I have a Craftsman DGS 6500 Garden Tractor which is a bigger version. Though the parts are different, they work on the same principal. On mine, the bolt had loosened up just as he described. All I had to do was move the shift lever so that it was in the correct position and tighten the bolt. Voila! Reverse was again available! Thanks for the video!

I have a late 90s early 2000s craftsman rider, similar to the lt1000, and it needs some sort of adjustment on the shifter. Reverse and forward both work but neutral isn't where it's supposed to be. To shift into "neutral" you'll have to have the shifter lever in the "forward" position

Appreciate the video. I know you made it quite some time ago. But I have an old craftsman LT 4000 and the shifter is below the steering wheel, in the center. It goes into all of the gears, including reverse, but it is just super difficult to get it to go from one to the next. Could it be something as simple as something is bent? I saw another video suggesting that might be the issue. Going to get into it tomorrow.

A friend of mine has a McCulloch M115-77RB Lawn tractor that keeps breaking the gear shift rod, it’s been replaced twice now but continues to fail, always at the transmission end, any ideas to why it’s failing?
When I replaced it the last time I used it for a 5 minutes and it works fine, when they use it for any length of time, 10 minutes or so (what they tell me) it fails. They say that they are shifting as you’re meant to so it’s not user error, they’ve had it for 7 years and drive it now the way they always have and it’s only started to fail recently.

I'm not familiar with this model. Here are a few things to try. If it's not a hydrostatic drive and your shifting on the fly, press the clutch/break pedal half way down then shift. or stop press the pedal all the way in then shift. The rod may have a poor design. It may need a little reinforcement at the end.

I paid big money for the complete Craftsman 46 inch deck, snowblower, blade at an auction like new but I cannot figure out how to put the deck on since the snow blower was taken off. Seems to be a rod or something missing and I can't find a video or diagram of it exactly as it was a limited edition only made 2 years as we found today somewhere online. Appreciate the videos. My mower (old poulan pro) will just slip out of gear randomly it seems. I thought at first maybe something was wrong with the brake as you can get it going again with a push as it's running. Seems to do this randomly. Hi John.
I would check the shift lever and see if it could be bent. My old Poulan mower has a shift lever in front of the seat. I have pulled back on the lever so hard that it has bent. When I would push it forward the lever would hit the bottom of the notch. It would go in gear but I could see where it could pop out very easily. If that isn’t it then it is more than likely in the transmission. I work on a really old MTD that had a worn axel bushing. The axle had worn into the lower transmission case to the point that it wouldn’t stay in gear.

      Hi Bill
It could be a bent blades. This may sound odd but check the tire pressure and tire size. I don’t have a Bolen on hand to get the tire size for you. This is the biggest problem with an out of adjusted decks. Then check to see if the deck goes up and down should move around 2 inches or so. If not something is wrong with the linkage. Next check the level adjustments. Front to back is adjusted with the rod or rods under the engine. With the blades pointing forward and back the front tip should be 1/8 to 3/8 lower then the back. The side to side is adjusted with the lift arms. With blades pointing side to side the outer tips should match. Check these adjustments several time. I hope this helped. Thanks for watching..

Hi Kevin I’ve never had to adjust the high low lever on a gt5000. This is what I would check. First I would see if the lever was bent. Then I would look for any kind of adjustment around the base of the lever. That would be the easy fix. After that it would be inside the transmission possibly a sheared roll pin or a bent shift fork.

My LT1000 today just doesn’t go forward or reverse. Nothing. It worked a week ago.

I would check the drive belt first. It is right under the engine and just above the deck drive belt.
      Thanks for watching.

      Dale Hobbs Yes sir.
That was it. The drive belt was so worn and had 3 partial splits that it fell off the Idler pulley.
Replaced the Drive belt and while I was at it, replaced the mower deck belt
The operation is now like new. Fantastic.

I don’t get many Poulan Pro mowers in for work. I have worked on a few decks. I think they should have something similar to these Craftsman mowers. I believe they are both made by MTD.
