Saw them in Inverness on Monday (26/01/15). Needless to say, it was a dream come true. Met them afterwards, and am still on cloud nine. Had a friend with me, and he loved it.
Paul Watchorn has a fine singing voice, but I'm really curious about his singing technique. Sean has a natural vibrato, but Paul really seems to force it. Which can't be good for your muscles... He plays a mean banjo too. Gerry's violin and banjo skills are unquestionably good and it's always good to see Eamonn and Sean having a blast!
If you had John Sheahan on fiddle - he's still playing well - these lads would look much more like the original Dubs. I'm presuming they couldn't bend his arm. Not bad at all nonetheless, guys.
This fiddle player is first class. I don't want to give the idea that I don't appreciate his musicianship by my earlier comment. It's just the appearance of the combo I was referring to.
@@robertflint2549 I think it's Father Time catching up with them. Even in this video we have at least one band member who has died since this was recorded.
Still the Watchorns continue to desecrate the music and memories of those greats whose shoes they'd not be fit to lace. God only knows what Luke Kelly thinks of Paul's "Paddy on the Railway" and "Schooldays Over". So many decent singers in Ireland and the Dubliners pick the Watchorns. WHY????
Patrick Mac Sweeney I think saying the Watchorns desecrate the music is a little strong. I feel Paul sings quite well. I never cared for Patsy's overly gruff vocals, but nothing can trump the original Dubliners, anyway. I'm happy they've continued on to keep the legacy alive. More power to them.

How on earth this motley crew can compare themselves to the legends who were the Dubliners is beyond me. Eamonn Campbell is the only one who can lay any sort of claim. Sean Cannon has the worst voice and can hardly play a guitar and should never have lasted so long in the real Dubs. Barney, Luke, Ronnie and Ciaron must be turning in their graves. Thank god John got out when he did. The guy on fiddle and banjo is very average and Paul Watchorn is just an embarrassment.
+Robin Stephenson Thing is, they're not trying to compare themselves, and that's the great thing, they will ever be as good as the famous 4 that started it all, and personally, I believe we'll never get as good as the likes as Ronnie, Luke, Ciaran and Barney ever again, but for me, as a singer, and for every other irish folk singer out there, which includes the Dublin Legends, we can only attempt to make their standard, and I think we need to respect the Dublin Legends for doing their best. If you can't try, what else can you do! And no offence meant if you're not convinced, I can't change your mind, what one guys opinion against another's, but there's always two sides to it, hope I adequately explained the other side

Sean is about 73 when this was made; even Luke's voice would have not been the same at that age. The fiddler is playing his second instrument - he is Gerry O'Connor almost universally acknowledged as the best Irish tenor banjo player ever (and I include Barney as a close second). Paul Watchorn is a better banjo player than Luke was. Ciaron never had a very strong voice. And the appreciation of any voice is very subjective. I comment as a "Dubliners" fan of nearly 55 years standing who saw the originals several times including at the Albert Hall in about 1969.
When I fronted my old NY bases Irish Band “Themselves” we opened up for Ronnie Drew around the time of Luke’s passing and I inquires what would happen in the Dubliners with Luke Gone. Ronnie replied that they had found a replacement for Luke in Sean Cannon and Ronnie described him as a very fine sweet singer..

Eammon Campbell does a great job on the late Ronnie Drew's classic, Seven drunken nights.
Eammon could do Irish Rover, Finnegan's Wake and other songs Ronnie use to do .

The only problem is that some of them are not old enough to be Legends: more Legends down the Pub
