This is a guide to either replace or upgrade the DDR4 SODIMM RAM in your Acer Aspire A515-43 and other similar models.
You need a cross headed screwdriver, preferably a magnetic tipped one, a protective cloth and a pry tool or suitable flat edge tool to release the plastic tabs around the outside edges.
The RAM is DDR4 2666 in my unit and was 2x4GB sticks. You can buy suitable replacements here:

@@mikesunboxing In the interest of making your vids better for us idiots:
1- I forgot to remove the center screw so damaged the edge of the case trying to separate it. That screw is easy to overlook for an idiot.
2- I first thought the bracket that holds the memory would pop up to a 45 degree angle so I could insert the memory. I pulled on that bracket and bent the clips out that hold the memory. I thought they might release the bracket to 45 degrees. I them bent them out some more to insert the memory stick.
Whoops, the stick did not stay down after that with the clips bent apart, so I took some needle nose pliers and bent them back in.
3) For the fan, and in general, when taking out the connectors to the battery, fan, and other stuff, I didn't know which way to put them back in, metal conductors when plugged in should be up or down?
Some close ups of those actions would help alot.

This is seriously worth your time and money. I went based off of Mike's video and had no trouble upgrading my unit. I purchased a ram kit which came with 2 8gb ram sticks to replace the 1 8gb which was installed. I was having latency trouble using my Music Production software and this solved the issue instantly. Your PC will automatically recognize the new ram sticks and you will be on your way in no time. Took me less than 10 mins to do. Thanks again

What should you do if it isn’t recognizing the ram?
I'm literally cheesing right now. I've never upgraded hardware on a laptop before. Ordered some ram, popped them into the slots and BAM! I now have 16gb vs the 8gb stick that came with my Acer. Thank you!!!

Wow Mike, great video! Man ... I have suffered through so many videos of other Laptop upgrades that have terrible camera angles or the Tech has a desk that's piled up with junk! Very professional, good show!
My next step is to add an additional 2.5" SSD because the 128 GB NVMe M.2 SSD is just too small. Looks like Acer set this thing up from the factory with a 2.5" SSD "plastic caddy" and a ribbon cable is lying unconnected underneath. Next, I'll need to find your video on adding the 2.5" SSD.

I reccomend using a guitar pick or some kind of flat, thin, plastic material to pop open the laptop, be careful of speakers at the bottom of the back of the laptop as you could damage them if you wrench around in there. Generally this laptop is 'idiotproofed' of which means that everything in the laptop is upgradable in just seconds. Be sure to disconnect the battery and discharge the laptop by pressing the power button a couple of times with the laptop disconnected from it's battery to prevent any kind of damage, a lot of techs have said this laptop survived upgrades w/o this process but if you want to garuntee low risk, try that.

Hey, Im uprgrading to 16 GB, too. Does this mean you have to remove both 4GB RAMs and put the 16gb RAMin one slot while the other slot remains empty?

Did you upgrade with a single 16GB RAM stick? Mine currently has 4GB on board and 1 4GB in one slot for total of 8GB but I have 2 slots available.

Just ordered this laptop for college today and was very curious about a ram upgrade for my programming classes. This video helped loads, just one question. What is the difference between a cross headed screwdriver and a standard Phillips head? Is this a special one or will a Phillips work just fine?

if both slots are full you can only replace them, if you have a free slot you can upgrade and keep the existing stick

Hey Mike really love the breakdown on the Acer aspire. I have the Acer aspire A515-43. The main hard drive did not work from the moment of purchase. Needless to say it was a present and my wife did not feel like calling customer support so now the warranty has expired. It does not boot up. I believe the main hard drive has gone bad. How do I access it and where can I find a hard drive for it? Could you help me please

My laptop came with 1 8GB 1Rx8 pc4-2666v with an additional slot for another stick but in the task manager under performance it says the ram speed is 2400mhz form factor sodimm.
is it that the laptop can only read 2400hz and not 2666? Now, do u think I should by another 8gb 2666 for it or should I buy 2 8gb sticks of 2400? For better performance. What do you think?
the chipset is limited to support for 2400hz but i would buy another stick the same as you have installed for compatibility
Hi - I have this exact laptop but it's horribly slow. It came with 4 GB ram. I'm not a gamer but I do some light video editing and photoshop. Would adding another 8 GB for a total of 12 be sufficient for what I do, or do you recommend upgrading to 16 GB? Thanks!

Hi Mike: How about ESD concerns? I don't know if your table is protected or not but is placing laptop on a cloth a concern?
there will be a little static build up but not enough to damage the components and the cloth will prevent physical damage

Hey Mike! Quick question. I bought the version of this laptop with Ryzen 3 processor and Vega 3 GPU. It came with a pre-installed Samsung 4GB, 2666mhz, 260pin SoDIMM RAM stick. I currently have the exact same RAM stick (Samsung, 2666, 260, SoDIMM) except that the memory is 16GB. At the bare minimum I would like to upgrade to the new stick to give myself 16GB, but I am wondering if it is possible to install it in the second channel instead so that I might have 20GB of working RAM. Will this work???
yes that is okay some times the ram is soldered to the board so you have no choice

No need the gpu is in the cpu unless you have a slightly different model

Hello, I have an aspire a5 a515-51-58hd and I want to install a stick of ram I pulled out of another newer laptop that I upgraded. This laptop has no ram in the slot but when I install this stick of ddr4 4gb the laptop wont boot up. Will it not run with newer faster ram? I just thought it would run it underclocked at the max speed the laptop supports. Is there something I am missing? Thanks for your help!!
if there is soldered ram on the board already you will need to get ram of a similar spec to get it to run properly or the memory controller will fail

you need to either look at the physical RAM or check it in CPUZ they use different RAM from time to time

FAO any other viewers, I took Mike's info and searched more and it seems these laptops could be upgradable to a max of 20GB (starting with 4GB on-board & 4GB removable, upgradable to 16GB) or 32GB (starting with 2x 4GB removable, upgradable to 16GB each), depending on your laptop model. In any case 16GB seems to be the max per any upgradable slot wherever I have searched. Obviously, look inside the laptop before purchasing, as Mike mentions, to see how many sticks are removable

@@mikesunboxing no worries. Today I also learned that on the Crucial website there is an executable file to download that can auto-detect the current and max ram that a motherboard can accommodate. I used it and it was accurate. But I know you're promoting Integral ram now, which is what purchased. Handy tool all the same
I took your advice and just put a 16GB stick in the one slot available in my Aspire A515-46, for a total of 20GB. Works perfectly.

Btw shouldn't you have unplugged the battery first before removing the ram sticks?
best to take a look inside and see if the ram is two removable sticks or if one is soldered

Yes you can! pretty much the same ram and setup on that one i think although it seems like it only has one slot

I think it's fine to do it right out of the box. It's the BIOS that recognizes the new RAM. Changes to the OS through setup should have no effect on it.

most come with 2 sticks in dual channel
My acer 515-45 has 4gb ddr4 on board and 4gb ddr4 in sodimm slot. Upgrading to 20gb with a 16gb ddr4 would make this run in single channel mode as 4gb on board is soldered to the motherboard.
What option would be best using for games not aaa class and online etc
that is the best option it will still run dual but only for a part of the ram
Hey Mike, I have a A515-43-R19L. I have opened it and the two ram slot aren't identical. One says DDR 4 STD and the other DDR4 H=4.0R and has two little metal pins preventing me from putting the stick in and I can't find anything on this anywhere. Have you seen this before?

really you need to open it up to be sure, those models have been seen with both two slots and a soldered slot
I just ordered a Acer 5 slim A15-43-R19L , it comes with 4gb DDR4 , if I purchase another 4gb ram stick does it have to be DDR4 aswell ? Also I heard some people say don’t mix the ram sticks like a 4gb + an 8gb because supposedly it won’t run smoothly even tho you’re getting more ram

i would get another 8GB at the same speed. dual channel will still work to some extent and the extra RAM will outweigh the performance deficit

Did yours say 5.9 Usable out of 8Gb of ram before you upgraded to 16gb? Mine came with a single 4 stick and I added another 4 in it recently. However, it says I only have 5.9 usable out of the 8 instead of 7 which is expected and idk how to fix that.
you might have the onboard GPU set to 2GB rather than auto, so that sounds about right if it is

Yes you can there are a few options for upgrades on this model larger NVME drives or add a SSD on the SATA port

I will be looking to upgrade the ram and add an ssd to this soon but have a few questions as I'm not a tech guy lol with the ram, if it can be upgraded to 32GB ram, is that 2x 16GB ram cards or can it take 2x 32GB cards (64GB total)?... also would this accept a 1tb ssd? and lastly if you could recommend quality brands/makes of both ram cards and ssd as I don't want to buy rubbish or the wrong thing it would be much appreciated, thanks.

The motherboard can only support a max of 32GB ram, but it can accept 1tb ssd, just make sure it is the right form factor. If you have enough money for 64gb of ram on a laptop, buy a nicer laptop lol. good luck m8
@@nathanroberts833 Soon after buying 2x 16gb ram and a Samsung 860 Evo 2tb I realized I'd be better with a higher spec laptop so that will most likely be my next upgrade lolol will be looking for one I can add my newly purchased SSD and ram lol

From the UK so in £s, aspire 5 £399, 860 Evo 2tb £254, Crucial 2x 16gb ram £106 lol all purchased past couple months, should have went for higher spec laptop first but learning as I go and aspire 5 AMD Ryzen 5 AMD Radeon Vega 8 will do for now actually a nice little laptop for the price
What exactly do you mean by 'the ram isn't upgradable, but it is replaceable?" I currently have a single 4gb stick in mine, and have two 8gbs coming in the mail for a planned total of 16gb. Does this mean I won't be able to upgrade it, and it can only, at max, hold 4gb?
what i was trying to say is that to upgrade you need to replace the modules rather than add to them if you have already got two sticks installed

you can upgrade to a max of 32g over the two slots or if you have 4gb in one you could add another 16gb to make 20gb and probably best to remove the battery and power leads

What is the meximum capacity of Acer aspire 515-54 something I guess which has i3 11th gen 4gb ram and 256gb ssd can I remove the 4gb stick and add 2 8gb to make it 16 or it can only go to 8gb 4x2?
depends what is installed, a lot now two two slots with a single 8gb stick meaning you could in theory add a 16gb or 8gb to the existing 8GB
Mine is an Acere aspire 5 "A515-52-51TT" (i5-8265U 1.6 GHz with turbo boost up to 3.9 GHz), and the problem is that this particular model comes with an Optane Memory (in fact the sticker on the machine says 20Gb Memory: 16Gb Optane + 4Gb ram) . Now, I'll absolutely upgrade that 4gb ram (don't know why some people are installing 2600Mhz ram, when in the intel website is specifically said that this i5-8265U only manages 2400Ghz) and that ridiculous HDD 5400rpm for an M.2 or just an ssd, but I don't know if any change to the ram or the hard drive will affect the Optane Memory. If I buy a laptop that has two slots, but one is not upgradeable (8 RAM - so four and four presumably), but it says that it's upgradeable to 20 RAM, that would mean a four stick and a sixteen stick. But you're not really supposed to 'mix and match' sizes. Would it be okay? I'm looking a the ACER Aspire 5 A515-56G 15.6" Laptop - Intel® Core™ i5, 512 GB SSD, but would like 16GB for Lightroom.
yes that is often the way it is done with soldered or fixed ram, it does unbalance things a little but not much else you can do

Hi Mark, i've just upgraded my a315-42's ram, restarted my laptop, and it has shown a error massage.. the blue screen with :(
then i moved a little my screen and it turned blank
i thought it was restarting but it was very long and the fan is noisy, so i forced to shut down
idk if it was because i've cleaned the dust with a soft brush and a little tweezer ? or maybe it's the new ram ? (2400htz sodiumm 8go, normally the same as the other one)
do you have an idea of what it can be ?

I have Acer Aspire 5 (A515-51-517Y) with inbuilt RAM 2400 MHz, CL 17 .
Considering rest of the factors compatible, if I install 2666 MHz, CL 19 will it work??
should be okay altough the jump from CL19 to CL19 is a bit much so the system will probably go to CL19 for all

the original ram was 2666 but seems to default to 2400 regardless due to limitations in the chipset

I have an Acer Aspire 5 A515-53G. I want to upgrade however I cannot find a detailed specs of my RAM like "Type, Size, Speed and Voltage"(which as I can read from the comment section that these are important). Do you have an app where I can look into these?
