Thank you for mentioning me in your video as the one who got you feeding weeds to the worms. I have learned anything from your channel as well 👍
You're welcome, CWG. Thank you for always being willing to share your knowledge. I appreciate all the experiments and documentation you do on your channel.
I’ve had a 3 tray worm bin now for about 4 years and it runs like a RR. It’s amazing to see how you do it on a larger scale but the basics are just the same, small scale or large scale. They do indeed go nuts for anything sweet, I was amazed when I fed mine mouldy old strawberries - they went bananas!
Captain, could you use place a [piece of [plywood at an angle under your bins to allow the casting fall out from under the bins? This should make harvesting easier.
Exactly my thought. Drop the back edge six or so inches for the rake, and then taper it to the top edge of the front of the base. The $2.50 rake will still function to wipe the taper. If he wants to get fancy, he could laminate the plywood to add durability and a slippery slope.
Good stuff!
Good ideas, TL! Thanks for chiming in.
Funny, I was just wondering the same thing 😁
Happy 2014! Thank you for the detailed explanations. It has been a year and my worms are still alive and well. God bless you
Call me lazy but I can see myself sitting down on my wheeled micanics chair, take care of your back Captain we love ya!
Appreciate the care, Your Reaper... my wife and kids endorse your recommendation!
Good bless you too
Hello Captain Matt,
I have an idea that could save some time and bending over.
You could add a piece of plywood underneath the bin at a slope from the top in the back to the bottom in the front.
Basically, make a slide for the casting to drop out in front of the bin for easy scooping.
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing your experience.
That's a good idea, Rusty. Thank you!
Thanks for showing us how you harvest a little and a lot from your CFTs!! I love a good watermelon worm ball & this bin did not disappoint!! Great video!🪱🪱🪱
Thanks Vermicompost LBD! I love all the experiments you do on your channel!
Nice job 👍
Love what you're doing! So fun to watch. Thank you.

Bless you for sharing. Have a happy 4th of July!
I recently looked around and found little local access to compost, teas and worms. Since I’m retired and have about 4000 square feet of garden space. I had planned on producing worm casting to save some money but now it’s looking like I can make a little money too. Already started my breeding buckets with 250 worms each that I’ll save the casting till the farmers markets and greenhouses open and see what I can do before I go full bore with this.
Awesome to hear, Jim. You can do it! Keep us posted on progress!
Wonderful. Always inspiring and educating. Keep it up Matt.
Pretty cool I enjoy watching how you all do such big harvests of worm castings. Thanks for sharing Captain Matt!
Excellent video - thanks!
You're a legend Matt. Only found you a day or two ago and i'm learning new things and ways to do this amazing past-time. Thank you.
Thanks, Full Circle. We'll all be just legends one day fairly soon. Thanks for the encouragement!
Thanks!!!
What a coincidence, I just came back inside from building my continuous worm bin, and I go on UA-cam and see you JUST uploaded a new video 😁
Your channel is the gift that just keeps on giving
Nice! That's some perfect timing, Matt and Rob. Great to hear about your bin!
Wow those worms are really moving out nicely for you. I'll have to back track and see about the wheat grass. Don't forget to take us with you when you empty it.
Another great video!
Love your worms, and they love the UWB almost as much as my soil loves it. The plants growing with my castings are raging compared to those I did not apply to the mix of Coast of Maine, No-Till blend. The other test I did was to use the same COM soil with the bulk castings offered by UWC; my castings outperform them as well, but their castings did improve performance of the packaged soil compared to using it as it is.
Thank you for chiming in here!
You are an amazing person love the videos
I've been farming and experimenting for about a year now. I always get worms at the bottom of castings, wet or dry ... no matter. I just pick them out and put them back to bed :)) Thank you for you wonderful lessons and advice .
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I've learned tons from you so far!
Great to hear, Kevin. You're welcome!
Thanks for sharing! I definitely enjoyed watching each time you turned over a new piece of watermelon & found a pile of worms. So cool!
Hey Jessie, You're welcome! That's my favorite - never gets old.
Buenos dias. Es un verdadero placer escuchar a alguien con tan amplios conocimientos sobre las lombrices (yo tambien soy un amante de la vermicultura) y esas ganas por difundir sus conocimientos, muchas gracias desde Burgos (España)
HI CM, JUST RECENTLY I CAME ACROSS YOUR VIDEOS AND I REALLY LIKE THE WAY YOU DISSEMINATE YOUR EXPERIENCES TO YOUR AUDIENCES AROUND THE WORLD...THANK YOU FOR ALL THOSE VIDEOS. I NOW LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY TIME I WATCHED YOUR VIDEOS. GREETING FROM PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Greetings Christopher! You're welcome - it's amazing that we can help each other across oceans!
Captain Matt i turnrd 73 in June started worm farming this year. I saw your video from Meme plan ing to build racks like that.
Very nice :)
Harvest time😀
Hi Capt Matt, love your videos. Does your training program discuss how to build the bins, similar to your large, red bins, and your coccoon shelving? Im hplopinh for plans and supply recommendations for bins to start mine. Thanks!
When you scrape on the bottom side with the rake, I'm always wondering "Does he ever cut up/injure/kill worms?" How do you manage that to not kill any worms while doing all this? Thanks for your videos, they're instructive and enjoyable :)
An awesome setup but you should screw a little piece of angled plywood to where you're raking it that way it'll come out and you'll get all of it
That’s a great idea. Thank you!
@@CaptainMattsWorms your welcome
we have 9 kids too!
Captain Matt a great video, how do you constantly avoid fungus gnats infestation? I have had 2 majors infestation-invasion in about 14 months, I have starve all my bins for 3 months, tried 5 different solutions and concuctions and nothing worked, the best results came to spray every second days with "Mosquito Dunks". Within the first week I had eliminated 90% of the flies, and the following week I was totally clear of FG, now when I feed them I also spray on top of the bedding. Again you did a great video. Thanks Phil.
Thanks for the advice... looking forward to testing the Dunks soon.
I have a question about storing worm castings and I thought this might be a good place to ask it. What is the best way to store unused worm castings like over the winter? thank you for all the information that you share with us. I have been using red wigglers 2 seasons now and have an old freezer converted to a worm bin and I use worms in my outside compost bins and leaf pile making leaf mold. I am a 70 year old retired electrician and I have been studying your videos and lots of others as well but you are inspiring me to build a CFT bin. And maybe even start selling some. Thank you again!!
Hey Ron... there's no danger in the worm castings freezing. They retain their viability. Keep me posted on your progress - would love to hear how it goes.
I just let mine dry out to powder. I've still got a big block left from a half bucket.
Hi captain. I hail from South Africa. How did you build your box so that you can scrape the castings out from underneath?
Is there a shelf life to the bagged worm casting?? Many thanks Pete. UK
What is purpose of the florescent lights on top of worm bin in the corners? I love your videos they have helped me put on my worm farming journey! Thank you for what you do!
Hey TJ great to hear. The lights keep the worms from wanting to escape.
I appreciate so much your informative and entertaining videos. What about putting large concrete mixing tubs underneath ($18 at Home Depot) to catch the castings once you rake? They are large, flat bins which wouldn’t impede your raking efforts. Thanks so much!!
Thanks for the idea, J... my back will thank you!
Yeah I was just watching and I agree why not place biins under there your back will thank you
Have you ever thought of doing a seminar or class to get hands on and demonstrate. We're in central pa and would love to attend if you ever do
That's an interesting idea, Joe!
When you overwater do you put bins underneath to catch the excess or just let it drip to the concrete? If you allow it to drip have you ever had any issues with smell or stains? I have an 8' by 2' CFT in my basement and don't want to cause any issues.
Thanks Capt. Matt! I'm not sure I would have undertaken this adventure without your guidance and great personality!
I just let it go into concrete and have a drain in the floor. You can want to experiment with catching if in a basement. Thrilled to hear of your progress!
I assumed you had a drain of some sort, Thank you for the clarity! So far its working but I will be cutting a drain tile into my sump pit eventually. Other than losing a couple worms here and there to the dryness of the concrete its going very well!@@CaptainMattsWorms
Cement mix tubs make my life a tab easier when I harvest my vb96...
Good tip, Lino!
What happens if you put a bin in a garage that might get below freezing in the winter?
Great Vid Captain Matt!! To get 1.5 tons of castings left out of the CFT how many cubic feet are your bins? I’m guessing around 32-36 possibly.
He has a build video series if you look at the available videos. There is a link to the schematics in the show notes of the videos.
I think the rough measurements of the basin area are 8' Len x 3' wide x 2' depth... so roughly 48 ft³ if completely full
Hey Nusoil... specs are in description of ua-cam.com/video/GiHQWmeD358/v-deo.html
Captain Matt do you sell the red wiggles worms as I’d like get started raising worms. I’m a avid backyard gardener.
I only sell locally in the Troy, NY area. We recommend Meme’s Worms bit.ly/34F0OW4 for buying worms if you're in the United States.
Put a piece of plywood on an angle and it will slide on out.
That’s a stellar idea!
How long does it take to lure them up?
Nevermind. 2 days. Lol
Thank you i learn so much from your videos
Happy to hear that!
Why don’t you put a bin underneath to catch the majority of what falls?
Good idea… I’ve moved toward 1 ton bags for similar reasons. CFT was good for regular harvests for garden - which is no longer the focus.
Do you think worms can eat seaweed?
Interesting question, Julius. Sounds like it’s time for an experiment!
weeds??? really???
Agreed let’s stick together and share with each other, I’ll start uploading vids of what I have going on very soon.
Looking forward to seeing it, Handy Geek - just subscribed to you.
@@CaptainMattsWorms Matt have you ever stored worm compost outside over the winter Thanks Hugh Nauman Grand Bend Ontario
