    Apple! One of the hardest woods you can get in the UK. When I'm pruning my orchard, larger limbs take some work. Hawthorn and blackthorn are good seconds.

    Thanks for this. Haven’t had one for nearly forty years. This saves me money to see if I’m still capable of drawing one. Smashed my left forearm and wrist since then. So yeah cheers mate.

    John! Love the videos and catapults! After watching your video a few months ago I went and harvested a nice "scrub oak" fork on a live tree. It seemed a bit "moist" so I set the fork in a closet to dry. A month later, I had the itch to work on it, and I noticed that there were small cracks forming at each of the 3 ends. My question is: Once those cracks form... is the fork now firewood and useless as a catapult? Question 2: How could I have avoided the cracks? Cheers!

    • @p8iy7ushn
      @p8iy7ushn 7 років тому +3

      I've had the same experience with cracks. Been trying different ways but this is what I'll do next:
      1) cut them longer than I need
      2) strip the bark and ideally rough out while the wood's green, dip all three ends in latex paint or melted wax (wax seems better) then leave for a couple months
      3) shave off the hardened exterior wood, finish carving if you want, leave for another month or two
      4) remove wax, sand, oil
      The idea of dipping is to slow otherwise very quick evaporation from the ends. I saw people suggest it elsewhere and it's working for me. I don't have a microwave, but I tried the oven and got splits. Using holly, birch and some unknown forks.
      Looking to learn and help others, not telling people how to do anything.

    I like to get my forks from fallen pieces that aren’t totally dead yet, preferably after it has set for 2-3 weeks. but I instead take it to the oven after stripping the bark and put em in the oven for 3 hours at 225 degrees Fahrenheit.
    For me I find this makes the wood a little stronger
