    120 ml cups are usually used for "Kaffee und Kuchen" (coffee and cake), the German equivalent of tea time. Often on sundays get-togethers, an assortment of cakes, a thermos of coffee, and these small delicate porcelain cups are brought out and enjoyed in good company. Drinking multiple smaller cups allows to stretch out the experience more, since the coffee would cool more quickly in a big mug than in the thermos.

    The 120ml volume seems to be something that comes from the older generations. Both my own grandparents, and my wife's grandparents drink coffee from ridiculously small cups, and generally when I see older cups and saucers, the cups are really small. All of these grand parents are in the 70-90 age group. So it might have been customary a long time ago, but some time during the 70's and 80' it seems that people shifted towards bigger cups. All of these grandparents also like their coffee scalding hot, and the tiny cup size definitely makes it easier to drink your entire coffee while it's hot, and then refill your cup with more hot coffee from the coffeepot.

    • @nettack
      @nettack 2 роки тому +8

      I believe this derives back from a time when coffee was an absolute luxury. I remember my grandparents telling me that back in the 40s it wasn't bought by the pound, but the gram and 100g bags were the norm (and expensive).
      They also drank a lot of coffee substitute made from chicory (which was also common in the German Democratic Republic up to the 80s) called Muckefuck.

    • @heinzotto1194

My grandmother had a moccamaster from 81 and it still works perfectly (and saddly my aunt inherited it). Buy fresh beans (not more than 3 weeks since roasted), a quality grinder, grind coffee according to brew method for optimal extraction, buy a gram scale, use about 60 grams of ground coffee for every liter of water (for starters), and make sure the brew process is between 4-8 minutes long at a temperature between 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • @eindbaas
      @eindbaas 5 років тому +9

      Start by deciding on filter or espresso. Don't get a blade grinder, they are pretty much useless (no control). The best value devices imo are either Aeropress or a Moka pot, but as I like to drink filter coffee at home I also have a Moccamaster. And yes, don't buy coffee in the supermarket as Don is saying.

      key is to find a method you enjoy taste off as each of them will produce different style of coffee. If you're dissatisfied with your coffee. I feel like you should start of by exploring the styles of brewing.

    • @gblan
      @gblan 4 роки тому +1

      Save up a few hundos until you can buy a grinder that will produce a consistent espresso grind, say the 4-500 dollar range. Get a drip machine that heats to the proper brew temp, roughly 194-205 degrees. A Bonavita will work well. Other inexpensive methods will work well also, presspot, moka pot, pourover. Choose a method, or all of them and enjoy. You bought a top quality grinder to start with and now can grind for any brew method. When the day arrives that you're ready to make the espresso plunge you will already have the all important grinder covered.

    When I was a kid in the Netherlands, you could get a Technivorm at a discount with coupons cut out of the packaging of Douwe Egberts coffee and their tea (branded “pickwick”). Dutch people love that sort of thing and as a result both cookie tins full of DE coupons and Technivorm coffee makers were absolutely ubiquitous. I was surprised to learn they’re considered such a premium brand but they do make good coffee…

    Hello, James:
    In this video you asked; "Do you drink 120 mils?"
    I'm an American so I assumed you meant milliliters, which equals 4 ounces or barely more.
    That's half a cup to me, & just so you know, I usually drink over 12 cups of coffee a day.
    I like coffee, I've looked into growing coffee, which should be possible at my latitude [31° N, +].
    I'm waiting to hear from the professor that started the first coffee 'plantation' in the continental U.S., he's supposed to be starting some plants for me, so hopefully, soon I'll be growing my own.

    Hey! 😅 I actually started to reduce my coffee drinking and my way of doing that is to use small cups. I tend to use a cup which is a bit over 100 ml. 😁 Less volume, more quality.
    I kind of like to bring back the old cup size, because to me it is a way to appreciate coffee and show the value of coffee. Coffee is not a fuel, it is a pleasure. 🙂

    I've actually considered getting the version that brews into the thermal carafe. I appreciate the appearance with the function defining the form with no extra plastic case to hide anything. There are times when I'm happy to mess with the process of making coffee, but first thing in the morning is not that time. I want a good cup of coffee without a lot of bother. By all accounts these do exactly that. The temperature is controlled, the flow rate is good, it uses a cone filter which I've always found makes better coffee. For all the digital crap on some other modern machines. I don't think they necessarily make better coffee.

    What a fantastic aesthetic! I love the simplicity of older machines in general. They may not do as much...but sometimes, that's ok.

    I almost comment something about you not showing the brewing process off that beautiful coffee maker, but then it showed up as bonus!
    Very nice video James..

    I drink 120-150 ml cups! We have the V60 Insulated Carafe. When I brew 600 grams of coffee on the nose, my girlfriend and I have enough coffee for 5 cups. This is assisted by some particularly small Victor mugs with a green rim. Works for us because we always get hot coffee out of the carafe!

    Hi James! I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and LOVE IT! You have inspired me to UP my coffee game (on many levels)... Your voice, footage, editing is top notch - Everything about this channel is so pleasant! Anyways. It would be fantastic to see your tips on getting the best coffee from the Moccamaster 741. Best Wishes from Sweden - I hope you'll have a great day!

    Love it! I sense there's a whole channel to be made on an antique coffee machines, their history and use. Please consider more retro machine reviews if not outright historical reviews. For example I'd love to see a review of the first espresso machine in the UK, which was in use at the Exposition of London in 1871, according to one of my coffee table books.

    I wish I had seen this when it was available for purchase. We have my great grandmother's house as a summer house. It was renovated in the 60s, and just about nothing has changed since. This would have been a perfect coffee machine to use there.

    This is the exact colour our kitchen was before we repainted it last year. It would have fit perfectly in the 70s vibe, which was why we repainted the whole thing.

    Yah, that is a pretty cool retro design. I had Bonavita BV1900 for a few years and the thermobloc heater slowed way down. Bit the bullet and ordered Technivorm KBG741 AO and am immensely happy with its performance & more importantly, flavor! I know it may outlast me. Talk to us about proper maintenance. I use great water & have Durgol and citric acid on hand.

      About proper maintenance:
      -DON'T use acidic cleaners, it reacts with the copper coils internally.
      -Durgol and clean drip are the methods to go.

    the small cup markings on US coffee pots are an artifact. Watch old tv shows from the 60s and you'll see them drinking from tiny cups which was the norm. They remind me of tea cups. The modern 12 / 16 / 20 oz cups grew to be the norm over recent decades.

    I'm kind of obsessed with anything mid-20th century, I even own more than one pink polyester shirt. This is a beautiful machine and I can see myself drinking coffee from it...while defiantly wearing a pink polyester shirt with a giant collar.

    Although this is a 4 year old video, I need to protest. Who needs a 120ml cup? Well, I do and I'm not the only one. Café au lait, Melange, Milchkaffee are 120ml coffee + 120ml milk. These are essential for my sunday morning breakfast/brunch or even afternoon treat.

    The design & the color of it, it's Vintage. I like vintage thing, especially when they reproduce it for people who want a little piece of history just like you said. It might be good for someone who live alone in small room who focus on work and a cute functional room decoration i might say =)

    Just started viewing your channel and really enjoy watching. I am a coffee (wannabe) connoisseur and for me I love this coffee brewer. I think it would look great in our mid-century modern kitchen. If we had one of course. Keep up the good feeds. 😎
