- At $4,769, this 1970 Newport convertible was more expensive than a Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda. You read that right. But its also very rare. Out of 181,000 Chrysler cars that year, only 1-in-82 was a convertible! And why don’t Imperial wheels fit this Newport? Watch and see!
What an amazing collection of stuff they’ve got there! Love those big ‘ol convertibles. Talk about a fun weekend cruiser.

My grandmother had a 75 Newport in baby blue with a navy blue vinyl top. I used to lay on the back dash and play with my hotwheels while she drove down I-95.

The full size cars of the late 60's and early 70's are huge. I had a 71 Olds 98. It was much the the same as this. Beautiful bodies made of steel. Fun cars to drive. Sadly they were not to last.
I bought a 70 Newport 2door vinyl top in the late 80s in beautiful New Brunswick(the province)....for 900 bux!!! Only had one respray and was originally a British Columbia car. 383 4 barrel....trailer towing package...9 ply springs....trans cooler. I traded it for a 86 5.0 Capri rs.....what was I thinking??

Yup, with the VIN, we win: C for Chrysler Newport, E for Economy price class, 27 for two door convertible, L for 383 V8 with two barrel, 0 for 1970 model year, C for Jefferson Ave, Detroit, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Jefferson plant that produced this car operated under Chrysler from 1925 to 1990 and then the "new" Jefferson plant opened in 1991 and this still operates under Stellantis today. Some vehicles were also produced at the Belvidere, IL plant which operated from 1965 and has been indefinitely closed as of February 2023. 1970 was the last year for the Newport convertible.
No tag, can't brag, but some of it can be figured out, no doubt: CE27 for Newport (C) Economy (E) convertible (27), E61 for 383 V8 with two barrel, possible D34 for automatic transmission, possible R6 for Crimson exterior paint, X9 for Black interior trim, V3X for Black convertible top, among other codes.
Yes, that's rare number and too bad someone didn't figure that out years back. My 1979 10th Anniversary Trans Am had a run of 7,500 cars (in theory one for every dealer), but only 1,817 of those were equipped with the Pontiac 400/4 speed manual transmission combination. The rest were 403 Oldsmobile equipped with a THM350 automatic. Mine is a 400 and was made on exact week in April 1979 in Norwood, OH, the same week GM dropped the 400 from the option list. After that, only cars in the schedule with a 400 were likely built. No, I would have bought a Pontiac GTO convertible with every option, if I had my way back then.

That yard sure has variety. I think this is my favorite youtube series. Seems like a dream job. Especially for someone who never throws anything car related (models, hot wheels, magazines, etc.) away.
Is that a Charger GLHS in the background at the end? That would be a good car to look at, even if it's a clone.
Unfortunately it's a clone, all Shelby Chargers had a unique, 2 headlight nose
In the 70's I bought and restored a 1970 300 convert and parts were non exhistant. I found a 70 300 2 dr hardtop for parts. A shame 'cause it was very nice shape. The engine went into a 69 Charger that I was also repairing. I drove it into the ground as a daily driver. It had factory air! Today I have a 67 300 convertible with the 440. Great cars, loved them both!

Loving the C body content mate. I have a 67 Newport custom Hardtop here in New Zealand. Theres only 3 or 4 in nz so parts are scarce.

Friend had a similar car and one night the cruise control stuck at full throttle. Was dark and we had no lights. Had to leave it in parking lot and taxi home. That 440 had a mind of its own

Wow - interesting that a Newport 'vert was more expensive than a hemicuda! Love the c-body reviews Steve - currently restoring a '68 300 convertible.
I guess that Thurston Howell the 3rd and Milburn Drysdale didn't want their bolt patterns to be the same as the commoners. I also remember a very big Chrysler Newport ad campaign from the early '60s where the base Newport was advertised at the price of $2964, not much more than a Ford Galaxie or Chevy Impala. Good job as always Steve.

Talk about a land yacht. The first car I ever stole (out of the back yard) and drove at 11 years old. They thought the car was dead but me and a friend proved them wrong. Got ratted out by a neighbor saying to my mom they saw it running up the road the day before. Memories.
Even though I was only 2 years old in 1970, as a young man, I definitely would've gone for the 'Cuda. Today, at 54 years old, while I still build and love my hot rods, I'd definitely go for the full size car. I'd probably go with the 2 door hardtop though.
Watching this video kinda makes me wonder if Mr. Norm over at Grand Spaulding Dodge ever worked his magic on one of these. A 440 with 3 deuces in a C-body would be an awesome ride!
The 1970 Sport Fury GT could be optioned with the 440 6 barrel.

If i was shopping for a new car in 70 my choices would be Chevelle SS conv 396 and cuda conv 383 or a roadrunner coupe 383 all manual shifts... nice family cars back in the day... my friends dad had a 68 or 69 roadrunner orange with black stripes ... coolest dad in grade school !!

Talked to a guy once that actually bought a new Hemi car around 1970, said it was a piece of crap and traded it in a 440. I was shocked of course! He went on to explain the situation, he was young, married, had a kid or two and used his car for daily transportation.
I think you didn’t even get a warranty with the hemi.
They could be temperamental, and they weren't for the faint of heart. The best bet was for someone that was a mechanic or mechanically inclined to own them. My coworkers neighbor bought one new and it was a family car for a time, but then it got put into the garage (and recently given to one of his kids) when they realized how rare it was.
@@googleusergp The guy actually was a decent enough mechanic leaned a lot from him. The street Hemi was just better suited to 1/4 mile trips. There's a reason you don't see high mileage Hemi cars, if they didn't blow up due to the cheaper construction than a race Hemi, they were just a pain in butt for a daily driver.

Oh those left hand lug nuts! I had a 70 Newport going to the Demos way back when. I'm out there twisting a 4 way like a candy cane, unaware of that. Old mechanic across the street comes over chuckling and fills me in.
In hindsight, weighing all the factors I'm personally going with the Hemi Cuda ragtop. Great review, as usual
I learned to drive in a 70' Newport four door. It was bare bones with crank windows and no AC. On the plus side it had a strong 383.

@@TheToolmanTim Between Steve's channel and the equally excellent Rare Classic Cars, I am often wandering down memory lane wondering how I would have equipped a new car in the classic era. The 2 barrel 383 ran or Regular gas and provided very adequate power so it probably would have been my choice for a Newport or any other large Chrylser. We had a Slant 6 '73 Duster when I was learning to drive so getting up to speed was more of a challenge than doing burn outs. 😁

Aahhhh ,here's the thing. In 1969 my dad would be buying the car, not me. I could strongly suggest the Hemi Cuda, but I don't think so. I could figure this because, in 1971 dad bought mom a New Yorker. And I remember a roadrunner, a Duster 340 and a yellow Cuda on the showroom floor that day. Dad still bought the New Yorker. Even though I was sitting in the roadrunner.

Very cool (and sad) to see a Newport convertible featured! I have the gold one featured on Lou's channel. A U-code Newport is an extremely rare find. I recently rescued a U-code Newport Custom 4dr sedan. To have a matching U-code Newport convertible would be my holy grail!

Bought a white Newport convertible back in '83 for $700 and then a 300 coupe parts car soon after for $175. Swapped over the hidden headlight front end and sold it a few months later for $1250. Broke even on the parts car with a guy who wanted it for the 440 big block. The good old days.

The 73 Imperial ( last year of fuselage styling) has the distinction of being the longest US production car ever, thanks to the 5 mph bumpers.

North of New England lies what was once New France. 😂 In 1970, my dad bought a 2 door Monaco 500 hardtop with a black vinyl top that made it look like a convertible. It was actually the front drum brake and hub with the left handed lugs on the driver's side that reminded me of that car.
Back to New France, Montreal winters took their toll on the Monaco and it was retired in 1979 due to a rotted frame.

I had a 1070 Newport custom 383 4 barrel auto two door dark brown white vinyl top white interior! Only thing that I wished mine had was the hideaway headlights!
Those hide aways made the car IMHO.
You can actually get 7 people in the trunk. I was one of the 7 so we could get into an All Night Blowout at the I-70 drive-in in Kansas City. It was a girl I knew car. We had 5 girls and 7 guys and just enough money to get the girls in so us guys piled in the trunk. I have to say it was worth it and it's a fun memory I'll cherish forever

I remember my Dad snapping off 2 lug nuts with his lug wrench, thinking both sides unbolted in the same direction.

I'm not a cuda fan, and I really like that front end of the Newport on the front of that chrysler literature you showed us, looked like it had hide a way head lights, but I guess it would depend on my age at the time of purchasing a car, I still have my chevelle from my high-school says but now in my late 40's I'm finding I really like big GM vehicles

Dad had a triple black 4 door hardtop Newport but wouldn't allow me to take on dates (free love era!) so I had to take Mom's 67 Barracuda hardtop!

I believe a 1970 red Newport convertible was used in one of the first episodes of Night Gallery. I always thought it was rare.
I think I'd go with the Hemi Cuda if for no other reason, it didn't require a tugboat and crew for docking.
Some people have difficulties handling large cars. Others find them fun to drive.
@@stopmakingsense9915 I think they're great to drive. Just not in a city where the parking spots are sized for a Prius. Got a diesel truck that's longer than the parking spots.
Mopar convertibles were always rare back then. Don't recall ever seeing any in the wild. A side note: My 53 Packard 2 door hardtop - one of 5150.

1970 was indeed the last year of the C-body full-size convertibles. Also, the last year for Mercury full-size convertibles.
New Yorkers in1970 also had the larger bolt pattern!
i love these cars had 3-7 not verts but they were like chargers with a thyroid issue ,legendary front bumpers for ramming etc when necessary

I wonder.... If since there is an imperial there and that newport, and theyre based on the same vehicle ... Could you take the front clip off the imperial and ressurect that newport convertible with a imperial face? And use the back bumper and trimwork too... Make a "what if" car. Its still gonna be a newport under it all but, it would look like an imperial convertible. Sounds super cool to me.
Hi Steve, great video on this drop top, Chrysler. That's a really difficult question to answer with way too many variables to consider here. I've always been a big luxury car guy but love the feel and excitement of snatching gears and feeling the Gs a Hemi 'Cuda can produce. The Chrysler would be easier to sneak her home in. But most likely she'd be with the guy in the 'Cuda so yeah it's a very very hard decision to make. The convertible top would likely rust out the floor if not under some sort of shelter most of its life. The Hemi 'Cuda with its short wheelbase would likely find a not so friendly power pole to wrap itself around. It's like choosing a woman at a party do you go with the lady with fine jewelry who is stylish, sophisticated with tastefully applied makeup or do you go with the one with their clothes too tight, brazen, and bold "a cocktail waitress in a Dolly Parton wig"? Both will get you to the destination you desire one just a little faster than other. Have a blessed day everyone 🤙🏼 Namaste 🙏🏼
