Graduate Research Series Othering and Ideology in Travel Writing

Travel writing is one of the ways to communicate and discover other cultures. Inter-cultural communication leads to building bridges of understanding among different nations and avoiding conflicts. Travel writing essentially introduces the “Other'' and their culture in the form of literary texts. Elbarbary’s research is a stylistic analysis of Resala (922) by Ahmad Ibn Fadlan and Travels in Arabia (1889) by Bayard Taylor. The research aims to examine how two main concepts, “othering” and “ideology” are linguistically manifested in both texts.
Ayman Elbarbary is a translator and teacher from Egypt. He is a certified teacher trainer at Arizona State University. He has also received TESOL certification from Arizona State University, been a US Embassy RELO mentor, and Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant at the University of North Georgia. Ayman earned his B.A. in Czech Language and Literature from Ain Shams University. He studied Slovak at Studia Academica Slovaca (SAS) at the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University in Bratislava. Ayman earned a second B.A. in English Language and Translation from Misr University for Science and Technology. Ayman taught English at the American University in Cairo and Ahram Canadian University. Currently, Ayman is pursuing his master's degree in applied linguistics at Ohio University, where he teaches Arabic, and is writing his thesis on travelogues by, most notably, Ibn Fadlan.
