    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The top-of-the-range 401, for domestic use. The 401G was made in Germany (hence the G). If you have a 401a, the A indicates the machine was built in the USA.
The 401 was the successor of the 301. And the 301 was as far as I know not sold in Europe. So to us in the EU the predecessor was the AMAZING 201. Singer wanted to make the 201 even better - the 401 was that machine.
And it was capable of doing multiple (in-build) zigzag-patterns!
A 401 had a rotating hook, you probably know from the 201. Like the 201 the Singer 401 uses the type 66 bobbins and standard 15x1 needles.
    It’s all in this video!
BTW: It is not necessary to remove the cover plate when you want to oil the 401. But when you want to grease it too it does has to be removed for access.
I have multiple vids online on vintage Singer sewing machines. Feel free to watch more…

I own 4 sewing machines and 1 of them is my favorite 403 I paint cars for a living so I ended up polishing all the Crome parts and I put 2 coats of car clear on her .. she looks amazing the factory paint was in excellent condition so I decided to lightly sand her with 2000 wet or dry and clear coat her… my next clear coat job is my 201 😁 after my 301 is going to get a complete paint job I haven’t decided what color yet …I love these older sewing machine …great video 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🙏🏼

I'm new to your channel. And I have to compliment you on your beautiful, high-quality filming. Although, I have to say, the music is a bit much, and makes it hard to hear while you're talking. I think that the 401 is actually the successor of the 301. Which is the first slant-needle machine. I don't know whether you have had the 301 in Europe. But we did here in the United States. Many of them are still going strong, just as the 401 is even today. I tell anybody who's looking for a sewing machine. Not to waste their money on buying a new cheap plastic junk machine. Or spending thousands upon thousands of dollars for one. Buy a good vintage machine, and it will last you your lifetime.

    • @erikneek
      @erikneek  2 роки тому +2

Thank you so much for the compliment - means the world to me!
The music was too much. I have to admit that. Luckily I've found some better (more quiet) tracks for the upcoming videos. Mixing sound is hard for me 'cause I have hearing aids. What to me sounds as a good mix/balanced audio track doesn't mean it's good for any other person. I'll keep that in mind for the next video.
The 401 was the successor to the 301. But since the 301 was not built nor released in Europe we see the 201 as it predecessor. That's what I wanted to say in the video ;-)
For all the folks in the US, the 301 is the successor like you stated.
Hope you enjoy the upcoming videos as well. The next will be the 24-7 and I have a 48k and 12k too. And I will re-edit some older videos next month.
      Have a great day!

Do i need the plastic black cams for stitches mentioned on that panel? I just got a machine without the cams but anything except a stright stitch isnt working. I noticed i dont have any plastic cam inside. Its either this or the machine is broken

    • @erikneek
      @erikneek  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Liv,
By the best of my knowledge the machine still works WITHOUT the black cams, as long as it is NOT set to 'Special' (which is for the optional cams). The inbuilt stitched should work.
When the top cover is removed, can you see anything moving when selecting any other setting? It may need some oil. That happened to mine before I made that video you saw.
And is the needle position set to the middle?
If you have problems with you 401 you might want to join and post your question at the 'Singer 401' group on facebook. They can probably help you better with your problem.
Good luck and all the best,
      Erik

@@liv7680 Do the mechanics inside move too, then you sew (with the needle in position 3/centered)?

      Hi Paula,
So sorry to hear you have issues with a 421. Such a lovely machine. It should work without problems.
My 401 worked perfect. I had the tension on 2 or something like that. At 8 is pretty high.

Parts for many Singer sewing machines are still available. Every part has a SIMANCO part number. If you don not have the part, you can find the part number in the parts-manual. Enter that part number in Google, and you might get some hits.

I asked if it is possible to replace it and they said no. Do you know where I can get a replacement motor in the Netherlands for a Singer 401G?
    Thanks

Hoi Georgina, thank you so much for your message. I'm sooooo glad I was able to help you along with your 401G.
I had an issue with my 401G too when I still had it. The repair shop I went to wasn't too keen to repair it - So I think I kind-of know the feeling.
Two tips: You might want to contact Niels de Gooijer of Naaimachines Vintage & Antiques. You can find him on FB. He is located near Eindhoven and is an international dealer of sewing machines and sewing machine parts.
If he doesn't have anything you can visit Helen Howes' site in the UK. But she mainly deals in older machines (if Im not mistaken....)
The motor of the 401 was used in multiple other Singers. I think - but don't know for sure - the 301, 400 series and 500 series series all share this motor. But do a factcheck before buying, because I'm not sure ;-)
Did you know there is a FB group dedicated to the Singer 401 machines? Perhaps they can help you. (Note: The motor of a 401A is different to a 401G motor!)
      Succes! (Good luck)
And I hope you get yours working soon!

Why do ppl have music on instructional videos

    • @erikneek
      @erikneek  Місяць тому

My videos need music because I sometimes use up to 10 parts of different takes of ONE single sentence. (That is one of the drawbacks of not being a native English spekaer). So the background noise is all over and the music masks those voice-over edits.
But you're right: In this case -this video- the music was WAAYYYY TOO loud. (I have a hearing disability so mixing and balancing sound to very difficult.
But I made a revised version with... less prominent music. I hope you like that version better.
Take care and have a wonderful day!

Hi Ebby. Thank you so much for watching. I’m not very good with embroidery. Maybe you want to join the Singer 401-group on FB. I think you can find your answer there. Sorry I’m not able to help you. Good luck!

Music sucks man.sorry. You are not a native speaker and I'm not as well. Imagine how I have to Concentrate on everything to understand. And on top of that, that irritating Music I have to ignore. I am also already have difficulties to focus . So I ask: WHY??

Hi Bea, thank you for your input.
You're right (or you could be right).
Having a hearing disability it is difficult for me to balance/mix sound (and music). But I need the music. Please let me explain: In some cases I have to redo some sentences over and over again Even up to ten times per sentence. Often I read only the separate words and stitch them together. So there are a lot of cuts in every sentence. As a result the ambient noise is all over so I have to mask all those cuts, by using music.
And then I have the first problem again: Difficulties balancing the sound. My hearing aids let me hear sound different to 'normal people'.
I'm sorry the video was not to your liking. Doing the best I can... and trying to do it better next time.
(If you want, you can switch on the subtitles I added.)

I made another version, with less prominent (and overwhelming) music: ua-cam.com/video/lbwyTqoDUjk/v-deo.html
      Have a great day, Erik

The 'music' is irrelvant & distracts from the content. Ruined it for me.
    Sorry, but that's my opinion.

Thank you for sharing your opinion John.
I'm sorry to hear that you didn't liked the video regardless all the info I have in the on this fabulous machine. (I also have separate videos on threading and so on, with less prominent music.)
      Take care, Erik
