      100% this. Without infantilizing her, I think she had very little opportunity to become acclimated to internet culture and dangers before prison. For an average person the sudden internet fame after isolation would be dangerous, but extremely so for someone high-profile with a past of munchausen by proxy abuse

    It’s an eye-opening realization when you do consider the fact that her possibilities, more than anything professionally, are so limited. I think we forget that she’ll most likely struggle to find her grounding in the world, and I can only hope that she can heal and live peacefully. She’s complex and layered, so nobody has the right to expect anything from her. Especially since she’s already gone through enough. Excellent video, always a delight!

    i think true crime (trauma and pain of others) shouldn’t be dramatized. not in tv shows, movies, or dramatic true crime content. this is someone’s pain. what gives these people the right to create narratives out of the pain of others. it’s disgusting to the victim or survivor. i like factual true crime that isn’t dramatized. anyways random tangent, thanks for reading.

    18:25 i find it strange that many people gloss over the guy being disabled. two (iirc) different times he was screened for mental illness he was diagnosed with asd-2 and limited capacity to make decisions due to low iq and other factors. not saying it absolves him of whatever he did, he has to deal with consequences of his own actions, but it's weird how very few people in the true crime realm mention that he has technically limited capabilities to make informed decisions. so saying 'my husband would call cops and not help me kill my mother' when you're aware the guy who agreed to help you is not on the same level of independent thought as most adults. if that makes any sense... i know the whole genre is poisoned by ableism, bootlicking etc, so i guess it's not really that surprising... there's a lot of nuance in this whole thing and i feel like social media discourse very much is not a place to hold nuanced discussions. it's all very b&w, good people can do no wrong, bad people are bad 100% and can't be reformed etc

    The idea of the "perfect victim" reminds me a lot of Jaycee Lee Dugard's case. Her first book after being found alive and the trials for her kidnappers was very well received; she talked about her 18 years of being kidnapped, SAed, abused, everything. In her second book though, she wrote about trying to build a life for herself, and doing a lot of things for the first time that most people take for granted; this book was not well received. I think when you're a victim, there is a loud minority (maybe majority) in the true crime space that has expectations of you, and when you don't meet them, then they turn on you. It's cruel and it's performative on the part of the audience to act caring, but ultimately want something from victims. You also see it a lot when victim's family members don't act "sad enough" or give emotional queues at the "right times."

    The case of Gypsy Rose lived rent free in my head for years. I was happy to see her get out of prison. But, this? This influencer life? I'm frightened for her. She didn't experience social media's growth organically like many of us have. I can't even imagine how this all feels for her.
    Losing the right to vote for felons is different in different states. Additionally, in two states, they can vote from prison.

That being said the best thing for her is for her to be free now that she’s out, but with ALL this attention on her I don’t know if that’s possible. If I were her it would overwhelm me and I’d HATE it. She went from being under her mother’s control to now being under the microscope of millions. I can’t imagine how that would feel

  • @sleepyokami
    @sleepyokami 8 місяців тому +126

    You covered exactly how I felt. While we can sit here and say she didn't deserve any of the abuse, to say what she did was right is also not correct OR what Gypsy seems to want. I saw a tik tok she'd made where she talks about regretting what she did. Any interview of hers she says she misses her mom. I think she is performing in a similar way she did for her mom. Like a trauma response. I fear the same fate for her as parts of Jaycee Dugard's story where she struggled with healing because of the hyper televised response to everything she did.
    Gypsy doesn't believe what she did was right, and it's weird for people to try to praise her for that.

      People do that all the time and it pisses me off when they do it to regular everyday people as well. We can't all know everything about every company we make purchases from. Seems like a wierd thing for people to demand accountability for. I understand when its an influencer that's doing a sponsorship or something because they should do research as part of their job, but a middle aged mother of 2 ordering some bibs from an online vendor that once donated to an organization that is anti planned parenthood is crazy lol.

    It’s insane that people expect her to not regret what happened to her mom, I agree that it was a form of self defence and her mom was a horrid abuser but being involved in taking anyone’s life, especially someone you know very personally would take a huge mental toll on anyone. Idk it just seems obvious that she viewed it as a last resort

    • @heyrosiebee

      thiss. after being so isolated, feeling trapped, afraid that all the meds & surgeries will eventually cause her death.. she might've believed there was no other option at the time. especially after seeing how easily her mother could manipulate family, neighbors, doctors-even the police-with her medical knowledge + a bunch of falsified documents.
      but at the end of the day, she was still involved in her mother's death. that'll weigh heavily on anyone, no matter how despicable their loved one may have been. some people may be coming from a place of hope, from wishing that their own abusers would meet the same fate somehow bc freedom & justice can be pretty hard to get.. but glorifying actions Gypsy Rose herself, an actual real life person, regrets, calling it 'mothering' & stuff is a bit disturbing.

  • @queennsydney

    I really appreciate this balanced look at the situation, especially with the coverage of her ex. There’s so much out there already as a counter narrative about him that because he is autistic he is an innocent that she used as a tool. People love stripping the agency from others and holding up media figures as innocent or guilty when most people are a complex mix of personality and experiences. People love to create a victim or a villain as if the lives of these figures are not real.

    I appreciate an actual interesting take on the topic. I also think it's weird that so much of the true crime stuff exists about the case yet I think it's weird no one talks about some of the elements of the case that could help create a change for vulnerable children and adults like Gypsy. For example:
    I've read some interesting things in the psychology sphere about munchausen by proxy, it seems to be the only condition that is solely a label for a very specific type of abuse that person does which seems weird and damaging.
    In the UK we had a new precedent set for victims of coersive control where a woman's sentence was changed from murder to manslaughter. It was originally murder because she planned his murder. Its not widely known by our law enforcement yet but coersive control is a type of abuse and hopefully going forward it will mean people like Gypsy get better sentencing.

    • @tvcity56
      @tvcity56 8 місяців тому +5

      In at least one children’s hospital they don’t call it that anymore! They call it medical child abuse (in a situation with minors) which is much more descriptive and correct. They are abusers, and they are using both medicine and medical systems to perpetrate it. For adults I think it would simply be medical abuse.

It is kind of similar to when you are depressed and can only see death as a solution because you are so deep in depression that everything you think and your perception are distorted. With that upbringing - her whole life was a lie - that sort of distortion is bound to happen. I am happy to see though that she could grow from that mess and got some education as well! when critiquing The Yassification of Matricide™, please allow for the possibility that behind the dark humour of “slay queen” cheers, a lot of the people rooting for Gypsy are themselves victims and/or survivors of ab*se at the hands of their parents/caregivers. there is a vicarious thrill that some “stans” might be experiencing in Gypsy’s personal triumph, as it offers a glimmer of hope, a dream of freedom and justice, for those who feel powerless. for all her flaws, Gypsy is a legitimate hero to many, and they want to embrace her (without condoning or excusing her actions, obviously).

    The whole situation is disturbing. Yes she came from an abusive situation, but she DID plan a murder and manipulated someone with a very low IQ to do her bidding. Now people are standing her and calling her queen? It’s horrible. She needs to just live her life in private.

    The sheer scale of interest social media has been showing in her has not been sitting well with me. I'm a true crime nut, so it's not like I don't get that aspect of it. But this is surreal to watch in a way. What does this say about us as a society.

      This is where an over-interest in “true crime” leads. The “true crime” genre has created this culture of toxic boundary-crossing and entitlement to a say in others’ personal lives. It’s sick.

      @@creatrixZBD I really hope she's getting therapy. About her privacy... That's where it gets slightly dicey. She's going to be followed by the media constantly from now on, she has no choice in the matter. Sigh.

      As someone who likes true crime, I sometimes hate the community. They remind me of sharks out for blood. They don’t seem to care about victims (not for this case mind you) or the feelings of others in the situation, it’s more the high of accusations and pointing fingers. When I watch or hear about some cases, I need breaks in between due to how much they affect me. I don’t talk to anyone about them either, I stew on it myself. I silently listen and watch and hear their stories. If only more people showed compassion as opposed to a sheer curiosity of morbid fascination. Mind you morbid fascination is normal but when people try to conspire, bud into victim’s lives, or put murderers on pedestals, it’s creepy.

    You can’t vote while you’re in prison, but each state varies by when you regain your voting right back after you are released. Some states are longer than other. But it is damaging to say felons can’t vote . More accurately it’s inaccessible/prohibited for a time.

    • @MikasRhetoric
      @MikasRhetoric  8 місяців тому +1

      There are a couple of states where you still never gain it back, hence why it varies. And several other states still limit it depending on the crime, where something like murder and/or accessory would seemingly limit that ability. Sorry for my misunderstanding

    I’m not a fan of hers she manipulated a slow boy to 86 her mother instead of just getting up out of her wheelchair in front of people and saying something. He’s doing life in prison and she’s out to make a lot of money for herself and I’m sure not help slow boy in anyway. And she was a victim of this woman but there were plenty of other things she could have done besides what she planned and did .

    She still participated in a horrible act and crime. She had choices. She chose the most despicable action to give her freedom. Gypsy should still be in prison in my opinion and im disturbed at everyone cheering on Gypsy being in spotlight and her release. She chose to plan un-aliving her mom over any other choice. Very scary state of the world. The last humans we need as influencers are un-alivers and manipulators.
