- Emperor Caligula
At the end of March 37 AD, a solemn procession of soldiers walked along the Via Appia from Naples towards Rome. The gloomy Emperor Tiberius horror reign was finally over. The Roman Empire had received a new emperor in Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, who was descendant of the founder of the empire in a straight descent - his grandmother had been Emperor Augustus' daughter. The road was lined with crowds who enthusiastically shouted "our star", "our doll" and "our darling" to the 24-year-old ruler. Gaius was already a celebrity in his time. As a two-year-old, he had been given the nicknamed Caligula, "the little boot", by the soldiers whom his father Germanicus had commanded. Now everyone was hoping for a new golden age.
On this channel we focus on Roman History and right now we're doing a video on every Roman Emperor, if you're interested in that subscribe or watch the playlist here:

I wanted to ask, if you are doing all of the roman emperors, will you cover emperors like Arcadius and Zeno?
I want to go all the way to Constatine XI - in chronological order. So yeah Zeno and Arcadius will definitely be covered, eventually ;)
I'm not really looking forward to the third century tho that will be a mess...lack of reliable sources and the quick succession between the emperors oof
@@TheSPQRHistorian Well if you need any help when it comes to the Late Roman And Eastern Roman Empire don't hesitate to ask. I actually did my BA dissertation on Diocletian and the Third century so I can help there too.
Awesome, I really appreciate that, I'm sure I will need some help there - Perhaps we could do something together when I get to the 285AD mark? :o
@@TheSPQRHistorian Indeed, it would be a pleasure. I can even help you with the third century crisis because I was asking why Diocletian was able to bring it to an end which naturally meant I had to look at why his predecessors had failed to do so and what they had done to allow Diocletian to eventually succeed.
just send me an email when your ready.
Another great video
I really like how you do your videos. Thank you!
Really good videos bro
The artwork in this this video is fantastic! A lot of it I've never seen before. 😁
I just found your channel, thanks for making these, it's awesome!
I am entertained by this
Damn, they were so close to restoring the republic
Man ancient history is so scuffed
Not mad, just paranoid. You would be too if you had experienced the kind of childhood that he had.

I used to despise Caligula, and I still consider him one of the worst monsters of History, but he was a monster that was partly created by others. Also learning about other Romans has given me perspective. Lets face it the guy was destroyed by the calumny of Rome as a child, most likely molested by Tiberius, it's not like he was stable to begin with. Then throw in the fact that he suffered some kind of sickness that almost killed him, but most surely cause some CTE like brain damage. The episode in Britain is obviously Caligula mocking all the things Romans value. Victory was their most valued thing in life. So what did he do? He mocked their desire for it, had them go get seashells and come back home to a Triumph. His motive is pretty clear, he hated Rome. Thats why he insulted everyone. Thats why he attacked everyone, and by mocking the soldiers in the British campaign he signed his death warrant. He showed he was mocking Roman values as a whole.
Modern medical historians think he had meningitis which seriously disturbed the chemical balance in the brain
Before I thought he was stark raving mad as he's always been described but after spending a lot of time on the internet, I've come to see him more as a cynical troll than anything (maybe that is madness still, Idk). A lot of his actions like threatening to make his horse a consul, declaring war on the sea and collecting shells as "plunder" feel to me like the actions of someone who is flat out mocking the people around him and this is his way of flipping them the bird.
U
People misunderstood Caligula because of his enemies propaganda. He was not mad he was just disliked by the senate while the common people continue to love him until the day he died. The common people love Caligula so much that when they heard of his murder they were outrage at those conspirators and demanded that they be bought to justice and demanded a succession of Caligula by his own bloodline.
The common people did not like Caligula, or at the very least we have no idea how they perceived him. He was popular for the first few months of his reign, however there is no information on his popularity after he fell ill.
No they didn’t like him
At his death
@@epicnate6277 the common people and the army did love Caligula it was the senate that hated him. If the common people hate him why do you think they were angry at his murder? why do you think the people demand a successor to Caligula even though the senate planned on restoring the Empire to the republic? It's because they love Caligula so much that they placed Claudius as an emperor.
@@davidbrown4271 nope they did like him the senate hated him not the common people and the army.

Emperors and their lineage are very dull topics of SPQR. How about the great minds like Cicero, or the great warrior stories, like the assassin who thrust his hand in fire to prove his hatred of Rome's last king. Tell the dark stories, tell the brutal stories, or explain how Roman ideas impact current countries.
Thanks for the feedback! I actually wrote my bachelor on Brutus and the deposition of Tarquinius. And I was planning on doing a video series on our surviving literary sources like Tacitus, Cassius Dio, Suetonius, Livy etc; going into depth on who they were and what we need to keep in mind when we cite their works - I think that could be interesting
@@TheSPQRHistorian we are still waiting about your historiography 😅
Emperors are where it's at
I agree about videos on Cicero and other Roman writers, but the emperors are anything but dull since they made ancient Rome what it was. 🙂
