I totally agree! Now I don’t have to go buy a drill, jigsaw etc lol. Once I’ve cracked the smaller pelmets I’ll go on to the more complex ones! Maybe… 😂
I love cornices & think they are too classic to ever be out of style!!! I spent a good sum of $ on them & custom drapes for living rm but want them for my family room. THANK YOU so much for doing this tutorial on a budget friendly way to create cornices....just what I needed to know!!!
Thank you!!! I've had this idea for my kitchen since I first moved in but couldn't work out how to do the sides!!! I also really appreciate that you get straight to it & your instructions are so clear & easy to follow! Very much appreciated!!!
Thank you so much for this awesome DIY tutorial. I love how well you presented the information and I am grateful you also have the info typed out- I love to Reference written instructions after I watch the video when I am doing a new craft. Thank you so very much for this awesome share!!!
Absolutely LOVE this! Looks fantastic but also simple to make. I’m a complete novice but you have given me the confidence that I’ll be able to do this. Thanks so much! I’m going to check out your other stuff now as I’m sure you have tons more I can use! ❤
You Have a great UA-cam presents. You talk well you have a good time to your voice. It’s enjoyable to listen to you you have a nice cadence. It’s kind of like having a teacher that you like to listen to lol. Very enjoyable thank you for making the video
I just made a 6ft cornice using your formula! It is gorgeous and it weighs 3 lbs! I love it. I'm in a rental and it is great, no fuss and cheap. One thing you should point out is you have to use a light cotton fabric, otherwise it's too heavy. Thank you
I so glad you made one! These are great for rentals. Good point on the light fabric, you are correct a heavy fabric would not work with these. Enjoy and thanks for watching!
I'm new to your channel I been wanting to make one and didn't know how to started and you made it easy for me to do and understand. Thank you .Great job.
Wish someone would have replied to your query. I'm wondering the same thing. I guess I would reinforce with a piece of the foam core board across the middle seam and tape securely with white duct tape.
you can get huge foam boards at hobby lobby. the largest size they have is 40"x60". If you need it wider you can piece it together with duct tape and reinforce the connection with another piece of foam board on the inside. make sure there's enough width of your reinforcement piece so that it provides enough support and keeps the connection rigid.
AWESOME ..Just the simple process and valance project I was looking to make🤫. I am definitely a foam board girl..OMG.😃 Now this shows exactly how to create it perfectly. Blessings to you. 💕
I'm going to try this on a patio door and will need to make it 77" long. I'm a little worried because of the size. So I'm hoping this technique will work. Wish me luck.
Hooray! I love this! I'm on my way to buy some foam board, Lord knows I've got fabric 'o plenty! Thank you so much for your great instructions, I can't wait to start💚1¢
Great video. I have a house so I would take your instructions and change the foam board to 1x8’s or larger. Or use 1” thick insulation board! They come in 4’ x 8 ‘. ! Thank you for the concept.
Sara, I cannot thank you enough for this post. I need to do a cornice board across my bathtub because unfortunately when the owners of the apartment put in the shower rod they put it in low so the distance between that rod holding the shower curtain and the actual ceiling is way too large. The only way to fix it is to add a cornice board and then put tension rods behind it with your valance and your curtains hanging down. That would make the whole thing balance out. I love what you did and it occurred to me that it was easily adaptable because you could basically create it the same way except instead for putting your command hooks on the end where it snugs the wall instead of the back. Now you would have to make another support piece at the top so that the command thing can go into the ceiling but it is so absolutely light that I don’t believe it would be an issue. My other thing is that I bought really good black core foam core board that looks awesome and like wood and I’m going to trim it out so I don’t even have to actually cover mine. Anyway I wanted to tell you how grateful I am because I went out looking and I found your video and it is such a straightforward design, it could be used in a multitude of ways. So thank you so much for putting this up and I’m sorry this is so long! Have a great day!
Love it! I would add hot glue to the command strip on the cornice too! Any advice on a longer cornice! I'm guessing duct tape pieces of board together.
Extra hot glue always helps! The cornices shown at the beginning and end of this video, the colorful ones, are 2 pieces of foam board duct taped together. Those windows are a little bit bigger. They have held up really well and you can't tell they are pieced together.
I would measure for the placement of the cornice on the wall. If you get it wrong the first time, you can't reattach the cornice. If making a longer cornice, I would double the thickness of the foam core board for two reasons. 1. to give the cornice the stiffness it would need to span a long distance. 2. Since the longer length requires a way to strengthen the two pieces used to extend the length, having another two pieces on the back would be convenient. Just be sure the joints don't fall in the same spot. I would also double up the side pieces too.
Hi this looks EXACTLY what I need for my Bedroom. Can I ask two questions please? One is how do I extend and fix as I need a lot wider fitting. The next ? Is will it work encorporating 3 separate Fabrics? One colour centre and the other on the two from centre block to outer ends? Would you use a glue gun to add these then maybe some form of trim to hide the joins? Can the trim be added with the glue gun also? Sorry for all the questions but I've worked really hard on the Bedroom Makeover. One is for the window the other for over the bed. Many Thanks 😊
Here's my tips. You can make this pretty big, you just have to join the foam together in the middle, I used duct tape. But a brace of some sort on the back is a good idea. A piece that will hold it against the wall in the middle so it doesn't fall. Consider using a piece of foam to attach to the cornice and the wall in the middle. And I would definitely use a glue gun to attach the trim. Good luck with your projects!
@@SarahVanderkooy thank you so much for your reply and tips. I’ll take them on board. I’ll do as you’ve suggested. I bit off more than I could handle but fingers crossed it all comes off well.
what if you want to do a large window, like above a slding glass door? what do you do then with a larger window? foam board doesn't come that large, yes? suggestions?
Correct it doesn't come that long. You would need to attach a few pieces together. I actually did that with this one, I just used duct tape to attach them before adding fabric. But you should also add a brace or 2 in the middle. Just use an extra piece of foam between the cornice and the wall to help it stay in place.
You would need a brace in the middle. Try creating one with a piece of foam board attached to the back middle that can attach to the wall. This should support a longer board.
You can attach multiple pieces of foam board together with tape. If the window is large you should add a support in the middle, another piece of foam board that attaches to the wall to keep it from bending in the middle.
It looks like your walls are textured or “orange peel”. If so, did the valance stay up over time, with just command strips? Thanks for the great tutorial!
Yes, my walls have a lot of texture. The command strips stick really well for this purpose. In general I have an issue if I try to use those strips with too much weight, but these valances are so light it works.
Apply rubbing alcohol to the wall before using a Command strip! It works wonders, and is safe to do on freshly painted walls and helps adhere to textured walls. Our entire house is decorated thanks to Command strips, even heavy art.
You can cut additional strips of craft board to make up the desired length, then add duct tape to secure the pieces together. Then you can continue as shown.
This was the best and easiest cornice board tutorial out of all 50,000 that I’ve seen on UA-cam! Thank you!
I am so glad to hear that, you are very welcome!
I totally agree! Now I don’t have to go buy a drill, jigsaw etc lol. Once I’ve cracked the smaller pelmets I’ll go on to the more complex ones! Maybe… 😂
Very helpful and easy. I would recommend ironing the fabric first to avoid the center crease.
Wow! Your cornice making design is the best and least challenging of all those I’ve seen here on UA-cam. Very grateful. Thanks so much.
OMG!! Thank You! I now feel like this is a "NO PROBLEM" I am looking forward to start on this first thing in the Morning!! Keep up the GREAT work!

What do you do for a larger window? How do attach 2 or 3 pieces in width?
Wish someone would have replied to your query. I'm wondering the same thing. I guess I would reinforce with a piece of the foam core board across the middle seam and tape securely with white duct tape.
Go to home Depot and buy the poly iso foam sheets. They come in 4'x8' sheets and are high R insulated

Hi would you recommend this method for a long pelmet approx 3metres long.
Thank goodness I'm not the only one that mixes up my words lol.. "gray splue" aka "spray glue"! 😁⚘

They make thicker foam board for that matter.
How do you calculate how much fabric you will need? I have a very long cornice and I don't want to buy too much fabric.
That was great! Thanks 😊
OH WOW thank you!!!

thank you Sarah for sharing this
Does foamboard come any bigger for bigger window or can u join in centre. Thanks
I would join 2 pieces together. Use something to brace the back like a paint stick and duct tape the pieces together.
My window is about 86 inches long. I afraid if I put them together to make it that long It won’t stay. Any suggestions
These are great! I would totally do the same thing in my kids room! ❤️
How would you attach more than one board if you need longer than 28 inches?
You would need a brace in the middle. Try creating one with a piece of foam board attached to the back middle that can attach to the wall. This should support a longer board.
Great video! How do you make for a larger window over the 28” foam board?
You can attach multiple pieces of foam board together with tape. If the window is large you should add a support in the middle, another piece of foam board that attaches to the wall to keep it from bending in the middle.
I am going to try this for our sliding glass door.

I pieced it together.

I like ordering from Joann, they have a great online store as well as in person and you can order by the yard.

I didn't see the link for the adhesive spray I don't really want to buy any kind in it don't work so your recommendations are
I love this one, I'll add the link to the description too. Thanks! amzn.to/3H03bRA
I am wanting to make this for my bedroom window but the window is 84 inches wide, what is best way to make it that size?
You can cut additional strips of craft board to make up the desired length, then add duct tape to secure the pieces together. Then you can continue as shown.
WHAT IF YOU NEED A BIGGER CORNICE 106" FOR EXAMPLE??
You can attach a few pieces of foam board to make this larger. However, I would add braces in the middle so the cornice doesn't sag.
👍👍
