  • This week I took my first trip up north in my new (to me) vintage truck camper. But, what seemed like a successful first trip turned scary and we had to leave before night fell.

    I personally think you were smart to leave. Even though he may have meant no harm there is always that "what if". I am a 63 year old man who also has a truck camper and even though I wouldn't hurt a fly I always wait for others to approach me. I never invade others space. And I I never show all my cards. You did the right thing.

      I am a 67 year old woman and I would NEVER, EVER drive into another person's site ... maybe if I was hurt and needed help ... but still more likely to stop outside the site and yell for help. I think your instincts/intuition were appropriate. I do get that the aftermath would be disconcerting: combination of adrenalin, disappointment, anxiety and ??? Bob Wells (CheapRVLiving) recently posted a video on Intuition. He cites that there is scientific backup for how all of our senses and brain and entire body receive input and give us messages as well as what I call that "little voice" that gives direction as well as the "fight or flight" response.

      Definitely the right choice. His intention may well have been good but as a male I would definitely know that approaching a woman who is travelling alone is a weird thing to do and would definitely make her feel uncomfortable. I would definitely steer clear unless I was asked for help.

      I absolutely agree. Leave with haste. Every time I see one of our vanlife family (especially women) out minding their business, and a man comes along and starts looking for his dog. Time to leave. Reminds me of, "The Hills Have Eyes" movie. Hillbilly territory.

    If you for some reason decide to get another dog friend for Tara, get a German Shepherd. They are super sweet dogs (always some exceptions), playful, smart, and protective. They intimidate a lot of people just by their presence.
    You were smart to follow your instincts. If the dude was deer hunting, dusk should have been the time he was on his feet, not in his truck.

    Got to stay safe. He’s probably been watching your site for as long as you’ve been there. That’s good that you left your site, that guy seemed like a creep. The fact that he said he was looking for deer which means he had a loaded weapon in his truck.

    Hi..u made the right choice by leaving that spot. The interaction was weird and I immediately thought yeah I’d leave too. That was a beautiful spot no worries ,U will have more of those now that u can get into the back country with that truck. Safety first the fact that he came by 3x he noticed u. He blocked you in your camp spot. I’m so glad u moved. Your video was great. People that comment about being positive all the time ,that isn’t real,we all have ups and downs. It’s life and you are sharing part of your world with us so ty appreciate you and Terra 🌻✌️

    You never go wrong by reducing risk. I'm an older guy too, like some others have commented I'd never just roll into someones camp like that. I mean its just rude at best. Not that there cannot be good reasons, but he didn't give any good reason. Even in my years in Wilderness SAR when I needed to approach a camp to ask if the campers had seen a missing person, I'd announce myself at a little distance first. It's just a simple matter of politeness and respecting people's need for a bit of space around them.

    You did the right thing Alex. From the second he drove up I was uneasy and personally I would have been scared in that situation. This is the main reason I'm so afraid to go out alone without my husband or a friend. I think whenever a situation like that happens, which I hope it never happens again to you, I'd get their faces on video if you can. You just never know. The world we live in now is just crazy and so unpredictable and quite honestly so are a lot of the people. I wish it wasn't that way because there are so many things that I want to do and I'm scared to do because I would need to do them by myself. I can work remotely but unfortunately my husband can't and only gets so much time for vacation per year. I love your videos and your attitude with life and everything you experience. I do have to say that when I am out I do carry a weapon. I have a concealed carry in the state that I live and it is recognized in certain States. For those states that it's not I know there is a federal law that somewhat protects you. In my eyes I'd rather be safe and feel safe and if the event ever arises I would need to use that to protect myself I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Just my opinion but I think it's awful we just can't respect each other's privacy and space. You 100% did the right thing. I hope you're feeling better and those feelings have gone away and you are enjoying yourself again! Stay safe girl!

    • @brucehalleran1149
      @brucehalleran1149 Рік тому +3

      There is an organization, USConcealed Carry Association that offers training on how to safely and legally handle possible armed situations. They might offer you some peace of mind, and better odds if you are "judged by twelve". Might also improve the odds of the big scary guy with the beard (me) not being "carried by six".

    I work alone in the woods. It can be unnerving when people come into my camp. I am more worried about theft than personal safety . Been robbed multiple times
    It really sucks you have to worry about things like that.
    If I did see someone camped near me I might stop in just to let them know I am nearby, so hopefully he was just trying to be neighbourly.

    Embracing solitude requires a special bond with loneliness, not being alone. Becoming a hermit on the other hand is pretty much a dream, a small cabin in the woods, maybe four Mastiffs and a gun... Yeah! Anytime. And to get to know the outside world once in a while. Where do I sign in? In Spanish we have a saying: " Don't search for the cat's fifth leg". Good call for leaving. Stay safe and well. ¡¡Pura Vida!!.... And those frozen patterns on the truck..... 7 years full time here preferring way off grid traveling and living. Respect the vibe. You did good. Don't let it spoil your journey. ❤ Even men, per a solo fellow that I know, have had issues with fear of being robbed, etc. in the same situation. Yes, not being able to be your trusting self is so sad but so true.

    You need to install a Chy Knees diesel heater. I thought part of being Nomadic was South for the winter, North for the Summer? For sure, learning outdoor extreme condition survival skills and self sufficientcy with the bare basics is always great skills to have.

    Is there a way to get from your camper to the drivers seat of your truck, without stepping foot outside? It would be frightening if someone knocked on your door in the night. Stay positive. Stay safe.
