  • There remains a huge amount of stigma around depression, but if we look at what an average human is up against, feelings of depression are entirely normal, indeed, to be expected. We don’t need to compound our misery through a sense that it’s either unusual or unwarranted. I

    “We’re not talking about the extreme, most paralysing, regions of despair - where external medical help is vital. Our target is rather the times when we feel - as indicated by Henry David Thoreau’s phrase - mired in moods of ‘quiet desperation’: a large, grey hinterland in which beneath an outward surface of endurance, we feel exhausted, close to tears, beyond the sympathetic understanding of others, easily irritated and daunted by the simplest tasks...”

    When people say that there are others who have it worse than you, do they expect you to suddenly decide never to feel bad about something ever again?

      @@076657 Everything is maintained by thinking about it. Why can you remember a name of a stranger better after the 5th than after the first time? Because the connections between your neurons are strenghend each time you think about something, so that the more you think about a thing, lets say you see a face and think "Thats James!" The more likely the neurons that remeber the face and the neurons that remember "thats randy!" are to fire at the same time, connecting it more and more. The more often you think about being sad the more often you will think about sadness while thinking about or remembering your feelings.

They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scared from the past,they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. An old class mate from my old School committed suicide Last week. He suffered from severe depression, but none of us knew,not even his closest friend. The thing is, we all are so occupied with work and studies that we lose sight from the really important things and people. I too am guilty of this. In our chat group we many of us shared that they suffer or have suffered from depression and consult a coach/therapist. It was unbelievable how many people from my old class suffered or suffers from depression. Every single person in our class was so full of life, soul, energy, humanity and many were so outgoing. That was the moment I realized: It's not you, me, us who is flawed. It is this world, the system we are living in. A system build by and for soulless sociopaths. It is NO wonder, so many people are suffering from depression. In fact, it is a sign of being a sensitive, sain, intelligent human. It is a sign of not having lost the humanity. After the death of my old class mate, this is one thing that me and my class mates learned.

I'm in tears right now, it just doesn't seem fair. I've now learned people have their own battles, even if they seem pretty good from the outside. I just need to let it out... I really miss laughing with our group of friends, all his jokes, his nonsense lines. And the worst part is, I won't be laughing like that ever again.

      @SuperDubois (albeit an old thread), I agree with you precisely about the world/system being flawed. It's hard to believe this was the Creator's divine plan but that's not for us to fathom. We are mere pawns on the chess board of life, each generation trying to make sense of an increasingly disconnected, troubled world. For me rapid technological advancements are squarely to blame, despite it's presumed utility in making our lives "better." Clearly it has not. What are we to do with the hunter-gatherer instinct still present in our DNA? Are we gathering FB "likes" and substituting that as a means to fulfill our days and destinies? No wonder we're all depressed... here is a quote I came across recently that sums it up well: "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society." - Jiddu Krishnamurti

      Hector Sanchez I don't think so. A depressed person feels small when is seeing how successful the others are. But when you're not depressed you don't need someone to drown you with them. We're not meant to be other's peoples psychologists.

    • @Sdhector21
      @Sdhector21 7 років тому +100

      Claudia Arizmendi But consider the following. People who are not clinically depressed, but are trying to evaluate how well they are doing in life, could turn to social media for a benchmark. If this benchmark wasn't biased, showing only how well people are doing but also how bad, would the average person feel better about themselves?

    • @claudiaarizmendiaguilera7951
      @claudiaarizmendiaguilera7951 7 років тому +10

      I'm afraid I'll have to repeat my point: we aren't pshycologists. And besides there's such a whole concept of "how well they're doing in life" (bc it's relative) i think the only thing we can do is keep in mind that people tend to show the great things in social media. (Even tough i know a few people that don't give a fuck and post their 36 moods in a day, haha)

      Hector Sanchez fuck Facebook

    • @StermaPerma
      @StermaPerma 7 років тому +64

      Claudia Arizmendi I refuse to just let that idea of fake happiness conquer. The populus now loves following ideologies instead of actual humans. This is why the fakest and most flamboyant, delirious people get the most likes and shares on social media, and when they occasionally do show a less proudful side of theirs, it's something they've specifically picked out because they know it will never be over the line or cause stigma.
      Sure, we're not psychologists but noone says we have to be. But these social media messages about happiness always winning and constant neglection of pain.. they get to people. And when kids and teens and later adults see that everyone of their friends and idols is doing better than them because they're able to ignore depression and down times, they start to think something's wrong with them. So if it wasn't so wrongly portrayed that showing your bad side, your faults, is a bad influence and a weakness, then people wouldn't need to act like psychologists. They'd just see it as an everyday post.

    I once tried to hint to my friends that I suffer from depression because I wanted them to understand why I am the person that I am. I most likely won't ever do it again because of the amount of judgment or awkwardness I could see they were feeling. That also makes me feel depressed--that people would rather see me as some bitter person who hates everything, rather than a person who's hurting inside.

    • @NINAAAHxD
      @NINAAAHxD 7 років тому +5

      They do come from families like that--I do too. I just don't understand how people could sympathize or feel compassion for things they see in movies, show, social media, etc. but in real life, they find it hard to react to someone they presume to care about. It's not that I want them to feel bad for me, but it's hard for me to be happy when they're trying to do something fun. Because of that, people just seem to give up on including me in most things and it's this endless cycle of me not being happy. I think it hurts more when people ignore serious things like this, instead of acknowledging it.

      Many people can't grasp the concept of depression. I have heard it a lot of times that it's all in my head. While there is some truth to that , I expected a more compassionate reaction from the people around me especially my family . But I realize now that it's not their fault they don't understand, they are a product of an environment where they learnt to bottle up their feelings and ignore them . In most societies crying , lamenting and mourning are viewed in a negative light. You are just expected to be alright all the time and be happy. But depression makes you realize that meaningful happiness and fulfillment only comes from working for them. And it's our job to create meaning in our lives in order to be satisfied with our lives. You need to be your own best friend and understand that no one is coming to save you. You are the superhero of your story . And like most of them you have to conquer life on your own. And, believe me you are more than enough to do so.

    • @076657
      @076657 5 років тому +1

      I agree. I don't feel any judgement, people generally want to help. But they can't help you, you are the one able to pull yourse;f out.
      My thought process is: no one can pull me out of my depression, I am the one to make a decision and be active and pull myself out.
      So, I don't want to waste people's time saying how depressed I am, if I am not taking the steps to get out. It's also boring to people, we all have dark moments and the point of meeting a friend and talking is to cheer each other up.

    People always tell you when you're sad that it's normal to feel that way, that feeling like a failure or not being able to bring yourself to laugh at jokes makes us somehow 'human'. And every time I hear that it just makes everything worse. Because from where I'm standing, 'you're normal' and 'everyone goes through tough times' just simply means:
    'You can't be helped. You have to just suffer through it
    like everyone else.'
    When I feel sad, when something has gone wrong and I don't want to get up from my bed I don't want to hear that it's normal or that it makes me human. I don't want to hear how my neighbours are stressed too, I don't care if every other teenager is depressed and that it's perfectly fine. I just want it to go away.

      There is a distinction between what you should believe, and what is real.
      Reality : Everyone suffers. Suffering is the reason humans have evolved to this degree. It is a natural part of life.
      What you should believe : You can escape your suffering, you create your own traps, your mind is influenced by things out of your control, things might get better, you should keep working on destroying your existence.
      Reality : Statistically most people die a painful death. Or they die from debilitating diseases that leaves them utterly humiliated. Funding for prevention of such diseases are abysmally low, and awareness is minimal.
      What you should believe : You don't need to worry about death, it is a natural part of life, just enjoy what you have now.
      I am not asking you to conveniently brainwash yourself. But instead, to just be, and not expect things out of your "self" which in fact does not exist.

One way psychiatrist diagnose for depression is by telling or making jokes, and if their patients don't even smile a little bit, it adds to the odds of being clinical depression. Same for not leaving bed. Or so I heard from a med student. You should get medical help. Talk to someone you trust and ask them to help you go through this.

      Depression is Solvable by adding a spiritual practice in life.
      First we have to understand who we actually are?
      Student:What is the difference between a living body and a dead body?
      Professor: The heart pumping
      Student: Yes but what makes the heart pump? The living body has all the organs in place, and the dead body has all the organs in place, what is the missing part, what is missing that makes the body dead?
      Professor: hmm
      Student: The missing part is the SOUL, when the soul is present the body is alive, when the soul leaves the body, the body is dead.
      - So this is who we are: Indivudal Spirit Soul, yet, we are currently imprisoned in a material body, so as long as we try to satisfy the material body and neglect the spirit soul, we will never be satisfied, because we are trying to satisfy something which we are not. So our whole life we have been living in an illusion.

      This is how I see it too.
      More and more people started demanding love and attention from others instead of giving it and waiting for it to be returned, they end up bitter when they don't recieve it and stop giving likes to others out of spite.
      This is a downwards spiral that is happening everywhere, facebook just makes it really obvious.

    I feel like it is so incredibly important to not let these depressive feelings become anger and hate. I really do believe a lot of the suffering in this world comes from people who turned their own sadness into anger and revengeful thoughts, and then acted upon those thoughts only to bring more suffering. I try to understand the minds of murderers, terrorists and so on, and I do think in many situations if only they had personal support before they committed their crime it could've been prevented. I wonder how as a society can you make sure less people are alone, that people early on learn to respect each other and to how to deal with grief and the importance of supporting others.

You're all good man. Pessimism/nihilism are completely rational trains of thought, and may seem depressing to most, but if you embrace it. It isn't so bad. You have probably experienced a side of things that others can't see, and to deny that is to try to be someone your not. I'm not saying you should be okay with being depressed, but you should embrace your uniqueness, and find others who think the same way you do. They're everywhere, and lot's of them do a lot of cool things.

    1. This is a monumental lesson! It is incredibly powerful, beautiful, wise and consoling! Thank you so much. The good news is that if we don't shy away from all these truths, we can be quite cheerful people indeed. Because it is such a relief to accept that life is basically all about suffering. Knowing that this is the norm, you value every moment of your life now, where most of your beloved ones are still alive. And these are still the days prior to your days with a deadly cancer. So you don't take anything you have at this very moment for granted!
    The fact that life can be so horrifying and miserable makes you attentive to the smallest details where you can recognise beauty and kindness and it makes you a very grateful person.
    2. Because Alain recommended that movie on a podcast, last night I watched " Lilia 4ever". It is incredibly sad and very hard to watch but we all must see it.
    Life is depressing for all of us for many reasons. But it is also very important to be well aware of all the priviliges we have been given already when we were born. Like having a home, the chance to go to school, having something to eat. And most importantly, having at least ONE person in your life, a sister, a friend, a teacher , who loves you and believes in you. So many people don't have any of it. It would certainly give our lives a " meaning" to try to do something about this and to reduce their pain. I like this quote a lot:
    " If you feel helpless, help someone".
    And if we can give a "meaning" to our lives this way, this is what happens:
    "He who has a "why" to live can bear with almost any "how".
    Nietzsche
    3. One thing in that movie that really got to me was what the little boy said towards the end, to stop Lilia from committing suicide:
    " You remain dead for all eternity , but you're alive only for a brief moment."
    ( And we don't have to end our lives, to end "the kind of life" we are living. )
    4. All we need is compassion, curiosity and resilience.
    - In order to cultivate compassion, we can look for the signs of our own suffering in others. We can read good books, watch movies, listen to the people properly and really THINK about it all.
    - To remain curious we can start wit ourselves, observing everything about ourselves with curiosity rather than with judgement: all our dreams and ambitions but also our fears and insecurities. If we practise curiosity with ourselves first, then we can look at the entire world that way too.
    - For resilience Boris Cyrulnik's books are very helpful.
    Both of his parents were killed in concentration camps and he himself was almost caught by the Nazi's when he was 6 years old. Then he not only survived this tragedy, but became the most famous and beloved psychiatrist in the field of " resilience" in France!
    5. For friends who are suffering from clinical depression, here is a little list that could be helpful:
    - There is an episode of the wonderful podcast " On Being with Krista Tippett" dedicated to this subject. Just search for " On Being, The Soul in Depression".
    - Andrew Solomon's TED Talks are excellent. He himself suffered form depression for years. And he has a book called " The Noonday Demon, An Atlas of Depression".
    - One of the best psychology podcasts is " Shrink Rap Radio". There are several episodes dedicated to depression. ( Including one episode about "Depression and Nutrition" where they say that you must have your Vitamin D, B12 and Zink levels checked before you get a complete diagnosis. )
    Once again thank you so much for this wonderful lesson. Congratulations to the genius animator too!

By the way if you have so much personal integrity, may be you should know that if you ever want to teach something to someone, it doesn't take you very far when you start by HUMILIATING that person.

    I feel sadness (I won't say depressed because some people seem to think depression is impossible without diagnosis...) because I feel extremely rejected and abandoned. After leaving college a few years ago I quickly lost many of my most trusted online friends on Steam, my primary social platform. That hurt, but at least I was reunited with my parents for a while and could visit a couple of friends from college. But last year I had to move further away for a new job after being made redundant at my job, and now have no friends living nearby. Making things worse, my parents moved to Germany for my Dad's job so visiting them regularly is out of the question.
    Since I lost a large number of online friends, I mostly kept myself on lockdown as far as accepting friend requests goes, making my profile private and telling myself new friends were a mere liability, given how many times my trust had been broken and I had been surprised in the worst way possible. More recently, every time some random person friend requests me on Steam I get excited at the possiblity of meeting someone that can make me happy again, perhaps a selfish and ill-fated expectation granted, but I don't feel I have enough reliable friends anymore, and the very few I do have have poor availability due to timezone differences. In the end, the new friends just lead to more misery as I realise they understand me just as little as everyone else and the cracks and flaws in the personality of myself and the other person begin to show. Other friends I have only bother staying in contact if they want something from me such as art, a game map for an engine I've working in, trying to convince me to play a game I have no interest in when I already explained I don't even have the willpower to play the ones I used to enjoy anymore...
    The last time I had a LDR must be 4+ years ago, and real relationships? Forget it, I'm not the right kind of guy. In my lifetime I've had one opportunity for casual sex, and that's it. I dislike the culture in this country; in which people believe the only way to have a good time is to get so drunk you are oblivious to how shitty everything is at the expense of health. I get what you may be thinking - "you're an incel, you need to try online dating, you're one of those nice guys, you've started to hate the world because you feel like it owes you something for nothing and you need to grow a pair". Sure, I've heard those before. I'll counter each of those. 1. Yes I am an incel. 2. I tried online dating and met someone once, but it didn't really work out. I don't see it as worthwhile because I imagine coming across the same unrelatable people as those that tell me to get out to bars or whatever to meet random people. 3. You can call me a "nice guy" with entitlement issues in the most derogatory sense and you may be right, but I don't even want or care about the V. If I could even find a friend or two to hang out with in real life or 100x better still someone I could just hug, rather than spending my weekends and evenings all alone in my apartment, listening to dark ambient because it's the only damn music I find relatable (though I do stray on good days).
    4. My hatred for the culture of getting drunk and all that has always been a thing for me since I've seen the embarassing and sometimes dangerous things that happens with drunkenness, and with that among other reasons I avoid alcohol as much as possible. In college I was stuck with two girls of this typical attitude and fortunately (?) one other guy on an IT-related course that became a friend due to aligned opinions on drinking. These two girls ridiculed us for not being interested in the drinking culture, which to them I guess seemed like we were being anti-social since it's so common it's apparently expected from everyone. So I'm not just hating the culture because of entitlement.
    For anyone that's read this far, you probably think I'm completely unhinged by now for creating a text wall this monstrous in this comment section. That's understandable after reflecting back on what I've written. You may wonder why I posted this and used probably a quarter of its length to shut down most potential advice or criticism. I simply wanted to eliminate the possibility of obvious suggestions. I guess the real reason for this is catharsis. I've typed up numerous such comments before on UA-cam only to not post them, but this finally seemed like an appropriate place since others are explaining what brings them sadness or depression as well. If all you wish to do is throw insults, I can't stop you, but if you never justify yourself, it may be difficult to take you seriously.a
