      A bishop or an overseer is not the same thing as being a pastor in charge of a local church. The apostles designated bishops, (plural), in all the local churches to oversee the activities and keep order in the local churches. They never called one person to be in charge as a pastor of a local church. This pastoral call is the most fake thing I have ever heard in church history.

    God blessed me with oratory skills and outside in the secular public, people have approached me to give their lives to Jesus. Am I a pastor? Nope. Have I thought about being a pastor? Yup. Have people told me I should be a pastor? Yup. Did seasoned pastors suggest that I be a pastor? Nope. Was that the right choice? Yup. Why? Because I can share the gospel to a special segment of people who may not actually go to a church. Do I have peace about it? Absolutely. Can I still serve and love God with all my heart, soul, and strength? Yes and Amen. May God direct you to fulfill your calling on your life. We are pastors but not all of us deliver sermons every week. I can’t wait to do all that He has called me to do so that in the end, I can say “Praise be to God! What a ride!”

    Thanks for this. I went to seminary and was in full-time ministry for the last three years convinced that I was called. But a few months ago a pastor told me that I had a good heart and knowledge and good teaching gifts but that I should not be a pastor. At first I didn't want accept what he told me, but then I realized he was right, so I quit ministry and now I have a secular job. Jeremiah 20:9-10
    Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name.” But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not. For I heard many mocking: “Fear on every side!” “Report,” they say, “and we will report it!” All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying, “Perhaps he can be induced; Then we will prevail against him, And we will take our revenge on him.”
    Perhaps there are many who become pastors because they seek the admiration of the congregation or they enjoy being the one with answers or being seen as close to God. But it is a servant's role and a serious one which should not be entered into lightly because pastors will give an account before God (James 3:1My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.). Having a talent, skill, gift, or even a heart that's in the right place is no substitute for a calling from God. If you have that calling you will be like the prophet Jeremiah who could not keep his mouth closed.

    Strongly disagree. I have seen excessive “cultural” bias and politics applied in churches over my 20 years of moving around with the Army. Some of our great Christian leaders of today would never have been lauded/ approved by some churches and elders. Go get after it. Learn and teach. The Lord will provide. Just have an open humble heart. I wish more Christians approached their faith from an educational perspective and learned the Bible in a wholistic way. We need more Christians on the street, as organizational Chaplains, in prisons, and just willing to teach to the people around them.

    I think that MANY Reformed churches mistakenly conflate the office of Pastor and the office of the Evangelist. Do you have a heart for the lost and reach them with the Good News? Then you are an evangelist. Also, a Pastor is not someone who teaches but also is adept at counseling. I think the Church has an unbliblical understanding at what the true role of a pastor and an evangelist is. They are NOT THE SAME! There is widespread "pastor burnout" because we have made two roles which are biblical distinct into one.

  • @soh581
    @soh581 5 років тому +4

    This makes sense to me. James 3:1 says “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” There are so many unfit pastors leading the flock because they “felt” called. The heart is deceitful above all things. Who can know it?(Jer 17:9). Being confirmed by elders and pastors having witnessed the person’s ability to lead a flock is a sure sign of leadership. The bible is full of “eye witness” testimonies. I would personally prefer a pastor who has been affirmed by many other pastors for their leadership ability over credentials or history of family pastors. I personally believe they should get affirmation by 3 or more. More witnesses, the better. I don’t think this is being narrow minded at all. Being a pastor is a serious job and one that should not be taken lightly. The road to eternal life is already narrow. The call to pastoralship I would believe is also narrow.

    For my biblical understanding over the last 5-10 years or so reminds me of a sieve or funnel. The funnel is where a mans life experience and subjective opinion are verified over time through circumstances in either an increasing or decreasing manner both inside the church through leadership/congregation and outside, ie a nack for computer programming or an opportunity seemingly from nowhere that gives peace and joy in believing you are ultimately doing what you are supposed to. One thing not mentioned in this video is how God -prepares- different men in different ways at different times the same way there are different species of animals, planet sizes and shapes etc. I don’t believe it is ever “black and white” in that sense and scripture verifies that. It’s also helpful to look at church history to throw a little more light on the shade. I doubt many believe that John Calvin was “called” but could have been just as an effective lawyer as a theologian. It would be ridiculous to think, “What if Spurgeon was actually supposed to be a grocer who got to share the gospel at work everyday.” For some it’s so obvious that it’s impossible to even put a subjective barometer to it, others not so much but still potentially called nonetheless. For me, the funnel works like this, Do you feel called to ministry? Great! Praise the Lord. Follow Paul, are you married? Ever divorced? Kids? Addicted? Do you naturally gravitate toward teaching, theology and “rightly dividing the word of God?” For some, this may not be as obvious in their twenties as it may in 30’s and 40’s etc. as they mature simply as spirit filled believers.But if you are truly called, as Burke also alluded to, the difficulty of the work is the passion and necessity to your soul and -over time- cannot fathom doing anything else in this life and world and finally the funnel end with opportunity, verification and fruit. Repeat.

    I feel I am called me a pastor but I don’t feel it’s the right time for me yet. I think part of it is mainly because I don’t have my name quite out there and I don’t know many pastors. I also don’t know many elders at all either. One of the things I’m learning through seminary books that I am reading on my own is you were born to be a pastor. It’s not something you choose but it’s something you become because God makes it so. I do think the elders are a good indicator that you are called but also it’s if God really is calling you in your heart. The reason why the Bible says have a good reputation is not your outside image but rather what the church thinks of you and if they see it in you.
    I do feel like I’m gonna be a pastor one day but not anytime soon. I don’t feel the timing is right in my life and I feel like I have to mature more in my face and who I am as a person. I fully intend to teach but right now I’m learning how to learn. My pastor has told me what I needed to do which is take five years and go from there. And so my Pastor is telling me the timing isn’t quite right to determine if I am going to be a pastor or not. So, he’s not saying that I’m not going to be but he saying right now the timing is not your time.
    I just like how straightforward you are about it because it really is straightforward. I can be the wisest most educated person at a seminary but it doesn’t make me qualified to be a pastor. However, I have dreams of preaching even before I was a Christian and I know dreams are a confirmation. But dreams I feel like God gives us to show us our desires, actually subconsciously dream show how you feel. So I have the desire to be at the pulpit but I understand I need to focus on my studies as a person. Not everyone should be a pastor and not everyone should go in the ministry the way that leaders are.
    Like Dr. Steven Lawson said, there’s two kinds of pastors. You’re either good at the pulpit or you should quit.
    I’m not the greatest at making friends and I’m not the greatest relationships but that means absolutely nothing to God because God creates pastors. He has complete sovereignty over who he gives authority to in a church and you never know I could become an elder in the future. 🤷🏻‍♂️ either way I trust in God‘s timing for my calling and I trusting God for the things that I’m doing now. I’m actually realizing how much I need to grow before pursuing being a pastor.

    This is not biblical. This is only human wisdom and what makes sense in his context. Man’s approval is NOT in the criteria. Gifts of the spirit are to be desired and asked for. Sure, God gives to those who don’t ask, but the scripture says to ask.
    Most men, even pastors will not approve and try to discourage you. Seek Godly council, but make sure they are counseling you along your path, not advising against it. Recognition of your gift and calling maybe from those you minister to. Also, if you are ministering on the streets, consider the difference in Evangelism and Pastoring. Both are different gifts.
    1Corinthians 12:27 “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. 28And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, and various kinds of tongues. 29All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? 30All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? 31But earnestly desire the greater gifts.
    And yet, I am going to show you a far better way.”
    Again desire is stated here, as well as criteria;
    1Timothy 3
    “1This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.”

    You know, I agree with most of what was said; the exception would be if the box that your current elders are in, or maybe even a wider group of men, is not outside of their circle of influence, it can be devastating for a man who has different culture or teaching approach. there are a lot of mini biblical world views that won't allow; lets say, a truck driver who lacks the language knowledge to take a small congregation because "he can't do anything else".

When I prayed I received a vision that I was holding a microphone and praying over someone. I was afraid, started crying, and began to pray. It's not something I would want to do. As I was praying, there was an earthquake nearby. I looked for "earthquakes during prayer" in the bible and was lead to Acts 16:25-26in the kjv which read "And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed." Is this a calling? @@phosphorescent1818 Of course you are saved and are going to heaven! I would turn to passages like Ephesians 1 that say:
      "Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, *even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world,* that we should be holy and blameless before him. *In love he predestined us for adoption to himself* as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will" (Ephesians 1:3-5)
      God chose you. If you are a part of his family, he chose you; he did this before the world even began and before you were even created. Romans 8:35 states, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?" and then Paul goes on to say later in verse 38 that "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of god in Christ Jesus our Lord."
      No word you could have accidentally said is covered within that list Paul gives (probably under 'anything else in creation' lol) and it could never throw you away from your eternal inheritance. And hey, brother, I love that you have a heart to reach others and evangelize; that's an awesome first step. But I don't want you to neglect the power of knowing God's Word. READ THE BIBLE! If you are not already doing that, I plead with you that you start. For how can you claim that God loves us if you have no evidence for it? And when people come to you with questions like the one you asked me about you going to heaven or hell, you should be prepared or know where to look in the Bible. If we haven't got the Bible, we haven't got much at all. But anyways, much love brother I pray that the Lord would continue to bring you to his truth day in and day out. Keep up the good fight!

      @@happywak110 thanks for clearing it up bro. I actually read the Bible everyday. I actually have read scripture and it says to trust Jesus Christ sacrifice that I am saved, but I’ve been having a feeling full of doubt. Even though the Word clearly says I am saved because Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. I just have this feeling where I’m going to hell for what I accidentally said even though Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. I actually had an evangelist tell me everything is fine and he even gave me some scripture to back it up, but I still doubt it. It’s just so much doubting my salvation, even though in the Bible it says I’m saved. I just gotta stop doubting. I literally am saved but I still doubt it for some reason. I gotta stop doubting. From what you told me, I’m done doubting my salvation. I’m done. Thank you bro. 🙏

    I've never been to seminary. Many of the results I've seen have been speculative at best. This practice of mere "men calling men" into Pastoring is part of the problem of this modern world. This is completely ignoring I Tim 1:3. If I Tim 1:3 is not in place all of the external confirmation in the world will not matter, and will only result in "angry young man" syndrome.

    What if I feel called to be a pastor and elders around me all look to me as one anyway. I have no college education and am in a totally different line of work but I have an ability to Understand and make digestible some of the more esoteric teachings. I’m a soldier, I’m flawed but I’m strong in Gods Spirit. He walks with me always and I don’t see college or seminary as a prerequisite. I mean on one hand I do but at the end of the day we’re beating Satan over here all day every day with God. Therefore, I’m as far as my ministry continues to bear Gods Fruits I see no man telling me otherwise. I do appreciate the attempt to dissuade though, it is not easy and definitely not for anyone not literally willing to sacrifice it all to God at any given time. Not easy but like he said in the video when you are doing this already in your daily life it only makes sense to carry over to others.

    Plz show this basis and definition of "calling" from scripture. Not interesting in any man's opinion.
    Nor am I interested claims of being "called by God" any more than I am interested in claims of "speaking in tongues." I've never heard a legit foreign language falling from unlearned lips; I've never heard of a verifiable instance of calling in the last two thousand years.
    Rather, I look back at the life of the man, at his devotion to accurately teaching the word, at his uncompromising stewardship of the flock. Then I think, "He was likely called."
    But this idea of unanimous elder confirmation is clearly extrabiblical, and thus utterly worthless.

      For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.
      The notion of being called to do something for God is ALL throughout scripture. And it is not confined to just ecclesiastical work. Even your “secular” work should be considered a calling, and I don’t think it´s confined by the witness of elders. He also neglected to mention that many are called to be evangelists, which is NOT the same as a pastor.

      I honestly believe that pastors are called by God. Who else would appoint Shepards over His flock? If a man is called and is not answering, he will be swallowed by a whale and spat out onto the shore. He won't be able to rest until he gets in the pulpit. He will be called and he will answer God in obedience. God is not ignored.

    1 Peter 5:1
    2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

    The word Pastor is not a calling its a gift. There is no scripture in the bible that support direct the calling of a pastor. Jesus said to the disciples GO! That commission is for the body of Christ. One does not have to be the Leader of a church to be called pastor. A pastor's assignment is to teach, nurture, and to help in guiding the believers according to the word. From the beginning the Elders are the ones that were in authority or head of the local church.

    No. There is a biblical way for the elders to elect and lay hands and the candidates are being made evident amongst us. As of today it looks that the reasoning for anointing new people in ministry is more subjective than objective and the obvious calling it is being disregarded in favour to those who obey theeade4s rather than those who follow tge Scriptures. This statement is highly irregular and it should be rephrased, but lot of prayer and fasting is needed. Very disappointing and saddening this video. Makes all the rest untrustworthy. I disagree because of James 3:1. There are so many unfit pastors leading the flock because they “felt” called. The heart is deceitful above all things. Who can know it?(Jer 17:9). Being confirmed by elders and pastors having witnessed the person’s ability to lead a flock is a sure sign of leadership. The bible is full of “eye witness” testimonies. I would personally prefer a pastor who has been confirmed by many other pastors for their leadership ability over credentials or history of family pastors.

For example, prophecy, dreams, mother’s dedication to God when the child was born, affirmed by seminaries, affirmed by Christian friends, affirmed by one’s situation, gift, Spirit’s guidance and so on.
