What an incredible team Rick and Tim are! I have had the extreme pleasure of being able to mix Rick’s music and the songwriting is some of the best I’ve ever heard and the musicianship is second to none! And of course Tim’s performances are truly superlative! Great to wake up to see a video with these two Masters!
Yes..it's a secret sauce, isn't it? When Rick and Tim collaborate great things happen. In any backdrop of music (see Sahara Snow, or Tao)...there is this really cool chemistry and I have been hooked on it since first hearing Rick and Tim on the earliest releases. (no offence to Neil G.)The new song sounds great ,too!!! Keep doing this Rick...I ,for one, LOVE it!
I remember when I was young and a girlfriend dragged me to a Rick Springfield concert. I assumed that he was just an actor pretending to be a pop star. Boy, was I wrong. Rick and Tim quickly won me over with great guitar riffs and well crafted songs. So, I've been a huge Tim Pierce and Rick Springfield fan ever since that night. It was nineteen eighty something on the Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet tour.
Paul, I feel the same way. I was workin inside somebodys house in 1983 and in their daughters room I hear Rick blasting thru a cheap cassette player..I thought "That sounds good..who is that guy"..Saw Rick and Time live in 84 and that cemented it. I know how legit Rick is. TOTALLY.
What a fantastic interview/video! I love how Tim smiles when he plays. It's infectious. (The good kind.) You can tell he just loves playing guitar and creating music. Awesome.
This is a different tangent Tim, I first discovered Rick when he joined the Aussie pop band Pink Zoot and not long after he joined they dropped the Pink and just became The Zoot. This was probably late 68 early 69. My music teacher used to tell me the Modes are the musical alphabet and triads build chords and ultimately songs and song structure but Rick had this trick of building songs straight out of the Ionian Mode. So the Zoot released this reinvention of Elanor Rigby as a Pop Rock song and it charted well here in Oz though a lot of Beatles pureists ragged it. It is still a great rendition of Elanor Rigby and I became a life time fan of Rick's. He did something similar with "If you believe in magic" for that cartoon show he did when he first went to the US. Other members of The Zoot were Darryl Cotton who later formed Cotton Loydd and Christian and the bass player, second guitar was Beeb Birtles who went on to form Little River Band, later to become LRB. So a little bit of ancient history from here in Oz. Hope you like it.
Tim, after my 45 years in this industry, which includes you and I having mutual friends/acquaintances therein, you take my breath away with your incredible talent, humility and soul. Respect, brother!
Living in Oz was a foundational album for me. All these years later, Rick is still one of my most listened to artists. And so is Tim, as a result. Thanks.
The solo in "affair of the heart" is such genius. The first note lasts 6 measures but constantly evolves so it stays interesting, then there's a huge flurry of notes swelling to a big finish. So good!
I loved “Motel Eyes “ on the living in Oz Album great/amazing solo and guitar work...anything Tim talks about rick or there music together I’m all ears!!!
Love your music RIck. That is a beautiful cross in the background, which is so much needed today. Thanks for sharing. Tim you need to get the ending solo in the song, at a lower volume in the background below the vocals, that sounds awesome and makes you feel like dancing. Fantastic outro. Great song guys, congratulations to all involved in making this song a hit.
I cannot overstate the amount of respect I have for both of these gentlemen. Just finished Rick's book, "Late Late at Night" and highly recommend it. Thanks Tim and Rick!
[WOW. Just came upon this channel.. Much respect to Rick and yourself. THANK YOU for that beautiful outro solo. Tell Rick to release a version with the solo in there! Great song, great players, great ppl. Thank you again for your content.]
Nice insight into that song , sometimes the most simple rhythm part or riff can add so much to a song. And that solo at the end was great!! Tims playing is so inspirational !!
One of my two favorite musicians in the world! Rick was a great songwriter and Tim a great guitarist knowing what to play and when and when not to play! Gets all the great tones for the stars!
My favourite rock singer/songwriter and my favourite rock guitarist back working together again! It doesn't get better than that! Can't wait to hear the final finished track!!
I already clicked the like button before I watched your video as I already knew, if it is from Tim Pierce, for sure it is great. You two guys are so humble and kind people. Yeah, I always loved the Rick Springfield records the two you have made since the 80ies. God bless you guys, for sure I will check on Rick's new album once it is out! Rick said he wants to have a Beatles flavour with this song. Your guitar work really nailed it as always. All I can say, I love it! Thanks for sharing and please stay healthy.
Oh Tim. Beautiful melodic rock solo with some flash, but Man; That was so savage, and it comes across. Very expressive. Another commenter said that would be a solo to rival anything considered classic. Couldn't agree more. Can't wait to hear the take Rick chose for the song. It was a real pleasure to hear You and Rick talk about his music. 👍

I've been a huge Tim Pierce and Rick Springfield fan for what seems like my whole life. One of the best concerts I've ever been to was the Living in Oz tour at the Universal Amphitheater in LA. It was amazing!!! I am a professional drummer today and your playing and Rick's music has always influenced and inspired me on the drums and as a writer as well. Love your channel and thank you so much for your class, musicianship and teaching.
He's had boatloads of work done, as in his whole face and hair, unless he's wearing a toupe. He looks good, but in a totally done kind of way. However, maybe he just got a touch-up, and it needs to settle in. I remember when Marie Osmond, who's in her sixties, got her first (only?) lift, and it looked too tight, but then it settled in. Look up Jaclyn Smith, though, in her 70s, for some stellar, realistic work, though. Raquel Welch, too. But whatever works for him is cool! I know these performers feel pressure to look young. I also love that Rick has been so open about his struggles with depression. It definitely helps others, especially men, to have the courage to seek treatment.
Great songs are all about the feel and the groove that stirs something inside us. Way too many get caught up in the technically and forget about the musically. Sometimes a simple part is all that's required. Nice video Tim.
Love this video. Great story, and great playing. I'll be watching for that "Jesse's Girl" lesson. Neil is one of my favorite players. I can only imagine how big those shoes felt when you had to step up and play those parts live.
Hi Tim. I love Rick's music every since working class dog came out. Hes a great singer/songwriter and much respect to you both. As a fellow guitarist man i applaud you you make a guitar sing. Always on of my favorites by rick is the song "Souls" from oz. Do i detect you playing lead on that song it's fantastic. Good work on this by both of you. Bless you both and keep rocking
The documentary on Sound City popped into my UA-cam feed this week (lock down YT freebie) excellent doc, Ricks part was honest and gutzy, kudos to him.
My first concert was Rick during the living in Oz tour. Meadowlands in NJ June 1983. I was 13. Have seen Rick live at least 6x and met him and his band in February 2004 backstage. Had my photo taken with Rick also. I think Ronnie was the one who took the photo. All the guys were nice Roger carter, Matt bissonette was hilarious, very funny guy etc. Rick was super nice and signed my living in Oz program and one other for me. He’s actually very laid back and easy to talk to.
I couldn't stop smiling through the whole vid! Been a fan of the Tim and Rick duo since 'Living in Oz' album. Rick's last two albums, 'Rocket Science' and *especially* 'The Snake King' are killer, with slabs of tasty playing by Tim Pierce on all tracks. The slide work on Snake King album is *great*. Looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of this latest song - hopefully album.
Awesome Awesome Awesome - from the team that brought you the fantastic solo in Rick's song Alyson!!!! now where can I get a tab for that? A truly great solo!!!
Hi, Tim. Been following your channel for sometime now. I'd noticed your work back in the eighties with Rick Springfield. Liked you playing ever since. Can you please show us and talk a little about "Tiger by the Tail"? I think this is an awesome solo and the rhythm isn't bad either. ;-) Greetings from Sweden
I've always been a big fan of Rick's from the beginning. He's a damn good musician/songwriter. Tim Pierce, Brian Setzer and Tom Scholz (Boston) are my favorite guitarist. 🙂
I always wondered what happened to Mr. Springfield. I’ve been a Tim Pierce fan forever, and I’m also crazy about PRS guitars. I purchased my first PRS (Santana SE)in 2012, and ended up selling it a couple of years to get a Core 24. Since then I’ve managed to collect four more PRS guitars (Core 12 string, a P24, a Silver Sky,, and a T50 acoustic), but I want a semi hollow-body so bad I can almost feel in in my grubby little paws! I’ve also got a Taylor T5z Custom, which may be as close to a PRS Hollow-Body 2 as I will ever get. 😟 Oh well...I’m very grateful for what the Lord has provided me! Keep on rocking, guys!! 👍
Rick has consistently putting out new material and touring constantly. I've probably seen him 3-4 times over the last 5 years. Check out some of his post-Rock of Life catalog. Tim plays on a lot of it although they've never toured together since Tao (I think).
I was shocked to see how many different groups Tim has played with. He plays like I wish I could, and he makes it look so easy! He’d be an easy fella to hate, if he weren’t such a nice guy!! 🤨
Venus In Overdrive is all I say. I mean, I am a fan since forever. But VIO is an album that completely blows me away. He is still relevant. Glad I saw them live in Germany a few years back.

This post prompted me to look up two of my favorite Rick Springfield songs: “Don’t Talk to Strangers” and “Calling All Girls”. I played “Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet” repeatedly on cassette in my car when I was in graduate school in ’82 and ’83. It was a blast revisiting the live video footage on UA-cam. Such high quality, all out entertainment from a first-class performer still going strong. And I was struck by the genuineness and kind soul that was evident in all the interviews. With a Ph.D. in clinical psychology retired from private practice and having suffered periodic and repeated bouts of severe depression throughout my life, I am appreciative of Rick’s openness in sharing his personal struggles with the condition and serving as an inspiration to others who can benefit from his advice and example. I too thought it was just a manifestation of my reflective nature. I used to joke that I have the temperament of a philosopher/artist/writer/musician without any of the talent - Ha! It is so cool that you two have been collaborating for such a long time and that you are such good friends. And it was fun seeing you in some of the videos, Tim. I am greatly enjoying your Masterclass, by the way, along with your regular UA-cam posts. Great body of work! Both of you!
Yeah, Ricks book goes into the depression issue quite alot. And I am pleased he doesn't romanticize mental health issue. He just DOESN'T. It's another reason I respect him....he is not perfect..but he is real.
I am most familiar with 'Rock Of Life' album, though i certainly have heard (and played, here and there) 'Jessie's Girl' ... i think Rick is great, the song Honeymoon In Beirut is really quite awesome, what a great vibe & i suppose my personal fave (absolutely listen if you haven't yet heard it).
