Cool lesson man. I've been playing punk for 21 years. I just want to say: People. If music is good, it's good. If it's not your type of music, that's OK. No need to get mad or nasty. Stop nit-picking everything and just enjoy music as a whole and stop worrying about genre. Geez.
Dude nicely put I commented on this big hate war that they were throwing it into a bigger more complex picture than it is. It's about the music not the type of chords used or what the lyrics are about its either good or its not.
Only enjoy music that says something worth saying, not music that says stupid stuff. Punk is about fighting stupid. If you are playing it, you need to fight stupid.
To all the haters, all of what is shown here can easily be a bad religion tutorial. He used all the tecniques of every bad religion song except the soloing. Muting, accents, letting ring a chord. Its an amazing basic video to get into punk. All the tecniques he showed are used by the ramones, exploited and etc Some bands use faster tempos and faster muting but the basics are all here
can everyone stop hating on green day and pretentiously naming "real punk bands". we get it. green day is pop punk. he even said it in the video. now please leave the comments to discuss the actual content rather than one minor detail at the beginning of the video. thanks.
bistyboy the only people who do that are pretentious. I love Green Day because of my high school days but I love more thrash and speed metal now. A lot of people like Green Day but like heavier stuff now and most don’t shit on green day
Green day is actually alternate rock according to google they ain't always pop punk mainly punk yes but not pop punk pop punk is like blink 182 and all that and punk ock is like ya whole Ramones and shit green day is either pop punk or punk rock or whatever stlye or genre they choose
about time they put up a punk lesson....been playing punk since I started guitar and it is the funnest style of music to play in a band hands down. so much fun to just feed off one another...good job guys. DO MORE PUNK LESSONS!!!
Punk gave birth to thrash metal bands like Metallica and Slayer. I see a lot of things in riffs from thrash metal taken from the hard hitting power chords of punk! Sex Pistols and Ramones will always have a special place in my heart as the godfathers of punk rock!
Man...punk people give a lot negative feedback....I saw the Ramones live....wow wish I could do that...I take a lot of crap for trying to play punk at 54...and a stash from the70's thus I feel at home ..I really learned from this lesson...great place to start....most lessons are over my head....hey posers...my friends and I jumped the fence at uc Berkeley to see the Ramones... That's punk......
Love the ramones, Fat mike of NOFX is still going strong at 47, John lydon is still doing PIL! You're never too old for punk, it means freedom, even musically. keep at it man, and fuck, you're lucky being able to see the ramones live!
KNIFE PLISKIN that's how the name of the band is spelled u fucking idiot look it up U obviously don't know anything about punk if u don't know who the decendents are they pioneered pop punk
KNIFE PLISKIN first of all dude your the one who started this whole thing and that's the way the band name is spelled if your actually a fan you would know that and btw I don't listen to blink, Green Day, or new found glory. Idk what your deal is I'm sure you have nothing better to with your life than call people posers on UA-cam all I said was that he's missing the descendents which are arguably one of the best punk bands of all time and influenced tons of band. If your a fan of them why are u arguing with me and calling me a poser?
I'm a very simple rhythm skate and pop punk kinda guitar player, I couldn't play an actual lead to save someone's guitar 😂. I talk to a guy who's a crazy shredder and he told me he wished he could play rhythm stuff like me and I was kinda taken aback, he said he can't do rhythm. My son is a worship guitarist at church and his style is a lead style and when he and I both play guitar at home it works really well because he's doing cool leads why i keep the rhythm 👍
I get the lesson. I started playing guitar 15 years ago b/c of bands like Green Day, Mest, Goldfinger, and The Ataris. My first couple of bands were pop punk bands. It taught me how to play in time and off of the drummer and how to "hear" the strumming pattern to a song. a valuable skill that is lost on today's "tab-reliant" guitar players. The lesson is obviously aimed at beginners but thanks for the trip down memory lane, 90's pop punk, fast tempos with odd time signatures.
This is a great lesson and so often overlooked. Thanks for posting. After 25yrs playing, one thing I run into all the time, is when so many new guitarists cannot play even decent rhythm. The guitar is basically uselss if you can't play chords and strum properly. BTW, he used Green Day as an example only, because lots of the viewers are young kids. Cool it with the insults people. He's teaching guitar, not music genre history.......Thanks!! jm
Haha! Hell yea, I know everyone that is into punk rock was feelin it at 4:37. And you are right about the rhythm, when your at a show that’s where it’s at is in the rhythm that’s what gets everyone slamming!
Awesome video...you actually made it easy! And while you may not be punk you could definitely play in any punk band with easy!!! Thanks so much for your time!! Respect!
green day was punk in their early albums which i consider to be their best albums. now they make good alt songs tho. check out armatage shanks, welcome to paradise, welcome to palasaqua, longview, basket case, brain stew, hitchin a ride. those are punk
Shouldn't it not matter the punk band he is talking about? Yes I know the genre differences punk, pop punk, punk rock etc. they still are all following the same thing which is punk lyrics and lifestyle...just because you don't consider Green Day true punk...they aren't but they still are in a genre in there somewhere
Looked at this out of curiousity. Then I realised I couldn't do it. Always something new to learn, love Green Day and always loved the Clash. thanks for posting, I'll check out some of your other stuff. Sure are a lot of bonehead comments on here, you don't deserve that, thanks for your time.
I feel depressed every time some one links the words green and day and punk in the same sentence. I feel happy when they link the words Blitz sham69 slaughter and the dogs and crass and punk.
I was encourage a guy today to learn how to play and I told him how many great teachings for free are on UA-cam with sincere good teachers. He was shocked - but it is true, You are one of those guys- THANKS! pUnk is cool because it bends the rules without breaking the golden rule_ never bore the listener...
Neat-- this is a great lesson. Always solid stuff from these guys... (Marty and Papa Stache) I'm familiar with most of the common progressions and can lock in with a drummer. There are a handful of guitar techniques exclusive to punk. I don't know them, I'm sort of asking. ... Is there a followup to this lesson on punk soloing. Thanks-- when I try to do my standard Aminor Blues (Pentatonic) Box... patterns 1-5, it comes off sounding like a blues jam. I can't name them but playing in octaves, double stops, palm muting (but these are standard) seem to be useful. Finally... I notice a lot of the solos are duplicating the vocal line. Alight cool.
I'm sick of people saying Green Day and Sum 41 aren't punk, you dont have to be from the 80's to be punk, th Ramones had so many really poppy (if thats a word) songs, a lot of punk bands did, now Uno, Dos, and Tre arent exactly punk but even that is kinda borderline, punk isn't just a sound, its the lyrics and what youre singing about. Obviously it is music genre so theres a certain point where you can have a punk message and not be a punk band because of the sound but Green Day and Sum 41 are deffinatly more punk than any other genre. Maybe kind of on the pop punk side but it seems like every punk band that wasnt from the late 70's or the 80's is just labeled pop punk. Which is ridiculous. Just cause somethings new and popular in the punk world doesn't mean its pop punk or not "real punk". Sorry i sound like a total music snob but its really fucking irratating. Punk is an entire genre, not a small group of bands from the 80's. But don't get me wrong, The Ramones, Misfits, Bad Religion, Anti Flag, NOFX, Sex Pistols, Subhuman, etc. are all awesome bands and deffinatly legends, especially in punk rock
Anti-Flag sold out hard as fuck and turned super gay. Same with AFI. Also, there is no such thing as "real punk" fuck everyone that gives a shit that much about a music genre, they obviously only know punk from cds and not actually living it.
I'm sort of mad after this video, this whole time I've been teaching myself to play the guitar and I've been learning power chords. I didn't know punk players muted strings that weren't supposed to be played. So learning how to play got a little easier.
green day is just an average punk rock band, check out bad religion, nofx, rancid, the dwarves, us bombs, vision, and the older bands like sex pistols, ramones, misfits, germs, the descendents, dead kennedys, black flag, etc etc.....but for guitar purposes green day is a good one because billy joe writes pretty simple yet really tight guitar riffs....
Deepfriedpunkaceratops aw come on man, i know a lot of people think theyre overrated, but nevermind the bollocks heres the sex pistols is a great punk rock album. real fun rock n roll, but the ramones and the misfits are much better for sure as well as many other punk bands....
We're talking about punk and the first (only?) band mentioned is Green Day? What of the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, the Clash? Infinitely more punk than freakin' Green Day.
Thanks for this great lesson. Can you please let me know where on the web I can get drum loops (beside paying for garageband and and buying a mac). Maybe if you don't know, you can leave up my request so others that watch your lessons can contact me. thanks

exactly heck take U2 and the Edge the dude made a fortune playing basic chords!
Well said

Only partially. Aggressiveness yes. But the rest is pure metal.
@@OriginalKingRichTv you’ve never listened to any dbeat have you
@@mcbrodz1663 it’s in the same genre, just a different sub genre
I never thought George Harrison would teach me how to play punk, pretty cool 🤘🏻
if punk is fighting over what is punk, screw punk.

You must have some crazy stories. I respect the older guys like you keep at it man, and just rock on.
I'm 53 and love playing it. Do what makes you happy

Man I saw this video when it came out and 10yrs later it just popped up 👍
I know this was a long time ago but papa I am a 40 year old new guitar player that grew up on punk, this was a great lesson! Thanks!

...octave chords, unison bends, pick slides, hammer ons and did I mention pick slides??
am i the only person who likes both modern punk like green day and blink 182 but also enjoys the ramones, sex pistols, black flag etc
No
Green Day =
Billie Jo Armstrong = Lead / Rythim Guitar
Mike Dirnt = Bass Guitar
Trè Cool = Drums
And occasionally...
Jason White = Lead Guitar
Great lesson. Ready to write some punk songs now. Just saw 'The Punk Singer' which motivated.
I've always played guitar, but just recently got in to punk now that I'm in high school, this video was awesome, helped a lot
long story short; I learn something very useful every time I look you this stuff.
Great lesson. KILLER strat!

Had a lot of fun watching this. You're an amazing teacher!
Thanks for the lesson! Very cool! I appreciate you doing these for free too - donating your time is a wonderful thing!
God Bless!
Great video! This really helped me to figure out this strumming style. I am so used to metal style that punk as easy as it is, it's hard for me! :D
Great job. I like the way you went deep into syncing up with the drums and went through some cool options and ideas. p.s. That porn 'stache rules!
Awesome video...you actually made it easy! And while you may not be punk you could definitely play in any punk band with easy!!! Thanks so much for your time!! Respect!
Thats exactly what i was looking for. Great video man, thank you!
Didn't know that Andrea Pirlo can play the guitar...
Andrea Pirlo can do everything.
Very good basic video on synching with drums
green day was punk in their early albums which i consider to be their best albums. now they make good alt songs tho. check out armatage shanks, welcome to paradise, welcome to palasaqua, longview, basket case, brain stew, hitchin a ride. those are punk
Semantics aside, How about a lesson on adding hooks/leads/melodies/flourishes to a punk style rhythm?
great beginner lesson for punk
Shouldn't it not matter the punk band he is talking about? this is wonderful!!!

To be fair, The Clash were really cool.
Exploited riffs are classic punk riffs too
Really good lesson, Sir. At least someone said something important about punk rock.
i like green day i dont see what the big deal is, but my ALL TIME FAVORITE HARDCORE PUNK ROCK BAND IS...... FALL OUT BOY!!!!!!!!
Lmfao. That's not hard-core.

I like punk too..currently trying to learn drop d metal but I allways end up playing punk...

Punk rock is my life :3. I want to start a punk band but i need to know how to play punk on guitar so thank you
This was a really great lesson, thanks
Any tips to getting away from that habbit of always wanting to follow the kick drum and snare???
SWEET guitar dude!
Cool always wanted to know how the do it cheers
Love that kind of rhythm
"down down up up down..."
there you got your punk lyrics.
cool chord style goes way way back

green day is just an average punk rock band, check out bad religion, nofx, rancid, the dwarves, us bombs, vision, and the older bands like sex pistols, ramones, misfits, germs, the descendents, dead kennedys, black flag, etc etc.....but for guitar purposes green day is a good one because billy joe writes pretty simple yet really tight guitar riffs....

man its hard for me to. greenday was good back in the 90s and thats it imo.
cool story bro, ive just heard it in one of their songs.
Cracking lesson my man 🤟🏻
