The diagram for the C#m chord is incorrect. The 3rd string note should be on the 9th fret, not the 8th as is shown. Bryan is playing it correctly in the video - it's just the diagram.
My first lesson with Ted was at his parents' house, I think in Woodland Hills - a really nice place. And he didn't love his Chord Chemistry book. I think he preferred Modern Chord Chemistry, Vol 1. But whatever you were interested in, he'd find in his filing cabinet. Weird fact about Ted... he loved the Bee Gees, no kidding, he did. He would talk about random things that were unrelated to music. He was a true mentor of young people, more than just a guitar teacher. He was fond of Emily. He was a warm and caring person and that showed up in everything he did. Yup, he was a lot more than just a guitar teacher. I miss him... we all miss him.
Great first video! I was also a student of Ted’s. I only had a few lessons back in 1986 but I remember them very well. He was literally surrounded by books and albums in his small apartment. I believe I still have audio cassette tapes of those lessons somewhere. I should dig them out and see if they might be of value. He played these etudes that blew me away at the time. Before my first lesson, when I called him, I remember I almost had to beg him to take me on as he was so busy teaching at that time. He was a gifted man with an un-quenchable thirst for knowledge and the sharing of it. RIP Ted.
Great video! Really captures some of Ted's nuances. I was a student of Ted for over 10 years. I lived very close to him for four of those ten years and was his last student of the night. When I started taking from him he lived with his parents in Woodland Hills and then when they moved he moved into the apartments in Encino. I'd get there at 8:00 P.M. and often wouldn't leave until after 2:00 A.M. Ted is most likely the greatest musical genius that has ever lived so far. His knowledge of music was as vast as the Cosmos. Not only that but he was the kindest person I ever met.
Ted, Ted, Ted... the Master, the whale: you may not see him from the surface, but if you look below the vast musical ocean, Ted is HUGE!!!!! His Modern Chord Progressions book did more for me than anything else. I never got to meet him or speak to him, but boy do I love him. I always wanted to thank him. Got to correspond with Barbara after his passing, she was very sweet. Thanks for the vid Bryan, cheers!

Great video. I was searching for solo guitar players months ago and some people talk about Ted. He became one of my guitar heroes just in the moment when i listen his album for the first time. And the website that keeps his teachings alive, is a world of materials.
It is the first day of the rest of my life with a master musician/guitarist teacher Ted Greene...he sadly passed away in 2005..never heard of the man. His style is like coming home...wandering, searching and discovering a richness in musicality not many poses...the God of music has got him covered!!

Thanks for this; nice job. One aspect that blows me away was Ted's exploration/grasp of Baroque harmony. In some ways it's simple (his words, not mine), but it sounds just gorgeous when he plays it.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing. That Maj9 chord with 3rd in bass voicing you play is very much something one might hear in Eric Johnson’s playing. In fact this entire Debussy piece along with the harp harmonics is very reminiscent of a segue to “Cliffs of Dover” that EJ often does live, before he launches into the distorted intro.

Well done video. Being a fan of Ted Greene's books, teaching concepts, and his playing I was drawn toward your video immediately. Been working with his books since I first bought a copy of Chord Chemistry back around 1976 or 77. And I still have so much further to go!!! Good luck and congratulations with your channel. Just out of interest.... the Amajor 9/C# is an ambiguous chord. When I first learned this shape it opened up a plethora of possibilities worth exploring. For example take the shape barred at the 7th fret it can be seen as an Emin7b6 or a rootless Cmaj9. Move it down 1 fret and it can work as an Emaj13#11 - from low to high strings you have root on the open low E string, major7 on 5th string, P5 on 4th string, 6th or 13th on 3rd string, 9th on the 2nd string, and the #11 on the 1st string. There's a LOT more to explore, but I thought this might interest you enough to explore this more thoroughly on your own. From the shape you introduced I'll sometimes leave out the 1st string and use it as a min7#5 chord. Then explore other voicings (including rootless voicings on guitar with a bass playing the root). great video Bryan. my guitar teacher - Chris in Santa Barbara was taking lessons from Ted. I had no idea at the time who he actually was into. like saying Segovia and being clueless. LOL.. your explanations are great .
The thing about Le fille, don't forget that it's Debussy. Ted's arrangement had to fit that for the most part, and so many voicings were dictated by the function and indeed form of the harmony. On Fille, this introduced us ALL to some really spooky voicings. The oddest choice, to me was the Barre chord that Ted ends up sliding in PARALLEL everything up (not very 'Ted' like) a perfect fourth. just like that. Zoom. Bam; it's early in the tune. But Ted probably wouldn't have let his dogma for voice leading usurp the uncannyness of french impressionist music. So there it is: dictated by the design. The one takeaway from Ted, one of my leading guitar heroes, was that when he approached guitar, he was also exploring ALL types of music, and at that root lay common-practice - some would just say " everything from Bach until now" - music, and the basic harmonic backbone of music theory et al. He went there. Most guitarists I know were NEVER that self-disciplined and came to music theory generally on an as-needed basis. I see this because I, too started like Ted, on a more academic/classical route into music theory, and even on another instrument. I'm an amateur, and I know it, so I'm not trying to throw shade on great players who chide theory. That's not my place. But I find Ted's arrangements lay easily in the hands of someone who has already had a healthy dose of music theory. So chord inversions, as an easy example, aren't anything strange, for instance. Ted handles it properly, in general. Debussy, though, is something altogether different.

Funny yesterday I ended up composing a small thing and I recognize the A maj9/ C#, I came up with it myself when noodling the guitar .
