  • Dino’s Tinker Shed, S3 Ep6, Budget Dual Sport Tire review.
In this episode, I will give you my opinion of the Shinko 705 front and rear tire that I have on my 2009 Suzuki DR650. These tires are known to be a budget friendly 70/30 dual sport tire, that many use and enjoy. My review is a bit on the lighter side as Karl comes over to visit and give his opinion on riding the same roads with his DR fitted with another brand of tire.
Overall if you primarily ride paved roads or hard pack dirt these may be a tire to consider, however my experience with them on logging roads and some mud proved less than confidence inspiring.
Stick around to the end to see if I would buy these again or choose a different tire for the riding I do.
As always, I have included time codes below so you can skip around.

Nice video Dino, I inherited the 705's on a DR I purchased and I thought they were decent tires on the road, but off road they didn't give me the grip that I wanted. I have been using the Shinko 244's and am very happy with them.

I find running a front tire that is a notch more aggressive towards the dirt side compared to the rear works well for a lot of situations. My buddy’s DR 650 has a 705 on the rear and a 244 on the front. I don’t think you should go much more towards the street side than a 244 on the front unless you are riding almost exclusively on the street.

Let me first applaud your bravery for going down the tire review rabbit hole.👏 I guess if you're doing mostly street and hard packed, darn near any tire would suffice. I prefer to have confidence in my front tire in loose/muddy stuff and have used the MT-21 for years on many different bikes. They're a popular choice for a reason but to each their own. Cheers to you and Carl!😃

LOL, oh I know what reviews can be like lol. I think if I did not have the free rear tire from Karl I would have gone another route, and many still swear by Shinko 705's, many of those I have great respect for. My experience thus far is not what I expected however as you said, to each there own.

I have the 705's on my V-Strom 1000 2nd Gen and I would agree with everything you said. The front tire has a distinct bounce for lack of a better word at low speeds however I find them very good on pavement regardless of the condition. I live and ride near the Muskoka area and even if a tire slips on broken and chip sealed pavement they hook right back up which I don't think a full road tire would. Gravel unless really hard packed is a different story. They don't inspire confidence at all. They perform well in hardpacked dirt well but I agree that they leave a lot to be desired on gravel roads

I'm currently running some aggressive Shinko 244's on my KLR. Once those wear out (which probably won't take long), my plan is to try some Shinko 700's. They seem a tad more aggressive than the 705's and have a different knobby pattern. P.S. Howdy from the other end of Lake Ontario - I'm in the Kingston area.

Just found your channel and I enjoy it. I plan to work my way through your videos over the next while. I ride a 2023 KLR650 and I had the dealer fit a set of Shinko 705s on it before I took delivery. I didn't like the looks of the stock tires, so off they went. Most of my riding here in the lower mainland of B.C. is hard surface, as in paved roads. I find them very good for that purpose. Before this KLR I had a 2009 model with the Kendas and I must say I like the Shinkos on the new bike better. As an older guy, in my early 70s, I generally stick to paved roads not being as adventurous as I was a few years ago. I have little or no experience with the new tires, so far, on loose surfaces. By the way, I bought the tires through Pete's Superbike in Quebec and an well pleased with that supplier. Tires were cheaper, even with shipping all the way across Canada, than tire stores in this area, or mail order anywhere else I looked at.

Thank you so much for your feedback and I am happy you find the content enjoyable. I am finding the Shinkos are starting to feel better as they break in a bit and for my next set I may look at their 244's.
Tires are such a personal thing as they all make the bike ride a bit different and each rider enjoys the feeling from them differently. It is great to hear others opinion on them and I think anyone looking at new tires should get as much info as they can about any brand before they make a choice.

Good to hear your perspective. I love shinkos, ride alot of similar roads to yourself. I only ever use the 705 rear, I use the e700 front. It is slightly chunkier. I get 22000KMS from a front and around 12000kms from the rear. Would definitely buy again. Wonder if it is just your front tyre is the issue? Mud is my only issue with this setup but I don't ride it to often and if plan to I stick on my knobblie motoz tyres. Cheers Dino!

For what it's worth, I have been quite happy with the Shinko 244's on my bikes - good on and off pavement and long wearing. Between the 3 bikes I have put them on, I've put about 6K probably 50/50 or maybe 60/40 P/U

Dino I have just fitted a 705 rear in a 130/90-17. It replaced a well worn out Pirelli Scorpion Trail 130/80-17. The Scopion Trail is a great tyre and its expensive. I went with the 705 size as it is 22mm larger diameter which gives it a little higher speed, saves about 400 rpm @ 100km/hr and should get some more range out of the fuel without changing sprocket sizes. I have a new 705 90/90-21 front but have not fitted it yet as the front Scorpion Trail has plenty of tread left in it With balancing tyres, I use ABC balancing beads. They are a very hard ceramic 2mm bead that you put inside the tube through the valve stem with the schrader valve out. Without rim locks you need 1to 2 oz in the front and 2 to 3 oz in the rear. They can also be re-used. You dont have any problems with loosing balance weights. There are some cheaper glass balance bead opyions available but they are not as hard as the ABC ceramic ones. The ABC beads will cost about $15 AUD for front and back. Glad you found your dash mount template. Looking forward to it 👍

Hello Dino. I have ran two sets of 705 tires. I was not very impressed with them either. Both sets i had the same repeditive roar. The whoo whoo whoo kind of sound that continually got worse with wear. I also had the same shimmy in the bars that got worse as they wore. As the tread wore they kind of cupped and the offset treads would cause the shimmy. I also had balancing issues. If i made long interstate runs the front would come out of balance. The back was better for me. It was good till the tread wore flat. I like the cheap price but i have gone to other tires. Great video and it is nice to hear others thoughts on things i have tried as well.

Huge fan of Shinko tires. I've gone through probably 15 sets (804/805, 705, 244, etc) already, they are the best bang for the buck, hands down. IMHO, the Heidenau K60s are too expensive for what they are, the front tire wears like iron and works great, but the rear squared off in no time and handling was impacted after. I've heard some good and bad about the 705, but I've had only good experiences with them. You might prefer the 244 if you want to do more gravel:
