    I love the tip on using old lamps instead of buying new lamp kits. Thanks for that!

    Thanks for this video. This is exactly what I was thinking about today. Making lamps out of whatever. I am also interested in creating a shop here at home and make good use of my garage space.

    I bought a 1956 Chevy Tail Light for $3 at a junk store. At the local Goodwill, I found a banana hanger (not sure what it's called) for $1. The hole for the screw on the tail light fit perfectly over the hook on the banana hanger. Finally, I put a cheap night lite clip into the hole made for the original bulb. Way COOL desk lamp. Total cost: $8. I sold it for $65.

    1:18 That was a ceremonial lamp from the Yuan dynasty. The only one left in the world apparently. I just looked up the price. 153 billion pounds was the reserve auction price. Never mind - an easy mistake to make.

    OMG I love you! lol I am very frustrated with the lack of lighting options out there and the ridiculous prices for some of them, so I thought (at 3 AM while I can't sleep) that maybe making my own was the way to go. The 1st two taught me basic wiring, but this one sold me on going for it! Thank you!

    • @timsway
      @timsway  7 років тому +2

      cheers Amy! It's a lot of fun and the wiring is simple. Just inspect it carefully and take your time! (and also know I am not a licensed electrician and not responsible if your curtains catch fire! :)

      I will need my handyman to help lift/install whatever I make (it's for my kitchen ceiling) so I'll leave the shocks to him!

    This is so crafty! I love these! Idea for any lamp bodies you don't break: My wife makes bird baths by stacking them together with a shallow platter for the basin. She gets all the stuff at the secondhand store really cheap! Plus, she makes a mosaic for the inside of the batch by gluing and grouting in broken pieces.

    • @timsway
      @timsway  8 років тому +2

      +Steve Ramsey thanks steve. bird bath is a good idea. mosaics were what i was thinking about when i smashed that. maybe i'll do a video. it'll be a learning experience as i've never done that.

    you could take the left over pieces of ceramic, clay or glass , smash them up into smaller pieces and glue those pieces to the outside of lamps that you create.

    ok! 6:52 mark and I'm hooked! Love the creative and manageable time/tool/cost to put them together. Quick Q- "I'm a property investor and starting to put together AirBnB cottages with unique things but I don't want it to look like unmatched trash.... Are there consistent items or themes that you are always searching for at garage/estate sales that look like great finished for matching wall lighting?" I'm in Michigan so any type of country rustic/wood grain/old industrial farm-auto usually peaks the interest of people.

    • @timsway

    I made one from a old copper fire extinguisher I picked up at a junk store that was pretty cool and it was cheap. The "lamp kit" came from my neighborhood bulk trash pick up. Free from the curb. I score all kinds of stuff for projects like that.

    First, awesome video! And sometimes those ceramic looking lamp 'bottoms'(?) are actually just painted glass and make cool hanging lampshades themselves! I took a light blue one that looks a lot like your white one (about a minute in) painted it black over the blue and then sanded scratched and wire brush dabbed off spots then wired the light into it and it shines out looking like a cool night skyish thingy! Anyway again, thanks for this great spot!

    This is a second video that I found. I did not realize it was the same artist that I saw building a table, which it was beautiful. I he a hard time throwing pieces of wood as well, and as well bamboo pieces, I saved an exterior light fixture just like the one in the video, I am taking your idea and building one, I thought what a great creative idea. I have copper bolts that I am going to use for the dining table, I do not have steel or metal to attach like you did. I save every little thing that I can, it becomes part of a piece of art. I am subscribing; off to find other videos of yours!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    Omg how fun! Cheaper than my quilting hobby 😂 I found this because I have a crystal lamp base from my grandmothers estate, And it needs to be turned into a lamp and I don’t even know how to put a basic lamp kit from Home Depot together so I’m pretty sure at this point I don’t need to hire someone else to do it don’t blame me if I watch all of your videos to try to find the very first basic one of “stick this here; don’t stick this there” LOL... good job! This week I wanted to try turning old motorcycle helmets into lamps. The unfortunate thing about motorcycle helmets (even very expensive ones) is their impact foam degrades. Most industry standards recommend replacing a helmet after about 5 years of use. My uncle gave me his Shoei Neotec when I started riding, a helmet which I love, but has unfortunately reached the 5 year cut-off so I want to turn it into a unique gift that he can still enjoy.

Actually I just started my own channel called Artfully Rogue and I posted a reclaimed wood stove video today that I ended up making the other day. Once I have a few more videos I figured I'd try and boost more. I did some reclaimed ceiling lights out of some old wood beams I found which turned out pretty cool. I love the lamps !! I've been wanting to do this for years but never really had the nerve! Here in the UK you can't buy second hand electrical goods from charity shops anymore due to relatively new regulations. To make and sell lamps I think I have to get a qualification or get someone to assess them and give them some sort of pass certificate. A real chore, and of course it would make the price increase! No matter, you have inspired me, I'm gonna try and work out a way, I really enjoy your video's, keep up the good work !

      there's really not a lot to it. two wires, make sure they don't touch, then whatever hardware you need to secure the bulb to the base. you might need to group together threaded tubes to run the cord through, or you might need to add some weight to the bottom... I avoid shopping Amazon but here's a link for reference to a generic one, and there are companies making fancier things, too. www.amazon.com/Creative-Hobbies-ML3-12S-Complete-Instructions/dp/B00SXF2AC0/ref=asc_df_B00SXF2AC0/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198058458227&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7738357749722205096&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003364&hvtargid=pla-320493069585&psc=1

    The remains of the lamps should be shipped over to Finland so the Hydraulic Press Channel can deal with them.

    Great stuff, it is kind of funny that this lamp video came out now. Last weekend was the city wide yard sales around here and I can not even count how many old lamps were in free piles. I looked at a few but controlled myself because I have too much stuff for my up coming move, lol.

    What to do with the discarded lamp bodies after you’ve taken out the “lamp kit”: Flower pots. Not all of them are easy to convert to flower pots, but some are.

    For those remnants, glue a vessel on top like a sugar bowl. People are into apothecary jars

    Similar to Peter Browns "dip it" series, you should do a "lamp it" series, where people send you ideas and you see if you can turn that item into a lamp. It would be a massive hit haha
