Leonard Parkin legendary newsreader of time. In some way he can be part of our childhood the way he would always welcome the younger viewers as well as adults true professional on News at One
The picture quality's very impressive. This is how ITV news should be done, instead of focussing on D-list celebrities and banging on and on about the royals.
I remember the ITV strike. The screen just had a message on it for weeks saying about industrial action. I was 9. Then, when ITV returned, there were little promos with voices singing "welcome back to ITV!". Unfortunately Crossroads hadn't improved.
good to see this again. this was just after the 1979 ITV strike. ITV news today is just horrible. too tabloid and to americanised. just like television overall today, it treats its audience as though it has a learning difficulty. cheers.
Well Funny Love nastalgia ! ,I remember this News reader and the theme music , not seen this for nearly 30 Yrs years. And seeing this again triggers other things in my memory from this time, when i was a kid it shows that a whole generation has been influenced by TV , you cannot escape it !
This was one of my favourite ever news broadcasts. I mean, £45 to Athens (last minute stand by) - I think we all remember where we were when we first heard about that.
From what I read somewhere that Thames TV did the 1st link from London for the whole ITV Network after the strike, The Thames Clock was altered to show ITV at the top. The announcer is Peter Marshall.
Yes of course - this was the first program after that blasted ITV strike. RIP Leonard Parkin. The news at 5:45 basically signalled the end of children's programme's - including John Craven's Newsround on BBC1 - and the start of "serious news."
Here is ITV's national emergency schedule for their first Saturday back after the strike on Saturday 27th October 1979. 9.30am: Local Programmes. 10.30am: Tiswas. 12:30pm: World of Sport. 5.05pm: News. 5.15pm: Disney Cartoons. 5.30pm: Mind Your Language. 6.00pm: Film, Gold, starring Roger Moore. 8.15: Freddie Starr's Variety Madhouse. 9pm: The Professionals. 10pm: News. 10.15: Film, The Last Detail. 12.15 Closedown.
Fantastic picture! I remember coming home in the evening, switching on the TV, and seeing a slide which said something like "Due to industrial action by technicians, blah blah no telly on ITV tonight mate." And it went on for months too!! Hard to believe it happening now...Well, it wouldn't. THANK GOD FOR YOU TUBE It enables us to see full length clips like this, without post-moronic dribbling comments from the likes of Colin McConie.
oh those were the days indeed! how i longed for a my parents to buy a vcr back then! but alas it was to be many more years later b4 one was purchased but i have fond memories of watching the news at 5.45 back in the 70s.
After watching the 2nd part it looks likes Thames TV must have done the announcement for the rest of the week, i wonder if LWT were used over the weekend?.
I know what you mean. They get C list celebs to watch the clip first, then pretend that they can 'remember' obscure details about the clip, which makes it look like they have 20 year memories.
@michtyme3 I heard the awful news re Death of Elvis...on Tuesday 16 Aug 1977.The News at Ten was just about over when news reader Reginald Bosanquet read the "NewsFlash" " Unconfirmed reports are coming in from Memphis Tennessee that Elvis Presley has died".
Made me laugh, when I saw a 20 something year old singer talking about something from the early '80s. I thought to meself: "Hang on! You weren't even born in 1982 as yet. So obviously faked. (It may have been Rachel Stevens) Ugh!!
21 quid one way to Paris, in today's money Is nearly £100!! Much cheaper to go by Eurostar at 60 quid return...Oh, the tunnel hadn't been built as yet. :-)
Sir freddie was 25 years ahead of his time trying to introduce cheap flights, only to be forced into bankruptsie by the likes of Britishairways and other majour airlines who wanted us all to pay through the nose for air travel...
This meant "Ludvig The Egg" or Rhubabrb & Custard had just finished!!!, & your parents saying "Shut Up" I'm trying to listen to the news", History repeating itself, "But your not watching Spongebob I want to watch the news!!!"

It was like going back in time - clarity is superb - keep posting - you are a saint!
Brilliant!! "Let's get on with it!" love it! Bet that wouldn't happen today . . .
Ol' Lenny was probably the first newsreader I was aware of.
"Right, let's get on with it!"

That's how I always thought of it...Wished we'd had more childrens TV.
The ITN News at 5.45 after the strike was originally broadcast on Wednesday 24th October 1979 after 75 days

Is it me, or did Kenneth Kendal do a little sneer at the end of that BBC report on ITN before carrying on with the next item?

leonard parkin is my grandpa!!!!!!
Top bloke. One of the best news readers along side John Suchet
He was my uncle Still miss him.
I know what you mean. They get C list celebs to watch the clip first, then pretend that they can 'remember' obscure details about the clip, which makes it look like they have 20 year memories.
Indeed. He was a proto-Thatcherite who came along just too early. Peter Cadbury of Westward Television was very similar.
Who is saying "The news at 5:45 with Leonard Parkin" ?
Look at 4:10. Not a single PC in sight!!! Wonder how modern studios and offices would cope without them!!!
I mean Freddie Laker of course, not Ian Smith!
That was 22 years before the King of Pop's death was a news flash.
And now with Ryanair, the fares would be £9.99 . . . until you see the taxes, baggage charges, the cost of using the loo . . .

Is Sir Freddie Laker related to Josh Widdecombe?
I'm willing to think the ITV personalities were relieved to return to their jobs after 8 weeks in limbo.
Have you got any leonard parkin news bullatins Max ?
Yeah, him an' all! thanks.
They did have a special offer for £5 were you would ride on the wing, but this did not take off

Chairman Hua lives in our memories
0:00 - 0:07: ITV Clock(looks like Thames TV clock)
You can still see the S in Thames if you look closely.
How did THAT happen?
@Tripp1993 32 years. Both legends. Both died too young. EP at age 42 and MJ at age 50. Their music and legacy live on.
Thats one HELL of a hair do there on the late great Leonard Parkin
You Mean Stuart MacConie and Andrew Collins?
Wow, you're related to Leonard Parkin?
The titles need some kind of techno remix.
Someone should tell Javier Bardém to retrace his lineage :)
Lol, comb-over overload
children's programme's
childrens' programmes
@usenetposts I consider the option of plane travel to be inhumane...tis why I like taking the train! =)

Leonard Parkin died after a brave battle with Spine Cancer
