Hello ia have a 1982 craftsman gtv16 . it was shifting. Fine and mowing . i put in nuteral and then first and it barely moves then stops its like . it wont shift in any gear
Appreciate the video. I know you made it quite some time ago. But I have an old craftsman LT 4000 and the shifter is below the steering wheel, in the center. It goes into all of the gears, including reverse, but it is just super difficult to get it to go from one to the next. Could it be something as simple as something is bent? I saw another video suggesting that might be the issue. Going to get into it tomorrow.
So mine shifts in all gears fine but on my bezel gear indicator piece my first gear is Neutral. I tried adjusting it but I can get my shifter in the reverse area of that bezel.
A friend of mine has a McCulloch M115-77RB Lawn tractor that keeps breaking the gear shift rod, it’s been replaced twice now but continues to fail, always at the transmission end, any ideas to why it’s failing? When I replaced it the last time I used it for a 5 minutes and it works fine, when they use it for any length of time, 10 minutes or so (what they tell me) it fails. They say that they are shifting as you’re meant to so it’s not user error, they’ve had it for 7 years and drive it now the way they always have and it’s only started to fail recently.
I'm not familiar with this model. Here are a few things to try. If it's not a hydrostatic drive and your shifting on the fly, press the clutch/break pedal half way down then shift. or stop press the pedal all the way in then shift. The rod may have a poor design. It may need a little reinforcement at the end.
Thanks for the videos. I have a Poulan Pro that won't go into gear. There is a rod dangling under the right side, opposite side of the shifter. Looks like it came loose but I don't know where it goes. Do you know how I can fix this? Can you do a video on that? Thanks again,

I paid big money for the complete Craftsman 46 inch deck, snowblower, blade at an auction like new but I cannot figure out how to put the deck on since the snow blower was taken off. Seems to be a rod or something missing and I can't find a video or diagram of it exactly as it was a limited edition only made 2 years as we found today somewhere online. I need to watch it all hooked up from each rod, clip, and connection. It shifts by cable to the hand shifter on the steering wheel like a car use to.
Thank you. I did what you said, adjusted the lever so it would freely go in reverse. I was so excited, put the wheel back on, started the mower and it won't go in reverse or forward. The shift lever moves rather sloppy. I tightened the 2 bolts at the beginning of this video and still nothing. Any suggestions?
TWA Museum RichardsRoad Hi When I adjust the shift lever I find neutral on the transmission. I do this be putting the transmission in a forward gear and then down shifting until the mower doesn’t move. Then I go under the fender and adjust the lever to the neutral position. I had one a few years ago that did the same thing. The problem was the axle bushing had worn so bad that the gears in the transmission would not stay meshed. Thanks for watching.

John W Hi John. I would check the shift lever and see if it could be bent. My old Poulan mower has a shift lever in front of the seat. I have pulled back on the lever so hard that it has bent. When I would push it forward the lever would hit the bottom of the notch. It would go in gear but I could see where it could pop out very easily. If that isn’t it then it is more than likely in the transmission. I work on a really old MTD that had a worn axel bushing. The axle had worn into the lower transmission case to the point that it wouldn’t stay in gear.

This is the biggest problem with an out of adjusted decks. Then check to see if the deck goes up and down should move around 2 inches or so. If not something is wrong with the linkage. Next check the level adjustments. Front to back is adjusted with the rod or rods under the engine. With the blades pointing forward and back the front tip should be 1/8 to 3/8 lower then the back. I don’t get many Poulan Pro mowers in for work. I have worked on a few decks. I think they should have something similar to these Craftsman mowers. I believe they are both made by MTD.
@@DaleHobbs39 I downloaded the owners manual. It was detailed enough that I figured it out. Thank you.
