  • BBC News covering 'Operation Delivery' : a Police raid by 600 officers on the Black & White Cafe on Grosvenor Road and neighbouring premises in the St Pauls area of Bristol in 1986........
The Black & White Cafe was a famous 'Frontline' meeting place for Bristol's Afro Caribbean youths since the 1970s and a similar raid in 1980 triggered riots in the city 1 year before the famous Brixton and Toxteth Riots that kicked off in 1981...........
The Black & White cafe finally closed its door in 2004 - after 3 decades of effort by the Police and authorities to close it down :

I was 12 in 1986 and lived around the corner from Stokes Croft which borders St Paul's. I can remember walking home from school that day with some mates who lived in St Paul's and the police not letting them go home having blocked off City Road. Back then it was mainly just weed and sticky black you could get from the Frontline. This was a few years before crack came to town. Then shit got real!

Recall it well. We had an AfroCaribbean ‘gentleman’ break through the entrance door into our computer business…looking for his friend. My secretary managed to get the registration number of the car he drove off in with several other gentleman.
The following we were broken into and £250,000 of equipment stolen.
We gave the Police the car registration and the DI raised his eyebrows and said ‘Yes we know this gentleman well, they’re from St Paul’s’
We asked why they weren’t ‘going in’ to arrest them to be told that it was a designated ‘No go area’ for the Police.
These riots were the Genesis of a race card mentality to cover up criminal activities…Thank goodness St Paul’s was reclaimed by a law abiding, community eclectic, diverse and friendly community that had always been there but afraid to stand up and say NO!

The English cops looked like a different breed them days compared to now I would say in the 1960/1970s about 98 percent of police had racist views which were openly encouraged by their senior staff

At least they didn't get involved in politics like they do today. I think the police are less respected now than they were 30 years ago in most parts of the country.

She sounds like a racist. Afro Carribbean working class families worked different jobs in Bristol city. It's only the yardies that were involved in selling drugs and pimping women.

I was there too same in 1980 your going on as if I've said something negative about Irish and I'm part Irish? Yes they may well have helped but I cannot imagine them not wanting to. At the time I was living in a flat on the roundabout where City Road joined Ashley Road. We had a clear view of some of the battles. There was a group of 30 or 40 youngsters - pretty much a cross-section of the area’s blacks whites and asians - taunting police, throwing things, then running every which way when the police charged, only to regroup later and repeat the show.
So far as drug dealing at the Black and White, things seem to change in 1983/4. I sometimes bought weed there and never any problem. Then in 1984 someone sold me stalk shavings, I complained and he got very heavy, called his mate over. I guessed he was waiting from some white boy who couldn’t tell the difference. I walked away then went back having lost my temper. Stopped by a Rasta guy I knew. He told me they were bad people, best forget it, and sold me some good weed for a very good price. Found there was a lot of concern about the new breed of dealers, and that it was organised by people from outside of Bristol.

I remember going in the Black and White and getting searched cos I looked like 5-0 😂 Great times back in the late 90s for me around those streets. Also remember for long time armed police walking around regularly. Can anyone remember the name of the little cafe I used to go it 2 doors along from Criterion where Ashfield Place joined Ashley Road? Still a cafe there I think but it's changed names a few times and my old brain hankers after the name of the place I had some happy interesting times in!

That miniature riot started over an Irish and English man having a heavy dispute. The Irish and the coloureds was thrown into communities together in America and the UK through the generations they forgot who's side they was on. But hey they had another for a while. Now it's all too late the state has won by a landslide. Good luck getting out of our future now, we are forced together lime sardines and soon the big infrastructure will collapse. Farmers can't keep up with demands. The poor areas will fall it first and the poorer you are the more you breed and the more violent you become. Sad times awaited our tiny little nation with overpopulation and mass division with segregation. Big brother won. Escape the cage.
