This Is "Britain's Most Dangerous Road" ~20 Years On

  • Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Stapleton Road in Easton, Bristol was widely regarded as one of, if not the most dangerous roads in the country.
    Whether it actually was the worst road in the country or not is up for debate, but the facts don’t lie - it was crazy dangerous.
    In this video, I took a look at Stapleton Road today, as well as the surrounding area of Easton, which viewers have been telling me is the most dangerous area in Bristol.
    I saw some pretty crazy stuff; litter, evidence of drinking and drug use, flytipping, etc.

      The reason Easton isnt higher is because blacks dont report crime as much as other groups.
      They have an anti-police bias.
      Plus just exhaustion. If everyday there is crime, it becomes a normal part of life, not worth reporting.

    Lived in Easton 40 years ago (Chaplin Road). At the time, I had a young family and kept a machete under the bed. We were crazy poor and luckily, I managed to get a job in another part of the country. Not the greatest place to raise a family and I don't recommend the experience. Nowadays I own and live on a large rural property in New Zealand. Strange how things have turned out. Flaxen Saxon.

    Great video! Sadly, BCC is one of the worst councils, I came acros in the UK when it comes tp addressing inequalities and managing urban infrastructure. Despite their shiny policies and empty claims, the reality is that city is divided into areas where some level of management and upkeep exist (mostly Cotham, Clifton and Harbourside ) and the rest of the city is in a staggering state of decay. Lack of decent public transport, poor lightining, potholes, pavements suitable for trekking shoes, flooding after every rain, rubbish piling up, crime, filth and rodents.

      Yes, I have friends in Bristol and have seen most of it over the years now, the good and bad, and I agree. The contrast between the expensive and poor areas is staggering, it’s going to backfire at some point as the borders are getting more blurred all the time. And not to mention it’s unbearable to drive around for the most part 😅

      It’s because they pissed all the money on Cabbot Circus and now can’t maintain it and they keep messing with the roads because they fucked it the first time.
      They didn’t realise that Bristol was a big place for events and that was the backbone of its revenue. They thought they could replace it with revenue from high end retail in a city where most of the people looked like greenpeace mercenaries.
      Now they’re gone, so is the money because they weren’t as poor as they looked and bought people from all over the country with the events they used to put on which got the big £ coming in.
      People don’t shop in the same place for long.
      They here about a new place, flock to it and then move to the next one.
      Night life is a far more sustainable economic model as proven by Bristol.
      Martin Rees destroyed the city by choking the life out of it.

    This is so horrendously sad. I was born and raised in the UK, got drunk and married an American with whom I lived happily with until his death! I have returned to UK 22 times over the last 30 years and I am literally devastated as to how it has changed. Is it caused more by the British people living there or is it made worse by illegals coming in and immigrants? I do not know but I am sad. Well, also sad is I have had a gun in my possession for 22 years and have never run across a violent situation since moving here (lucky!) but enough is enough. This is revolting, disgusting and pitiful and I am sorry people are suffering with this kind of crap close to where they are living.

    • @thathurt
      @thathurt 6 місяців тому +7

      I think it's a mixture of things including Tory Government and capitalism. People can't afford stable housing. Rent or buy. Immigration forces rent prices up and keeps wages low. Drugs gangs and addiction are a huge factor. The breakdown of the family unit too. Changing values and standards.. This is true of nearly anywhere in the UK. though. It's a depressing rat race for many. Once the boomer generation die out who knows.

    • @tinachristine4573
      @tinachristine4573 6 місяців тому +13

      Mate, no one will ever draw a gun on you in the UK. That's like crazy organised crime stuff. Here you'll get low level smash and grab kind of property crime eg car or house break ins, maybe witnessing a drug deal in progress, antisocial behaviour like loitering, street graffiti, damage to abandoned property, throwing litter around, drunken Street fights, and gang members stabbing each other in London. The UK may look less pretty compared to the US but I can go to Stapleton at night and get out of my car to go to a shop or a pharmacy (which I have done many times) and yet I can't think of going to downtown L.A. during the day in a car.
      Most 'illegals' here in the UK actually have an incentive not to engage in criminal activity. If they live here without breaking any laws for 10 years, they have a right to residency.
      So, Janet honey, don't equate being foreign with being a criminal. And all of our ancestors at one point were foreigners in the lands we now call home. Be humble.

    • @Silent002
      @Silent002 6 місяців тому +5

      Well, according to the ONS, there was a net migration of 2 million people into the UK between 2011 and 2021 and 6.8 million births, therefore it's 3.4 times more likely the issue is with British people rather than immigrants. I know that's a simplification since 1-year-olds ain't going to be breaking into cars and that we should be comparing the births from 1991-2001 to immigration between 2011-2021 instead, but that's skipping over the real issue in the UK - the gap between the richest and the poorest is getting wildly out of control. Since 1970, income share for the top 10% has ballooned whilst income for the bottom 50% has reduced or remained stagnant, all while living costs in the past 30 years have risen. So you've got people unable to make a decent living going straight and more people on the upper end looking like larger targets than ever, it's not really that surprising that some people have decided to take back what society has leached from them.
      It's easier for most older people to blame the anonymous brown man that just walked into town rather than the government, though 🤷‍♂.

    You have the most amazing speaking voice! It just adds to the quality of your videos which I find very interesting and entertaining.
    Really opening up my eyes to the conditions in so many of these UK towns. I knew some were bad areas but I had no idea there were so many.
    What’s sad is that you can tell with some of these housing estates that they were really nice when they were new and I’m sure the first people that lived there were really happy.
    But as you have said, the loss of the industrial jobs has really crippled so many parts of the UK, put on top of that the current financial situation for so many.
    the government really needs to get it in gear and at least keep the junk and trash picked up. They could employ entire groups of people, pay them a really good wage to go around and just clean.

    My cousins are proud Bristolians so I’ve seen a bit of the city (clearly, not all bad). However, they’ve told me the odd haunting story. A friend of theirs was walking back through an area like Easton and got randomly hit on the head with a sledgehammer. Had major PTSD afterwards. And less gravely when we went out to a local pub in St Paul’s, my cousin’s bike was stolen. I’m stunned at the house prices: it’s not far off Colchester where such houses are ensconced in bourgeois enclaves!

Most steal to live I blame the government. People haven't got any hope, no inspiration to do better. Low wages, overcrowding houses, high tax on wages if you work overtime for extra money. Its got lots of great food places and is always busy.
    The place does struggle with litter/flytipping, homelessness and hard drug use.
    The flytipping is so frustrating, but it is something that will be done by people more desperate for money, perhaps more support can be given from local councils.
    The homelessness is quite a wide spread problem on this side of Bristol, stretching from the centre. All I see are some city center charities trying to help, but i think more support for these people is required on a city or regional level.
