I'm sorry to hear that brother.. Maybe incline presses will be better and if you drop the weight on the flat bench just do 10's or the 30 reps of 225 challenge to keep your strength. Every now and then hit a rep of 275 and 315 if you can ten go back down to the 225, 205, 185, 155, and 135..

Lethel, in my early 40s l could still do 2 sets of 10 with 305lbs. I'm not that guy anymore. I'm 64 and right now, l'm doing 3 to 5 reps with 225lbs. If l take my time then l can do 7 to 10 reps like l have done the last 2 years. That's my standard now. Know your body and respect your age.

Flat bench has always irritated my shoulders, until one day before I retired I was looking at a video of Eric spoto, one of the world’s strongest benchers 700 club, his style was stopping 2/3 inches off the chest, so I decided i would start back benching using that style keeping my elbows in a square, because my favorite exercise is deadlifting, spoto press ur arms should look like a perfect L, not going below that which will start irritating anyone with long arms like myself, this style helped me to press 410lbs at 230lbs at 58yrs old , but long as I remember not to break that form my shoulders are fine, but sometimes the old habit will come back hitting my chest to get extra reps, after a few times doing this my shoulders will start hurting again. They named his style spoto press , give it a shot, I’ve learned my chest has more definition because the tension is on the muscle until lockout.

I tore a rotator cuff, labrum and frayed bicep tendon in my right shoulder. I couldn't lift even 5 pounds anymore with my right arm so I had surgery to repair my tears. Since my surgery, I have done a lot of PT and have complete range of motion again, but I now also have severe pain that will probably never fully go away. I don 't take anything stronger than an occasional over the counter pain killer. I understand your reluctance for surgery. It may leave you - like me - with greater pain afterwards. You are a very physically strong man. I hope you will find ways to work around your shoulder injury to stay in shape.

Dumbbell presses are healthier on joints and actually work more muscles.

I'm fit over 50... i don't lift 400lb bench, BUT I'm pretty strong... lol... Try natural anti inflammatory sups like black seed oil. Works for me!

Another thing man, I had shoulder pain once, and it turned out it wasn't my shoulder. It was my upper Bicep attachments in my shoulder. When I stretched my bicep out over a few weeks, it went away. Hope this helps Sir!

Have you ever tried a Swiss bar? It’s much better for your shoulders. It changes the movement pattern of a usual bench press and relieves tension on the shoulders.

I had rotory cuff surgery about 12 years ago and I did recover. I slowly got to the point were I was again training heavy again. In the surgery I had a torn rotary cuff and bone spurs. it took a while to recover from the surgery. I am now 60. About 4 months ago it just got the point I got tired of worrying I was going to have muscle tears and injuries. I took a little time off and decided enough was enough and I needed a big change. I decided to go from doing 6 to 8 reps to 20 plus reps. I still feel I need to take most of my post warm up sets to failure. I just got tired of going so heavy and felt I was doing nothing more than having occasional injuries, missing workouts etc. I will admit its not a easy as it sounds. Certain movements are really hard to get to 20 reps or beyond to hit failure. But I feel its worth it. I would suggest give this a try. Lets say you were doing 275 on the bench press for 6 reps. I would start out with maybe 205 or less but you must get those 20 reps and if you get 20 keep going. I have found doing 20 rep sets is much much easier on my joints and tendons.

Greetings from England. Can you still do standing or seated barbell ohp? They are great to keep good strength levels, even if they don't work the chest much, like the bench.

Hi Lethel, worth trying some cable tower presses, there's a lot of variety and it's constant tension, standing presses against wall or kitchen work top, door frames, even bands, im in my late 50s and cant lift what I used to, best wishes to yourself, loved ones and fellow viewers.

I was worried about you doing those heavy benches without support. You are more likely to have injured your shoulder. Trying to wrestle the weight off you.
You should always have stops or a power rack..

My work arounds for a similar problem was: at first when very agrevated shoulder, one arm standing flies wit a cable. Had to do minute adjustments to angles od position to find a path for pain free movement. When a got better I started to do very controlled use of chest press machines. With shoulder blades contacted back and down I have been able to train chest pain free ever since. Good luck in finding you work around Lethal. Kind regards, Robin from Norway

Hey Lethal, i did alot of things to try to fix my shoulder problems from years of too much bench pressing , what I found that fixed them once and for all was on the pull up bar , the 3 different hangs ,Dead hang Active hang Arch hang ,progress through those 3 hangs and all shoulder issues where gone. had every shoulder issue you name it ,unstable clicking shoulders, pain in front and side that was always agravated by bench pressing. Weak and torn rotator cuff and mobility issues.
Layed of benchpress for a few months
    Replaced with the above exercises
Plus lots of neutral grip lat pull downs with chest out
Dumbell high pulls with rotation ,to strengthen rotator for stability
Than gradually added back medium weight dumbell presses as found where better on the shoulders than the bar.
Below are the vids that solved the issues

Sounds like you don’t need to risk surgery. Stay away from over the counter drugs and surgeries. Enjoy what you have. You don’t have much longer on earth..do the math
