Black Dyke Band: Metropolis 1927 - Peter Graham

- The Black Dyke Band perform "Metropolis 1927" by Peter Graham at the New York Staff Band's 129th Annual Festival held on March 19, 2016 at the Centennial Memorial Temple in New York City.
Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction epic Metropolis is considered to be a masterpiece of cinematic vision and a high point of German Expressionist filmmaking.
Set in a future dystopian world the film introduces the viewer to two contrasting communities living in the vast city of Metropolis. Those
above ground live a life of privilege and pleasure serviced by the underground-dwelling drone workers whose role is to maintain and operate the banks of machines which provide the city's power.
Lang's film, which can be considered a type of 20th century morality play, draws upon a range of themes and influences from Marxist ideals and social satire to overt religious symbolism.
The music does not attempt to precise the plot, such as it is, but simply reflects my musical responses to Lang's noirish visual style and set designs - the brooding machine rooms, the decadent nightclubs, the gothic cathedral and so on - paradoxically a world of terrifying beauty.
Metropolis 1927 was commissioned by Bramwell Tovey and The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain with funds provided by The Arts Council of England. The first performances took place
in the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare on Saturday 19th April and in the Cheltenham Town Hall on Sunday 20th April 2014.
This revised version was premiered by The Black Dyke Band, conductor Nicholas Childs, at the 38th European Brass Band Championships in the Konzerthaus Freiburg, Germany, on Saturday 2 May 2015.

13:23 SCV 2018 closer. Literally started tearing up I miss playing it!
Julia Wong and FMHS band 2017
when will you be posting your trumpet cam?
Congrats on the win!!!!!!!!! I was rooting for you all last year too. Did you add the "people speaking in different languages/scream intro" just before finals? I don't remember hearing that in Massillon, OH.
Trust me we all miss you guys playing it too
And you guys were moving really fast when you did this. My hat is off to you!
I've heard this many times, and the brass musician in me still can't get over how good that sounds. Lol. American brass players grow up learning to sound like British brass players, especially in a wind band context. The level of tone quality and technical ability in this is nuts, and this is what every American brass player tried to sound like back in the olden days, at least. Gorgeous sound. 👍
Metropolis 1927 just entered the public domain, which means this music should be public domain too. This is great news for me personally.
where can you find if this musical work is truly public domain?
Not even close... Written in 2015
I love watching the director so happy and enjoying the piece. I absolutely love brass music!
I like how Peter Graham's compositions places more emphasis on the percussion section!
When the basses come in like they do at 2:21, it’s like an avalanche of sound!! Wow!!
that's mostly the trombones
@@Dualis58 i think its a good balance of both. A lot of low end there for just the bass trom to deliver

At 9.04 Curtain . WOW! What an Euphonium sound !!
Perfect. Every player a virtuoso!
It's great to see great musicians showing they too struggle.
Where? Never saw or heard any struggling.
@@markwebster3105 one dude missed his entrance and rolled his eyes (totally understandable btw), but other than that it was pretty excellent
Anyone else here from SCV 2018?
Kristopher Phillips I’m having Vanguard withdrawals so I’m just listening to their repertoire on repeat, but it’s not nearly the same as getting to hear their set every day!
Clyclone same lol I often find myself relistening to their new repertoire...
Closer is going to be so good
dog de la frog I cannot wait!! Their show is already bomb.com

Brilliant. Classic dyke on form.. loved the basses towards the end around the xylophone solo
Gotta watch Metropolis 1927 again~~!:)
You all make me so happy.

It's wonderful to hear something new and original from Peter Graham. It's been a while. Superbly performed by the way! Good job Dyke!
I forget just how good each player in the band is...silly me lol
Only just found this piece. Brought me to tears. Amazing.
This is one of the most amazing things I've heard/seen in a few years. Outstanding musicians, virtuosos in every chair. Beautifully composed, and intricate. Is anyone going to mention the band to their left, watching with backs turned? Do they have to follow that performance?!?!?
What an absolute joy it must be to conduct that band!!
Flugle soloist gives me goosebumps

@@meanathradon lmaoooo true didn't even think about that. Well let's not forget Indonesia 😂😂😂
@@meanathradon yup. embarrassed to say that I've never heard of this chart before 2018. Really nice writing.
So tight rhythmically, and musical at the same time
My god these are just sooooo good, simply astonishing standard of musicianship.
Great performance
Magnificent!! The texture, technique and intonation spot on, also loved the instrumentation which brought forth special colors/timbre to this performance.

Just sublime!
Superb performance.
Each player playing to their limit, with control, together, this beats any digi crap.

7:11 is just too good
My favorite part is 13:43 man he looks so happy
I am absolutely floored by both the arrangement and performance. Wonderful. I do have to say one thing. The composer must have played a lot of SNES Super Mario World. Listen from 11:29-11-47. Boss theme.
I find this very unlikely
I could imagine the opposite haha
It's unlikely that he did, but there's a very good possibility that he heard his children playing the game.
When King Jesus are commming for 2 time we can celebrit Jesus Kristus with music. Music for all ears. Soli deo gloria
I'd LOVE to be sitting as close to this as that Salvo trom section! :)
Ok I really hope the last part is used in Vanguard’s show
Sounds like it's going to be their closer once they put it on the field!
Samuel Perlman yep, saw them last night! So excited for when they finally have the closer on the field!!!!
Holy shit, did they use the last part. Nailed it too!

Imagine if SCV did the tremolo as played here instead of the mello sustain. 14:00
For a marching environment, I would say a sustain sounds cleaner
Tbh I'm sure they tried it only to find that it didn't sound well in that environment
Bruh that sustains still going idk what your talking about.
Imagine if Black Dyke would have had 2 mellowphones and played the sustain. Would have added even more excitement to the ending IMO.

I see where Bernstein got some of his licks for West Side Story.
Bernstein got those licks from a composer born in 1958? Seems improbable.
Would it be practical to adapt the tenor horn into a bell-front marching horn?
There used to be bell-front tenor horns, called solo altos. Nowadays the closest thing is the Andalucia marching F alto horn, based on a G bugle design. But nobody makes an Eb tenor horn in bell-front form, and there isn't any reason to really. The modern marching mellophone is perfect for the job.

4 Solo Cornets (front row), 1 Eb cornet, 1 Repiano Cornet (2nd in the back row, was one of the soloists), 2 2nd Cornets, 2 (sometimes 3) 3rd Cornets, 1 flugelhorn, 3 Eb tenor horns (Solo, 1st, 2nd), 2 baritone horns (1st and 2nd), 2 euphoniums (Solo and 2nd, though they usually read from the same part), 2 tenor trombones (Solo and 2nd), 1 bass trombone (traditionally in G, now a modern double valve Bb instrument), 2 Eb basses (tubas), 2 Bb basses, 3-4? percussion.
