how to free up that frozen end of your whisker pole:
    1) Drill a small hole (1/8" or so) in the end of the hook, in line with the pin.
    2) Use a rod or punch through the hole to hammer on the latch and move it.
    3) Remove whatever retains the latch, so you can remove it completely and clean up the hole.
    4) Read it some more poetry.
I'm guessing its galvanic corrosion that froze it up so its probably pretty snug in there. Hammering it directly is probably the only way it'll budge.

      Spot on.👍
I’d just add that once it’s moved a little, tap it back in the closed direction occasionally and keep adding a drop of thin lube as it moves further. Diesel fuel works as well as any other penetrant and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper.
It may be worth standing it in a small container of fuel for a day or two before you try freeing it.
The one other thing that can help is heat, a blowtorch is ideal but a minute over a stove burner works fine too.
Good luck with it, been there, fought that, they usually give up with perseverance and you’ve got that in buckets!

Rib injuries are a bugger, cracked one of mine in a similarly silly manner, a loud bang followed by three months of pain. I hope you have it behind you. If you were hurting for that long you must have cracked at least one rib. Yep, you need to stop and rest to heal quicker, but there are things you need to do and most of them hurt which in turn delays healing. But don’t worry, 10 more years you can buy an AI crew member 😂

  • @terrulian
    @terrulian Рік тому +1

You're so likable, Holly! I was in Vanuatu a little over 20 years ago, on the way to a 27-month doublehanded circumnavigation, so much of what you show is nostalgic. I would NOT have the guts to singlehand, for the reasons that you mention about illness and injury. Dengue fever and malaria can put you seriously down, and my buddy actually got dengue fever in Bora Bora, during which time although normally 200%, he was useless. We were lucky, as it happened in a harbor so we could hang. But that business with the rib, you're a tough one. The worst injuries we had were a couple of broken toes.
As to complaining, bring it on. When I got back it would have been not only false, but disrespectful to the sea, to claim it was all a blast. It WAS a blast, one of the very few great adventures left for the commoner, don't get me wrong, but man, you gotta come back with some stories of terror and tragedy and narrow escapes and challenges overcome! No one wants to hear "yeah, that was a nice sail." They want to hear that you faced some really unpleasant stuff, and it puts their day-to-day worries in perspective. "What would I do if I were alone at sea and got sick like Holly? Cry?"
I love the little rigging stuff. Solving problems like this was one of the great pleasures of the voyage, since when you figure something out for which there is no instruction book, you're a genius! I love that you read poetry to the pole to solve its problem. You're a bit more advanced than I am, obviously. We had a similar arrangement with whisker poles, but we had two, and they were rigged for easy dousing. The double headsail thing is popular in the singlehanded transpac race. You can sail from about 120 on one tack to 120 on the other without jibing or changing a thing except the windvane. But you're almost through the Pacific now, which is when it is most useful. I agree about lines led aft, although many great sailors prefer it. Too much clutter all over the place and if you think that's going to make it unnecessary to go forward, I'm afraid you're dreaming.
Good on you, I'll be following along. Fair winds.😊

Much respect. I can only imagine getting sick aboard your boat and having to do everything yourself.

Thanks for being you and for sharing . . . one of the _only_ sailing channels I genuinely look forward to seeing content from. I'm a solo sailor as well - I'm not living full-time on the waves yet, I still have a few duties and responsibilities to tend to on land . . . but in a few more years I'll be living on me boat and noodling about.

I like your comment about how the old-timers got by with only cordage and wood, but it's important to note that most of them sank because of shipworms, fire, or the limitations of weather forecasting and navigation at the time. I guess the fact that most sailing back then was driven by commercial or military pressure for them, also... "get-there-itis" has sent many vessels to the bottom.

I had to free up that same pin on my pole. some repeated PB Blaster and then a big hammer and drift and solid hammering worked.. Good luck. Also I have lubed it wit a no oxide grease.

Oh goodie, another ep of Wind Hippie Sailing. I'll be watching this ep while sailing west across the north coast of Sumba Indonesia, wind straight behind me with a beautiful goose wing. moving at 5kts with calm seas

The faster you go, the shorter the ride. So goes my signature on the Battle Scooters forum on ADV Rider.
