I agree. Most people coming here tend to assimilate into our way of life. It may take a minute to adjust but all in all they come because people are nice, and it's safe and clean here. It's very much a southern classy culture in Gville.
I’m an upstate resident. My son works for a major construction supplier. If you move here do not buy a new home. They are substandard. They are throwing up subdivisions to take advantage of the migration. These homes will give you headaches for years to come.
and there is apparently no planning here, either- they're throwing up subdivisions anywhere they can buy land and making the streets more and more congested
This is true. I know a bunch of Yankees that moved to a place called Lyman on the outskirts of Greenville/Spartanburg to one particular subdivision, they bought up the whole street, one for daughter, one for mom, one for and so on......now they are in a neighborhood battle with the construction company as all the problems are coming to light. The construction company is winning lol 🤣 They are losing everything. The "jobs" they came for are non existent and last I heard the wives were trying to find work cleaning houses.
@@mamaad123 I’m sorry to hear that. I can’t imagine buying multiple houses and dealing with these construction woes. Most of these subdivisions were picked up by foreign investors. My daughter is in Human Resources at a business not far from there. There were great paying jobs for the taking up until two weeks ago. The current economy is so skittish they called a hiring freeze.
I'm all for the growth and expansion of my beloved city, but please do not ruin it. We love the people who come to visit. all we ask is that you be respectful of our town.
That is very cool to say...and reasonable too - what more could an outsider ask really? Only problem is everyone wants to go where there are less problems...and quite often they themselves bring along problems.
Bottom line is, people will keep fleeing to where the rent is cheapest, until there is no affordable housing anywhere. If we had affordable housing in our cities, we would stay there. Many of you now saying "ok but don't bring your politics with you and ruin our town" Are the same people that months ago when people were complaining about cost of rent vs. minimum wage, you said "lol just move then if you don't like it! Housing isn't free and money doesn't grow on trees! Just get a better job!...oh wait, now your displacing ME? Not OK!!!"
@@cosmicllama6910 well I'm more upset about the fact that what made Greenville special is pretty much gone. Everywhere u go there's a large crowd. The festivals used to be small things now half the city is going to them. I loved Greenville when it was more of a town with a strong sense of community. Now it's trying to be like Atl and Charlotte, without the infrastructure to do so
I am a native of Columbia South Carolina. I visited Greenville a few times about 10 years ago. One visit was to see a Bob Seger concert live. It was a good time. Prior to the concert, we visited a bar for a drink and a restaurant for dinner. I saw and experienced the cultural diversity that has evolved over the years. My most prominent impression was that it reminded me of Chicago. Only, a much smaller version. But, it was packed with authentic restaurants with food and owners from other lands. Many other businesses owned by transplants who have brought their products to Greenville to offer genuine quality and diverse shopping experiences. Again, think big city appeal and opportunities, just a smaller version. Very Charming and very safe.
12:30 As a long term native of Greenville I must disagree with how polite people are. We are just people. You can't throw all of us into a basket like that. I have met amazing people and truely awful people and everything in between. We are not amazing people like the guest keeps saying. Also thought it was funny how he kept talking how people don't flaunt stuff as 80k plus Range Rovers, Mercedes and Lexus LXs are on the screen lol. But it is a very rare sight to see a Lambo or something like that.
Nothing much stood out to me when I went to Greenville besides the nice downtown. I was considering moving there but kinda glad I didn't now. Then on the flip side I ended up going to overcrowded FL which is facing their own high cost of living problems. I was in Columbia SC but I ended up going to FL from there and before I left I checked out Greenville.
@@MeltinJohn Greenville is a nice enough city, but the schools leave something to be desired. And when you have young kids that's usually the first thing you look at when moving to a new location. So for now Greenville is a no go.
A few montgs ago we moved from Washington State to a property 30 mikes from Greenville. Compared to people from the West Coast I think overall people in South Carolina are lots more friendly. Just my opinion. I am so glad we moved here but we like it just the way it is. Hopefully not very many people will move here that want to change it. It is lovely just the way it is!!!!!!
Everybody's mileage varies I guess, but I'm an Asheville native who moved to Greenville in the late 90's, and I saw the difference immediately. To me Asheville was dirty, depressing, expensive, filled with a bunch of surly, angry hipsters, and I was miserable. I came to Greenville and felt at home immediately.
@@Summer-zv1tq I’ve lived in Greenville(Simpsonville area) for 15+ years. The schools are absolutely horrible.. graduated 2013 and I honestly learned more from the 4 years of private elementary school in Florida compared to 7 years of middle - high school in Greenville. Fights everyday at all schools, drugs are rampant, hands down all around bad education system. You’ve made the right choice. One of the schools had over 60 bomb threats called in over the course of a school year.
"Greenville might be one of the best small towns in the country!" It's not going to stay that way if people keep moving here. Your guest not being a Greenville native surprised me. He didn't sound like a Charleston native the least little bit either. Lots you could have found out about the city if you'd asked someone who's done more than retire here. I grew up there. The Westin Poinsett hotel downtown you passed is where Jesse Jackson worked as a young man. Greenville was once the mutual hunting grounds of the Cherokee to the west, and Catawba to the northeast. No Native Americans lived between the Saluda and Broad rivers in the Upcountry, which is what it was called before "Upstate" became popular. This was because there was the Low Country, Charleston, and everything more than a day's round trip by horse from Charleston was the Backcountry. The Upstate was settled mostly from the north, and mostly from Western PA, with the Scotch-Irish being predominate, though with plenty of Germans, English, and a few Sephardic Jews. Probably the first Jewish man to die in any American war died in SC's Yemasee war prior to the Revolution, though that happened in what is now Oconee County. When I was a boy Greenville had two main industries; cotton mills and Donaldson AFB. Donaldson serviced aircraft, including combat aircraft from the Vietnam War. I used to watch Phantom F-4's take-off during the war. The Palmetto Exposition Center, or whatever it's called now, was originally Textile Hall, where new products and equipment of the industry was showcased at events that drew people from all over the world. Greenville called itself "The Textile Capital of the World" back then. One last little anecdote and I'll wrap up this "comment." It was a married couple from up north who retired from the Air Force at Donaldson who opened the very first ethnic restaurant in Greenville; Capri's Italian. As far as I know the original location is still operating.
Too many Yankees are flooding in like roaches!!!! Soon it will be crowded like china !! And crime will be up and cost will be sky high !!! Thanks yanks
Thank you. The guy didn't know what he was talking about. BMW has been here 30 years, not close to 20. He knew nothing about the industry here. The farmland around the Upstate is disappearing because of subdivisions. Housing is not affordable anymore. Yes, our culture has been affected. Our southern charm is being diluted by transplants.
An excellent comment! It’s nice to see someone take the time to write more than a couple of sentences. I lived in Rockingham and Wilmington Nc in the mid 60’s. I have been back a couple of times since then and was shocked at how many changes had occurred.
I really hate that people are migrating here...for financial reasons. People moving here seem to be making things more expensive. Yes, building beautiful "housing" that the "locals" can not afford because people from other areas who have had the opportunity to make more money over their life span are bringing the out-of-state money here. Building expensive homes right next door to less valuable homes only to make the taxes on the less expensive homes increase and eventually taken from those families. Then the home is bought by a developer and fixed up to be sold to someone from out of town at an exorbitant price. Downtown has become apartment complexes on every corner. But, yes....Greenville is beautiful and SAFE! We are loving people who rarely meet a stranger. So, if you move here....love us back!
So true.. Im in Boiling Springs in Spartanburg and its a major suburbia now and it sucks with traffic. My grandma and grandad lived in Greenville. Good memories.
Should everyone cater to your needs and your rights because you were "born there"? Does being "born there" make you entitled to not have to compete? Kiddy mentality.
If he had went 100 yards the opposite direction from where he began, he’d took you Guys to West G. And lemme tell ya, it IS some GHE-TOE. And goes on for a ways too. This area AINT all THAT. And I love Nick. Not saying that to be a downer. I say it as someone that’s lived here my entire life.
Great video! 1) Annexation laws keep the city proper small. It's much larger than 70k. The city has done a great job with in-fill development. 2) There's a lot of established, unincorporated communities around Greenville. Many are lower income areas. Not sure if Greenville's been gung-ho in annexing these areas. 3) Because Greenville's city limits are tiny and the rest is surrounded by unincorporated areas, the suburban sprawl is consumed by Greer, Mauldin and Simpsonville. These towns are affordable if you have good-paying jobs, but expensive if you're considerablly blue collar. 4) The wealth is here, but definitely subtle and hidden. Most of it is displayed in downtown, around the natural amentities and pocketed communities in East and Southeast Greenville.
Correct Jonathan, you can literally walk to the city limits in a few minutes in several directions from downtown. If the city limits just went out 5 miles in a circle from downtown the population would push 300k. Not exactly a small “town”.
@Mike C I agree. The wages here haven't really caught up with the standard of living in the area without having to pull from several different incomes to stay afloat.
Moved to Greenville 5 years ago from Vancouver Washington and seriously love it here! We’re conservative Christians and meet like minded people every where around here.
Greenville has had the same Republican mayor since 1995. He and his community has built a beautiful little city that has a great future. It's great that the woke liberal left didn't ruin this place. I'm retiring here soon from Florida. Where I live in Florida the developments are over developed and populated. I had to find a nicer and less expensive place to live.
My family and I RANDOMLY chose Greenville for a weekend visit and we were blown away by its beauty and uniqueness. As a result of growing up in NY, we always have this bias that nothing will match our city. But after the trip, it completely opened our eyes as to what other gems are hidden throughout this country. Definitely have to go back!
I have lived here my whole life and trust me it is worth the hype. You have that sweet southern feel to the town and the city’s not too big, not too busy, just enough people and it has great food!
I have been planning to move from London, UK, to Greenville (am a Brit). What's the countryside like around the area? Is it possible to buy some land and build a house on it or better to buy a built property outright?
@@wellardme there is great land right around the Greenville area!! I will say that things like property taxes and prices on houses and land have increased and I think that’s one thing to consider. Yet overall all of my friends and family that have built houses have been quite pleased with the outcome!! I definitely recommend building here!
@Clarrrr really appreciate your answer 🙏 Ironically i haven't ever been to the States but after years of research, I've chosen Greenville. I'll be popping over soon to check the place out)
Why didn't you ask a REAL Greenvillian instead of folks that have only been here 5 years? I was born here and can tell you a little better what is going on. BMW has been here beginning in 1992. A great many jobs were created., and it and other industries have attracted many newcomers. A previous commenter mentioned the fact that Greenville City is small which is true and it creates the illusion that all is great. Greenville city stays small and manageable so that it is clean, safe, and fun. There are no vagrants spare changing you or urinating on the sidewalk. This is because it is NOT TOLERATED. The problems occur in the surrounding counties. The influx of all those moving here is making the cost of living soar.. This, in turn, creates more poverty since the cost of living outprices homes for many born here.. Also, all these overpriced, cheaply built housing developments are swallowing up all the rural farm areas. New residents are clogging roads with traffic, overtaxing our infrastructure, and yes, diluting our culture. This of course is not visible from the pretty clean streets downtown. We are nice people, our culture is to be so, and we welcome those who come here and want to BLEND in and become good neighbors. What we do not like are those that criticize our way of life and think they must CHANGE it. We ARE conservative here, We evaluate people based on WHO they are not WHAT they are. We have traditional and religious values and will keep them., We do have crime, gangs, and drug problems just like everywhere else, but we do try to eliminate those when possible.
@@cannotbeshaken7889 that’s not an exaggeration. The developments are going up exponentially at this point, and they are covering up all of the beautiful farmland that used to make the upstate beautiful with just dumb people.
@@joebrewer4529 I'm sorry, I must have definitely posted that to the wrong person on accident. Like a different thread. It's been so long ago, I don't remember. Greenville sounds great, I really hope you guys don't get 20 thousand new people dropped off in your town.
Agreed, my family has lived near Greenville, in Taylors and the Spartanburg area… LOTS of people are moving there, and it’s bumming him out because they are cutting down the woods for developments
I remember when I was living in Greer in college and everything going crazy. That was the early 00s. Greenville has the benefit of the foothills. I live outside Lexington, SC and it's similar with developers snatching up and putting down developments everywhere. A large former farm in front of my neighborhood (60+ year old neighborhood) is about to be the site of an apartment complex. The reasons for living where I do are trimmed more and more every year.
@@davidfence6939 a 500 unit apartment complex is at least a little better than 50 3000sqft paper-mache cookie cutter McMansions on individual 1/2 acre lots.
I’ve lived in Greenville my entire life and there are two things that you glossed over (or I just missed). The first is the water quality/taste, it’s been ranked some of the best in America and it shows, when ever I go on a trip and go to rinse my mouth with tap water, I spit it out forgetting that it isn’t Greenville tap water. The second thing is the children’s museum, which you can see down the road he turned off of at 9:43 ish (it has a colorful statue made of geometric shapes), it’s a 3 story building filled with both fun and educational activities for kids, with an outside playground and indoor “climbing maze” (hard to describe it but if you know you know). Of course it has been on the negative due to COVID. There is also a section that gets changed every month so there is always something new to do.
When I moved here in 1977, the first thing I was asked was , “What religion are you? Have you joined a church yet?” My daughter is a school teacher and South Carolina ranks LAST in SAT scores.
@@sandranorman5469 Ranked last is that good or bad and is it a place to raise teens and how is public transportation I don't have a vehicle just yet and are the car lots fair on purchasing a used vehicle
Also could have included Unity Park... but it probably wasn't open 2 years ago. Now it's a gathering spot for families of all kinds... with a growing number of restaurants moving into the buildings along the river.
I’ve been living in Greenville South Carolina for 22 years and it used to be a nice place when I first moved here but all the greedy developers are taken all our farm land away. The roads are getting too congested and can’t handle the traffic.Hopefully in another year I’ll be moving out in another year or two.
I lived in Simpsonville for 10 years. We moved there when I was 8, born in Greenville and lived in the Donaldson Center area. I was driving for Uber last week and could t not believe all the trees they have cut down on Fork Shoals road and the new subdivisions . It’s CRAZY
South Carolina seems to be sharing the same problem as here in Tennessee and North Carolina, skyrocketing traffic and cost of living. At least Pennsylvania's safe for now...
I’m in NJ and always think about small towns in PA that are half the cost of north Jersey… we are getting flooded with New Yorkers and people can’t afford here anymore, it was already tough but now it’s impossible. More move south like Florida and Carolinas but I can’t imagine some don’t move out to Pa it’s just they stay in eastern Pa, I think out of Pittsburgh is very nice personally. Central/north central Pa is where I would go but I’d rather move south.
I just moved from Lancaster county pa, to Myrtle Beach area (Conway). I love it here but there is no place like home in Pennsylvania. If it didn't snow and get so cold I'd still be there
There are no "best kept secrets" anymore. Anywhere that has a good economy and is a desirable place to live has seen tremendous growth in the last decade. I can understand why the locals are mad--I was one of those locals who left Colorado due to the population explosion. But I can also understand why people leave the frozen depressing north or their madhouse big cities for a better quality of life.
I'm about to leave CO for SC. Going to Laurens county. It makes me sad tbh. I love Colorado, I own land here. Hell I own a gold claim in cripple creek! But I just can't stand all the transplants and how expensive everything is. The politics changed too quickly and the bills are sky high.
Oh No. I cant believe you are featuring my city. We are full. Just FYI. I moved here from Chicago back in 1993. I havent left since then. Dont let the secret out! :)
The intro got me lol. Omg I love the scenic view. I want to know how’s the schools there, I’m a teacher I’m tired of NYC. Afraid of the crazy and homelessness people might come to invade. I want real southern cooking.
Greenville is growing too quickly, and people moving from the west are raising prices and pushing locals out of their homes and neighbors. The rate of pay is smaller than most of the country making it difficult for many people to pay their bills. Traffic is getting hectic and unfortunately the southern hospitality, and the southern attitude that draws people to the area is also being pushed out. I am a native to Greenville and have lived all around the country, but returned home for the southern feel. That unfortunately is changing and being pushed out. Also the Ma and Pa shops and restaurants are bring forced to close being replaced with bougie establishments killing the Greenville feel. Locals here are not happy with the rising prices and losing their homes due to all the talk on what a great place Greenville is. Any place can be great if people put some work into it, so we want you to stay where you are and if you want to visit, fine, but do not move here or you can be a part of pushing locals out of their homes.
Thank you for this. Gentrification is rampant and people just don’t care about the lower income people who are being evicted and priced out of their homes.
Greenville has one of the most impressive downtowns in any city I've been to. And nestled right in there is Falls Park, Greenville's version on Central Park, a vibrant centerpiece for the city.
Greenville is growing rapidly. I Lived there from 2014-2016 and it changed so much in that short time. It’s not quite as southern as you’d think though. A large percentage of the population are from the northeast and Midwest. I thought it had more of a New England vibe than anything else.
I was there last month at the festival downtown. Im thinking very seriously about moving there. Never seen such a beautiful picture perfect City in my entire life
20:00 I live in this part of town, the Eastside. I moved from Florida with no hope in life, got a great job, built a house, only wish I had the sense to come sooner. The way young people.have to struggle in Florida is outrageous. At least there is a few good places in the world. But yeah, Eastside Greenville is zoned commercial out of the zazoo.
I wish Americans who have traveled abroad to Europe, specifically to the Netherlands, and decide to team up and create new cities across the US that are pedestrian, bike, and railway-friendly. Why can't we start doing this by removing some of the stringent zoning laws of our states in order for this to happen? Ugh!
You have to address crime drugs and homeless first. In cities with subways and pedestrian streets, vagrants shit in the subways and take drugs there. Nutcases attack people on subways and pick pocket them. If you have small children you are safe in your car mostly.
@@betaylor5031 they are concentrated there because it’s the only walkable area. If the whole city was walkable then the homeless would be more spread out and maybe more manageable
Also a quick note to anyone watching this channel looking to move here- the infrastructure/Duke power is TERRIBLE. We got 8 inches of snow on Sunday and 100,000 people lost power. Also no one here knows how to drive in snow. If you are and experienced snow driving person, still stay inside because everybody else becomes a menace on the roads
I am a chauffer with Greenville Town Car Service - While on a drive to Charlotte - a guy spun out on the black ice - not once but twice - in front of me! I hit the brakes and looked over - he was still spinning. It was like a movie.
Prices, traffic, crime, and temps are already sky rocketing there. Still looks nice with its downtown and having 120 restaurants in downtown, which is the most restaurants per capita, but I could definitely see this city becoming far too overpopulated for its size. Especially being almost equidistant from Charlotte and Atlanta, two large southern cities definitely going to get lots of people from there that want smaller city life. Seems like everyone is either moving to the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, Arizona, Utah, Colorado or Idaho these days.
It is already too populated, we can't go downtown like we used too few years ago. 😔... And there are plenty of homeless people here, many of these people are homeless because they just can't afford to live here!😞
Also the Appalachian areas of Georgia and the Carolinas are getting "half backs" - people from up north who moved to Florida, hated it and moved halfway back
I love it here and was born and raised here….but the infrastructure can’t handle any more growth. The roads in all the suburbs are still two lanes everywhere even though thousands of homes are being added.
I moved here from Orlando five years ago to escape the traffic, crime and just rude citizens. To be brief, I’ll never leave the Greenville area for its beautiful four seasons, friendliest people I’ve ever met and the ease of getting things done. Oh yeah, awesome airport

About four years ago, a friend from Richmond called me excitedly with news that he had accepted a software job In Greenville. I thought he had lost his mind. First, A drive up to Richmond from the Raleigh area for the change of cultural experience was always fun. Secondly, WHY would a sane person move from VA to SC ? So, he picked me up on the way down to see his new office space, meet coworkers, etc. I must admit, I was amazed by the downtown; if I had been blindfolded and taken there, I would have never guessed I was in SC. As the gentleman mentioned, the food scene is varied and sophisticated. After work, we joined his coworkers at a brewpub, then strolled to a great sushi restaurant for dinner, and finished the evening at a rooftop bar. The next day, we had brunch near the stunning park and walked along the river; in the afternoon, we had appointments to see a few downtown apartments because he wanted to walk or bike to work. Now, I look forward to long weekends in Greenville where there is so much to see and do.

This place has a pretty high walk score. Lets keep it that way. Deregulate the housing market, relax zoning laws and get rid of parking minimums. Incentivize missing middle housing like townhomes and brownstones. Nice low rise dense housing, but not skyscrapers and such. This will keep the house prices low and make sure there is no housing shortages.
So not true lol. Housing costs have quadrupled the last 2 decades. 500k for a 55 year old 1.5 story with major rehab needed in rural county, only crazy people are moving here and over paying, wait until the next crash that puts them all under water.
I live right near Greenville. I can confirm… it’s a VERY nice city in almost every way possible. The industry, recreation, residential, and historical components are all there. Obviously it has it’s flaws, but in general it’s very nice to live in. And the area around Greenville is stunning with the Blue Ridge Mountains nearby. Beautiful treelined streets and nice looking architecture. I would visit there certainly. I've been to Charleston and Columbia but I've always been curious about Greenville.
It's awesome hearing people bragg about my home!. Still , we remember where we came from. This town is completely transformed from what it was before 1980. From 100% textiles to a wonderfully diversified economy. The latest thing is our entry into the automotive industry, much more than just BMW. I'm an optimist,I believe that many of the people coming here will add to the experience in ways that can't be foreseen. It can also be pointed out that all of Greenville Country has risen as well. Most of that has been more recently. The county is narrow and long, running north to south. All of the smaller towns are quite nice and each deserves a look based upon their own merits. As for the other towns, Travelers Rest deserves a special mention. This small town has changed from a "drive through" to a fashionable destinaton.
Born and raised here, born in Greenville memorial, raised in TR. You are 100% correct, we never went down town in my youth, it was best to avoid it. Not anymore, not anymore at all. I was just there today for the jobs fair.
Nick, you won't believe this. We had purchased some land on an airpark in Tennessee, planning to build a house (I'm a pilot and we have a small plane). After seeing this video we also found out that there were problems with medical services in the area where we had purchased the land. In retirement I don't want to provide medical services, but I'll need them. We came upon an airpark property just outside of Greenville, SC. Based on your video, we spent several days there and checked the area out. Upstate South Carolina is really booming. The area encompassing Greenville, Spartanburg and Greer has undergone intelligent development, with new industries moving in and well developed downtown districts. It's a short hop to the Blue Ridge Mountains. We loved the area and our offer (much lower than the asking price) was accepted. Once we move I'll get working on the channel idea. You Rock!

I’ve worked in downtown Greenville for over twenty years and the commute from Easley is quickly becoming a problem , almost as quick as the horns and tempers from drivers. I don’t even go on Woodruff road anymore due to the traffic. Also as a parent good luck getting your child into daycare or child care in the form of afterschool/summer camp with the growing population comes limited spaces and often times substandard care from overcrowding.
My parents just retired to the Greenville area (Lake Keowee) from the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. I’ve spent a few holidays this year in Greenville and it is an outstanding city. I still haven’t found anything besides the traffic to complain about. Greenville is a very impressive city. Great Video!

Im sure there is worse in other cities but i would never say its the best place. Amazon just opened a huge delivery warehouse operation, Ryobi has a few large plants now.
Thank u, u just increased my house value 😂. Greenville is awesome I’ve lived here my whole life and it’s got great weather and beautiful nice areas all around to visit.
Well..Greenville is far from a small town. Im from a town in NC population under 5,000 and one traffic light. The Greenville downtown area is around 70,000 but Greenville County is over half a million people. I have been here for 8 years but grew up in NC so I have been coming to Greenville for decades. I live in Simpsonville. So it has more of a smaller town feel but I'm only 2 exits from Greenville. But it is growing to fast because people keep telling everyone to move here. We do have lots of outdoor space, which I love. We have more than half a dozen state parks within an hours drive and several nature preserves. We have a cute small zoo downtown. We do have a thriving arts scene with the Peace Center which is our PAC. Our restaurant scene is incredible. We are equidistant from Columbia and Charlotte NC. We are 3 hours away from Atlanta as well as the beach. The NC mountains are less that an hour away. Ashville is about an hour. We have a number of incredible destinations that are within a 5 hour drive. Our only negative is 1. Lack of a major music scene. In the summer we have outdoor concerts but those tend to be small bands. We do not have a huge amphitheater for the summer outdoor concerts. You have to head to Atlanta or Charlotte for that. We don't have a lot of bars with live music. We do have an area for shows but again it's on the small size so we are generally overlooked for concerts. And traffic is getting bad. The area with the big boxes he was talking about is Woodruff Rd and traffic is a nightmare. Even where I live it is getting horrible with traffic. Thank goodness my job is off hours. But the pay here is not as great as everyone makes it out to be. Many of the plants only pay around $15 an hour. I do fear it will become another Ashville and will eventually get to expensive to live. The downtown area is already pricey. But if everyone will stop thinking they have to live here..maybe that won't happen.
I agree with the premise that everything is so clean there. I live in metro Atlanta and can't find a park that is not trashed or graffitti laden, but every park I have visited in Greenville is so clean. You really notice that quickly
I’ve lived in Greenville almost 20 years. It’s still a city figuring out what it wants to be. There are the obvious influences from Charlotte, Charleston, and Atlanta trying to make it feel metropolitan. But there’s also the “keep it small” crowd who still hold onto power in local government. Downtown is pretty but a large portion of it is filled up by corporate buildings and banks. There’s no culture and no atmosphere in large chunks of downtown. Other parts of Greenville are just “everywhere USA” with Starbucks, Chipotle’s, and big box retailers. Greenville wasn’t founded around one particular industry or historical landmark so it feels like it’s a metropolitan area starting from scratch.
Greenville is extremely nice, I stayed there for a week after hiking the Appalachian trail. I was interviewed by a reporter and was put on a commercial. Falls park is awesome
Don’t forget bmw is expanding.. I live in Spartanburg and I see A LOT of construction going on now EVERYWHERE I go I see new apartments and houses being build
The best Town in the World and maybe I am biased because I lived here for almost my whole life 50 years. Greenville you made my life Happy and I will always love everything about you!!!
I live in SC and Greenville is one of the best planned cities I’ve ever seen. Parking is plentiful and not a racket. Large events are a breeze. Greenville is definitely on my shortlist of other places to live. Visit the Peace Center and walk through Falls Park. If you’re into BBQ visit Home Team and try their Brisket Sandwich. Dayyum.
Thanks for the video Nick. Been watching your channel since the HomeSnacks days. Me and my fiancee were just discussing moving to Greenville a week ago. This video is very helpful and informative.
Greenville is unfortunately growing because popular influencers idolize it like this. Don’t move to Greenville, he doesn’t mention the homeless population around the city.
Try Bardstown Kentucky - a smaller but beautiful small town with special recognition of it's own for a few years now. Not as large as Greenville but closer to Louisville for an easier visit to the bigger city in less than an hour to about anywhere. Lexington too about an hour away. Bourbon capital of the world & my old Kentucky home are two of the most popular tourist draws.
I moved here in good part due to this video. It is even better than you describe. The suburbs are great in addition to downtown. Between the city and suburbs there is everything you need. You must drive though! Not good if you rely on buses or subways.
Not trying to be negative, but I'm a native here. If you're white and have money, this place would be awesome for you. Not so much for others. Diversity in all aspects could be better as well. That is the cold hard truth.
I was just downtown for the jobs fair, the people are more racially diverse than I have ever seen in my 40 years here. Its not culturally diverse and never will be, only a monoculture survives, multi-culture is a non-sense word and the people eat themselves alive as a result.
Greenville is awesome....from the location just 10 minutes from the mountains, 30-40 minutes from Asheville, NC...4hrs from Myrtle Beach, SC...the restaurants....2hrs away from Atlanta, Ga...1.5hrs from Charlotte, NC...its between two other cities 15minutes east / west, being Spartanburg and Anderson, SC....wonderful job market too.
As a Greenville resident for the last 25 years, I think Greenville, especially if current trends continue, compares more to Asheville, North Carolina than it does to Charleston.
how can there be people who still believe that asheville is bigger and more populated than greenville please adeville is a small town greenville is big they keep it even so because of the city limits greenville has a metropolitan area of 1k du county is on par with all the asheville metropolitan area

Thats a city. To me anyway. My town Columbiana, Ohio got voted Nicest Small Town In America by some really popular magazine, fun fact. Love the vids tho
I used to live in Greenville for around 2 years. It is a great place to live. And Falls Park in downtown is THE BEST. I love that park so much and I go there almost every year. The waterfall is amazing too. There are lots of great places to eat, shop, and hangout too. It really is a good place to live.
Hi Nick, love your videos, especially the one of my Hometown,Greenville South Carolina,So glad you loved it,I moved away 15 years ago,but I want to move back,I visit about once a year to see my Clemson Tigers Play,🧡💜🐅
Now there are going to be a lot of people moving there. So many people moving to SC, pretty soon it's going to bust. I can't figure out what the attraction of heat, humidity and mosquitoes is.
Wish you have a chance to get out of the car and actually show and walk Falls park. That’s is a beautiful park with a suspended bridge, plenty of picnic areas for families, ducks on the reedy river and also connect to the swamp rabbit trail which connects miles of cycling and walking trail around the Greenville area.
Yesssss. Finally people are noticing Greenville. Downtown Greenville is awesome night life is awesome, especially in the summer. It's definitely booming
As a long time viewer of this channel, and a resident of Greenville, SC, I am sorely disappointed in this video. We really don't need more people thinking it's a great place to move to. We already have a population growth of 15% (yep, right there with Austin, TX).
Sounds like they're trying to promote Greenville in the sense they promoted Portland. I am shocked Columbia didn't get that notoriety though.. they got more of an established bigger small kind of city feel than Greenville.
@@MeltinJohn Columbia is a hood if you remove USC. Although Lexington and Irmo are growing Columbia itself needs some cleaning. The crime in the city itself is too high. Nobody goes downtown for that reason.
@@dadejavusc yes you're right most of it is a hood like Tampa FL is. Only more even looks run down. It's just quieter than Tampa where I am now. But ya Columbia had some awesomely nice parts but people weren't too friendly in those areas I didn't think but in the hood otoh people did leave you alone. Walking up to someone and trying to hustle them wasn't as much a thing there like in Trampa.
@@dadejavusc I also heard USC is moving to what's it called. Newberry? So Greenville will have access to it.. I hear that will hurt Columbia. So it looks like I came to Columbia checked it out but I left it behind for a reason too.
Nick you got this right. Greenville, SC is one of the best towns live in and visit! As mentioned in other comments houses are not so affordable anymore. To get a idea of what people in Greenville think about some things you''ll heard from people (if you are from Greenville you may think these are funny): When asking some one where a retail location is "I think there is one down on Woodruff Rd...I avoid that area on Saturdays" "Downtown use to be Horrible!" heard many times could be our city slogan "mayonnaise?...We buy Dukes!" never lived some where where people a so loyal to a mayonnaise brand.
The upstate has so many out of town residents living there now its insane. These two have never been to Greenville clearly. Its comical. He said Charleston was snobby, Jesus guy😂😂😂Greenville is even worse
Michelin has corporate headquarters on I-85, and tire manufacturing plants in Greenville, Anderson, Spartanburg, and Lexington, SC, in addition to Dothan AL and other locations. Their research facility, Michelin America Research Corporation (MARC) is adjacent to the Greenville plant. Their test track is in Laurens County, just south of Greenville.
It was nice to hear someone's opinion that moved here. Of coarse it's only 2 hours to Atlanta and 1.5 hours to charlotte if you take your time. Most of the population lives in the metro area and they can't build houses fast enough here in Simpsonville. There isn't much diversity and the other cultures get pushed aside. At one time the downtown area was left for dead. I remember in the 80's all the businesses moved out. So they made some progress there. There isn't much in the way of mainstream entertainment. You have to travel to Charlotte or Atlanta for that. Also the Area is much too big for a lower single A baseball team! So that should tell you something of how conservative it is. Don't be fooled by downtown size, or the city limits. There are a half a million people in Greenville county.
I'm trying to move in a few months trying to pick Between South Carolina and North Carolina narrowed it down to Charleston ,Columbia ,rock Hill and Greenville. North Carolina Charlotte, Greensboro Do you have any suggestions
@@msdaynotsettlingforless5546 Depends on what you want. Charlotte for diversity and bigger city life. Greenville for more conservative. Charleston for a slower pace southern town but expensive. Colombia not my favorite hot in the summer and more crime in my opinion. Greensboro is booming I heard. Don't know much about Rock Hill, other than it becoming a suburb of Charlotte these days. Besides Charleston, South Carolina is generally cheaper to live than North Carolina. North Carolina has better schools and just a bit more liberal.
Gentrification is what's happening there, its heart heart breaking. I live in NY and the last thing I want to do is leave but the greed of developers is forcing people south which only causes problems for southern residents. Something really has to be done about these greedy developers from other countries causing housing issues for US citizens because that's all that it is. Greenville is beautiful 🌹

Is it still this good in 2024?
Same thing in north San Diego. They are building homes as quickly as possible on the cheap then everything in the home falls apart in 10-15 years.
The construction company is winning lol 🤣
They are losing everything.
You shouldn’t buy a home from a National Builder anywhere! Local builders are not the same as the ones you’re talking about.
Many of you now saying "ok but don't bring your politics with you and ruin our town"
Are the same people that months ago when people were complaining about cost of rent vs. minimum wage, you said "lol just move then if you don't like it!
Now it's trying to be like Atl and Charlotte, without the infrastructure to do so
as a fellow resident (downtown), i competely agree with you and slightly fearful of that
Oh no,publicity. Soon you will be Asheville……
The airport is absolutely beautiful! Happy to see a growing, clean, decent city for a change.
Greenville-Spartanburg Airport is a quick in and out airport. Don't have to be there 2 hrs early. I was impressed with how fast I got through.

As a long term native of Greenville I must disagree with how polite people are.
Thanks for this impressive rundown.
@@loribruce6625 and Michelin has been in the upstate since the 70's.

The city population is around 75k but the metro population is 900k so that's why it's bigger than you think
I lived outside the US been in FL, TX, etc. And there’s nothing like up here so calm, growing lots of opportunities and all the culturally diversity
You'd be a great guest on one of Nick's episodes. You should email him.

Moved to Greenville 5 years ago from Vancouver Washington and seriously love it here! We’re conservative Christians and meet like minded people every where around here.
Happy to hear this as a young Christian

Exaggerate much?

The sprawl is real. And pricey for a single person.
I remember when I was living in Greer in college and everything going crazy. That was the early 00s. Greenville has the benefit of the foothills.

Central/north central Pa is where I would go but I’d rather move south.
@@itsnick37 Western PA seems safe too.
Well SC is a Sun Belt state so its going to attract more people.
Charleston sucks these days. I genuinely used to love this city so much. But the influx has destroyed it's charm.
You don’t like all the transplants, so you are going to become a transplant. Is that correct
Completely false
Oh No. I cant believe you are featuring my city. We are full. Just FYI. I moved here from Chicago back in 1993. I havent left since then. Dont let the secret out! :)
We're probably moving to Greenville from Charleston. Charleston is FULL too. Lol
Right!! Im from Chicago too and love it hear! Its nice hes representing greenville but don't want everyone to know lol
Too late
@@hollybergquist2825 I know. Its good but its bad when all the crazies move down here.
The intro got me lol. Omg I love the scenic view. I want to know how’s the schools there, I’m a teacher I’m tired of NYC. Afraid of the crazy and homelessness people might come to invade. I want real southern cooking.
I was born in Greenville and don’t plan on leaving anytime soon, but we are flooded with many people it’s crazy!
Nice try
Thank you for this. Gentrification is rampant and people just don’t care about the lower income people who are being evicted and priced out of their homes.
It happens again and again, and it seems no place is safe. People come in and ruin the thing that attracted them in the first place.
All of this.
@@rose-co1xz You are most welcome and correct! It's unfortunate how so many care more about greed than those with lower incomes being pushed out.
Greenville has one of the most impressive downtowns in any city I've been to. And nestled right in there is Falls Park, Greenville's version on Central Park, a vibrant centerpiece for the city.
Greenville is growing rapidly. I
Lived there from 2014-2016 and it changed so much in that short time. It’s not quite as southern as you’d think though. A large percentage of the population are from the northeast and Midwest.
I thought it had more of a New England vibe than anything else.
Greenville is absolutely BEAUTIFUL downtown at night!! And that water fall and river with the rocks is so much fun and it's so PRETTY..
The real estate market is beyond unreasonable, and the traffic is Ridiculous.
You should move to Atlanta for a while... then maybe you'll appreciate Greenville.
Gonna have to agree on this one. Did no research before heading there, was very pleasantly surprised.
I wish Americans who have traveled abroad to Europe, specifically to the Netherlands, and decide to team up and create new cities across the US that are pedestrian, bike, and railway-friendly. Why can't we start doing this by removing some of the stringent zoning laws of our states in order for this to happen? Ugh!
Is Greenville like that?
You have to address crime drugs and homeless first. In cities with subways and pedestrian streets, vagrants shit in the subways and take drugs there. Nutcases attack people on subways and pick pocket them. If you have small children you are safe in your car mostly.
Homeless drug people are all over downtown. Stopped going out to dinner downtown because of the issue.
@@sterling557 you know what, you’re kinda right but it’s so sad that you’re right
@@betaylor5031 they are concentrated there because it’s the only walkable area.
And Utah
@@NickJohnson Ayyy you're the man Nick!
It is already too populated, we can't go downtown like we used too few years ago. 😔... And there are plenty of homeless people here, many of these people are homeless because they just can't afford to live here!😞
Also the Appalachian areas of Georgia and the Carolinas are getting "half backs" - people from up north who moved to Florida, hated it and moved halfway back
Yup. Watching drone videos and every road is small. Traffic nightmare.
I love it here and was born and raised here….but the infrastructure can’t handle any more growth. The roads in all the suburbs are still two lanes everywhere even though thousands of homes are being added.
the simple chasing UA-cam views don't understand that charm is deceitful
Check out Maryville, TN too! It’s a small town in the Smokies right outside the National Park!

You Rock!
Medical services is important to me. Greenville has everything going for it for a smaller sized city.
Nick, to quote the movie Sling Blade "I like the way you talk"..... What I mean is you are an excellent narrator. I also enjoy your sense of humor. Say hi to Mappy
Greenville laid the groundwork for its success over 50 years ago. Otherwise it could have become another burnt out mill town.
I was born and raised in Greenville you are right. Used to be a textile town but that industry is mostly gone. But with foresite they have brought in newer industries...3M, GE. Michelin, BMW and many others. Other industrial cities should take notes (hello Flint, Youngstown, East St. Louis)

I’ve worked in downtown Greenville for over twenty years and the commute from Easley is quickly becoming a problem , almost as quick as the horns and tempers from drivers. I don’t even go on Woodruff road anymore due to the traffic. Appreciate the compliments on my home place!! Really don't want more growth. Its already getting over crowded with foot n vehicle traffic. Its perfect the way it is. The past year has been extremely noticable the amount of growth n change. We have our bad areas tht u may not come out of if entered. Most ppl r nice n respectful but we talking a 50/50 chance. The thieving has gotten completely out of control the past couple of years. U cant leave anything out anymore. Tow trailers by the dozen everyday. Ive had 2 trailers stolen, a 2017 Polaris ATV, a 6 month old zero turn. Many many other things. There is alot of bums everywhere u go. U obviously got very lucky on ur trip. Im sure there is worse in other cities but i would never say its the best place. Amazon just opened a huge delivery warehouse operation, Ryobi has a few large plants now.
Drama queen.
Another excellent video Nick

Try Bardstown Kentucky - a smaller but beautiful small town with special recognition of it's own for a few years now. Not as large as Greenville but closer to Louisville for an easier visit to the bigger city in less than an hour to about anywhere. Lexington too about an hour away.

@@cillyt4me Thank you so much
Is this true for the ppl who live there? South Carolina will close state offices on Tuesday to mark Confederate Memorial Day.
I lived in Greenville, SC, for 23 years, from 1996 until 2019. I moved to another state in 2019. I don't miss Greenville at all.
@Mike C if you want to retire come to Anderson. Its a great place for retirement. Lots of country side.
Greenville is nothing compared to
Charlotte NC sightseeing

@@onnow7955 Oh, then I wouldn't handle it well at all.
