  • Last weekend I tested the XTAL VR headset with Flight Simulators and Racing Simulators, and compared it to the Pimax VR range and also other VR HMD brands. Is XTAL really the best VR headset for VR simulator enthusiast and fanatics? In this hands-on XTAL video, I will tell you everything you need to know in-depth, about the current XTAL version and it's latest improvements.
Check out XTAL on the official website:
    vrgineers.com/...
As of now, the XTAL headset is available for orders in EU and US.
XTAL is the most sophisticated VR headset on the market today, aimed mainly for professional work due to it's specifications and production costs. But the unit has now proved that it also can serve as a very potential high-end VR headset for Virtual Reality simulator training and gameplays on home consumer level. Todays hands-on review of XTAL, I'm going in deep on the functionality, the outstanding image quality and all the advantages a high-end headset can bring you, compared to the existing consumer grade products such as Pimax 5K+, Pimax 5K XR and the 8K.
Is XTAL the king of VR headsets for Flight and Racing Simulators? Let me know your thoughts in the comments down below.

Staying ahead of the curve when you get a return for it presents incredibly good value for ALL of these headsets that come out nowadays.
Now, if you have an R+D budget like an F1 team... even for single-use that big $$ is nothing to them!

XTAL told me that all SweViver Patrons get a 200 Euro discount on purchasing their superb VR headset. I became a Patron today. I've relied on your excellent IL2 (my use) comments about the Pimax and I'm glad you showed DCS. Can you comment or email me about how the XTAX might benefit distant aircraft type recognition in IL2? Currently, it seems that flat-screen users can more easily see the small characteristics of distant contacts and identify friend or foe in time to set up or avoid an attack. Even with my Vive Pro, even zoom images are so fuzzy it's hard to see the shape of wing taper or tips, location of radiator/cooler scoops, etc. that identify an aircraft as a Yak or a MiG or a 109 or 190 or an La-5 [or hopefully soon, a P-51!].

This should be a $1500us headset and they would make a killing. The other headset makers should take notice and i'm sure they have. This is what consumers want and quite frankly this is pretty much where all headsets should be at or close to at this stage in VR timeline. I really think they all are quite capable of making these screen doorless, sharp headsets but gain more money from consumers taking baby steps and getting everyone on the upgrade bandwagon.

I think the problem is the cost of all the included feutures (remember - this is an enterprise, not a consumer product), and I think that the manufacturing (and development) cost of optics is making this product expensive for the company as well. And they have to pay for everything that comes with being a company. I would not say they are making huge profits (yet).

Wait till XTAl release a version with built in tracking, the tracking clip is like 300 grams on its own and adds weight.

id really like to know what the costs of this are in the manufacture, not saying that Xtal marked the headset up absurdly to make it 5 grand, but because its the lenses that are making me interested. from how I understand it the reason that VR headsets look soo pixilated and low resolution is that the lenses are zooming in on the screen, it something that should be pretty obvious but it seems that a lot of the good VR headsets are not doing this, so id love to know how much they cost, if the lenses are 3K to make then the price is brutal but given some time we can get it down (but in a year or two maybe more). that said if this costs a lot of money because its a bunch of lesser cost items that are getting combined to cost a crap ton, well it may be nice to see a "budget" version of this headset. clearly, we don't need that high of a resolution in the headset because we don't have to fight the pixel magnification in the zoom of the lenses so a headset that only had 1080p or even 720p would be much clearer than a 2k panel which does have the zoom. as it stands i feel that 5 grand is just too much for the headset, something that really only exists to be bought by the corporate world.

I will give my opinion on what the XTAL gamer version will be. This is just my viewpoint from being involved in the prototyping/patenting process.
    1. They don’t have the economies of scale to bring this out on their own. So I’m pretty sure they are partnering with a much larger “gaming centric” company, Razer for instance. This new “gamer” centric headset will be branded as a Razer with maybe sub branding by VRGineers. This is just my educated guess.
    2. The gamer version of the XTAL will offer similar or even greater FOV than the commercial version. This is because XTAL doesn’t rely strictly on panel resolution for its image. XTALs strength is its lenses. By the time this gamer version is available the lens technology will have increased by leaps and bounds hence it will have greater FOV than the commercial one I’m buying.
    3. It will be price in the $900 to $1500 range. I’m considering this to be the sweet spot for “High end” PC gaming gear. This is right on the threshold, but I believe this will be an exponential leap in VR and hence it will receive crazy amounts of PR.
    4. I think this “gamer” version will be available sometime in 2020, more than likely spring to be entered into financial quarter of the beginning of the year, or fall to be entered into last quarter of financial year. It all depends on what Razer needs to boost its share prices.
    5. To cut costs more than likely this headset will have inside out tracking of some sort. It might not have the built in hand tracking. It probably will have a mechanical IPD adjustment as this is just flat out cheaper to do.
    6. I believe it will make use of foveated rendering of some sort but not 100% on that. Since XTAL seem to be masters of maximizing panel technology, it might not be needed.
So IMO the XTAL/Razer gaming version of this headset will truly be a generational leap. I expect it probably fall of 2020. I think VoodooDE/MRTV/Sweviver will have their beta headsets sometime in late fall of 2019.
We’ll circle back to this post in a year and see how close I was. 😉

Maybe the screen is little more distant from the lens than the Pimax. That could be why higher pixel density perception. But then the screen would have to be larger than the Pimax. And that could explain the bigger size of Xtal compare to Pimax headset.

  • @francescop1
    @francescop1 5 років тому

i don't understand why Pimax would go through all that trouble with the rendering pipeline and the distortion through the lesnes. It would make sense if they were able to get significatly more performance from the same GPU vs the XTAL. But according to this test, this is not the case.
That said, I know the XTAL is aimed at the pro market which has different needs to the consumer market, but there is no reason they could not release this at an affordable consumer price with some minor modications to the external hardware, while keeping the same lenses and screens.

Price is 4900 euro for the basic HMD plus another 200 euro for the steam vr tracking clip on module making 5100 euro. Compare that to StarVR One which was 3200 USD, about 2900 euro with steam VR tracking built in. In both cases you then need the base stations and controllers/wands. If you want steam VR 2.0 base stations, you can't get them yet without a Vive pro. I hope it will be possible to get them from Pimax or Valve soon.
Swweviver, how did you find it it X plane 11 compared to DCS. Was the clarity worse in X plane than DCS? Did you try the X plane Cessna 172 with Garmin 1000 EFIS and if so could you read the airspeed and altitude clearly on the PFD?
VRgineers have teased there will be 3 "breakthrough" upgrades to Xtal coming soon. Did they give any clue about these?
I think we should not buy Xtal now but wait for these new upgrades. I also want to try out StarVR one to compare with Xtal if it becomes available in the next few months.

I'm actually really interested in the new valve index, if their new lenses can help eliminate SDE like I've heard then its a buy for me. It will be time to ditch the old oculus and upgrade, I wanted to move on from oculus anyway as I feel their going in the wrong direction.

How would you say this compares to the StarVR one? Especially for SDE? Is the rendering done similarly on the StarVR?

It's great that this thing exists... If only it makes me less of a douche for wanting the Pimax! Hey, there are more expensive snobier things out there!
Then as you say... People pay thousands for flat tv screens... This seems way more worth the painful amount.

This, along with the VR body suit, will be released to companies, military, and government for simulations and training before commercial use. I can already say, it will take the US military 10-15 years to adopt these forms of training while the rest of the world has it.

A great video, thank you. The resolution is amazing! I don’t use a VR headset for my sim racing, but why is the FOV so distorted? I like an extended FOV as I enjoy seeing the interior of the car, but on my curved screen I don’t have the cigar-shape appearance and spindly arms.

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  5 років тому +5

Thanks man. Its only distorted when viewed at a flat monitor of course. In VR there is no distortion, not even in the peripheral edges!

I thoroughly enjoyed (excl. the price) the XTAL headset, when I tried it on (behind the XTAL booth) at VR Days in Amsterdam in 2018! Best quality! I assume the one you tried has a newer and improved firmware as well as display/lens.
Thanks for the well made in-depth video. Specially including the details about the screen and lens difference between Pimax and XTAL... If I could afford this XTAL headset, I'd probably need a bigger room with it too! xD

Great Compliment- Sweviver- this was the BEST video -I ever saw - the clearness and contrast by fluent movement-fantastic.. not fore everybody-but for eye-gourmets by special games -events - presentations - also the future of viewing-that we never will get on standard ways.. that is it - and it could make more fun than Hololens - AR - IMAX or something other . you - Sweviver have the most important promotion for an 3 Gen - Headset ..

One thing about what you said is not surprising. Even on a regular monitor, rendering in Native to the monitor is a MUCH sharper image than interpolating pixels by up/down scaling so looks like XTAL has taken the correct approach here and not the wrong one (Pimax). Also, I'm not sure why you mentioned "sweet spot" earlier in the video since you said it has Leap Motion eye tracking? Sweet spot would be wherever you look?

Funny intro!!! Watched it twice. And considering the price of Xtal, it is not even exaggerated. What is also interesting is that the Xtal boys managed to reach such high clarity, low SDE and high FOV without using a very high resolution, eliminating the need for foveated rendering. The Oculus team should really look into this...and else i hope they manage to get the price down to consumer level. Very promising thechnology so far (except the size and weight then)

I'm no VR expert, but it seems like the real difference in this headset is in the quality of the lenses. Regardless of advances in technology (panel tech, gfx rendering etc) good lenses are always going to be expensive to produce - just ask a Leica owner. Feels like this grade of quality is still a way off for the consumer market.

Hi Martin! Could you do a comparative benchmark between RTX 2080 and GTX 1080 Ti? From what I've seen (very limited info everywhere) the RTX 2080 should have much higher VR performance (based on various steam VR benchmarks like cyan room etc) but in reality it seems to perform considerably worse than the 1080 Ti.
