Nolly did such a good job with the production on the album. The mix is fantastic, and they made the ending sound HUGE. As for the lyrics, supposedly they're about Spencer's wife (at the time) supporting him while he battled against a drug addiction. He's dedicated the song to her during live performances when they were together. That doesn't make the lyrics any less cheesy, but it does at least add some context.
Either way, glad you gave them another listen. Cheers

I don’t even mind cheesy lyrics that much, tbh. Biffy Clyro has a song about the same thing and their lyrics are absolutely fucking atrocious 😂😂 but yeah, that ending was incredible, I was shook lol

@@markabusireactions If you want another Periphery song to check out, "It's Only Smiles" off the Hail Stan album is a good one. It was my introduction to Periphery (I was late to the party) and it got me hook, line, and sinker. It might be more to your taste since you're not a huge fan of Spencer's screaming. He only screams 3 words.

Your suggestion that they run the choir/chorus of vocals another measure or two at the end of the song to finish it off? That basically is what happens live. Cuz _what_ song could possibly have a better audience participation section than that chorus of voices singing “whoooooaa”. They usually close out their shows with Lune, and the audience keeps singing the “whoa-ohs” after the song ends, basically exactly how you described it. might want to check out the version of Lune on their Live in London album from like 2 years ago.
I can’t argue or deny that the lyrics are a bit cheesy, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing? The sort of simple/straightforward nature of the lyrics make the song feel more genuine to me, and feels like it connects with more people.

I don’t really think it’s that bad of a thing with the lyrics tbh. But my job is to pick holes in things. Kinda. I always try to do a balanced review of a song, and if I notice something I’ll say it, doesn’t always mean it’s putting me off the song! Usually it’s just more of ‘oh that’s a thing,’ kinda comment 😂

If you haven’t done so already, I highly recommend you listen to their song Satellites. Especially if you love the instrumentation/orchestral arrangements.

This was the first song I ever heard by Periphery and I was instantly hooked. This is truly a masterpiece.
Coming back at the end to say no I don't think you're wrong for dissing the lyrics. They're definitely not the most complicated ones that Periphery have written. But my god, the arrangement and the ENDING absolutely make up for it, 10000000%.

Periphery scratches that itch for me of ‘early 2000s American emo music of my childhood but make it prog metal’ 😂 their stuff isn’t as refined as other bands, but this is a fricking banger and it does what it does so brilliantly.

that final chorus with the strings doing the motif from the end of absolomb (and the way the news goes) from earlier in the album is so good. say what you will about the cheesy lyrics but spence delivers the emotion with em

I don’t think anyone else has mentioned it yet, but I know you did a reaction to absolomb as well, which has a lovely orchestral outro in it. The theme in that outro is sort of a through line in that album and shows up during this song as well (which is the closing track).
Also, they’ve used this song to close shows many times in the past and it’s wonderful, that final bit is a great opportunity for some crowd participation and it really brings everyone together.

The instrumentations, man... THE FREAKING INSTRUMENTATION!!!
It sells the song to me. The vocals are great, and the lyrics are top-notch. But it's the cadence and instrumentation which kept me hooked from beginning to end. And similar to Absolomb, the last part transitions into a wondrous instrumental segment.

Mood: Outro to an X-Men film where Cyclops has just sacrificed himself in the volcano for Jean (or somesuch).
I wonder whether the last section hits different because they moved out of the 7/4 tension to the serenity of the straight 4/4 timing.

You know, you might be onto something. I find it impossible to relax to 7/8, it’s always… too busy? In my head, anyway. But as soon as it hit the 4/4… absolutely gorgeous 😂

Check out The Way the News Goes, Satelites, Reptile and Garden in the Bones. You won't regret any of these picks Mark. Spencer Sotello's range is on show especially on Satelites.

Me, an ameican, drunk after a shift at the factory: i can tell he's saying words but...
Jokes aside lmao, Good vid tho.
Love this song. Sonically it speaks for its self.
Lyrically, i thought about it for a while. And i'm pretty sure lyrically Lune is a love song to the fans from spencers perspective.
On the surface it seems just like just another love song but if you know how spencer was not exactly loved at first. I mean die hard fans love p1 and p2 but juggernaut went a different direction and a lot of people were like fuck that. I mean shit a lot of people said fuck that to p2 as well. And i really do feel like this is a song from the heart from Spencer to the fans that stuck around and gave him the chance and reassurance to keep going with it.
"Heavy eyes but the tongue wont stutter, mouths are moving and this hearts still fluttering"
Im tired of bleeding my heart and body for people to not appreciate it, but there are a ton of people who come to see us and love it and ive still got a passion for this.
"You found in the cold now i am wrapped within the warmth of your touch, theres never a moment that i'd let slip by in your eyes. Are we growing old or am i melting in the rays of this love, never ever gonna let you go"
I mean if you look at it through that same perspective, i feel it becomes self explanitory.
All that being said, lune is such an emotionally charged somg in every way and absolutely that ending was one of the most epic thing ive ever heard as well.

They have a handful of these songs that are just beautiful. I think you would like Caligula's Horse and Leprous (if u dont already know them) since you don't like harsh vocals. Great prog bands.

"I'm in no position to talk... and yet here I am." It's entertainment, if you are not entertained, that's your opinion of the music. It's not definitive, nor are you claiming it is. We're watching for your opinion. Not because you're the greatest expert on lyrics. Because we like you, and are just interested in what you think. Here's some unsolicited advice... stop apologizing. You haven't done anything for which one is required.
On the other hand, the self-effacing style you have is charming, so... whatever, all good. :)

I think, Periphery is like a "mood"? IDK if I'm using that concept right, but they make music where it's like, it kinda pulls me out of my vibe and thus while I find it commands my attention well, I guess I don't really like it because I can't really lose myself in it?

  • @mylife1221

ugh, the lyrics in that video are completely wrong and it's making me cringe lol.
this was the first periphery song to make me cry. i think it was this song that made me realise just how much i needed this band.
you should totally check out kaylene barber's vocal cover of this song. she puts an amazing twist on it, and i feel like you'll really get a kick from her voice.

I reckon that’s probably a good thing though lol. I’ll admit, it’s a bit weird that I like metal music other than probably the main thing that makes it metal 😂
