Oh boy, when people watch this movie for the first time and say "why would they hurt the puppy" they find out very quickly why. I've lost count how many times I've watched this over the last 40 years, and the practical effects are still awesome today. Sadly this bombed at the box office on release in 1982, I think at least partly because it arrived around the time ET was in cinemas. I guess the audience wanted cute aliens, not one that will eat your face :)
28:32. It was the '80s. NOBODY was safe in a story... not even the dogs. If anything, the "animal cruelty" aspect to 80s horror movies became such an issue that later horror makers simply allowed the animals to escape when afraid, or kinda hinted at something might have happened to to them without showing it. You still had the animal cuteness aspect, but without having people complain about what happened to the "puppies". :)
I LOVE animals but honestly it makes it more horrifying when animals get hurt, like watching a child get hurt. Truly fear invoking and really makes you hate this creature. Also you just gotta remember no animals were actually harmed in the making of the film.
Greatest horror movie ever. You take 10 or more people, isolate them and where it takes forever for help to arrive and cut all communication ties. Then give them a monster that's hard to defeat and then make them question their own loyalty and who's who. Then ended on a cliffhanger. Perfect 🤘♥️
just imagine being locked in a room with a bunch of huge big hairy beer stomach's like this one that want to bite your arms off.....then you would be having a bad day.
One of the few horror movies that had my stomach churn the first time I saw it. Also the dog in the beginning was actually the star of the Movie Whitefang named Jed. He plays as the wolfdog in that movie and if I'm not mistaken he was actually a wolfdog in reality.
You should watch John Carpenter's Prince Of Darkness. Not nearly as good as The Thing of course, but nevertheless its a great movie and very underappreciated and underrated in my opinion.
Great video reaction Grave Cinema. Here are my thoughts. 1. The practical effects for 1982 were awesome. 2. Blair was one of my favorite characters. 3. Both Kurt Russell & this male reactor are quite sexy. 4. This female reactor sure likes to cuss. 😀😀
Sorry, I hate leaving multiple comments.... But just confused on what she meant by the music being a dead giveaway. Thinking back to every transformation or exposing of an assimilation, it was actually completely devoid of music..... Norris defib scene, was just the constant flatline ring and nothing else. Dogtown was no music, just dogs starting to growl. Palmer blood test had no music whatsoever. Same with Blair. I think it's actually genius to have minimal scoring on this movie....
My favourite horror film. Based on the 1938 novel 'Who Goes There?' Written by John W. Campbell Jr. It was first adapted as a film in 1951 (which is pretty good for the time). The 2011 prequel gets a lot of hate, but i like it despite the fact the studio decided to make the terrible decision to replace all the practical effects with CGI.
Edit: Apparently, I made a big mistake and the alien pov wasn't in the Campbell short story. The alien pov was in another short Based Off the Campbell story. Many Apologies for the error. Thank you, 69coolchris, for the heads up. You are indeed cool. I like how the [other] story gives the alien's point of view, and how it's thinking it wants to help humans achieve some kind of oneness -- like a hive mind. And in doing so, we'll be better off. So, The Thing is actually trying to help us. But, we simply don't see it that way
@@69coolchris Really? Dang it. I must've read the other as well and mis-remembered the part when the alien thought about why it was doing what it was doing. I remember the end with the blowtorch, the new tech, the blue sun thing, and how McReady saw it. And I thought the part where it was confused as to why it was being attacked was around there. I'll have to check it again. Thank you So Much for letting me know about my error. I really appreciate it. I'll have to go back and correct my postS. Yeah, I wrote this in two other threads. D'oh
I've seen this well over 300 times, one of my top five. I have to say though, the ONLY thing better than a React video is a React video where ONE of the people doing the watching is sitting next to the other - who has no idea of what's about to go down. I can almost HEAR the evil giggling (Compliment!) Great vid here! :)
Must watch the other classic by John Carpenter "Starman". 29:27 Thanks for the shot out to practical effects over CGI. Still baffling that the prequel producers went CGI knowing full well that everyone wanted to see practical in homage to the original.
i would like to highly recommend the following classic movies: Phantoms (1998) From Hell (2001) Red Planet (2000) The Blob (1988) Color out of Space (2019) The Void (2017) Rubikon (2020) Angel's Heart (1987) The Colony (2013) Altered States (1980) Last Days on Mars (2013)
Everyone says the same thing... why are you shooting the dog? I love dogs too, but the movie is a horror flick called 'The Thing' why do you think they're shooting at it? 🤣🤣 ya I fall asleep to this too when I've seen it many many times.. but how can you sleep to it on the first take?? lol I'm kidding; great reaction!!
I enjoyed watching your reaction. a few times, the cuts could have used a connection, but, then, that's easy for me to say. I've never filmed, or more importantly edited, a reaction. Good choice of movie! This is one of my favorites. If you're doing old horror, you might consider reacting to Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho," the grandfather of horror films and still quite effective. Anyway, see you next time.
I've already showed her "Psycho" before I started to film her reactions. "Psycho" is a classic! I do try to keep the reactions to the movies in context as much as I can when editing too.
Oh and a common mistake about the Doggo, is that it's actually not a Husky at all.... It's a half Wolf, half Malamute hybrid mixed breed. Such a cool combo. Not to say you were wrong for thinking it was a Husky, as I'm pretty sure everyone thinks that when first seeing it, myself included. Cheers!!
Where are the Penguins? Oh, about 400 miles away, at the coast and antarctic Peninsula. Believe it or not, Antarctica had zero land predators and it's biggest land animal is a wingless midge(?)(i think that's what it's called) that only lives for about a week for it's adult life. Talk about getting dealt a bad hand, lmao. The South Pole is an incredibly hostile and barren ice desert.
"It's us two weirdos again" "I don't know what the hell's in there but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is" Perfect. P.S. Everyone starts off rooting for the dog, like John Carpenter's bitch.
I can also recommend horror anthologies, especially out of the 80s and 90s. They have a mix of stories, and most of them even have practical effects, so you still get an 80's vibe, even when they were in the 90s. CGI only started maturing as a regular inclusion in horror movies after 2000. :/
@@thedeegee1601 yes it is, I loved how they tied up the two movies from the start, but the effects weren't there and the character development wasn't there. I didn't get invested in the characters in the prequel like I did with J.C. movie.
It never fails: “Awww, what a sweet looking doggo…OH MY GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!”
It always starts this way "ooo puppy!!" And then it ends with "KILL IT!! KILL IT!!!"

This is a brilliant movie one of the all time best horror films along with the Exorcist.
"Why are they trying to kill the puppy?!" A question answered roughly 15 to 20 minutes into the movie and no one ever likes the answer.
A dog was shown the kennel thing scene
The dog was barking before the dog even transformed
It already knew it was a monster

I highly recommend Alien and Aliens! Some of the best sci fi/horror films ever!
See I think this is the scariest film because of the concept. Can't think of anything more frightening lol
Except being trapped in space with a xenomorph
