This game arguably signified the end of the NBA's "golden age", which started with the 1984 NBA Finals. What shortly followed was a series of negative events that hit the NBA: the 1998-99 lockout, Michael Jordan's 2nd retirement, the San Antonio Spurs beginning to dominate (beginning in the aforementioned lockout year) with their brand of "boring basketball", NBC losing the TV rights to ABC/ESPN, etc.
+Terrence Clay I don't see how the Spurs rise is a part of negative events, I don't find their basketball "boring", besides, I won't call them "dominant" , till this day, they didn't manage to repeat championships, I'd rather rephrase it and say, the rise of the Lakers and all the suspicious events surrounding their championships, especially their 2002 West finals against the Kings, Tim donaghy's huge scandal, and the bloating of LBJ
NO..........lame soft era.....how would Steph fair back then....?....well pretty much the same way his dad dell did ......solid player no doubt.....but that's it....solid......@@tristanrangel8968
The NBA on NBC music just gets me pumped up. Those were the days. And Bob Costas' line about Rodman - "Dennis Rodman doesn't prefer Utah, at least it's close to Vegas." That was priceless.
This was the final game of the NBA's roughly 17 year golden era, starting with Magic's MVP performance in Game Six of the 1980 NBA Finals. It wasn't just Jordan's retirement, it was the lockout that also started the league's decline. Of course, there's been just an awesome year for the NBA this season, and if a great playoffs culminate with *fingers crossed* a Celtics-Lakers Finals...we could be heading back to glory as fans.
….. no, nothing against those sixers teams, but it really took off in that ‘84 finals. That 80 sixers collapse and “ ‘fo ‘fo ‘fo” 83 sixers were for sure the prelude/ buildup to the golden era.
The last game of the Golden Age of the NBA. I grew up in Salt Lake between 1982-1995. I wasn’t in Salt Lake during the Finals as I was in the Alaskan Bearings Sea with the Coast Guard during this time. My younger Brother actually recorded these games for me so I could watch them later on VHS. He shipped them out to me. That was pretty cool of him.
And as long as Disney, ABC, and ESPN has the NBA, the NBA's ratings will continue to stink the way it does now. CBS started the trend of basketball's booming popularity w/ the likes of Bird, Magic, Dr. J, and Isiah. NBC did a outstanding job picking up where CBS left off and took the NBA to new ratings highs w/ the likes of Jordan, Hakeem, D. Robinson, Duncan, Shaq, and even Kobe in his early years. ABC/ESPN took the NBA to new high-LOWS. Their 2007 NBA Finals games were beyond horrific.
@@bumblebity2902 it doesn't matter what u have to carry didn't they win 3 games 🤔🤔...didn't kobe play awful in the most important game...game 7 smh....it doesn't matter what round...losing 3 st8 in any round is crazy...

Closing moments of game six of the NBA Finals of 1998: John Stockton's 3 point basket gives the Jazz a 3 point lead, Air Jordan score the last 4 points to win the championship.
Much as I appreciate Bob Costas commentary, this game just feels different with him calling it instead of Marv Albert. If it werent for his problem with a rape case (I think), this would've made an already epic game even more iconic.
I'm guessing the reason the nba isnt on nbc anymore is because espn, tnt, abc, etc. offered more money than nbc to televise the games. I miss nbc and its sad that it stopped televising nba games around 2002. I like tnt alright, but abc and espn suck. Bring back nbc!!!!
2:04 "Scottie Pippen, whose MVP chances for the Final may have been hurt by his two of sixteen shooting on Friday night." No, I think his MVP chances were always hurt because he played on the GREATEST'S team. Could you imagine MJ not winning the Finals MVP?
If we knew what we had, i would of enjoyed it more not know sports would be trash after 2006. Music sucks, sports suck, everything sucks now. Sad world 😢
Best Intro music....NBA on NBC made you want to watch the game.....NBA on ABC has the worst music for the NBA......PussyCat dolls look good but plz use a different song
YES THE JAZZ WERE ROBBED!! See cydonia comment below. The jazz were the better team that year. They swept the season series against Chicago. At the very least, they should've played game 7 in Utah and I think we would've won. But nobody ever talks about it because everyone loves Michael Jordan and everyone hates Utah
Ken R Obviously u haven't watched the game or you're lying about what happened in the game in which u have NO integrity and u need to grow the fuck up. I can easily tell you're a child by calling someone a faggot
Devin Kendrick A 3 pointer wrongly 3 taken away from eisley in the 2nd quarter on a shot clock violation. Then a bucket wrongly given to Ron Harper in the 4th quarter on a missed shot clock violation. Then a wrongly called blocking foul on Stockton when a charge should've been called on MJ with 1 minute left and got free throws. A 7 point swing on bad calls for the bulls against the jazz
Devin Kendrick I disagree it was a total charge on MJ. But the missed shot clock violation s and MJs push off. All points going against the jazz and directly impacting the outcome of the game. Had any of those plays been called right the jazz win the game. I say this because I vividly remember watching the game as it happened. If u can't admit the jazz got screwed and be honest about what happened then you're a liar and I have nothing more to say. And go back and watch the whole series. Every game was called for the bulls. Why? Because everyone knew the jazz were better and MJ was probably retiring. So David stern thought if we can get him another ring maybe he'll stay. Because once MJ left the ratings plummeted. It's the only time in sports history the refs screwed a team time and time again out of a championship
See you're just not being honest about the jazz getting screwed. Did u see the bulls ever get screwed by any calls? And yes these are professional refs in the finals. They have to get every call right. The eisley one was very obvious to EVERYONE even Bob Costas. And u just keep making excuses and justifying why these bad calls are irrelevant. I gotta pretty good feeling if this all went the jazz way u wouldn't have the same feeling and excuses
"Dennis Rodman, doesn't prefer Utah. At least it's close to Vegas." - Bob Costas.

i love the newsreel-like feel that the NBA on NBC intros have
It's like a mini-documentary. The production value for the NBA on NBC was so so good.
NBA on NBC truly had the greatest intros! So dramatic!
The end of the Golden Age of the NBA.

NBC gave an offer for 2.5 billion dollars to the NBA to get the NBA TV rights again. Comcast now own NBC.
