Here is a brief Introduction to MAMAMOO: SOLAR: Born 1991, Leader and Vocalist. In this video she's the one with short blonde hair MOONBYUL: Born 1992, Rapper and Dancer. The one with light purple hair WHEEIN: Born 1995, Vocalist and Dancer. The one with long blue hair HWASA: Born 1995, Vocalist and Rapper. Short Black hair (her and Wheein are childhood friends and always auditioned together), she actually co-wrote and composed this song about the people who always come at her for wearing outfits not so common in korea (body suits, no bra under tshirt...) so she's telling them haters that she can wear and do whatever she wants and still be cool. These are just their "positions" but tbh all 4 of them Can sing, dance and Rap. As a first impression which one do you think will be your bias? This is a dissing song for all stupid and hateful comments Mamamoo keep on getting for their outfits (especially Hwasa), they're telling all those people writing malicious comments on them keep on zooming and clicking like obsessed but everything about us is hip. Hip means cooler than cool, the pinnacle of what is "it", beyond all trends and conventional coolness. Mamamoo are telling us whatever you are and whatever job you have, you deserve to be blessed and acknowledged for what you do not for what you wear. They comeback with a FULL album, 11 beautiful songs with wide wide wide music genres. Hwasa co-wrote and co-composed the title track 'Hip'. About the Universe concept everything starts with Destiny, the song they performed at Queendom. There are 4 universes in the 1st one Moonbyul, Solar, Wheein and Hwasa are the members of Mamamoo but in the other 3 they live different lifes and do different jobs (like boxer, choreographer, president, environmentalist and so on) but in each Universe the meet with each other in some way because it's their destiny. By the way the album topped iTunes chart WORLDWIDE!
if you enjoyed this track you'd like enjoy their tracks from the past 2 years like yes I am, starry night and egotistic. wind flower is also a great song to check out but it has a more chill vibe compared to the ones I've mentioned. if you're interested in something other than this kind of vibe the girls also used to do a lot of jazz and 50s rock/jazz like mr ambiguous, piano man and ahh oop. they also do a lot of r&b in their albums but a sort of title r&b track you could check out if you're interested would be their pre-debut song don't be happy (theres a very pleasant surprise at the end!) they're known for being extremely versatile in genres and vocal queens so you have a lot to pick from. they also tend to stray away from the more sweet/cute concepts. So someone else mentioned, Mamamoo is known for their strong vocals. This song doesn't really showcase it although you probably could pick up their great vocals being a musician. I recommend two live performances, Immortal Songs Delilah and Wonderful Confession. Many will recommend the Immortal Songs Medley but I do not for a second listening. Immortal Songs is a singing competition that they competed many times, so they are trying to be perfect. The Immortal Songs Medley is them in concert, still great vocals but sound quality and all that might affect. Wind Flower and Piano Man is the two other videos I enjoy.
I would say, _don't_ do the Immortal Songs medley, do the individual full-song performances. There are amazing moments you'll miss otherwise, and there aren't that many of them. I'm a former choir nerd, trust me on this.
First reactions to Mamamoo are fun. And Hip is a really fun track that imo successfully solves a difficult conceptual problem - you'll hear people call this a diss track because they address some of the hateful comments about their fashion choices but actually they were trying to promote a positive message about loving yourself and being yourself and either ignoring the BS or using it as fuel to better yourself. In the alternate universe scenes they were imagining themselves as various different and unusual women who are all Hip in their own way and deserving of respect regardless of whether they're an oddball mom or an activist or a music company CEO or a president who doesn't always dress like one. So rather than a hard-edged hip hop diss track that returned the hate they were getting with defiance and more hate instead they mixed in the fun & funky ska elements like the horns and 60's guitar and went with smoother vocals and rapping than the biting tones they would have used if they just wanted to spit fire. Hwasa does spit at the camera/in your face but actually the lyrics at that point say that haters are spitting in their own faces when they spew toxic crap. As an example of their vocal choices for Hip, Solar (the blond who plays a boxer - MMM"s leader) almost exclusively uses a clear, girly soprano throughout the song but she's actually known as the best belter in the group and she can break your heart and make you cry when she sings a ballad. Mamamoo has been around for over 5 years so there are lots of MVs and hours of live performances available for you. Since they're generally known as the best girl group singers of their generation and their riveting stage presence and live vocals are 2nd to none I'll give you some suggestions for live performances over the years that I think will suit your musical taste. Try two, they are insanely tasty. Do you want an anthemic song like "Before Yesterday" or something more aggressive such as everything they put out this year? Dice is a good start, or Secret(My lips) it just goes up from there. And yes, that is the actual title of the song, parentheticals included.
If you're on it that quick, I dare you randomly pick a BandMaid track such as "Dice" and fax me back about how the bass and drums are half-rate. Nah, you're going to love it.
