My dad had a big outfit, and we threshed for 5 farmers. Hooked our teams direct to wagon pole. When i was small i did field pitch, and also spike pitch into thresher. Grandma was the cook, and always sent us out coffee and snack morning and afternoon. Grandma had a cook house on wheels, which went with us. She cooked for about ten hungry men, breakfast, dinner and supper. Those were the days, my friend.
My style of life also, I wish I could go back 65 years and go skinny dipping in the pond with all the neighborhood kids when we enjoyed having fun over having dirty minds. Many of my mothers family were Amish in the trento, Missouri and Northern Missouri areas.
I have been there and done that in Western kansas as well as Grant City, Mo. and redding Iowa, I used to travel the thrashing Bee's and loved it. I wish I was still able to do t. It was hot but fun work. I was slim and would have to craw up inside the old Thrashing Machines and clean the shakers and the Conveyor's. There is not a part on the old equipment I ddo not know how to fix or rebuild. I still have photos of us doing this years ago. The last man we did it for was Blaine Walker of Redding, Iowa. I and ray Leivan rode our bikes up there when I was just 14 years old. I will never forget the breakfast and Lunch the women would fix. I never made much money working on farm's but like you we ate good. Always fresh homemade bread and buns. And fresh homemade butter and fresh ice cold milk. I do miss those days. Usually went swimming after doing barn work and bailing all day in the creek we dammed up.
They use a motor for the baler but not to drive? They appear far more healthy than the average American so who cares about whats easy. If you are healthy-- then hard work IS easy?
There is nothing difficult about the way they live. If you lived it since childhood you would find that it’s not as hard as it seems, but than again for many Americans just getting out of bed and putting on a decent outfit for the day is a difficultly. Most rather just throw on a bathrobe and flip flops. My dad taught me that when you find something to be difficult, you are actually just being lazy. If you put enough effort into it you can do it.
