Did you know that 24% of fatal accidents occur during the takeoff and climbout phase of flight? It is a critical period for all pilots. If you experience an engine failure during takeoff, and have runway remaining in front of you, this video shows you what to do.

I taught that emergency a lot. The 50 Feet RTO. Nose down, power down..land.. Cutting the throttle is second nature. Cut flaps, cut mixture too. Dont forget to cut the mixture and cut the flaps. Dont get used to try to brake hard with flaps and engine pulling you forward from idle power. That way you avoid braking with flaps and engine idle power on. Most engine fails are at full power setting. The partial power kind. Air cooled engines fail 40 times more than liquid cooled ones, like on cars. Go to the grass to stop sooner if needed.

Very good demo sir. Very important maneuver not taught by most cfi's because "it is difficult", LOL. I used to teach those take off emergencies when cfi in the 1990's. I was the cfi that taught the other commentator below named 5feetgoaround40flaps.. I used a 4, 800 runway. I called them, 50 feet RTO for the partial power down. or 50 feet engine cut for the total cut.
2 of my former students had to do them as far as i know. One after a door opened at 30 feet agl after rotation, another after they hit a goose with a wing on rotation, which made a huge dent on it and huge noise he said. Both landed and stopped by cutting the mixture as taught.

Worst time to lose the engine. Most fatal time too. Good video. Thanks..

Great refresher course that I'm going to ask my CFII to do before I enter the clouds during my IFR training soon or on my BFR because as any pilot who doesn't fly a lot needs to stay on top of his or hers Emergency Engine failure procedures in any aircraft that we fly for a living or just for fun is to know in case this happens and when it does just fly the airplane

Just one question though. If you could briefly tell me how u have set up ur sound recording. It’s crystal clear!

We use a couple of different methods depending on the video. In this case, we used an audio cable from GoPro that has the correct impedance to record audio from the airplane's intercom.

Why power off after engine failure?

    • @GoldSealFlight

It could be a partial-power failure and you have to land. Ideally, pull out mixture and fuel to off as well, but probably not enough time for that unless you've really practiced this.

Got the idea too that in any engine off problem, whether on takeoff or while flying and then on landing you want power (throttle) off, because it would be very bad if you plan the landing and it suddenly came to life again.
