We don’t move on FROM trauma. We move on WITH it.
In this inspiring talk, Samra uses her personal story of healing after the trauma of an abusive child marriage, to examine universal narratives of pain and resilience. She offers meaningful and accessible pathways to healing and thriving after trauma, and instills hope in the power of the human spirit.
Filming and video editing credits go to Kamal Ismail and NSHAPS Productions. Samra Zafar is an award-winning internationally renowned speaker, bestselling author, and educator for equity, mental health, and human rights. She has been recognized twice among the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada. She is also named among the Top 25 Most Inspirational Women in Canada, and Top 25 Canadian Immigrants. Samra's book, A Good Wife: Escaping The Life I Never Chose, based on her journey of escaping an abusive child marriage to pursue her education and shed light on gender-based oppression, is an international bestseller, and is being adapted to a premium TV series. Samra is currently pursuing her MD at Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I don't know how many times I almost paused this video to post something on my whatsapp status just because you had just said something powerful, this video is so powerful and motivational. I still feel like just posting the link is not enough but it's the best way to get people to come and feel what I felt for themselves and I hope they will. Thank you so much!❤❤❤

Thank you for your courage to speak out. We all need to stop hiding the pain abuse has caused. Only then will we be able to examine and name the words and actions that harm us. Samra, I am glad you have broken free.

Whenever I watch her in ted talk videos, I just get lost in her. I can feel every bit of traumatized scenarios that we south-east Asian women go through or have been seen in our family lives with cycles of generational abuse. Sending love from Bangladesh.
