Easy TRICK to Make GUITARS Sound BIGGER in a Mix
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- Today's metal guitar tone lesson is about getting distorted 6, 7 and 8 string guitars to sound bigger in a mix for djent, metalcore, deathcore and hardcore music. When mixing, amp sims, eqs, compressors, and saturation can be your best friend, but getting the tone right in BEFORE plugins is super important. Check out my favorite new technique for sharp amp sim tone.
I'm Brendon Padjasek of the band Structures from Toronto, Canada and welcome to my channel based on modern metal, djent, and deathcore music, production, mixing and song writing.

Let me know if any of you had any luck with this technique, as well as any issues you may still have with guitar tones for future videos. Thanks for watching!
This technique is cool but I feel like the no cab sim could have been louder. How do you choose how loud or subtle to go?
Definitely could have been louder. I did end up going 2 db on the final mix. But mixed with the amp volume technique from last episode, I didn’t feel like I needed it to be super prominent. Just a bit makes a world of difference imo.
Especially using the open back headphones, I can hear quite a difference. But obviously use it as loud as you need to
Hey Brendon. I actually wasn't blown away by the no cab trick. It made it thicker, but also muddier. I had a similar opinion of the decapitator. I just didn't like the tone much. I was more impressed with your quad guitar setup and how you had them mixed. I think that's just my personal preferences showing through though. I'll give all of it a try, but I'm most eager to try the quad mix you used. I'm a fellow youtuber, so I'm stoked to see your channel grow and I subbed to the channel. Maybe in the future you could do a video on getting a good lead tone for metal with good clarity.
Thanks for the honesty Eric! It’s definitely a case to case technique and I find it works great for me when I’m trying to do desthcore and nasty sounding music but I probably wouldn’t try it on more prog/ note driven music. But maybe I would haha. Also depends on how loud you have the layer. That’s why mine are barely noticeable but sitting at like -20db
I could definitely do a lead tone video in the future.
And I often quad rhythms for an entire song. That way there’s lots of flexibility and strength in the rhythms
massive tone and a big high five for the hat 🐒
Hahaha thank you so much. Blender is my second life
Big fan of this, sounds huge. I take a kind of similar approach where I’ll use my orange amp for thick mids, a 5150 or fortin sim for tight big bass and then a 5150 with a boss MT2 type pedal for the nasty high end
Thank you! That’s exactly what I used to do when reamping actual amps back in the day before amp sims got so good. I think Putney’s was the first that was actually amp like
Which Orange amp are you using ? And actual amps or sims ?
Those riffs are sick..
Haha thanks Leo! I have a lot of fun writing them and it’s nice to use the Carvin again as I’ve mostly been on my custom guitar the past few episodes
omfg this tips changes a LOT for my mixing. thank you. arigato gozaimasu.
I’m so happy to hear that. It changed A Lot in my mixing as well so I figured I’d share it
Which amp sim are you liking it on?
Also, pretty slick technique. In-riff-neato
Haha thanks Patrick! It definitely goes a long way in making the guitars punch imo
Wow I never thought about trying this, so sick
Hey thanks for checking it out! I personally love this technique and use it all the time now.
Which amp have you tried it with?
i use a boost in front of my amphead to get thicker sound from my guitar and then multitrack the guitar. alot of music listeners dont realize some metal tracks have multiple guitar tracks to thicken the tone up
Yeah exactly. On my 8 metal guitar tricks video I go over how I often quad guitars
Once u figure this out , it makes the guitar sound so good in a mix.
Absolutely love your videos dude! Have been following you since early Structures and you've been a huge inspiration writing wise, and now mixing. Cheers from Waterloo!
Thank you so much for checking out the videos and for the kind words.
Glad to help! Are there any topics to do with writing or mixing that you’re struggling with?
@Brendon K Padjasek absolutely any time!! Honestly, my biggest thing has been stacking layers in tracks to compliment low tuned guitars. I typically write with Orchestral components, but I don't fully understand sound design with synths, so I find I shy away from using them. I enjoy the way Wage War's newest album approaches it a lot as a reference!
Yeah that’s tough. I mostly remove low and high end from my synth and orchestral layers and use them for mid range. Maybe I’ll do a video on that as well at some point soon
@@BrendonKPadjasek wicked! A video on mixing additional layers could be cool, or one on how you go about building/picking sounds to layer!
Awesome. I already filmed that and should be coming out later this week or next week !
That no cab trick sounds great ! I'll definitely try it, thank you for sharing your knowledge man 🙏
No problem my man! I absolutely love this trick and I’m stoked you find it cool. Interested to see how you use it in your next jams
I forget which amp sims you use
@@BrendonKPadjasek Nameless suite is the one I use the most :)
Interesting. I can never seem to get it to sound right for anything other than heavy chugs. What’s your technique with it?
Came for the knowledge, subbed for the pig. This is solid gold dude !🤘
Haha hell yeah thanks for tuning in and thanks for subscribing.
If there’s anything specific you’d like me to cover let me know. Always like to help whenever I can
Job well done. Cheers from STE
Thanks so much STE. Hopefully it helps
Absolute king !
Ehhh thank you! I hope this trick works well for you, if not at least with the Quad trick you have no chance of going wrong haha
Did you use one of those Tricks on the Divided by Album? Is still listen to that album today and Im still blown away how gnarly and still defined the guitars (actually the whole Mix is gnarly and defined lol) and there is no other record that has that vibe. Even other will putney albums from that era. Maybe the first UABB a biiiit but then also not really lol
@@raffji2791 I'm not too sure to be completely honest. I know we used a blend of 3 amps to get the rhythm tone for each side and if I remember correctly we quaded the breakdowns and choruses.
I learned A LOT from recording with Will Putney on DB as well as LTAW and his assistant Randy.
Divided by is where I started really paying attention to recording guitars tightly, and breaking them up by sections within a riff
This is neato. For a while I've been using a send with heavy saturation to try and add body and grit but this works a treat. I dig your channel I hope you stick at it. I've found heaps of valuable content. Discovered you via the algorithm 🙌 dropped a bunch of likes, hope it helps 🤘
That’s always amazing to hear. Thank you so much and I’m always glad to hear that what helps me helps others.
Which saturator did you use on the sends before? That’s exactly what I did too haha
@@BrendonKPadjasek I used Plugin Alliance's Black Box HG-2MS. It's not the dirtiest saturation plugin but I like the midrange boost I get when it's the right situation. I also use FF Saturn sometimes.
Hell yeah I use both of those plugins. The black Box is my mix mud saturator usually. As well as my synth bus saturator. And saturn I often find sweet on drums
Do you have the plug in alliance subscription?
@@BrendonKPadjasek I don't have the PA sub but I have collected a few of their better plugins when they are on sale. I primarily use black box on my mix bus, especially since I got Saturn. I would be keen to see a breakdown of your mix / master chain. Your mixes sound unreal.
Thank you my man! It’s funny I was going to do a video about why my mixes don’t sound as good in ableton as other DAWs. I’m happy with the way they turn out but I find I can make them 10% Better in pro tools every time. I also used PA Indent on my kick and snare (sickkkkkk saturator)
Maybe one day I’ll do a protools video
Which DAW are you on?
Nice! Very cool trick, will definitely try later, decapitator is one of the coolest plugins ever! Did you edit the guitar manually? This seems a loooot of work. But nice work!
Yes, decapitator is my favourite plugin haha and devil lox but they have their own use cases. Yes, edited and recorded myself. Check out my video on recording guitars to see how I did it. I learned the technique when recording with Will Putney for 2 Structures albums
After years of doing this with bass, i never once thought to do it with guitar. Fucking genius
Thank you haha! I’ve only been doing it with bass and guitar for the past few months so you beat me to the punch. I LOVE it in bass i forgot to include that portion it in this video.
Which amp sims are you using for bass and guitar ?
What I have a problem with is writing good songs. Lol 😂
Haha I have a couple videos on improving riffs and drums, I can keep making song writing videos as well
@@BrendonKPadjasek I've seen those multiple times already. That would be great.
@michaelj.anderson1116 will do! Haha
Nice
Thanks! stoked you found it useful! I use it all the time ow
Oh snap sick stuff dude! Just stumbled on your channel, gonna sub. And nice Blender hat! Edit: I thought your name sounded familiar and tunes reminded me of structures ;)
Hahaha thanks for checking the stuff out and I’m glad you liked the video!
Do you use blender as well?
@@BrendonKPadjasekYou got a new super fan bro, didn't know your channel existed or I would've subbed way long ago. Started listening to AOTA in 2010! Huge influence on me and my bands!
And yeah I shoot music videos too and dove into Blender a few years ago. So hard to get started but now I've got a pretty good grasp on it. What do you use it for??
Haha that’s amazing man that you so much. I appreciate it!
I mostly use it for 3D modelling and for random video jobs and there. I also use it for pre pro for a shoot so I can design the set before a video shoot
@@BrendonKPadjasek ooh very cool, I've not used it in that pre-pro sense but I dig it!
Yeah man it was definitely handy. Other than that I just enjoy watching tutorials and trying stuff out. Ian Hubert’s Patreon is awesome
New motel in flames sounds 🌶🔥💃
Lmfao dude! First band ever haha that’s hilarious
@Brendon K Padjasek hahaha so croosh. But actually, croosh riffage. Love your stuff man! Super informative and digestible channel! Keep at it! Haha. Oh man. We used to rip supernova El Mocambo gigs at the ripe age of 15-16 together. I fronted my shitty band called crime of the century at that time. Then we changed our named to To our glorious dead. Then Towers *awkward* Structures came out after you joined charity's and samavarchian left. What is time.. We played a couple giggaroonis together like scenefest together, same stage. (I was in Partycat) as well as the Cornwall ETID date back in 2013. Spent the last 6 years in a band called Conversation. Now taking on music on my own with some things in the vault marinating.. But been cutting my teeth the last several years on and off with bedroom studio production! So this stuff really helps man. Appreciate the work you put in! Love the STL stuff too! Also have the will Putney and Middleton tonality packs. Looking forward to tinkering with the controlhub stuff as well!
Haha crazy man. I definitely remember Towers and To Our Glorious Dead and Party Cat. What a time to be alive. I remember local shows were sold out back in the day. Not anymore haha.
Crazy what kind of music are you working on now ?
@Brendon K Padjasek absolutely. Share the same sentiments sometimes, but seems to be doing a bit better these days post-pandemic! Oh man. A whole mess of material lol. I always push and thrive to write a broad range of stuff! Some hv/progressive/ambient, some bluesy/rocknroll stuff, chill ambient stuff to spastic seizurecore. 💫 Bit'a everything. Excited to take on the adventure of releasing ep's of my own stuff! Every so often just release a cohesive box/ep of random music. Kinda going for mirroring Ben Sharp from Cloudkicker or Nick Depirro a bit, but more genre-crossing. Long game, self-sufficiency, without depending on anyone. Sole focus is writing and releasing and that's gonna be it these days. My own timeline, without waiting and edging for years. Collabing sometimes too would be cool. Been an itch to scratch for car too long haha. Although, I definitely need to sharpen my mixing and editing skills a bit haha. Would like to do that as I write, buuut just might get impatient enough to outsource all my stems and drum building to someone and do it the old fashioned way for the first one! 💃
Cars are cool too.
Gonna try this rn
Amazing. Let me know if you like the results. I find it helpful overall, just remember that you won't need as much treble on your amp sim. I choose to go subtle with it but feel free to go extreme haha
@@BrendonKPadjasek Yeah this is awesome. Tried it out on a couple different songs and tweaked my tone to fit the method. It really adds some stank to the mix haha thanks for sharing it
No problem ! I’m sure glad it would. And stank is the best word to describe it haha. For years when I’d hear pro mixes and compare it to mine they always lacked a certain saturation. And this definitely gets you a lot closer
Which amp sim are you using for your main and no cab option?
Right now Im using Gojira for my main and Fortin for the no cab. Messing around with Gojira for the no cab but Fortin really gives that nasty grindy saturation to the no cab guitars
Yeah that’s awesome. It’s crazy how much of a difference, different amp sims give even with the cab turned off haha. I love the Fortin for that
How do you like the Gojira sim? I was considering getting it
I will try this out as soon as I can. Because my guitars always sound to fluffy and don‘t stand out in the mix.
Hmm which amp sim do you use? There could be a few reasons for that. I have a few videos on getting the most out of amp sims
@@BrendonKPadjasek I am using the Free Amp Sim from ML Sound Lab. The Amped Roots. I watched a ton of your videos now, and they are really helpful. I was seeing the trick with preamping after the interface, I think this could help.
I was using also the STL Tones Emmissary with an IR, but it sounded the same
Interesting. It’s cool what you can get from free plugins now a days.
And sick! Definitely try that out. It’s basically like adding another preamp pedal before the amp. Which interface are you on?
@@BrendonKPadjasek Focusrite Scarlett
Oh yeah I often use that trick when mixing Scarlett guitars haha
What track is making that kinda slow swooshing back and forth noise? It almost sound like a slow turntable scratch, its very cool
Thank you! It’s my Sequential Pro 3 synth. I used it on the bride of the song and then the intro felt like I was lacking. Copy paste and bam haha. I love synths
Jeezus christ dude those riffs sound FAT. Love doing this technique too.
Hahaha thank you so much. I love the chuggy verse even though it’s so simple. Just hits the way I wanted.
Yeah there’s nothing quite like this technique
When you say you add the "no cab technique" is that a 5th and 6th layer to the guitar or is that in-turn your quad tracks?
That would be a 5th and 6th layer. Sometimes (for the past UA-cam songs) I don’t quad and just do the layer trick. But I still believe quad tracking is the way to go for the wall of sound
@@BrendonKPadjasek Thank you so very much!
@RazeOurTyrants_ no problem!
I truly just can’t get the no can trick to work. I don’t have monitors so maybe it’s just my Mac speakers, but when i try to blend it with my main tone, it just sounds like static on top of my guitars. Sad.
Interesting. They’re meant to be very very quiet. I usually have the fader at like -20db. Also they may be out of phase with your guitar tracks. Try flipping the phase!
Is everything in 4/4
I think so. I don’t often go outside of 4/4 or 3/4. I just like to mess with meters
how do i get that tone with my shitty DIs
which amp sim and guitar do you have?
90 seconds in, I had to stop.... if you know, you know... if you don't know... move on to another/more reputable content creator on this particular subject.
Fair enough !
sounds awesome, i dunno what your talking about
Thank you! Hope it works out for you in your music creation. Which amp sims are you on?
