This is the car that made me love the XA falcon still to this day ROCK SOLID
Thanks Mickey, I agree
I actually only ever seen the car mmm around 30 years ago when H had it out the back and over a pit of the now infamous Jim Mock Ford. The dealership was closed on that day and a good mate was an apprentice there and he called me to say it was going to be there. The two things i most recall was the underside was better paint than any car i had ever seen. The second thing was H swung the drivers door open right next to a pallet of scrap and junk and as he nonchalantly swung door open and reflex grabbed the window frame it stopped about two mm from hitting a piece of angle hanging out the pallet. It happened so quickly i had no time to warn H and luckily it didnt hit, but i often remember thinking how one little scratch would have been an insufferable amount of work to fix. Great vid btw and kept me watching every minute of it. THANKS H.
Nice story, glad your enjoying the show
Wow so much details and effort. Great build and car well done.
Thanks
Fantastic Howard 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
This car will always be the number 1 Street Machine for me
Thanks mate, I appreciate the support
Rock 3, I remember my old man saying they asked to take photos of the car for street machine in the quarry at Eagle Hawk, 5 minute up the road from Summernats on the federal highway. Noticed the background in the photos at 57:44 and 58:14. Top stuff guys.
Yes mate was a day break shoot,
Mate your a wizard
Thanks Paul, That's an old one. Haven't heard that for a while
First street machine magazine I bought had the rock XA in it And that’s where my love of cars came from that car splendid work Howard thanks for the inspiration
Cheers Paul, it’s been fun
l look forward to you shows every week....Thank You for your efforts in doing them
You are so welcome
I snapped a photo when you hit the hay bail at Wagga.
Yeah that was a blast that year
A beautiful car and unbelievable workmanship! Hats off to the master again.
Thanks Dean, plenty more to come
Last time i saw this car was at seaview highschool Seacombe Heights South Australia 2009 all ford day with my XB Hardtop was still in great condition
Good to hear, we did a tidy up on it for Summernats 30
What a wonderful series with all the in-depth work that is involved in creating a true show car which most people wouldn't be aware of. Congratulations Howard and your team for creating these mobile pieces of art
Thanks Hayden, were only just getting started
Howard , any chance the panel van will get a mural of all your cars down the side ? Possibly even a wrap that could be removed after a period ? I think it would be an awesome tribute / celebration for when you get it going
Luke
That's got some merit Luke
I always get lost for words when it comes to that car. I will say that you are one of the most hardest working car guy out there and you certainly deserved to win Top Street Machine Award.
I really wanted to win that car and if it had been with me all those years, I'd had kept it supremely mint and cherished it immensely. Not taking away anything from Mario, but what was he thinking with the gawdy flames and grille treatment ?? Yuk. It ruined it.
The 30 year anniversary was a Blessing to Mario and I'd be on my knees thanking you for the hard work you put to refresh it the way you did. The car looked as good as it did way back then.
Rock 3 is truly an iconic car.
Thank you for the memories Howard.
Also a big thank you to your daughter for her editing work too. I know how much time that takes !
God Bless.
Thanks Tony, Louise is doing an awesome job. we are learning all the time
Here we go again author watch .. Always miss something ..
Good Job David, working on ROCK 4😀
I would love to see you do a where are they now episode would love to see what they all look like today
Hi, I am doing that at the end of each episode.
I watch this in the garage while working on my own stuff, helps me with inspiration and also good info along the way, thanks Kev, 😂. The XA had so many changes ,,what a life. Cheers.
Awesome, thank you!
My favorite car that you built Howard Rock 3 love it. Great video.
Thanks for watching!
At 54:23. Gaps are really bad. Not picking on it because gaps wernt paid attention to much in those days. My gaps were just as bad as well back then. It shows how far Howard has progressed from those days.
EDIT: as soon as i pressed play again Howard mentioned the gaps as well lol.
Seems hard to believe it was 33 years ago.
Hi Howard and Dale, very well done production, and great memories of what inspired me as a young bloke. I would like to know some info on that battery operated buffer that was in one of the pictures ? Keep up the good work.
Thanks Johno
Hi Johno, I don’t believe there is a battery buff in that episode. I have been using a Mirka 70mm one on some of the shows.
Thanks Howard, I will look for one, it looks really handy.
Iconic build Howard 👏 Peter Ryan still has the 32 Coupe which has been taken to a new level and he's completely restoring his LC Torana XU1 back to stock. Rod Lingard, the man with the golden needle as we called him, is in Shepparton still in the rod scene.
Looking forward to the next episode 😀
Thanks for the updates Pat.
on da right
Great show again. A car way ahead of it's time. Keep the shows coming.
Thanks! Will do!
Hi Howard, loved the episode (and all the shows), and this car was inspirational for me in the 90s and still today. Regarding the door locks, you mention it was an engineer's requirement to have the buttons on the outside after shaving the locks. Is this still the case in NSW? Thanks.
Hi, I believe that is still the case. Needs to have a manual form of opener not electric.
Thanks Howard, more thought required! Love Boss XC colour, might make me change my plans! Cheers
I had this car on my wall growing up. Forgot it existed, brings back memories wow. I follow this channel but so surprised to see it.
Cheers mate
Awesome car one I've loved for many years alot of history and great to see the build of it the way you did it
Thanks George, 13 more to go.
@@AstillDesign mate your welcome. How is boss xc coming along
Slow, looking for some help at the moment
Excellent videos, thanks so much!
Our pleasure
Love the video mate thanks for sharing
Our pleasure
Absolutely love this car brings back so many fond memories of reading about and being blown away by this beast great build you might say it was ROCK SOLID. Thanks for sharing mate look forward to all your videos.
Thanks for your support
Hi first of all I want to say love the channel and like watching someone that has an eye for detail but Rock 3 what's happening with those panel gaps.i know you said it was 30 years ago but that doesn't cut it with me.we used to go to the dealers back then and the first thing you looked at on a car was all the panel gaps and if they were bad.i don't mean perfect but as good as ford were doing back then.no car should have been judged with a boot sitting like that they obviously cared more about innovation then quality.every time I opened the garage and looked at it I would be annoyed.
Anyway I know you have definitely addressed those issues as you progressed and it's also good to know someone else cleans the inside of their wheels when they wash their car.
Keep up the good work with the show
Hey mate, I can’t go back and change it. I’m just bringing you what it was. History not a glossy version of it. I am as shocked as you but that’s how it was.
@@AstillDesign I appreciate your honesty and thanks for replying it's good to know you read everything most people would start reading my message and just delete it.
Cheers
Love the white scoop. Where can l get one please mate?
Google Hornet scoop, you will find plenty available
Gents, fantastic viewing. Mate you are an inspiration to all hot rudders and car enthusiasts.
Thanks mate appreciate our support
27:50 - One of my favourite Street Machine covers
Loving the build series videos Howard.
Thanks for following
yes, remember the magazine well
Beauty mate, friday night, a couple beers and some excellent viewing, thank you
Our pleasure
Absolutely loved this episode Howard, was a really great trip down memory lane. Mario had allowed me to spend a lot of time with the Falcon, you know, for research purposes 😂
Really great that this show visualised a lot of aspects to the car that you just don’t see in magazines. Sadly, in the recent Sydney storms, the ceiling in the garage failed and gyprock sheet tore loose and landed on the roof of the Falc. It’s been relocated elsewhere until he can get the damage sorted out.
That’s is sad to hear.
@57:37 looks amazing
@1:00 melbourne is where i saw it for the 1st time - Howard Astill's craftsmanship got me
thanks for sharing

No problem
had my '62 'where were you in '62 ?' candy apple red pontiac convertible in the same show...hahaha

Yes sir!!
Need to give poor old Dale a coffee before the next one. Very interesting, cheers
Was a very late start, after a stressful weekend. We finished around 11:30pm deadlines.😩
That was the last summernats i went to number 30 seeing Rock 3 and more gave my camera a good work out for 2 long days ,, Keep those videos coming , Cheers ....
That is awesome!
Still beautifull, would love to see it in the flesh again
True
Loving this series, long episode though! Hope you don't mind that I've stopped for lunch half way through! Haha
Keep them coming, nice work
Thanks Ross, was a bit worried when I started reading that.😀👍
@@AstillDesign episode length not a problem for me, I really like the story telling and the banter style. Takes me back to when I was following this from so long ago!
Thanks Ross
Beautiful XA ALL THE WAY ANYDAY
Cheers
@@AstillDesign your very welcome I had a XA GT in the 90s and my ex just took my 1973 ex hwy patrol Dubbo chaser. She was the only metallic Kelly green 4 door unmarked to serve in Australia. Some guy from WA bought her. I miss them all had a few. Gold landau 1974 also. At least you can see out of the 4 doors lol. One day I'll get another I hope. Cheers love your vids.
Cheers mate, you will get another one
@@AstillDesign there a bit expensive these days
Loving the channal mate. The year of the giveaway was my first summernats (I went down with Adam Lock RIP in the big block monaro in the street machine cover pic you featured.) Between your car and his really boosted my interest in street machines so thanks.
Sounds like you had a super start.😀
Hi from New Zealand I wonder how many car builds were influenced by this car it certainly did a number on me
Yeah plenty I think, even in its red version
I Grew up reading Street Machine that's all we had Rock solid 1,2 pioneer coupe were what we dreamed our cars to be
Cheers mate
This is a fantastic series. Brings back memories of high school and flicking through street machine mag with friends, might just have to run through them again for old times sake. I really appreciate the detail you go into with every video.
I realise a lot of the footage is from a bygone era, but would you have any video of the cars you've built? I have not heard what they actually sound like.
Good thought, might be a little hard to find.🤔
Hey fella shouldn't the owner have that engineers report cheers mate
As I said this is a copy of the original
@@AstillDesign sorry mate did not here you say that in the vid
defiantly and iconic car. pretty good for a FORD lol !!!
CORRECT 😂😂
Would love to see all your cars back together 1 day at a show mate.
Would be good, but would take some logistical and extensive cost.
@@AstillDesign For sure. Always drawbacks. But 🤞.
Love this car..
Hopefully my shirt is on its way..
Ha ha
Hi Luke, they are printed on order so will be a week.👍
@@AstillDesign thanks mate
@@AstillDesign thanks mate got the shirt. It's spot on...
The great man
Dale goes alright!
Gday. Im enjoying the build series , its good to learn something . Congrats on all you have achieved. I have a couple of questions. First, have you ever thought of building a street rod ? Secondly with all the hours taken to complete the cars, how do you manage to find a happy work family ballance?
Hi, have thought about it but cant see it ever happening, You need a very understanding wife and a job that is different to your hobby. Now that I do it for work it's hard to do the same thing as your hobby. From the kids perspective they at least new I was in the shed if they needed me not down the pub or gone all day playing golf.
IS DIS ROLY O'LEARY?
did you receive any money when you won the awards, could the car pay for itself ?
There was prize money, it payed for the travel cost. that was about it. It's even less now
I love this car. A great influence on my love of cars and modifying. Love to business. What would it take for me to get a shirt with the Astill logo in full colour like the one your wearing but without rock 3 on it?
Hey mate, I have added the Black logo shirt to the list, Cheers H
Another great video so nostalgic, what a lucky man Mario, looks like a lot of hours went into Rock 3 is it comparable to Boss XC?looking forward to all of the build series, cheer's
Hi, BOSSXC is a totally different build in both complexity and quantity of work and changes.
8.47 That's ruff as fuck!!!
It’s all history, nothing hidden. 32 years ago.
guy on the left is falling asleep
Yes SK it was a late one and it showed. We try our best but it’s not our day job just yet.
Great episode!! Just out of curiosity, when you had it engineered to be registered, having the brake rotors chromed, should it have passed or not? not knocking just curious. cheers
Hi, the rotors were machined and painted so the engineer would not have known.
