He was something else! His roles in The Deer Hunter and Dog Day Afternoon deserved Oscars for his supporting characters. I was so pleased to see y'all doing his profile!
I was an acting student in 1975 when I attended a performance of Arturo Ui at the Charles Playhouse in Boston. Al Pacino and John Cazale were the stars supported by a brilliant cast. Front row seats within 20 feet of these two legends left me in awe. Fifty years have past and the memories of that night remain indelible.
Thank you for this. I learned much that I didn't know about the man. John's work in Godfather II made the film what it is. That roll alone should have got him the Oscar. Truly a very special person.
His acting was iconic and very distinctive. I was young when Dog Day Afternoon came out, and yet almost 50 years later, his acting and his character still stand out to me. (As does his Godfather roles which eventually I saw as a teen.) RIP Fredo.
Some actor/actresses have that ability to morph into their character to where you don't see the actor, you see the character. John Cazale was one of those people and so is Meryl Streep. It's no wonder their connection was there between them. I'm sure he helped her so much in establishing her career. May he rest in peace.🙏🏻💖
I am honored to meet this man again and to cherish the times I've seen him in the movies. He was an inspiration to other actors. He will not be forgotten.
Di Niro is an absolute a$$. He may be good to personal friends, but he’s not to the people who have put him where he is today. He shite’s on anyone that disagrees with them.
Wow, I didn’t know any of this ‘til now. He was indeed a great actor and the fact he played such a great influence in the careers of Meryl Streep and others makes his legacy all the more impressive. God bless him.
Hoffman was so arrogant. He tried to take credit for Streep’s win for Kramer vs. Kramer. She won - NOT because of Hoffman’s choice- but because of her ACTING.
Well done video and summary of Cazale's career. He always looked and acted the part of the characters he portrayed. He seamlessly fit in, never over-playing his roles. Unfortunately the Academy Awards Committee under-rated and under-appreciated him. Most of the time, their decisions are based on politics and influence-pedalling anyway. They hopefully will at some point come to their senses, right this wrong and give him an award posthumously.
Apparently, he was a very kind, decent guy, as well, supportive of the actors he worked with. They regarded him as something of a father figure and often sought his guidance. Underrated man.
@@k.l.7267 seriously? Just because the Academy didn't award him? The only way to win was and is to put yourself out there and lobby for it. I don't believe many great actors never got award's. They did it for the craft, not recognition. Agree to disagree with you.
John Cazale was a different kind of actor. He had a certain aura that made him be able to carry scenes without detracting from any other actor who was sharing scenes with him. That's the way life is, you know, real life. Few actors are gifted like that. Many actors take the air out of the room, but not the truly great actors. Truly great actors are relating to whoever is in the scene with them. Meryl Streep is gifted in the same way, there's still enough air in the room to share with the others in the scene. Pacino used to be that way, but now he does take all of the oxygen, or perhaps that's just my way of seeing him these days. Eh, I might be overstepping my analysis since he's such a big personality. I'll think about that overnight.
His perfomance in The Godfather was so powerful that Fredo is now listed as a term describing a member of a group that is weak or less intelligent. He left us much too soon.
@Gimme3Steps Interesting take you have for the looks department. While I have been taken by Pacino's looks personally, I'd never level him with RR. He's a classic beauty and the proverbial 'pretty boy' (many of which had garnered accolades, like Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, etc). Pacino is none of it, in my opinion.
@@magpiesneedle2575 That was my point. He didn’t have the typical leading actor looks but he was a phenomenal actor and died way too soon to know how far he could’ve gone.
Was winning an Oscar that big of a goal in Cazale's life? Like, I'm sure he wanted one, but was he "heartbroken" when he didn't get the nomination but his buddies did? I doubt it.
Completely agree. Everything I've heard about him-including this very same video-tells me he was too humble. The video contradicts itself and uses a clickbait title instead of referring to his brief but memorable life.
I always thought it was weird Meryl started dating her soon to be husband right after Cazale passed. It just seemed too soon because she clearly loved this man. They ended up married a long time but are now divorcing. So who really knows if she really fell for him or just took comfort in his support. It's really sad Cazale passed so young and quickly. But at least he got to experience real, true love. That was a gift.
Wow a professional narrator. I both liked it and was a bit disappointed because it was a little too polished. Anyway it was a great story, done really well.
Cazale was a great actor and a kind human being. And here we have yet more proof Dustin Hoffman was a horrible person. Dustin wanted a raw reaction from Meryl in another scene in this movie so he slapped her, hard. Meryl can’t stand him to this day.

Yes his portrayal of Fredo is etched in our memories always.
Thank you. I remember him from those movies but I never new the back scene story. Thank you for not permitting his greatness to be overlooked, again.
The title is misleading. This is a biography of John Cazale, and absolutely nothing about an marriage proposal after his death, and how it went.
