Flea at 8 is bad, but Les at 7 is unforgivable.
Agreed.
He should have been top 3 for sure
Les is number 1. Flea is number 2. P-Nut from 311 is number 3.
Totally agree
It’s a crime against humanity is what it is
Do you agree with our list?
No.
Two words. Cliff Burton!
John Deacon for me
Hot Space john deacon is no where near a great bassist, hes a great songwriter but thats it
@@jaimelannister1797 John Deacon is an amazing bassist
Hot Space dont get me wrong, hes good, i just dont think he should be top 10 over some other bassists
Very happy to see Geddy Lee get the credit. I am from the same area he is from and have run across him and his family numerous times and he has always been my favorite bassist. I'm glad to see it wasn't just my bias. And on top of that the guys in the band are/were really good solid guys that treated their fans with nothing but respect.
Geddy Lee and Rush were Rock’s Class Act!!! Anyone who played an instrument, guitar bass or drums, can appreciate that Mr. Lee number one bassist of all time, Mr. Peart number one drummer/percussionist of all time. Alex Lifeson, top five guitarist of all time🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸. Rush #1 Power Trio Of All Time!!! And my favorite since their heyday in the late 70s. Rush The Greatest Band In The Galaxy🎸🎸🎸
Lee isn’t just the greatest bassist, but one of the greatest musicians of all time. The fact that he sings, plays bass, AND plays keyboard all in the same songs is a testament to his skill.
@@YedMan01 Hell yes
@@Tavat Thank You, I am a retired bass
player, my 2 close friends , one a guitarist with over 45 years experience, and one a drummer with over 40 years of experience!!! We all three agree Geddy Lee #1 All Time whoever is # 2 is very far behind. Same with Neil Peart, except he is a drummer/ percussionist and whoever is number 2 is actually a million miles behind Neil Peart!!! Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen, yes one , two , three🎸 Number 4 Alex Lifeson!!! Incidentally, for number five all time, I have Tony Iomi, the inventor of heavy-metal and guitarist for Black Sabbath🎸🎸🎸 The rock group that invented heavy-metal. Number six David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, who in our opinion founded and originated what we like to call Head Music , a sub genre of progressive rock🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
@@joesonestopproshop8533 I agree Joe, and also plays complicated bass lines, while singing Neil Peart‘s impossible dictionary lyrics!!! The only other Progressive Rock Musician to compare him with is a multi-talented man by the name of Ian Anderson, founder and leader of another Progressive Rock Giant Called Jethro Tull. My friend who plays guitar, also plays flute and in our band ( retired now) we covered a few Jethro Tull songs like Aqua Lung, and Locomotive Breath!! Anderson, can play six or eight instruments, writes most of the lyrics & musical compositions for the songs!!!. So, my guitar playing buddy who also plays flute, believes Ian Anderson to be the number one progressive rock musician of all time. I have a tendency to agree with him, And that would make Geddy Lee number two, in our opinion but no lower!!!
We're focusing less on technical masters:

*Kirby has found your sin unforgivable*
yes.
He probably is the best
Funny my name is Kirby, and Metallica became my most favorite band in 1985! That’s funny.
I would argue if we are talking about people who revolutionized bass playing Burton would be number one. You go watch the opening of for whom the bells tolls live and you kinda get scared watching that unfold😧

You dckhead
A big part of why Rush sounds so good live is the same crew supported them for decades
Paul McCartney at #3? Give him a year just to learn one Cliff Burton album and I bet you my house he won't be able to play it.
It's not just about the skill.
Ow believe me he can play that for sure! But it is just not his style so he doesn't make that kind of music.
Cliff was a shredder, Paul played about 14 Instruments, was extremely innovative and a great Singer aswell.
Paul McCartney was born to entertain us!
If you're talking about the best bass players of all time, it surely is about your skill on a bass guitar. Paul was a great songwriter and musician, but we has a jack of all trades.

My top 10 10. jpj 9. Paul McCartney 8. Roger Waters 7. John deacon 6. Steve harris 5. John Entwstle 4. Geddy Lee 3. Cliff Burton 2. Les claypool 1. Flea
John Deacon wasn't just a bassist, he was also born on August 19th, 1951.
Top 10 Bassists vid and no mention of Tool’s Justin Chancellor.
You guys have no business talking about rock
I agree with you there. Justin chancellor is awesome. Not just coz he is British (like myself) but his playing style is so cool
Except from rolling stone
“Under the Bridge” also flouts the long-standing school of thought on the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Loved and scorned in equal measure as tattooed punk-funk loons obsessed with the horizontal rumba, the Chili Peppers are skateboard-culture heroes, recognized even by their detractors as early pioneers of the mosh-pit marriage of funk, rap and thrash that Living Colour and Faith No More took to the bank. The band members are notorious as well for the horny deviltry of songs like “Party on Your Pussy” and their socks-on-cocks stage gag - coming on buck naked except for a strategically placed white tube sock. They’ve also made headlines because of legal problems in Virginia, where Kiedis was convicted of indecent exposure and sexual battery after exposing himself to a woman following a 1989 show, and in Daytona Beach, Florida, where Flea and Chad Smith were arrested following an incident with a young woman during the filming of an MTV Spring Break performance in 1990.

I agree completely
Also no Ryan Martinie.
For real they couldnt even get immigrant song right
Mike Dirnt should've been in this list, he's just incredible.
He is
Habibi Hassan Yes, he is :D
He is definitely a good bass player, absolutely. But I don't think he's THAT good enough to be ranked alongside Cliff and JPJ and others
Habibi Hassan Yeah, Gene Simmons too. lol
Habibi Hassan I'm a huge Green Day fan and I like Mike a lot. There's no denying he's very good at what he does. I'd say within the style of music he plays he's easily one of the best. However when talking about the best bassists of all time, he's just not in the same league as the real greats, like Geddy Lee, Flea, Cliff, Steve Harris and John Paul Jones.
My Top 10 list
10. John Myung

8. Larry Graham/Geddy Lee
7. John Entwistle

Lemme Kilmister needs to be on this list. He pretty much invented thrash.

chris schiefen I forgot about him! I guess you could change Ellefson, but Steve Harris and Cliff Burton still blow him away
Newstead? Yes they could, god bless 'em ;o)
not sure about the whole list but I agree with #1. geddy is an innovative and prolific multi-instrumentalist and bass guitar virtuoso. no doubt that he is currently the best bass guitarist he's ever been after 40+ years of recording and performing and 30 albums. honestly, who can compare to his resume?
All true, but I would not put him above his main influence Chris Squire, and he didn't even make the list.
But he can’t even slap but still think he’s amazing
Entwistle should be #1. The man built his first electric bass, and played it different from everyone else at the time. There wouldn’t be all the great bass guitarists without John.
No disrespect to Geddy Lee, he’s incredible.
1) John Entwistle
2) Paul McCartney
3) Flea
4) Geddy Lee
Flea at 8
Cliff Burton at 6
Roger Waters and Lemmy are not even on the list
Yeah nice one mojo
Saint Emeritus i mean, Waters is a great composer and singer, he is good at playing bass, but not exceptional. Lemmy is one of the greatest legends in rock history, but was he really a good bass player?
Lemmy was metal legend not rock
@@VintageSlide Waters not being exceptional is debatable for I think he is better at playing bass than some of the bassists that are in the video. As for Lemmy, he is definitly one if not the best bass guitarist in the world and he really should have been on the list at least top 3
Saint Emeritus how the fuck is Lemmy one of the best? He plays fast, unaccurate, super easy basslines? I love the dude, one of the most badass people that ever walked on earth, killer songs, killer vocals, killer bass tone, killer everything, but still, can’t agree. He ain’t that good at playing.

As much as I continue to adore the Beatles as a band, there is no way McCartney is a better bassist than the likes of Claypool and JPJ. Actually I feel it’s unfair to entitle JPJ to a single instrument. Such a masterful multi instrumentalist he is.
He should’ve been 10 or 9
Totaly Agree! JPJ was a master Composer! And an Awesome Bassist! One of the best Ever! But as far as just Bass goes Les C is on a total different level than anyone I've ever saw. And I love Zeppelin a million times more that Primus. But it is what it is.
Seems like lots of the picks involved other aspects like songwriting which is why I assume they put McCartney there, although I agree definitely not better as a bassist than other on the list
McCartney merece estar en la lista, mucho mejor en muchos sentidos a JPJ, aparte que nadie toma en cuenta que es considerado uno de los mejores Bajistas por su inovasion, puesto te darás cuenta que es el bajista más antiguo de toda la lista.
Paul deserves his spot because he changed the way the bass was thought of and used in a band. That along with influencing many that came after him
Having this discussion at work today! Great list btw
Have fun!
Hey mojo what are the greatest bassists of all time?
Mojo: first of all what is a bass?
I'm glad they put Geddy Lee as number one. Rush is one of the most underrated bands out there.
Well, Geddy and Neil get their due credit. Unfortunately, Alex still has yet to get the guitar credit he rightfully deserves.
The Cisco Kid Yeah. Alex Lifeson is amazing but a lot of people just think he's another guitarist.
***** Musicians know who Alex Lifeson is, and a lot of them cite him as an influence. But assholes who write on stuff like Rolling Stone magazine barely list him. Christ, on the top 100 guitarist list, he is ranked 98. Below people like fucking Kurt Cobain. KURT COBAIN. What a disgrace.
The Cisco Kid Really? They ranked Kurt Cobain higher than Alex Lifeson?
Tom Cass Yeah probably. I feel bad for Cobain since he had such a crappy life.
Geddy Lee.. A worthy #1
+Shaun Barry Agreed, many talented Bass players but Geddy is in a class of his own :)
I like this list. Almost every bassist had an influence on me as a bass player. My opinion though is that #4, 3 and 2 are popularity contest winners. Amazing bands and excellent musicians. However when it comes to pure bass playing, many in the bottom of this list supercede them. Also Geezer should absolutely make the list. I could go on for days as to why. Personally Paul, John, and John were crucial parts of their bands but if we're talking strictly bass playing, Les, Steve, Flea, Cliff and certainly Geezer should be ahead of them I'm my opinion.
DEFINITELY FACTS
Im not a Claypool fan... But even i know he deserves to be number 1
I believe Les Claypool and Flea should have been higher on the list.
double like
Yes, I agree. Les Claypool should be in the top 3 and Cliff should top 1.
My Top Three (In no particular order):
1. Les Claypool - Primus
Technical Master
2. Geddy Lee - Rush
Most influential
3. Flea - RHCP
Personal Favourite
Thraidox completely agree
Geddy Lee is better than Claypool And Anything bassist
But Geddy Lee was heavily influenced by John Entwistle.
Literally any Frank Zappa bassist would make this list
my top 4 in order for my own reason are John Paul Jones, Geddy Lee, Sir Paul McCartney and Chris Squire of Yes
Lemmy see where Lemmy is! Nowhere? Sod off, Mojo!
László Horváth Lemmy used a pick he doesn’t deserve to be on this list
@@nickmaric8481 Lemmy's uniqueness is actually a good reason to have him on the list.
László Horváth I know! WTF!!!
its a shit list.
Guitarists with a bass guitar... Good at what he did... But a bass player... Arguable...
Hi, I´m John Richard Deacon. I´m a bassist for Queen, and I was born on August 19, 1951. My favorite drink is tea............legendary interview
I'm here only for John Richard Deacon 🤠
I think the fact Paul can play the bass and sing at the same time in I saw her standing there puts him at a valid spot on the list
10. You

2. Skill
1. Geddy Lee
Captain Deadeye Greatest ever! Geddy Lee
You mean Cliff Burton, right?
DarkMelody no I think he meant Geddy Lee is the best bassist of all time
Lee #1 no doubt about it
@@darkmelody4725 Geddy Lee is a way better bassist than Cliff Burton
Geddy Lee definetly deserves the first place. Just listen closely to YYZ
By this of course im not saying that some of the bassists shoudn't be in top 5
YEP!
Several of the ones being above Les Claypool and Flea, jesus what sort of crack were they smoking.
They also totally discounted vic wooten and didn't even bother mentioning Carol Kaye even though that lady is seriously responsible for a ton of the entire style of bass guitar a lot of these guys play but since she was a studio musician and not a stage performer they don't even mention her.
They were at least smart enough to not put up one of the bass players who she did the studio work for and put them in the list I guess, so that's something.
actually, they specifically showed Vic Wooten under "session" players, at the beginning, whom they were not making the list about. Mind you, don't fully agree with their list, either the inclusions or placement, but it is what it is (most of this is subjective at this point)..... though honestly found putting Tom Araya on honorable mentions a bit laughable.... don't really know anyone who listens to Slayer for their basslines.
Not a single mention of Lemmy Kilmister, or Justin Chancellor…😭😭
I feel like people who say McCartney doesn't deserve to be on this list should listen to some of his isolated bass work on Abbey Road. Absolutely amazing.
No one's saying that he's not good, simply that in terms of playing ability he's nowhere near the others on this list.
@@ddandymann maybe... but the "others on this list" might not even be on this list if The Beatles hadn't existed... McCartney pretty much created and forged melodic bass lines, and many, including his detractors, have a lot to thank him for.
Like all generation's, we are only interested in those who influenced that generation.
Bands from the Big Band era like Mel Torme, Glen Miller, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis,
Louis Armstrong, Buddy Rich and Gene Kruper,
Ray Charles, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Jimmy Witherspoon, Dinah Washington, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Bobby Hackett, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Teddy Wilson, and through to today, the likes of Michael Buble, Paul Anka and his Orchestra, David Campbell, Tony Bennett and his trio, there was Dave Brubeck, BB King and his Orchestra, Dudley Moore, Herbie Mann, James Moody and Dizzy Gillespie, Willie Dixon, Jamie Calum, Even the likes of Herb Albert and his Orchestra, Dr John, Burt Bacarach and his Band.
Just too many to name here, these guys are some of the best there ever was, and when these bass players that are listed here as being some of the best around, they won't be remembered as long as these greats that I have mentioned here.
These bands had some very good musicians playing with them over the years and times of their generation, their music still lives on today from many younger up and coming players who admire these players and their music.
There are a few here that I rate as very good musician's, and bass player's, such as John Deakin,
'Led Zeppelin's' bassist, 'Deep Purple's' bassist Roger Glover, also Glen Hughes, The bass player from Rober Fripp's band 'King Crimson', he went on to join up with 'Bad Company'. Definatey 'Yes's' original bassist, definately had a great style that heavily influenced the 'Yes' sound, it may have been the treble Richenbacker bass he used to help get that sound, but he definately had the slap style sound going on.
Bill Black from Elvis Presley's first band, he definately created a lot of feel to the songs Elvis was recording back in the 50s.
The bass player Elvis used in his 'Vegas Days', as good as he was at holding the rhythm section together, with his busy style, I felt he was too busy with everything he played, everything was way too fast and in a hurry! for me personally, he was too over the top! but Elvis seemed to like what he contributed.
I find that players, including guitarist's, keyboard player's, and drummer's, that are too busy, they all over play and are too self indulgent, which their lacks in the feel of what they are playing.
They are way more interested in showing off, trying to impress would be musician's with their tricks and unsavoury noise.
These type of players don't interest me in the least, they're too messy, which lacks musical merit.
Paul McCartney is about the only bass player in modern music, that plays creative feel with his playing, which helps create the songs he writes, or helps write and play on.
Look at songs like Cilla Blacks "Step Inside Love" which he wrote for her, he accually plays guitar on this track.
The other is "It's For You", also written for
Cilla Black by Lennon /McCartney.
Paul is a very melodic musician, there is always melody and feel when he plays bass, not some messy 'nightmare' of mish mash notes that make no sense when listening to it.
I've listened to the band 'Mr Big' where they all get carried away with themselves, showing off how good they are, at being able to cross arms across each other during a performance, and play each other's instruments, great for (the would be's, if they could be!) novice musicians who are all impressed with a trick, by these so called top musician's.
I have quite a few 'Rush' albums in my collection, but it all sounds the same after a while, some of their arrangement's are OK, but nothing brilliant, just Okay.
Same with bands like 'Yes', 'Deep Purple', Uriah Heep', 'Metallica', 'Bon Jovi', 'Kiss', even 'Queen', 'Bad Company', 'Beck, Bogart and Appice', 'Van Halen', 'Led Zeppelin', 'Frank Zappa', 'Ungly Kid Joe',
'LIVE', 'Offspring', 'Bush', 'Sound Garden', 'Pearl Jam',
'Lincoln Park', 'Foo Fighters', 'Klaatu', 'Reef Glow',
'Three Doors Down', 'Goo Goo Dolls', 'The Killers',
'Maroon 5', 'Squeeze', 'Matchbox 20', 'Green Day',
'Motor Head', Guns and Roses', 'ACDC', 'Steppenwolf', 'Rainbow', 'Pink', 'Merridith Brooks',
'The Cranberries', and the list's go on, only a few selected tracks are worth listening to, the rest is boring, going nowhere material, and bands and artist don't seem to realise that their original material all sounds the same, and similar to the last track, so they're all boring to listen to.
If I had to listen to these (show off bass players) I'd last a few bars in, and listen to a few bars of the next track, and so forth until I've had a little taste, take the album off, put it away and in some cases, never listen to it again, because it all sounds the same.
Only certain tracks maybe OK, so I'm a finicky listener when it comes to all music.
As I said, (show off players don't impress me) I'm a bassist myself, it takes a lot to impress me.
I do have a lot of respect for the older style music,
and I appreciate the musicianship that went into that music, yes, some is a load of rubbish, I agree.
@@nevillede-hoedt6520 Really appreciate the long and well-thought out comment!
Number 1: Chris Squire
For years I couldn't have cared if ANY rock band even had a bass guitar, then I saw a bass solo Chris Squire did on one of my Yes DVD's and I've changed my mind on that. He easily should've made this list in the #1 or #2 slot way above most of these guys on the list. The folks making the list are probably too young to even know who "Yes" is !!!
James Walls Yeah, I agree. I'm 26 but I've been listening to these guys since I was a wee shit. Honestly, it seems like these lists are just rehashed MTV and VH1 "Top *insert thingie here* lists".
This might as well have been a VH1 special on bassists that aired 10 years ago. All the obvious ones, but missing some of the EXTREMELY obvious ones!
James Walls Well I know who "Yes" is, and they are f**kin 'A'! That band kicks ass hard. "Owner of a Lonely Heart"...say what!
Agreed...without Squire no Getty Lee. You hear Chris Squire in just about everything Getty Lee has done!
total agreed !!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of Geddy Lee's main influences was Chris Squire.
Not having Squire on this list is incomprehensible.
They are complete idiots.....Chris was the greatest bass player to ever walk the earth.
Exactly. Squire is my favourite.
Agreed squire should have been over flea no doubt
I know he's not the best, but greg lake was really good too.
Making a list like this is ridiculous. I mean these are all great bass players don't get me wrong. But it's like The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Whoever the person is making the list will certainly pick there favorite flavor.
Hey I made the list! How awesome, I feel appreciated again!
Then why were flea and claypool and burton not the top 3 🤣
7 years later : Davie504- wussup slappers
I’m just glad they included John Deacon he’s so underrated
Same here... I felt John Deacon is highly underrated because he always keep himself low profile.
He is underrated because he is in the shadow of Freddie mercury and Brian May.The same happens with roger taylor. When you have the best vocalist and guitarrist of history ita hard to show up
@@axelpotato8561 Brian may is definitely not the best guitarist ever
@@liamjohnston5099 Total guitar dont have that opinion
Thx for spoiling im here bc of him :D
Immigration Song is not Kashmir, guys.
Um, pretty sure it says Kashmir. Watchmojo wouldn't get it wrong dude.
Well they got anestesia and whiplash mixed up, so maybe...
Coolpants MacCool I know it says Kashmir. But the song that was playing was Immigration Song. Try to keep up.
Immigration song! Hahahahahaha!
Mad Monty MN The sarcasm was lost on you wasn't. Also it's called Immigrant Song, okay buddy. It's alright, you get a point for trying anyways.
