You've really stepped up your game on these videos Jade, great job! And nice review on the OP-1. For the record, my OP-1 is still one of my favorite pieces of gear I have in my setup. Not only for sketching out ideas in the studio, but anytime I've performed out live, either with fixed synths (i.e., Moog Sub 37, Arp Odyssey, etc.) or my Eurorack modular, I always bring the OP-1 as a backup in case my other gear fails... and in each performance so far, I HAVE had something go wrong where I had to bust out the OP-1 to save the day! Anyone who says it's" just a toy" has no clue...
Good take on the OP. I just rebought one after a couple years without. The first time I was looking at it from a stand point of a more traditional synth with sequencer and was disappointed. Now I look at all the non-traditional features and its unique flow and embrace it. So great.
Only synth out there that embed a chopper game ! I'd add that you have to really let it show you the way, not to try to find your own marks for appreciating it. At a point, you find shortcuts just because they make sense, all was built with design/UX in mind. It's good for a beginner, because you just learn to trust your ears. It's good for experimented producers, because it's totally different from anything else and you can bring everywhere. It's always in my bag when I'm leaving home. And the community is super sweet.
Synth and sounds aside I think the design of this is pure genius. The interface, menu design and way finding is superb. There’s been some real thought gone into this. To provide so much information in such a restricted viewable space is incredible. As a UX designer I have so much respect for the team of designers who worked on getting this right. The colour coding and graphic simplicity rewrites a lot of the typical synth visual vernacular that’s out there at the moment, and I think that’s why a lot of musicians write this off as a hipster toy.
I bought one a while back but sold after a week and got some other needed synth gear. But I've always lusted after another one as a 'would be nice', think i'm keen to check the OP-Z for the integrated visuals. It never comes across in videos but the OP-1 is so well constructed! Nice overview/discussion and jam too :D
I agree, and you sum up what's cool about this machine really well. It's such a fun piece of gear, and brings out ideas I wouldn't ordinarily have - plus I can toss it in my bag and take it with me to create on the go. I love the "4-track"! I keep trying to sell it and not being able to part with it. It's just too much fun. Do I NEED it? No, probably not. Do I WANT it? HELL YES!
i sold my first one, had it for like two weeks, all i saw was money signs of what else i could buy with it. Never found anything else like it, got one again! ha!
I was very surprised with the build quality of my op-1! In the videos, it looks like it's just some janky plastic thing, but it's actually built like an iPhone. Very precise and beautiful.
Hands down one of my favorite pieces of gear. I was one of those people calling it a hipster synth when it came out, but when you get your hands on it, it blows your mind. Truly inspirational device.
sold it after a couple of months. an expensive, funny toy, but not more for me. i had the op-1, circuit and electribe 2, for me the ultimate portable workstation is the synthstrom audible deluge.
Dawless Jammin' yes, true. i couldn't use one sound element from the op-1 for my tracks, and for jamming it was not really handy with midi over usb and minijack out. but some people get some crazy stuff out of it, respect.
Not exactly "DAW-less", but that's what I can afford for hobby stuff. There is a lot of nice stuff for the iPad with fewer distractions and hangups than a full desktop computer ADD-factory :-)
The only machine that I sold (for reasons that we have all heard before: toy, too basic, etc) and then bought back in a few months because it is the only machine that is portable with such an amazing workflow. OP-1 was released in 2011, with early designs dating back to 2009.
i did the same thing XD i looked at it before and always thought about what else i could buy with that money, then i sold it and soon realized nothing else was like it, and i missed it extremely! Got another one recently and I love itttttt
Thanks for this video! I'm looking at getting one of these, next week, and this video was the assurance I needed. It appears that the OP-1 records stuff the way my brain works, which is great, because it's different from a lot of audio software, which is hard for me to wrap my head around as my brain just doesn't see music that way. Anyway, thanks for the video, awesome stuff.
I love that synth! I would own one today if they had them in stock EVER... But I bought an ipad pro 12.9 (2017), about the same price and has WAY more potential.
This is what I always tell people. If you're interested in the Op-1 and have the money, buy it and give it a try. If you decide it isn't for you that's okay! The op 1 holds its value and you can pretty much get most of your money back :)
Calico yo, even though I haven't tried it and have no idea if it's good or not, not all of us have enough money to spend $800 just to try something out o.O
Great, structured breakdown of all of the OP-1‘s functionality! When I‘m trying to explain what it does I become so euphoric I basically start to show everything at the same time with the effect of having everybody confused. 😂 Check my new OP-1 album. I tried to push the boundaries of this cute machine. You can find a video for one of the tracks of this album on my channel. Cheers and keep it up!
The op1 is my favorite synth. I love my other synths, and even music making apps and vst’s, but when considering size, complete workstation capabilities, ease of use, live use, creative inspiring workflow, and pure enjoyment to work with, nothing else compares as far as I’m concerned.
Just think. Ten synthesizers in one tiny machine for a thousand dollars. To buy ten synthesizers separate would be way more than that. I think I know what I'm saving up for.
Within 3 minutes from the beginning of this video I had a tab open with my bank account and one with Craigslist to sell some of my gear to afford one of these. Great video!! 👾
hi, thank you for the video! i just bought a used op1 and now i`m waiting for it to arrive... What i`m most interested in at the moment is writing chord progressions on the op1... i would love to see more op1 videos on your channel, thank you!
I bought one and it's fun but limiting in some ways! The thing i don't like the most is the lack of integration with other hardware, but as its own tool it's fun. I feel Elektron gear is more usable and i just bought some Moog mother 32 which are so amazing sounding but a totally different thing altogether
Nathan C Yeah I agree, I mostly use it as a small keyboard for my on the go rig, it's a great tool on its own but with other gear I just use it unsynced
In some ways it's fun, but I sold mine because the tape thing got me frustrated, I always messed things up. The synth engines are also pretty limited. It's great as a musical sketch pad, but so it an iPad + small keyboard controller + multiple apps for a fraction of the price.
Looked at this and recommended it to friends and I think it's best as complementary gear in a live setup or for traveling. It has lots of features for sure but two features killed it for me: the machine is mono, and there's no undo. I've seen attractive used offers but I can't fit it in with my gear. If I traveled a lot I would look again at this or one of the battery powered minisynths, but I don't have any of those either :)
I love the op1 one year later still finding new ways of using it. I find it plays well with others any thing that generate sounds i play n record everything to this and use n program synths i started with a 4 track tape n sampler years later im using the Op1 !(the recorder is the key)
Cool .. yea there's a new update out for mpc live and a lot of ppl had a lot of issues they were having especially with crashes fixed . But yea I'm definitely feeling the op1 aswell
Great video, i have a couple audio suggestions for videos of this style. Maybe eq some of the treble and mid out of the backing track and lower the volume a bit. It was difficult to follow your voice over the music
You should make a tutorial for people who don't know anything about the sunrise synthesizer language you are talking about so that someone like myself can get more out of a video like this
I loved my op-1 and will be getting another one at some point. I personally HATE DAW's -- there are WAY too many things that come up that make them more bitchy than productive. Update your system? Broken DAW. Update a driver? Broken DAW. Start to be productive? Facebook... Things like the OP-1 are standalone machines that don't bury you in mindless options like Logic or Ableton. They are real features, not frivolous options and over 9000 synths. I hate it when people say "it's not a 'real' synth", like you have spend 1.5 grand on a Moog or a Dave Smith keyboard, or a Eurorack to have a "real" synth. Can't wait to get my hands on one again! Great review!
John I agree, the DAW isn't where creation should begin, I use mine strictly as a glorified recorder. I love Dawless Jammin' and creating without having to stare at a screen
Your asian string sounds like feeling on your booty by R Kelly. Those bowed and asian string sounds are my favorites too, along with orchestral and choir stuff. Thanks for the video.
Im looking forward to the OPZ if its going to cheaper as some have claimed but they already pushed back the release date that was supposedly going to be Sep. of this year but so far nothing and no word yet.
I wish there was a place to rent one of these for a while. I'd love to try one of these out, but man oh man is it pricey. If you love it, you love it, and it's worth it, but how do you find out if you do without plunking down the cash?!?! 😬
I like the size and instant fun factor but i have a few gripes, the audio output is noisy so u need to send files via usb. Im not payin silly money for a stand alone unit that needs to be tethered. And midi over usb, same shit. Plus the sequencer(s) was a bit wonky, made it hard for drums, and the drums didnt really thump too hard (well aware that the last two could be user error). Love the filters tho, and it has some cool synths
oh my god! you also have the exact same computer I have, except I don't have the OP-1 I just use a Novation Launchkey , But I will get it eventually. but i"m releasing a track with a rubber ducky in it soon, so life's good :D
I dont know if you still are active on this particular video but I had a question. If you can answer great if not thank you for all the useful information you provided. I am a filmmaker with interest in making music for my work to separate myself from the crowd. Ive always had an interest in building my own tracks and stuff and was wondering if you would recommend something like this to use to create my own tracks knowing very little about creating music in general. Id basically be using this to learn how to create music as a starting point. Im the type of person thats all in or nothing so I have no problem if there is some type of learning curve. But really just looking for something that I can use portably that will allow me to create full tracks and really learn how I can bring my own music into my production. Thanks for an awesome video.
Jarred Weskrna Hey! The op1 can definitely do that for you! Just keep in mind it can only handle 4 tracks and the work style focuses on the keyboard, but with the sequencers it's easy for someone with no musical skill to create something cool. Also it's a really fun little device and if you're familiar with a daw you can then import all 4 tracks there to edit further
I find the op-1 really interesting and I would love to own one, but I do not agree what you said about the build quality. I had one in my hands in a store and this thing feels like it will break into pieces when it falls from the table once. I have a 60 euros midi keyboard that feels more solid. I find this really bad for a product of this price.
I was thinking getting one for having it as a patterns or loops player....like having my backing tracks ready in it and just play them...but the non projects thing is a no no no for me
Mariela Band Although it can be used as a drum machine, making mutes and stuff isn't very easy u less planned ahead on the tape.. I would look elsewhere
In 2017 op-1 ruled 2021 The MPC Live 2 blows that lil thing out of the game. It is cool but the same price as the MPC Live 2 and its got endless sounds and 999 tracks with rediclous storage and fully stand alone as well.. although the op-1 is pretty badass and very tiny it's still not as cool as the MPC live 2.
so there is no synchronisation implemented at all? audio-in as click for clock would be technically totally possible, for example, no such thing in the software? or did i get it wrong? cheers and have a nice day!
I'd love to get one of these, but they look really hard to repair (i.e. just a battery change you need to take apart the whole thing) and the PO I have are kinda flimsy in their making... Have you had good experience in getting them repaired/fixed?
hhdhwuus The answer is... No. It's the best bang-for-the-buck of any electronic music gear I've ever bought. But as she says in the video: not for everyone. YMMV. If some of its quirks bug you, than probably yes.
can you suggest other standalone gears like this for dawless jamming? I'd like to have my own OP-1 someday but that's pretty far away in the future, unfortunately. so I'm looking for similar gear (portable, can work on its own) that's cheaper than this. any suggestions? thank you? :)
A Pluve There's lots of affordable grooveboxes but this one is Definitly a bit special. Check back tomorrow, I'll be posting a video on a very affordable little synth!
Really love your videos Jade! My kids wants to get into making music but not on my guitar. Me myself are into punk and industrial and would like to play with a mashine like the OP-1 or MPC live. Which of those two would be the best/easiest for noobs like me and my kids to get the hang of in your opinion? Keep puting up theese videos!
Thanks! Does your kid play keyboard or is into keyboards? cause the OP-1 is a keyboard players dream and the whole workflow is around the keyboard. for a beginner I wouldnt recommend the MPC Live, they'd be better of starting with software if he wants to go that route. The op1 is a solid choice for making whole songs and the synth engines are really good as well! Thanks for watching :)
They like buttons:) I've tried to teach them Cubase, which i worked on since win 3.11, but that aint what they want. They like stuff like Avicii and therefore i thought the mpc would be the thing. When they get the hang of things i dont think that pads or keys are the dealbreaker. Thanks for your opinion.
Hi Jade! Just wondering... connected through usb can I trigger op1 sounds by using the piano roll within the daw or can sound only be triggered by physically pressing the keys on the op1?
the workflow revolves around the keyboard and sequencers, so if you feel your strengths lie in keys then I would say yes, the Digitakt has more of a groovebox workflow and works best with other gear. I like to work on my OP-1 making small loops and then performing or exporting those to make complete songs. both are good machines, depends your needs. Cheers
thanks I have the tempest and TR8 but I am missing that 8 bit organic and eclectic looping , down tempo soundscapes vibe so I think either one would really expand my sound palette
Yes mam In the mail ! Lol....It's an amazing performance machine had Dave only allowed sampling capabilities .....kicks are a little weak with low end that's why I had to get a TR8 to compliment , TR8 is instant Trent it really kicks I was pleasantly surprised
You've really stepped up your game on these videos Jade, great job! And nice review on the OP-1. For the record, my OP-1 is still one of my favorite pieces of gear I have in my setup. Anyone who says it's" just a toy" has no clue...
Genshi Media Group Thanks! And yes, can't wait to jam and gig with my modular and op1! -whoops! Did I just let the cat out of the bag? 😎😂
yeah Jade is great. Really enjoyed her comparison as well on the Digitakt vs MPC Live.
Been getting into eurorack, but my op=1 is still my favorite piece of gear. Its got it all!
Olecranon Rebellion how True! Same is happening to me lol can't bring eurorack on trips !
Nice! I want an OP-1 and Elektron Rytm once funds permit.
I feel like sitting on a 10 hour plane ride with this thing would be amazing.
Tis fun :) as fun as a plane ride can be...
Can never have enough tutorials for this thing because there are so many ways of doing things on it.
Good take on the OP. I just rebought one after a couple years without. The first time I was looking at it from a stand point of a more traditional synth with sequencer and was disappointed.
Now I look at all the non-traditional features and its unique flow and embrace it. So great.
AM Versions I also thought this one 😅
Wheather it's worth it or not, that sleek, compact design draws me in every time I see one.
I love to use it just as a MIDI controller too, the keys feel so nice
I bought one a while back but sold after a week and got some other needed synth gear. But I've always lusted after another one as a 'would be nice', think i'm keen to check the OP-Z for the integrated visuals. It never comes across in videos but the OP-1 is so well constructed!
Nice overview/discussion and jam too :D
brassmonkey yeah, I was surprised by the build the first time I held one, such a fine piece
I agree, and you sum up what's cool about this machine really well. It's such a fun piece of gear, and brings out ideas I wouldn't ordinarily have - plus I can toss it in my bag and take it with me to create on the go. I love the "4-track"! Just ordered mine this week, I've had my eye on it for over a year so NOW is the time.
Hands down one of my favorite pieces of gear. I was one of those people calling it a hipster synth when it came out, but when you get your hands on it, it blows your mind. Truly inspirational device.
Nice 👌🏼 It's worth it ;-)
Thanks! You know you're doing something right when Cuckoo drops a comment :D
Dawless Jammin' aaw, your too nice! Sorry I didn't subscribe earlier!
Honestly guys....for the current price...I really doubt that still worth it
zepafra it is...and will be!
Just got mine a month ago and it's easily worth it. Songs just pour out if it.
sold it after a couple of months. an expensive, funny toy, but not more for me. i had the op-1, circuit and electribe 2, for me the ultimate portable workstation is the synthstrom audible deluge.
nachtaktiv music it's not for everyone. the deluge looks dope!
Dawless Jammin' yes, true. i couldn't use one sound element from the op-1 for my tracks, and for jamming it was not really handy with midi over usb and minijack out. but some people get some crazy stuff out of it, respect.
Deluge is awesome as well, but they don't replace each other for my needs. OP-1 is far more portable-truly portable and playable anywhere.
Yes! Tutorials on the OP-1 please
I love your reviews. You and Bobeats do good reviews. I love watching your reviews on my HD tv lol .
iPad Mini + BeatMaker3 = 420. Sky is the limit !
This is the most comprehensive and clear explanation of this tool I've found. subscribing!
Great jam at the end Jade. Great use of the speed variables on the tape and the arp.
yeah the tape drop was cool :)
I love that synth! I would own one today if they had them in stock EVER... But I bought an ipad pro 12.9 (2017), about the same price and has WAY more potential.

Calico yo, even though I haven't tried it and have no idea if it's good or not, not all of us have enough money to spend $800 just to try something out o.O
Alonso Mancini That's true. I saved up for about 2 months to be able to afford it, and got one used for $640!
Calico You have a good job, you're lucky to be able to afford it.
4:20 "It's my go to Synthesizer when I take trips"
Hear hear...This synth must really be psychedelic ;)
Awesome tune! Had it in my head, now I know where it came from )
Great, structured breakdown of all of the OP-1‘s functionality! When I‘m trying to explain what it does I become so euphoric I basically start to show everything at the same time with the effect of having everybody confused. 😂
Check my new OP-1 album.
Well done! I agree with most of what you're saying, great video!
Love my op-1!!! Most of the music on my channel in made solely with the op! IMHO worth every penny.
Just think. Ten synthesizers in one tiny machine for a thousand dollars. To buy ten synthesizers separate would be way more than that. I think I know what I'm saving up for.
Within 3 minutes from the beginning of this video I had a tab open with my bank account and one with Craigslist to sell some of my gear to afford one of these.

hi, thank you for the video! i just bought a used op1 and now i`m waiting for it to arrive...
What i`m most interested in at the moment is writing chord progressions on the op1... i would love to see more op1 videos on your channel, thank you!
Nice review Jade! You're almost pushin my gas button again. Liked your outro tune as well :)
Very nice review and overview of my favorite piece of electronic gear.
And yes please to tutorials on it.
I'd love to see how you use the OP-1, (maybe in form of tutorials) since everybody uses it differently.

Yes, it's well worth it and the fact that it went up $50 (Sweetwater). Damn, I'm glad I got mine before that happened.

Red means recording 😍
Awesome video (music was a bit distracting at times though), I'm excited for my OP1.
Not for me but it's a top notch device for sure. The FM feature is tempting.
The craziest thing is NO SD CARD to save your work. So NO, not recommended.
Yeah and the memory is very small, but still powerful!
"Those aren't my white hands...promise."
Love it
ET need his finger back to finish that call home. Sooo... I cant decide which companion to grab for my Octatrack - the OP1 , or a Kaossilator. Input?
You should make a tutorial for people who don't know anything about the sunrise synthesizer language you are talking about so that someone like myself can get more out of a video like this

this answered all my questions thx
Hey Jade- love your videos - ever thought of doing an op 1 giveaway or something ;)) +Dawless Jammin'
Lol sure, I'll start doing give aways once i have 2000 Patreons :p
I’m pretty sure it does sync up to external gear. you just need a midi to usb converter box I think.
I never got on with mine. The workflow didn't suit me at all. That said it was fun and very different from my other synths.
I loved it but for playing live while it's sounds awesome it's fragile mine flew across the stage and broke at the mini USB plug devastating!
Such a beautiful machine.
I liked your review , thanX very much. :)
I wish there was a place to rent one of these for a while. I'd love to try one of these out, but man oh man is it pricey. If you love it, you love it, and it's worth it, but how do you find out if you do without plunking down the cash?!?! 😬
I'd love to learn about the drums and also please make lots of tutorials yes ^^
3 years later. Is it still worth it? :D

Also it's a really fun little device and if you're familiar with a daw you can then import all 4 tracks there to edit further
Its the greatest thing... I just wish it was little cheaper
I find the op-1 really interesting and I would love to own one, but I do not agree what you said about the build quality. I had one in my hands in a store and this thing feels like it will break into pieces when it falls from the table once. I have a 60 euros midi keyboard that feels more solid. I find this really bad for a product of this price.
yes
Great video&jam. Thx
mine died in over a year, it just died..period. and try to get support from teenage is well not available and i was out what i paid.
op1 or organelle?
I definitely pay the price for this
Nice video Jade
Great review
I was thinking getting one for having it as a patterns or loops player....like having my backing tracks ready in it and just play them...but the non projects thing is a no no no for me
sp-404 is great at what you're explaining, you won't be able to do that with the 6 min tape on the op1
@@JAdeWii_ Thank you Jade!!!! I was thinking about the digitakt also maybe a combination of se 404 with digitakt will get me there :D
HI jade. Thinking about the OP-1 for live performance as a drum machine. Would it work well for this?
Mariela Band Although it can be used as a drum machine, making mutes and stuff isn't very easy u less planned ahead on the tape.. I would look elsewhere
Thanks!
Great review!!
Most importent for the OP-1 is the FM radio (-:
so there is no synchronisation implemented at all? audio-in as click for clock would be technically totally possible, for example, no such thing in the software? or did i get it wrong? cheers and have a nice day!
Adolf Noise nope, it doesn't sync with ester so gear without a USB to MIDI hub, it does sync with the TE pocket operators though
thx a lot found out about usb midi sync and poˋS which in turn, i think give out a trigger that can be understood from any third party gear?!
I'd love to get one of these, but they look really hard to repair (i.e. just a battery change you need to take apart the whole thing) and the PO I have are kinda flimsy in their making... Have you had good experience in getting them repaired/fixed?
It's really well built, i mean the P.O's are like $50, this is $800 lol it better be good!
True but if they're just building janky stuff they can do it at any price lol
tutorials, yes!!
Is it any good for someone who has no idea what they are doing.
Yes, it has plenty of sequencers that can make composing a breeze
also possible to attach a bigger keyboard so to play more notes at the same time??
Boi Mesa Yes. You can connect a MIDI controller via the USB
does the op mean overpriced?
haha
hhdhwuus The answer is... No. It's the best bang-for-the-buck of any electronic music gear I've ever bought. But as she says in the video: not for everyone. YMMV. If some of its quirks bug you, than probably yes.
Get a better life ya prick
Cool! Digging it
can you run this thing through ableton... I like a lot of the custom sounds people are producing
can you suggest other standalone gears like this for dawless jamming? I'd like to have my own OP-1 someday but that's pretty far away in the future, unfortunately. so I'm looking for similar gear (portable, can work on its own) that's cheaper than this. any suggestions? thank you? :)
A Pluve There's lots of affordable grooveboxes but this one is Definitly a bit special. Check back tomorrow, I'll be posting a video on a very affordable little synth!
Dawless Jammin' ooohhh thank you so much! will be waiting for it :)
Try teenage engineerings OP-12 ($59) and you can mess around with a pretty cool beat computer/sequencer
Novation circuit, electribe 2, electribe 2 sampler. Give em a look
Take a look at the Korg Volca Keys, Volca FM... etc.
Janne Lamminluoto check out the novation circuit or Korg electribe 2, I think those are great affordable options to get your feet wet.
I will, thanks.
yes do something tutorials I'm interested in this
The (new) ? is: is it still worth it with the hefty price increase??
Hi Jade! Just wondering... connected through usb can I trigger op1 sounds by using the piano roll within the daw or can sound only be triggered by physically pressing the keys on the op1?
I haven't tried it with a DAW, but I have tried it with an external MIDI keyboard, so I would say yes.
do you think the workflow is better than electron digitakt for getting results on the fly?
the workflow revolves around the keyboard and sequencers, so if you feel your strengths lie in keys then I would say yes, the Digitakt has more of a groovebox workflow and works best with other gear.
Send over that Tempest tho! lol That's on my list for sure, such a sick drum machine!
Yes mam In the mail ! Lol....It's an amazing performance machine had Dave only allowed sampling capabilities .....kicks are a little weak with low end that's why I had to get a TR8 to compliment , TR8 is instant Trent it really kicks I was pleasantly surprised
Do you think its better than the MPC live?
xESPplayer500x MOC live is way more capable, but this is a nice little instrument which doubles as a 4 track recorder
I wish this thing had a SD slot.
mpc live or op1 ?
Great video I'm definitely most interested in the op1 than I was before thanks for the video
arent these tutorials done already?
