Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is often considered a children's classic, but it had a greater purpose. I read that book six times in a row when I was in elementary school. My mother finally wrested it away from me and put Little Women in my hands, but I missed Black Beauty. I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for animals ever since.

My mother read Black Beauty and Beautiful Joe (about a dog) to my sister and I when we were children. As a teen I read the Black Stallion series, and also some of Marguerite Henry's books like King of the Wind. Thank you for your interesting content!

I watched a black beauty film at a secondary school called Selwyn college. It’s dark and solemn but not too scary though, as it’s based on various preteen friendly versions of the original story.

I grew up watching the TV series Black beauty, that is probably where my everlasting love for horses comes from. I also read the books by Walter Farley (but really loved just the first), my friend Flicka, but I have never read the novel by Anna Sewell - it's on my shelf, though, I'll get to it !

The 1994 movie that I saw on VHS tape, and re watched many a time as a child, left a big impact on me as a character that I could connect to ant relate to as well. This movie still holds a Very special and Significant place in my Heart still to this Day.

I think its interesting how much anna sewel knew about horses for an victorian gal. At one point she wrote about ginger having a back injury clearly caused by the upright riders seat of that days - the hunt seat we know today, which lifts the weight off the horses back during the jumps, was to be invented 20 years after Black beauty was published. Not to mention her very progressive opinions on docking or how to treat not only your horses but your workers as well.

Actually, lots of Victorian women rode horses and it was thought of as a perfectly respectable form of exercise for young ladies (fashionable and functional riding habits for ladies were very common). Also, I know Anna Sewell had a lot of trouble walking due to a childhood ankle injury so, she likely had to use horses to get around a lot (if not necessarily on horseback, then in horse-drawn carriages). So, she would've been around horses quite frequently and likely picked up a lot of her knowledge through firsthand observations.
