To Rosco: It was a sudden, unexpected storm. (Not in the forecast) She may not have been attached to the cable. My 21 year old daughter and my husband just hiked this last month. (Her first time, also)
EXACTLY. A woman I was dating wanted to do it, we got to half way up the "stair case" to subdome and could see dark clouds heading for us. I turned around and suggested my gf did too, live to summit another day. Sure she was pissed off, but she was alive, a hail storm blew in and she lived to summit another day
I am an very highly trained and experienced climber, and during my career in the Marine Corps, I was an instructor at the Mountain Wafare Center at Pickle Meadows in California. I ALWAYS check the weather report for a few days in advance before I start a climb. And no, you cannot ever predict rapid changes in weather. However these two knew that rain was in the forecast, but still decided to make the trek. This is truly tragic in every way possible, but I also believe that was preventable as well.... My deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends.
This sucks so much. They were in immediate danger when the first drops hit. That granite when it gets wet becomes a slip and slide. And why weren't you wearing or have tethers available?
Jonathan Rohloff said a ranger told them storms were in the forecast, and they did see clouds at times. But the sky was clear when they reached the cables, and atop the summit there were panoramic views - until thunder boomed. Silly, Silly, Silly. They were warned and disobeyed!
Hey there - my dad died of a head injury he was hit on his bicycle by a hit and run when i was 10 and he was 42. I feel ur pain, but from the other side 😢
Yosemite needs to remove the cables and all hardware and return this to a mountain climbing route, anywhere cables, chains, wooden plank are provided, yields a false sense of security, especially when trying to persuade hikers that they can be mountain climbers.
Yosemite has not fault in this..."false sense of security, especially when trying to persuade hikers". What a CROC....If you or any hiker doesn't know their limitations take up basket weaving
Is it just me, or does this guy seem way too calm for someone who lost his daughter to a fall off of Half Dome?! As a father of 3 daughters, I’d be absolutely broken to have witnessed such a freak accident occur in front of me. Does anyone know if he was investigated at all? Just saying…
There is nothing wrong with the cables. It’s hard to forecast thunderstorms. They can form without much notice especially in the late afternoons. If you want to be extra careful bring grip gloves, wear proper shoes and bring safety cables in case you slip.
@@Julie-kb3moagreed. I feel like he needs to own up to his lack of safety. Still extremely tragic and I am not blaming him fully for what happened, mistakes happen

@@millypoo7713 Do you seriously think he's not? Sometimes people put on their TV face. Maybe he's on a different stage of grief. Maybe he cries his eyes out every second of every day except this moment. Or maybe we just go through things differently. The day I lost my dad suddenly, you can absolutely bet that I went through a shitstorm of sadness. However, the very next day and every waking moment after that I was with people, I was easily able to avoid tears, and in fact distract myself with laugher, joy, or most importantly of all my job... it was the day before the school year started, and as a teacher I wasn't going to take days off. At any rate, that was a very strange conclusion for you to arrive to from this video.
@@millypoo7713 Listen... she passed a week and a half before this interview, this is largely edited, and compared to photos he looks like to be completely wrecked and stressed. All of that timing leads to the fact that somebody can, indeed, lead a public interview about the loss of their child and still be in mourning, or grieving the way that they need to. As I stated, if you hadn't known and weren't spying on me in my private life, you wouldn't have known that I had lost my father. Every moment to myself, I was in shambles. I still have those days, and it will be ten years ago come August 10th. Imagine that you had just lost your child, you stumbled upon the comment section of this video, and you read a comment posted saying that you don't seem upset about the loss of your child. How exactly is somebody supposed to respond to this? That is why I sighed. To answer the question: "Is it me, or does this Father seem not very upset about this?" It is you. But let's say for the sake of argument that myself and the rest of the UA-cam community agrees with you. "Yes, millypoo! He DOESN'T seem upset about losing his daughter!" What exactly would your follow-up post be? That he pushed her off? That he can now live that single life he always wanted? That he is a sociopath or has CIPA disorder? Where were you going with this?
Yeah it could be and we’d never know but the trail is a great place to off someone considering it’s extremely dangerous and outfitted with technical-ish equipment for a reason and amateurs are welcomed, no questions or harnesses required
Actually it would be safer with zero slats, they made an extremely dangerous piece of mountain accessible to amateurs, should avoid this stuff unless you’re harnessed, clipped, roped, etc. My opinion anyway, I’ve been in some dangerous areas that are just so famous and popular that people don’t think about it and go on up, unprepared, I don’t know what the signage is like or ranger presence but that trail sounds like it should require clipping in attached to a harness unless they were really doing something stupid and avoidable which could be the case I haven’t been there but… dayam!
@rockyb70 What do you do, seek out arguments on UA-cam by leaving sarcastic comments all day? You must be REALLY lonely. Leave a sarcastic comment, better expect to get one back. And obviously the only one that needs to get over themselves... is YOU! And you also really need to GET A LIFE! I won't read your lame reply, so don't even bother.
