- When Presto finds himself lost in a forest, he sees the apparition of a beautiful young girl named Varla. Dungeon Master tells Presto that by finding the girl, he may find his way home.

Actually, Presto's real name is Albert. Presto is his nickname.
I don't think Presto was thinking with his heart, when he said, "I need you too," to the girl.
Presto is only a nickname . I can't remember what his real name is "Alan," or sonething, but they never call him anything but "Presto."
N.B. it is Peter (Optimus Prime Cullen that does Venger's voice isn't it?.)
Gotta love Eric .... Lawyers TV Ketchup and French Fries; all very modern 1980's western youth culture phenomena.
Begging your pardon ..... His real name's Albert , which even in the 1980's was a bit of an old man's name. So you can't help imagining his friends want to call him something a bit funkier and cooler. "Presto ," seems like a perfect alternative for a boy magician.

In the story Venger has conquered most of the realm so many castles and lands belongs to him ..what the kids are doing in the realm is free all of them from Venger just like this village
Venger isn't just a master sorcerer, he's also in real estate. Those are all remodeled castles he's flipping for profit.
Eric performs heroics: 'WHAT AM I DOING?!'
Gotta love how the hero inside of Eric shows itself once in a while. He has a courage that he isn't aware of.
It was a Presto-centric episode but I felt like it was really Eric who shined in this story.
You should see the fan-made final episide, they just finished it last year, Requiem I think it is called. Not the story-board but the actual animation.
@@johnwolf2829 Requiem references a few other episodes so is in keeping with the backstories and established lore. I wasn't too convinced with a few of the voice actors but the pacing is good and has a lot of heart. A great ending that portrays the original episode's script extremely well and includes a couple of added extras too.
@@jherrenor Yeah, the voice "acting", maybe the less said about that the better, but at least they got it done. They also had an original in there doing a couple of the chars.
But the visuals, wow! They even did an Ep that was a full half hours, so Kudos to them!
I was never even a big fan but I have to say it was a heck of a thing to see. :D
All of them became a bit of themselves - Eric has hidden courage, so he's Cavalier. Hank had untapped leadership, so he became the Ranger. Bobby was wild at heart so he became a Barbarian. Presto was like Willow - a magician who didn't believe in himself. I don't know what Diana was prior, but apparently it was enough to gift her as Acrobat. I'd be most suspect of Sheila. She became Thief. Haha!

The ending was beautiful too, I love it when Presto picks up Varla in his arms.
I remember loving this episode as a kid. Even bought the DVD collection as an adult.

Ive had and watched the entire dvd collection when i was a kid, looked for them about 3 months ago, nowhere to be found, couple of days ago my brother stumbled across them here!! So here i am, working my way through them 😭
Every character contributes in this show. Uni knew something was wrong with the "warrior" on the white horse before anyone else did.

One of my favorite episodes! Presto and Varla make a lovely couple. I totally ship them. Wonderful how the series addresses many aspects and experiences growing up, especially love.
I like to think Presto went back and made her his wife.
I always wonder what her powers were supposed to be in the rules -- Illusionist character class? Psionics? ;)
@@michaelmclaughlin261 I agree with you. Or maybe Presto would meet her back in the real world under a different name. Psionics is a good class for Varla too.
@@WesterosWolf ... I remember at the time I saw it thinking her powers were hallucination generation/telepathy using the Psionic rules from the AD&D Players Handbook. The problem is that Psionics don't really work in a fantasy setting. They are a sci fi trope/convention. AD&D had to work very hard on Dark Sun to create a setting where Psionics seemed a better fit.
The rules/ideas for Psionics would be better suited for Star Frontiers or especially for Gamma World.
But yeah, I'll have to dig up the old Players Handbook to see how Varla's powers would create such powerful effects. I remember this story was pretty amazing when I first saw it, and yes they made a cute couple. :)

..yes... Felt like a proper drama..like CBS Storybreak meets the ABC Afterschool Special.
You know for a kids show, and though they are breif, this show can get dark and very serious. I wish more shows nowadays would take the approach. But it seems unless the characters are a bright as a kindergartener and don't make a fart joke every episode the show won't last more than 2 seasons

Presto was potentially the most powerful of the group , but he was usually portrayed as a joke. Poor guy .
If they made him a full-blown mage he could pretty much solo the whole series, or even return everyone home in episode 1.

3:36 *Dungeon Master isn't kidding, that's for sure.* Even at such a young age this girl, *"Varla" (think thats how it's spelled),* already commands practically *godlike powers of illusion.* She's able to cast visions and or "astral projections" so convincing even the mighty Venger was fooled, and he's probaly one of THE most powerful evil sorcerers in the realm! *If Varla ever finds some proper magic tutors* or masters in the arts of arcane lore she could have *a promising future as a powerful sorceress, mistress of the mind!* (she might even have great talents in other forms of magic too)
Speaking of which, did you see how happy he was to see Varla reunited with her parents?

Voice acting in this episode is hilariously awesome or awesomely hilarious, either either.
I didn't know D&D has a comic made by IDW, and Varla is Presto's soul mate as stated in the 1st issue. And even the finale fan animation show Presto decided to stay with her, leaving the Earth dimension behind.

I often see aspects in Presto that are inside of myself. But unlike Presto, I am less expressive of my feelings. I want to try being more in touch and confident with expressing my feelings so that maybe I too can find unconditional love. Presto and Varla are a neat mixture that works. She like most women motivate men through dark obstacles. Thank you D&D. Thank you Dungeons & Dragons TV. I'm in love with this show.

Nice that they made Eric heroic for a change - I'm referring to how he retrieved their weapons.
Back then, it was safe for us 70s and 80s kids to watch these sci-fi / fantasy / adventure shows and films that reflected on real life events, scenarios, morality, etc. Today’s kids are overprotected from seeing shows like this. Closet thing they get is The Legend of Zelda or anything videogame, CGI, or on children cable channels and Harry Potter reruns on SyFy.
Venger must be a very rich guy, as he has a new castle for every episode. ;-)
Management of the Evil is expensive.
Awesome that Diana uses her pole as a sort of swoord to whack the swamp creature with. These kids might not have had a sword amongst them but they were at least resourceful enough to turn the "weapons," they did bave to agressive use when needed. Maybe that was always Dungeon Master's intention though?
What a great ending!
Probably one of the best episodes, if not the best, episode of the series. Shame that 80s standards had to somewhat water down some of the deeper themes as well as the young romance between Presto and Varla. I wish Netflix or Amazon would pick up the license and give it a modern reboot.
This episode was a little creepy.
Presto said it feels like he's known Varla forever, and Dungeon Master says he'll understand in due time; but this was not explained.
Actually, sometimes when you meet someone new and you get on really well, it feels like you have known them for years and you start acting like old freinds, I should know, it has happened to me a few times.

The kids didn't want to use their weapons on them because they ultimately knew they were just hungry, poor but GOOD people.

Many parents back in the 80s loved watching their kids play D&D and watching the cartoon. But there were many that complained about the game

There is one called Requim, that was the final episode, it is on UA-cam type in D&D requim and they do go home except Presto, he wanted to stay with Varla.

How Does Varla knowing how Tiamat looks like? She doesen'd see Tiamat before!
It could be that her power is subjective to whoever witnessess the illusion. Lets say for instance, as she concentrates, she doesnt build the fire in her mind, but she projects the illusion of fire onto the perception of the witness. All she has to do is concentrate, "Make them see a fire burning the roofs of their house." In Vengers case, she projected the thought, "Make Tiamat, he five headed dragon with wings, burst thru the wall."
If she's Psionic using the AD&D 1st Edition Player's Handbook Rules, maybe she has telepathy in addition to being able to create hallucinations. So she could use telepathy to pull an image of Tiamat from the minds of the kids and Venger.
Man those villagers are persistent.. one would think if they really thought they were evil wizards/witches they wouldn't chase them or want to piss em off lol
Late reply but...
Perhaps in this dnd-esque world most spellcasters have to use reagents and must speak long incantations in order to cast any spell with Venger, Dungeon Master and (perhaps a few) others like them being the few 'natural' sorcerers with inborn command of a variety of powers. So for the villagers it was a matter of apprehending these perceived evil witches and wizards before they can cast terrible curses and invoke dark forces or bring ill fortune.
It would have been funny if at the end the villagers decided that DM had to 'suffer the fate of all witches' too.
And it would suck to be those villagers and finally realize they could have been eating well all this time.
You figure they'd have advanced a good few levels if this cartoon was willing to follow traditional gameplay
From the looks of things Dungeon Master runs such a tight ship financially that they don't ever have one SINGLE Silver Coin to split amongst themselves most of the time... :(

Why does Venger figure out a way to absorbed the powers of DM's pupils's into his body? That is what I would do if I were Venger. Then I can magnify those power and call upon them whenever I need them. Pound the ground and you have an earthquake. I truly can go STELTH, the bow powers make my projectiles much stronger, and the magicians powers can allow me to create and distory as I please. The javlain would strengthen my agility. The shield, ha ha I can't lose cause if anyone tries to knock me down...NO CHANCE IN HELL!!!

Dungeon Master himself was nearly killed in one episode when he used up all his powers.
