Ziggy, Thank you for your interesting contributions to this forum. I especially like your creative modifications. You have imagination and ability to show your creations, in a fun way. We benefit from you. Richard Ceballos
I know this is an old video Ziggy but just found your channel. One suggestion that I found works for me. I had a broken aluminum framing square so I drilled another hole in the tongue end( the 16 inch piece) mounted that to my rudder head so it stuck out a little. Used the same type of paint handle extender though mine gets a lot shorter, think it's three sections. Cut my roller handle to leave part of the roller mount part. I just slip the roller handle through a hole in the square and I can steer from anywhere on the boat, remove it when I'm not using it and also use it as my boat hook. Also, I keep my halyard in a loop, tie the bitter end to the same shackle. I somehow ended up with the halyard being pulled up the mast with no sail attached, not enough weight for it to come back down and had to lower the mast to retrieve it. No more. I also use a jamb cleat for the halyard. Made it just long enough that I hook the shackle over the top of the mast cleat and can stretch the line around the bottom of the cleat for storage when the sails off. When I'm anchored or whatever I often unhook the sail and run a Lucy light up the halyard. Gives nice light, anchor light and attracts the bugs up away from me. Just realized you were from Michigan. One of my favorite spots to sail is out of Sterling State Park, Monroe, sail out to the islands, it's about 30 miles to Bass Island/Put In Bay, state park there with a bay. Always seems the wind doesn't cooperate for the return trip, done that one in the dark a couple times. I have a tent with the same hole/elastic band and a soft kayak cover for the rear. Got a ton of good ideas from your mods, simple and effective. Really appreciate the vids. There is nothing, absolutely nothing half so worth doing as messing about in boats.
All good ideas. I was a liveaboard for 20 yrs in Detroit. Loved sailing Lake Huron. Did the Lake Erie runs many times to.. tha js for the shout. Lots of Michigan sailing on my website. www.ziggyland.com
22:56 I have a GUSTBUSTER umbrella that goes with me when I'm kayaking or on the beach, that thing keeps me shaded in the sun and dry in the rain and the wind just blows right through it.
Hi Ziggy, enjoyed your video , great looking little boat. I have a friend who has a 16 but i think the 17 is the way to go. I will be looking to buy one , but over here in Australia they few and far between. Happy sailing, regards Colin.
Do you have any suggestions regarding info on your electrical system.? I'll go back and watch your vid again but wondered if you had a good resource for smaller systems. Everything I'm finding is for bigger systems. I recognize that charge controller. Do you have a fuse block as well? And thanks for sharing.
I did a video on wiring a while back. Big tips are keep the wires and everything you can up high on small boats. Dryer the better. Feel free to ask me any questions. Here's a link. ua-cam.com/video/21yHvbIGQDc/v-deo.html
I owned a 2002 WR17 before sold it during my divorce and just picked up a 2017 WR17. I am now coming from a 55’ sailboat to a house and this WR17. I wanted to ask what size your display is for GPS. I am looking at the newer a Garmin 7” I think it is a UHD cv model. The small half screen isn’t going to cut it for me out on the Puget Sound. I need to be able to see it well I pretty nasty weather sometimes. I wanted to see what you had onboard so I can get a relative size comparison so I can decide the size. Thanks for everything!
I downsized from 34ft C&C sailboat to the WR17. I bought a Garmin Echomap Plus 63Cv. it has a 6 inch screen and it rocks. Downside is it is a big unit for a small boat. I could've got by with a smaller unit. Being right in front of your face it is bright at night. Upside, it is a big unit.. detail is nice. Most of the guys I sail with use Navionics on their phone but I want a dedicated nav unit. a.co/d/h8eD3vs
I use a Homedepot HDX heavy duty 3 gallon bucket with snap on screw top lids from amazon. Inside I keep Loo bags, I'll put a link at the end. It's a double bagging ziplock bag you open up and line the bucket with then close the bag up when done. about 3 uses per bag then leave it in the bucket bottom and use a fresh bag. a.co/d/1t85txE
@@mikelowmon4666 the Texas 200 kicks off in a few weeks. I like your idea, I may do a piece on how different ppl handle the poop issue all week. thanks!
Hey Ziggy, very nice video, best one I've seen yet. I love the modifications, though I'd do things a little differently. I'm one of those people that wants everything to be measured in grams! Do you know anyone that has a bowsprit modification article or video? Thanks a ton!
Not off the top of my head. There's some YT videos of ppl sailing them but I don't think I've seen one getting into the details of the mechanics. The old windrider forum if it's still accessible would be a good place to start. There is a new forum now started by my buddy Bruce that could give you an answer. windrider.freeforums.net/
@@ZiggyLavengood Great Ziggy, thanks for the link. I have tried to find new content on the old forum, but it seems to be shut down. I think the WR-17 will be an awesome boat for gunkholing in Baja - on the Pacific side in the summer, and throughout the Sea Of Cortez in the winter. Cheers!
@@ZiggyLavengood Hey Ziggy, one other thing (I forgot to mention) looking at the modifications, I was thinking about the additional weight of everything and wondering about other ways to achieve the same outcome. Take a look at this episode of Top Gear, where they show the world's first 3D printed car. The additive manufacturing these guys are doing is insane. I made lazy jacks and a topping lift. They are a bit redundant. Lazy jacks can be bought from windrider for $90 but the smart money is to go to their website and they have instructions and the measurements to make your own for cheap. www.nickelsboatworks.com/products/lazy-jack The jacks attach to the same ring as the shrouds and jib. They rock. I've wanted to sail one for years. Don't think I would buy one just cause it's a special purpose boat. Gotta have deeper water with no obstacles that could tear out the wings. But if you have the right lake it would be a blast. Not many of them left. Parts would be tricky too.
Hi Ziggy, thanks for your advice. You gave me hope in one of your videos when you said you were 6’4”” tall and 300 lbs. I’m 6’2” tall and 266lbs. You said you had raised the seat 3” to make entry into the aft cockpit easier. I tried that but due to the shape of the WR I had to move the seat forward about 6” which meant it was impossible to enter. Did you change the cockpit seat from the original one to a narrower one? What Im asking is we are both big guys but you are a little bigger, what’s the secret of easy entry to the aft cockpit. We are still on lockdown in Scotland. I would like to run up the North Sea coast to Inverness and then down Loch Ness this summer, it’s about 130 miles so a nice trip over probably 4 days weather permitting. One other thing I want to keep the boom rigged. I see you have done that any advice. Thanks Donald Paterson.
