrance as season 1 and 2 cause those first two had that magic of surrealism, almost like you were there experiencing those events with them. But I’ll give it to season 3 for still being entertaining and changed theme. Felt like I was watching a whole other show.
Thanks for the correction. Yeah It was a script mistake that I completely didn't catch until the upload. I'll make a pinned comment for it I think. Nigerian Jollof, very embarrassing mistake on my end but oh well.
Ha! Love that you used Tony on his horse in the living room from _The Sopranos'_ "Test Dream" for the Surrealism tag... I loved the third season of _Atlanta,_ as well (except for the last episode, unfortunately 😕)! As a light-skinned Arab-American, who is sometimes considered "white" and sometimes considered a racial slur, I couldn't agree more with this season's "thesis statement", as you properly named it. It's what I've thought so often, but never stated so well! _"We're all from some 'hood..."_ 🤣 Edit: Would love a video on Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers!
I don't if this has been said before but I feel like Atlanta its like a the live human version of boondocks. They have the same kind of vibes and underlying themes.
my social studies teacher back in 8th grade had a story about how when she was a girl she was at lake lanier and was swimming and she got pulled under by something
Took a long hiatus because life got crazy on me which is just how things go. Getting ready to return to making content though and planning to be more consistent this time. Glad you liked it!
Nice to see you trying video essays, this is a great job for a first attempt! I would look into adjusting your mic settings as the audio got a little muddy at times, also certain sentences could've been annunciated better. Still really good job for a first try. Keep going!
Thanks for the tips; I'll keep that in mind. I'm still learning the ropes and was really nervous about posting this, so thanks for the feedback. I know it's far from perfect.
Atlanta is what it is because of the inclusion of the meaning social critical analysis into the everyday life of the characters. Even though the cinematography, style, direction and writing are on point on this one what makes it not as endearing as before is that those analysis are on those specific episodes and not centered around the characters and overall story.
This is a factor and a commendable one. See the folks on this thread whining about it not following convention focusing totally on the lead characters? It shakes up your ideas of what episodic TV should be and removes the comfortable path most are expecting. It is good to not be as endearing.
The One thing I've noticed is that there are a LOT More White Folk in this season. Like A Whole episode of White characters which is what you've categorized as 'White Gilt" I guess. Hey, It Got Him His Award!
This season was a little disappointing in my opinion. Too few scenes with Darius or Earn. The Anthology Episodes were nice but they stole too much time from the main characters. We know there is only one season left so I hope this time they don't do this again. Maybe it was like a pilot test for something like a spinoff show because I would watch that but I wanted to see much more from the main characters.
Me too, like that had me upset. My girlfriend only watched one episode of season 3 and that just threw her off. I only got to episode 3 and that was it. Cause Atlanta isn’t what it used to be. What happened to every main character journey and build up so far?
You should still watch the rest. It was still a good season but plot wise a short one. Also season 4 will be released and not in a few years like the last one.

Alot people forget glovers goal for Atlanta was to show actual black people how we really are. I think now he's trying to do that more with white America, which is why everyone hates it lol
Either way I loved this especially how you used so many references, I think you won a subscriber
But the thing is, its not a critical look on white people, its a shallow critique.
@@craigj.7035 you think so?
@@craigj.7035 it is a critical look
@@craigj.7035 i would say its a mixed bag of both
Lmao hell no that wasnt Donald glovers goal. U people are really fucked in the head then.
Superb video. Impressive since you're new. Keep making Atlanta stuff if possible, it's my favourite show out rn.
Watching that woman fight back tears broke my heart… Thinking you’re protecting the children all to find out the opposite HAS to be a gut punch
This was an excellent take on atlanta... I appreciate you doing this video.
Thank you so much for the feedback! That means a lot, I was pretty nervous putting it out and I’ve looked at it so much that all I see is the mistakes now 😅
I was looking for a video of this season and man, I found this and it was a really good one. Loved it!
Damn, as far as a comment goes I can really appreciate the care and time you put into you videos, glad I came across it. looking forward to what you got in store for the future!
Be well
Thank you! I actually made quite a few mistakes and my editing could use a lot of work imo but I appreciate the kind words. My goal is to continuously work to fix the mistakes of my previous work for my next piece for consistent improvement.
I love these types of videos and for your first one I can tell you that you do them very well, can't wait to see what more you have to offer. Wish you all the best in ur UA-cam journey
Love it glad u did this I tried explaining to my gf about the topics of episodes as we watched them and it basically fell on death ears but this will help educate much appreciated
I honestly was a lil turned off by season 3. I recognized that there was a deeper meaning and a connected theme but I just couldn't figure out. Your breakdown has been an amazing help and I'm going to rewatch it now 🤝
Bro you're amazing at this! Keep it up! I really enjoyed the video!
Thanks that’s very kind. I made some mistakes and have a lot to improve on but I hope I can offer something to the film essay commentary space.
Great start, keep it up brew!
Thanks, will do!
Damn this was good. Great writing and hittin' the edit marks. I feel like you had a copy of the Show Bible. Subscribed.
Wow. That's very kind of you to say. This was my first attempt at a video essay for UA-cam however I did attend film school for a year about a decade ago so I understood the basics of what I was trying to do. It took a lot of research and using other peoples sources to put it together so I only collected stuff together. Thanks for subscribing!
This breakdown is on point. So much so I am going to re -watch season 3
Very much appreciated! Let me know what you catch on the rewatch.
It was extremely eerie that Kevin Samuals died a few days prior to the episode he was in aired
@@MitraKesava The problem is that's the entire season. They basically threw away everything established for an art piece.
Not really. They had a healthy balance of realism and surrealism. If u didnt like it thats fine.
I watched this whole season high I don't regret it at all
Great video man! All the best on UA-cam
I enjoyed your commentary on this and take.
Wow thank you that means so much as this is the first video essay I’ve ever made!
I have a respect to the writers and producers. can't wait to watch the next season! and by the way thanks for your recap!!
glad to be a early viewer of this channel
I'm so glad you were here. The blow up is taking me aback but I'm planning my next move as I write this so stay tuned!
Subbed! Please make the Mr Morale video next! Keep making videos like these and you’ll blow up in no time📈
I was born in Gainesville GA. Grew up skiing and swimming in that lake. In 5th grade a classmate (a black boy named Ramon) drowned. The next year everybody got swimming lessons. I didn't know about the displacement until this.
Thank You for this bro. I'll watch this show now. I've seen about 5 episodes all together. This is genius 💎
Great Video and I love season 3 and excited to see how season 4 will be
Thank you! I'm very interested to see the direction season 4 takes. I do understand where some of the people that didn't enjoy it as much are coming from although I'm inclined to disagree. I think seeing how DG and the crew choose to wrap up the series will be the signifier for how much staying power we can expect to see from it.
Great video so far, also the background on the lake story is literally the real story of Lake Lanier
I think they didn't knew what to do with the Vanessa character.
Great review fam. Well done. Nigerian restaurant^^ btw
Wow I can’t believe I didn’t pick up on the clipboard and the shape of a body in a trash bag. I just figured they were throwing away some trash and getting out of dodge
It took me a few rewatches to catch it myself. Research for this went a little deep for this one, but there's a ton more I missed too.
ah yes, i found the next video essay to watch on my lunch break 🙏
Hope you enjoyed it!
Good breakdown of season 3
Thank you!
Good research and analysis. Thanks.
Outstanding video recap! Loved this.
Damn this really is live action boondocks
F’real though
Not true
That episode with Darius was self explanatory for us who understand gentrification.
I agree. Season three was weak as hell in the Atlanta TV series.
I definitely see the merit behind the points you're making. I think a lot of why they took this season in the direction they did can be explained when considering that the primary cast has much busier schedules now. So while it's a technical answer and doesn't feel as good, I have a feeling that is why we got these "anthology" episodes. You're right that we lost some connection to our main character this season.
princeton not harvard
Gotta say I miss the Game of Thrones days with friends hosting watch parties and the twitter chatter after each episode.
we got healthy doses of surrealism throughout, but mostly just a couple episodes focused on it. these season it's like over half the season is focused on it. can't wait to see what your take is on all this
Saison 2 still my favorite cause it’s hilarious
You know the guy . . . some of you are the guy. Well done sir.
If this was basketball Lake Lanier would be the greatest player ever. Grabbing all 3 spots.
Waiting to see your review of season 4!
Loved the vid bro I agree w u boi. keep up the good work
great video!! i loved this season so much
Good format! Well done!
YOOOOOO!!! I totally thought it gave black mirror vibes tooooo likeeee!!
Great video. One correction the restaurant the woman opened was a Nigerian restaurant not a Jamaican restaurant. Otherwise the vide was amazing. Well done!
Great video man
Thanks! That means a lot, I’m trying out here.
i loved it. It was so Atlanta. You never know what to expect and I love that
i enjoyed the anthology episodes much more than i did the story with the main cast, just wish we got all of one or the other instead of half of both. just felt very unsatisfied with the progressing story of the main cast
Y'know I do understand that criticism about the main character's storyline and of the season and kinda failed to mention that.
@@MitraKesava was still a really good analysis!! brought up a lot of good points i failed to mention in my own video essay lol
Nice vid, but quick note, that was a Nigerian restaurant. It says “naija bowl” on the sign. For future reference, naija = Nigeria(n)
Thanks for the correction. Yeah It was a script mistake that I completely didn't catch until the upload. I'll make a pinned comment for it I think. Nigerian Jollof, very embarrassing mistake on my end but oh well.
I was just about the type this cause i was like ' did he just say jamaican?' lool
_"We're all from some 'hood..."_ 🤣
Edit: Would love a video on Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers!
Please do an analysis for season 2
Planning to return to content creation this summer, uploading a video as we speak. I will definitely consider doing a Season 2 analysis.
@@MitraKesava we are waiting on it
I don't if this has been said before but I feel like Atlanta its like a the live human version of boondocks. They have the same kind of vibes and underlying themes.
I love the parallels to real life events
my social studies teacher back in 8th grade had a story about how when she was a girl she was at lake lanier and was swimming and she got pulled under by something
I really enjoyed this breakdown! I see you didn't get to touch on the episode with Kevin Samuel's. It would be interesting to hear your take on it...
manee this video fire as helllll
Yeah we need that kendrick album analysis from you my guy
Do you think you plan on making more videos? This is great
Took a long hiatus because life got crazy on me which is just how things go. Getting ready to return to making content though and planning to be more consistent this time. Glad you liked it!
@@MitraKesava That's understandable. I hope to see it in my sub box when it's ready!!
Amazing video! Subscribed immediately 👌🏻
This was probably my favourite season
Atlanta is what it is because of the inclusion of the meaning social critical analysis into the everyday life of the characters. Even though the cinematography, style, direction and writing are on point on this one what makes it not as endearing as before is that those analysis are on those specific episodes and not centered around the characters and overall story.
That's a really good point and potential flaw in the season for sure. I'm very curious to see if this is a choice that carries over in Season 4.
nailed it.
This is a factor and a commendable one. See the folks on this thread whining about it not following convention focusing totally on the lead characters? It shakes up your ideas of what episodic TV should be and removes the comfortable path most are expecting. It is good to not be as endearing.
@@MitraKesava I don't see that as a flaw but as an artistic choice. Looking forward to season 4.
The One thing I've noticed is that there are a LOT More White Folk in this season. Like A Whole episode of White characters which is what you've categorized as 'White Gilt" I guess. Hey, It Got Him His Award!
Season 3 ep 4 has to be one of my favorite episodes of television
The episodes on there own are good, but I really wanted to see more of the main cast stories.
Season 3 was to artsy. Great stories but when you were expecting the paoerboi story to advance I was like wtf is this episode??
