💯 again and again I hear in these recordings a large collective of individuals who are self-motivated to put themself in the service of co-creating a beautiful and powerful "whole". Everyone gets their space, everyone is able and willing to switch roles as needed from foreground and lead to background and follow. Remarkable thing to behold.
Me faltan palabras: extraordinaria cantata, excepcional concierto. Coro, solistas, director...Gracias. Una vez la oí en Leipzip, en Santo Tomás, pero sin la calidad de este concierto. ¡Bach estaría maravillado!
There have been many great performances by the Bachstiftung, but I find that this is as near to perfection as one can come. In addition to the superlative singing by soloists and choir, I would also single out the amazing traverso playing (M. Buffardin, or whoever Bach had available would be proud for the world's vanities to be portrayed this effectively). As this cantata fully utilizes the chorale melody even in arias and recitatives, the continuo playing must be mentioned, as well as the superlative quality of the large Italian style harpsichord. Wow, what a difference it makes to have first-rate instruments as well as players and singers. It's to be hoped that the audience of wise elders becomes augmented over time with members as young as many of the players and singers! This is as good as it gets, and should be heard and marvelled at by all. Kindermann, the librettist (and Bach) ask: "What do I ask of the world?" "Performances on this level" might be an appropriate answer!
FYI I'm reasonably confident the correct translation of "Was frag ich nach der Welt?" is more along the lines of "What am I doing demanding (anything) of this world?" or "Why am I asking (anything) if this world?" Or "What is the world to me?" Or "Why do I fret about this world?"
Thank you so much for the English subtitles! I know enough German to get the meaning, and I love the performances, but this makes the experience more immediate.
Delightful! Such grace, such dignity, such perfection! Yet, so humble each one, though a master in his/her own right. When I listen I am in a hallowed presence.
The text of the tenor aria includes an interesting description: “[the world] burrows to gather mere yellow excrement, just like a mole in the ground, leaving Heaven unattended.”
21:48 Der Geiger hinten kommt mir hier vor als würde er gerade einen Hauch einer bisher unbekannten lebendigen Leichtigkeit erfahren. Er hat vor sich grad zwei wunderbare Vorbilder :)
As usual, a wonderful video with such great instrumentalists and voices. I wish every singer I knew could absorb something from these soloists. Anyway ... I love the fact that these are several performance made into one. Notice the heavenly illumination as God shines his light on the chorale at 26:38. That's the least he could have done for such performance(s). 😉
At first hearing the first movement was too fast for me, but on the second one it seems that so it should be... Amazing how every time and with each new performance you learn something new with Bach. Thank you for this great performance
So i don't know music, but i guess I know greatness when i hear it. . The notes seem so perfect while there's singing and not singing. So on and so on.
Who could possibly give this a thumbs down??? Among the best performances and production I have ever seen- not to mention the miraculous music of course.
Choir ánd orchestra and soloists of very high level, I do like the vocal acrobatics of tenor Daniel Johannsen in particular and the chorus from 25.50 onwards. Wonder when this was, no date mentioned. Thank you for a reply.
What do I ask about the world? I ask: “How did these magnificent singers and instrumentalists come together under a conductor who has Bach in his bones?” I will mention just one thing I treasure about Bach Foundation performances - with a few unfortunate exceptions, it gives us Bach without the mess of distracting vibrato. Many other performers seem to lack this talent or they suppose that “Bach” is just another way to spell “Wagner” ))) Some say that vibrato gives colour to music, but that is like using curry to give taste to ice cream. I will mention just one of the many fine singers - the Alto, Margot Oitzinger. What a delight. I hope we hear more of her (and the others).
I find wide vibrato is more a problem with sopranos which I agree with you is really unpleasant in Bach and problematic in fugue passages. On the other hand, ever have cardamom-flavored ice cream? It tastes amazing.
David Brown, I am sorry for my inadequate English. Quote: ...", it gives us Bach without the mess of distracting vibrato." I support you 100 % on this. I don't believe that people really know what's going on when the musicans use vibrato. "If you play with vibrato you'll be outside of the specified pitch for most of the time." In our days, Bach-performances is often without vibrato, search for HIP-performances.
@@geiryvindeskeland7208 Never mind your English, your understanding of music is superb and you make a valid point. Sadly, I think many CLASSICAL musicians are incapable of performing without vibrato, so they make a virtue of it. We could write many reasons against vibrato, eg, we see that in physics, vibrato is the same as a trill ornamentation: the pitch oscillates up and down rapidly. In a trill it is based on the note which is sung/played first and then it moves back and forth by a half or full note with a rhythm in line with the music. But vibrato gives us a sloppy, undisciplined 'trill' that does not necessarily play the note at all but goes each side of it by an amount which has no bearing on anything musical. Basically, the performer tells us that "the note is somewhere around about here", but they don't actually sing/play it. Performers should do authentic trills as Bach directs and not add their sloppy trills through the rest of his compositions. This is especially bad with female singers inflicting on us a wide and heavy vibrato. (Physics also explains the greater energy in the higher pitch of female singers.) In the choir vibrato doesn't matter so much - it just makes the sound a little bit muddy. The world needs a music ensemble dedicated to this authenticity and I wish the J.S.Bach Foundation would take it on, because they already come very close. By looking at the left hand of their string players we can see that they never add vibrato. So there is a start. I could make many more points against vibrato in Bach but the best case is made simply by listening. Music without vibrato is more beautiful, more sincere, more intimate, and more sexy (like Bach).
I can see all the greatest composers nodding and saying “there are no arguments, Bach has to surpassed us all”, not to mention that God’s vote trumps everyone.

Oh, My God. I prayed again tonight with this awesome cantata. Thank you, thank you very much with all my soul from Argentina.
Across the entire globe, are there really only a few hundred people who like this supernal music?
Mme Rial a vraiment une technique éblouissante : aisance, naturel, justesse, sensibilité..., - tout y est !
Bravo à cette grande artiste. 👏
