Literally can't think of a topic that GCN hasn't covered . Love you guys!
... or any topic they haven't covered twice, really. This specific one? Three times, as of now. But great content, either way!
Call me nostalgic, but i still prefer the video's featuring Matt...
That tip of setting up in a doorway is a really great hack. Less than 30 minutes in and I'm rolling on the rollers playing about with the hand positions and an occasional nudge on the shoulder by the door frame. Thanks lads.
Just bought a roller a few mins ago. Thanks GCN for the tipss!! GCN no. 1!
It now feels like Hank and Travolta (whatever happened to that nickname btw?) have been on GCN forever.
Great stuff.
I think the most important 3 tips, two of which you covered and you covered all 3 in an older GCN vid. 1 relax and don't grip the bars too tight. 2 look at a point in front while learning and 3. keep pressure on the pedals like riding a velodrome.
My favorite way to train is using the Elite QM rollers. After the first 10 minutes of anxious attempts, settled in with the RELAXed grip. Also, setting up next to a wall is preferable to me as it gives you the ability to flick an elbow out to maintain balance. Finally, using Zwift or any other video source, remember to "look away" from the screen during turns or your natural tendency to "lean into" the curve will throw you off.
Love it. Been rollering for years and it's amazing. Great video btw. I can only ever do it with old school toeclips without the strap though...nasty fall once with my clip on pedals. I am very clumsy though. Thanks again lads for all your work and tips 👍
Great work lads, entertaining and informative.
One of your best!
Man you guys are awesome! I just brought a set of rollers they scare the hell out of me lol..
I've been considering getting one of these lately but wasn't sure about a few things. This is exactly why I'm subscribed to you guys. Thanks for the awesome content!
Thanks Aaron! Keep watching 😉
Great SKILLZ lads.. rock n roll.. ers both of ya!
4:39 Olie's cameo was great..😅😅
I love bike rollers, I ride on roller everyday in quarantine
I love my rollers all year round :)
Very nice!!!!
Nice work squadron.
Great video! I’d love to see Chris v Hank Rollers Skills HORSE!
When I was i n the US Navy I would ride rollers at sea. Great work out you would have to to get use to the rolling of the ship as it rides though the waves.
Only officers got to do cool stuff like that while out to sea
@@Vences5 no way we had a cycling team CTI (Cycle Touring International) we all was enlisted.. Our ship was home ported in Yokosuka Japan.
6ft8incyclist that sounds awesome, I take it back, wasn’t into cycling when I served. Served out of Atsugi and the GW, one of our officers had a trainer on board.
@@Vences5 I was Stationed in Atsugi also 1987 1990. Great riding was some of the best, in Japan..
I can already ride the rollers, I don't understand why I end up watching even the most usel as of gcn's posts, like their 700th bike wash video😂
I'm looking for a winter/lockdown cardio plan that doesnt take up too much space. So glad I watched this! I'd definitely end up wiping out in my garage 😹 Any recommendations/ thoughts on the type that just lifts/engages the rear wheel and keeps bike a bit steady? Else I'll have to work on taming that skipping rope haha
Genuinely enjoyed this video and learned a lot about rollers. I reckon it would be better if you wore more casual cycling gear these indoor demonstrations. Christ, that ending was impressive
Even without extra resistance you get a good workout on rollers because you have to work at balance so your core muscles are involved as well.
Once you get the hang of it, it tames far less core work to balance so its really only a good workout for cadence work
Thanks
If you want to learn how to ride in as straight a line as you can, ride on rollers. I can ride in a line that is about 9 cm's at the widest. Some people can ride in a line the width of their tires. The only problem with rollers is that their isn't much resistance, so, I ride in the highest gear possible and use that as my resistance..
Tip: double rollers on front and back wheels and the middle of the rollers is indented sloped to their centers so that both wheels fall to the center naturally. That is my home roller system.
Sloped to the centers or raised?
Be good if you guys did some videos for training on these can do some ruthless sessions on them
If you have a power meter, Trainer Road and rollers go very well together.
You tricked me into it... Its extremely exhausting... But really fun. :)
Excellent product, use it about 4 times a week, 5 miles at a time
This is ex what I need to do my biking indoors as the weather in NYC gets colder !!!!
Your neighbours will love you for it
Check that the front wheel is directly over the front roller if you want an easy life. Most rollers are adjustable for length.
Can I use rollers on my 29er to train on it? Were on quarantine for one or two months
Rollers are literally an essential for any racing cyclist !
Hello Sir .. Watching from: Philppines im #AHMIRMTB . Nice bike roller .. Thank you Godbless 👍
Years ago i trained on rollers. The ones I had were made of wood and were not very smooth. I always used a doorway. I still have my Schwinn Paramount that I bought in 1973. It is hanging on the wall beside of me now.
You guys should do a review on the rollers that have adjustable resistance settings. The best of both worlds, rollers and trainers all in one.
They just did. The rollers they are using have adjustable resistance. I know this because I rode these rollers all winter.
They still give lousy resistance relative to a fluid trainer
You guys crack me up! Now try it on a fixed gear bike where you can’t freewheel!
Fixed on rollers is my workout when I can't get the velodrome.
I enjoy my basic (Tacx) rollers. Now, I have a dilemma! Upgrade to some posh rollers, or get a fixie.
@@trickied7310 I would probably get better rollers than a fixed gear.
rollers is much easier on fixed because you have to keep pedalling and eveything just feel smore direct, especially high cadence
Hi guys, i’ve been massively using a roller this winter. Currently i am doing hiit intervals of cadence, alternating 90+rpm with 30 seconds 130+ rpm. Thing is i got a flat tyre on the last two sessions and don’t really figure out why. Tube is slashed on the sides, like cut in multiple places by a knife. Any advice? Thanks so much.
Highly highly recommend learning without clipless. I use a set of platform pedals for rollers its way better.
Anyone know if you need smooth road tires for rollers or can you use with any tires?
Great job GCN. After 40 years of riding the rollers I appreciate how they smooth out my pedal stroke! After watching some of your videos I am left wondering if that ( a smooth pedal stroke) is a needed skill or not? Using my power meter it seems that I top out at around 400+ watts on the rollers, highest gear, fast cadence. So, they are not a power development tool. Balance, steady state training, even pedal stroke, the rollers are the tool for that!
Friendly Farm, Machinery & Tool,Cp. Bell Try 2.5” Kreitler Rollers. If those don’t provide enough resistance add the Kreitler Killer Headwind accessory. You will not be able to overpower it. Chris Hoy couldn’t overpower it. At least not for very long.
I have a Kreitler with the Headwind accessory. Once you get up to about 3/4 of your power output, it becomes difficult to remain stable. Rollers really develop the core!
@@loopie007, I always wondered if those high end rollers were worth the price. I am on my 3rd set of cheapo's. I would probably be better off purchasing one set of "good" ones. Thanks for the tip!
@Presta chuck I have the Kreitlers. They give lousy resistance and the headwind accessory is intolerably noisy.
Just got my first set of rollers and took to them like a duck to water, bit nerve racking the first time on them but by the third ride i was flying
Can I use Tie down Is cranking straps to the rollers maybe that will work better for me ??
Fixie on rollers video please
Don’t have a turbo. So, enjoy trying the GCN workouts on the rollers 😊
You and me both! :) What's fun is when my little girl gets on her rollers at my side (we built a bracket to hold her handlebars straight so she won't tumble) and 'races' me during workout sessions.
Just got a set. I’ll never be this good lol
What traning can do on rollers ?
Great, so roller reviews next, right?
Guys I don't know what you did to that Quick Motion roller, but it's supposed to roll forward and back a bit as you ride. Your's doesn't move. If it did, you would have a much more stable ride when standing up. Is that why you didn't show us any out of the saddle efforts? The floating motion is a game changer on rollers.
I learned to ride rollers the winter after I bought my first real bike. The owner of the LBS, Dave PIckering of CycleWerks in Bowling Green Ohio, let a few of us try his out.Nothing like them.
Rollers require a better sense of balance and pedaling smoothness then riding on the road.
Learning to ride rollers is a significant milestone that says that you have made it past the beginner stage.
How do you get on without help/support?
1:52 "eh, how can he refuse my assistance?!"
What about a fixie on rollers??
For you at home: while attempting to ride the rollers, put your helmet on.
Use a step ladder for extra security - ua-cam.com/video/N9iUJv_alfY/v-deo.html
I just ride in the hallway...If things get out of control I just lean on one of the walls....And I use an old phone book to step up on the bike...
I just need to master using my rollers without my knee hurting...wtf...cycling on the road...no problem. Did a couple 30min sessions on rollers and had no issues but then I tried to go an hour and there goes my left (dominant) knee.
I love my elite mag rollers, but they are a hassle to carry around to races. The feedback sports rollers pack up nicely.
How’s the noise on that elite roller compared to other rollers?
minimal and not unlike wheels on pavement
Are they mountain bike suite for long rides
Mountain bikes are suited for long rides, you just go slower. You have to pick a comfortable saddle and tires suited for the terrain you are going to travel. If travelling with luggage (bikepacking), better use a hardtail mtb (it's hard, although not impossible, to fit a heavy duty rack on a double suspension)
The skills was the best part. lol.
My dad had a set of rollers that he kept and used in the garage for years. The difference is the rollers were completely flat - not wider on the ends - so it always freaked me out that it seemed way too easy to slip off the sides. Have never tried them. But seeing these new rollers, they don't look quite as scary.
Does using rollers help improve your overall bike handling/stability skill? Would seem like it would at least help you be able to improve your balance and ability to keep a straighter line.
Evan MacDougall the edges will make no difference. Yes, rollers do improve balance on bike and ability to cycle straight line without swerves.
@@trick700 Seems like the ends of the rollers being lipped would provide at least minimal help to keep you from rolling off the sides. But definitely seems like good training for better balance. Thanks!
Evan MacDougall no, because your body weight momentum will tip you off as tyres catch the edge. Just need to concentrate, and look ahead. Rollers help develop core strength as well as fitness
@@trick700 No it won't. I have lips on mine and sometimes when I start spacing out on the rollers they keep me from riding off the side.
@@DrPleishner I have actually dozed off while doing a soft recovery ride and ridden off the side. Nothing like waking up and finding your crashing. Actually, not a big deal as you can see from the video. Once the front wheel hits the floor, you stop.
This video would have helped me 6 months ago 😂
Should I buy a trainer or a roller? I want to use it for training and not just cooling down or warming up.
Elite Quick Motion rollers can give You resistance up to 750W, only sprints with watage bazooka around 1000W are impossible :)
You don't need added resistance to train. High cadence intervals of all types develops smoothness, confidence and aero capacity. Then do weight sessions for strength. Also (FOR TRAINED PROFESSIONALS ONLY), after your roller session use the optional six pack cool down device.
Very nice video Guys! I’m very attract to buy a rollers...can you arrange a video with some training exercise on rollers??? Thanks!
Davide Nidoli For the first month, you will likely be so focused on learning to be stable and still that workouts won’t even enter your mind. 30 minutes on the rollers will leave you so wiped out you will feel as if you have just completed a 2 1/2 hour interval session on the trainer. But you will have used your core so much more. Once you’ve mastered riding on them smoothly, you will have to learn to ride standing as if climbing, then eventually standing sprints. Then you will be able to do all of the same workouts that you could do on your trainer. Hint, when you are new, try warming up for about five to ten minutes on your stationary trainer to get the blood flowing well, then fold that puppy up and get onto the rollers.
I have enough problems with pedal drills on my kinetic road machine wheel on trainer.. too old and stubborn to try rollers.
started on rollers at 64 - never too old to have fun - and these are really fun!
Is getting on onto the roller without the help a wall or anything a pro skill
When I teach people to ride rollers the first time I get them to go no hands........the worst thing people do, is try to steer!
You sure its easier to ride with your hands on the flat part of the handlebars near the center when your just a novice rider? Surely you have more control if your on the brake hoods?
Do rollers wear your tires faster like a rear wheel trainer would?
Nope. They actually cause less wear than a dumb trainer or outside. :-)
@@loopie007 Why?
Does their hair stay perfect on the road
Always wanted to try one, just cant afford it LOL!
Check eBay. Sometimes you can find some real good deals! I bought a set for my daughter for only 60USD. CyclOps set where the only issue is one of the latch pins was missing. I bent a piece of metal to make a new one for free using a hammer and my vice in my garage.
@@WendsH wow that sure is a good deal!, I'll try checking eBay or maybe a DIY roller would be enough for my budget, thanks btw
First time rollers, can’t get started without going over the rollers
you are missing videos from the training playlist ????
I always get really sweaty while riding indoors. No wind and it's so warm.
Fans are essential!
@@gcn gotta be some powerful fans though, I just use a normal one atm but that doesn't help that much. And realistic wind is a bit overkill xD
@@Ramon314 fan, on high, and open a window or two
^ This.
Get a carpet drying fan. They are the best. Shop the used market as they typically never wear out.
Does Zwift give any kind of "credit" for being on rollers?
how do i get off :(
First
oi you lot, where is Emma P. It would seem she is gone on walkabout or something lately, havent seen or heard her in ages.
Emma announced on Twitter recently that she has left GCN to focus on her engineering career for a bit. Sorry to see her go, she was excellent. Best of luck to her.
Thanks for that Michael, cheers from Canader eh
Here's another take on this "Easier Rollers" - step ladder is great tool and best friend - ua-cam.com/video/N9iUJv_alfY/v-deo.html
Can you use this while singing hime hime?
Probably yes!
Try it on a Track bike/fixie then😂
I hear people saying they eat your tires. What are people's experiences with them?
Its no more than normal road wear.
Rollers don't eat your tires any more (and in the case of roads where I'm at, significantly less) than the asphalt.
They will eat your body for breakfast when you stop paying attention, lose your balance and eat your workout area's floor, though. :)
Nope. They are very smooth and there is no tire wear.
@@WendsHI cant wait!
I always veer to the right when I try to pedal with my eyes closed.
Now, can ride the rollers no handed and eat a bowl of pasta at the same time?
Has anyone tried a unicycle on rollers?
Took me about 30 seconds to go hands free but still nowhere close to riding no-handed on one leg
Nice one
Matt Stevens' video was funier tho :d
Get over it already
@@prestachuck2867 I'm not being sour about him leaving
Just some cheecky banter mate
Calm down
Have a nice day :)
What's the best way to set up the distance between the rollers versus the distance between your wheels?
A straight line between your dropouts is correct for the distance between the front roller and the distance between the rear two. I have my rear rollers about 10 inches (25 cm) apart from each other though I have never heard of a "correct" distance for this. It (the 10 inch separation) seems to work fine for me!
I tried with my pro BMX bike but got scared
Why dont you just remove front roller, and ride with front wheel stabilized
Adamir Ado because some rollers naturally have movement in them. So if you had your front wheel fixed and your back wheel moving the natural rocking motion of the roller frame would be forcing and pushing on your front wheel.
Why did Chris call Hank “James”? 🤔
Mark Smith because his name is James. His nickname is Hank.
@@lokie1964 yep I know, it was a joke 👍
To serious, Iona!
No such thing as bad weather, only insufficient clothing, too small tires on your bike and too high air pressure. -Mike Coglione 4 season 365/24/7 rider in snow, wind, rain or shine. That is true until Mike's wife wanted to join him. She is interested in training but not Crazy like Mike. So Mr Coglione is looking for alternatives that aren't pricey or a Peloton to exploit her enthusiasm so when she joins him riding this year as the weather improves he is not going to have to get off and walk his bike to avoid risk of leaving her behind.

Washing your bike while riding on rollers???
You can't do an intro to rollers without talking about setting the length of the rollers correctly - this is critical and something beginners often get wrong. I don't understand why you would repeat a video that you did in 2016 that includes this?
I feel like orbea have upped the sponsorship money recently
1:55 you skip from standing over the rollers to be totally clipped in. That's not a difficult step, but bad editing by GCN.
미세먼지때문에 로라나 타야한다니....
Easiest gear and cadence below 40 rpm - that's tough!
Safety first guys; where's the helmet?
why dnt they just add a triangle to the back zone to steady the back of the bike, honestly how stupid does a co. have to be
DynamicSines Records/ Music The whole purpose of roller training is not for the device to stabilize your bike, it is for you to use your core to stabilize the bike, fine tune your balance, and improve your technique. Don’t even bother with the parabolic rollers. Just get the flattest, most true rollers you can find, and jump into the deep end. No need to reinforce your weaknesses. Kreitlers are still the best.
Brilliant, then hook a motor up to the cranks and relax on the sofa while you watch it go.
