Even though you didn't ask for it, here's some advice from someone who's been there and done that. First, the number of outlets in your studio. At the bare minimum, figure out how many AC outlets you need. Then double that number and add 10. That's how many you really need. Trust me. And since good lighting and computers rely on clean power, I'd go so far as have an electrician install a circuit breaker panel just for your studio, and then from that, make each outlet a home run to that panel and don't daisy chain them. And second, everyone is correct, CAT 5e will handle 10 gigabit. I've done it where there were no other options. But the time to run CAT [what ever is "the best" at that time you do it] to all your ports is *before you close up that basement ceiling*. While that ceiling is open, all you should need to replace your cable is a fish tape and the old cables. Once the ceiling is closed, it will be several orders of magnitude harder. So much so that I'd run a couple extra lines at each location and just leave them coiled up in the wall until needed. Sorry for the long sermon...let's pass the offering plate and turn your hymnals to page number 367, "Drop Kick Me Jesus Through the Goal Post of Life".
Cat5E does not support 10GB, it will only support 1GB. Cat6 will only support it for 55 meters and Cat6A will support it for 100 meters.
That's the neat thing about cables. They can't read specifications. The textbooks may say it won't work, but yes it will, so long as the cable isn't complete garbage. But that's irrelevant, because she needs to upgrade the cables anyway while she can easily do it.
New build should have a Whole-House Surge Protector
David Moore It doesn’t change the fact that 10GB won’t work over Cat5e. It being able to happen over short distances or intermittently doesn’t mean it “works”
David Moore Staying out of the Cat5e/Cat6+ debate, I definitely agree with your advice on everything else! It’s less a sermon than hard-won knowledge and common sense. Following your advice will save lots of frustration later.
"On this episode of Hak5 cribs..."

"And here's where the magic happens!" Opens the door to the server room.
Congrats on the new digs and change in life! I hope it's everything you hope it is!
Hey Congratulations Shannon !!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. The house looks awesome
Great rooms and livingrooms are different. Livingroom not connected to kitchen etc... Kneeders is good for the holiday pie supply! Our family just left CO for AZ.
Congrats! Looks like a nice place! Looking forward to seeing what you can do with the space!
Congrats!
I've wired up one of those structured wiring panels, they're decent for basic stuff but can get limiting pretty fast. I'd recommend replacing it with a wall-mounted patch panel and have a rack or cabinet in that little room for maximum flexibility.
For home automation, I'm a fan of Z-Wave as it's 900MHz so it doesn't interfere with wifi/Bluetooth, and Home Assistant for self-hosting all the automation aspects.
Good luck!
Congratulations! Hoping to hear more updates. We are currently looking to see if Colorado would be a good fit for us.
Congratulations on the new house. Here's to many many years of happiness in the new home
Congrats! You both look very happy! Especially your husband, he didn't stop smiling!
Congrats on the new house!! Wishing you guys all the best on this new journey!
Awesome! Congratulations to you both!
Congratulations on the new house. Can’t wait to see the journey with you.
Congratulation on the house! The house looks huuuuuge! Can't wait to see your productivity unleashed!
Congratulations on the new house Shannon and Keith! Beautiful house!
Can’t wait to see the next videos on your set up and moving. Subscribed! 👍🏻
Shannon your temporary upstairs Studio has great lighting and as you said in the video there is plenty of space for backdrops and alike. Great choice; looking forward to see what you do with it.
So excited for you!
Congrats! My wife and I just moved into a new house at the beginning of the year too. Similar timelines, thankfully no CES. 😉
One of best friends lives between Denver and Boulder. Visited a few times. Colorado is gorgeous. Good luck with the move (though I imagine at this point you’re well on your way).
Congratulations you two! It's a beautiful house.
Bread is life. So I totally relate on that. Excited to see what comes next!!!
Congratulations to you both, and welcome to the front range!!! 😁
Congratulations! Best wishes and good luck with the new house.
Congratulations!
I'm very much interested in following your progress setting up your new home.
Congrats on the new house! So exciting
Loved the update. 🙂 Looking forward to seeing more videos about the move, especially your choices in smart home tech.
I have a guest room for visitors! 😉😉
Congrats on the new house! Happy for you guys! Smiles on both your faces on the plane is great to see, Looking forward to watching you build the studio. I noticed a sump pump in the basement. As a person who has one, it will surprise you during video sessions during rainy season. 😬
Luckily we live on a hill!
Congratulations (from Delaware) on your new home. Very nice! Best of luck.
Congratulations to ya'll!!!!
Congratulations on your first house, you two will love it, of course filling it up will be costly. But I am sure lots of space to store tech.
I am so excited for you and your husband and family in general for making this great huge change. I would be greatly excited to see this transformation of your house. I also would like to see later later in the future building a DIY powerwall and backup generator. The one advice I give you is live with the space and don't try to hurry trying to fill it up. The most important feature of any home it's love that comes from the people inside of it. We will miss you here in the Bay Area .
Congratulations on the new home, when you plan your cat6 ethernet points, caculate what you need now and double or triple the number of sockets / cable runs for future expansion!
I am just catching up on your videos. Congrats on the new place.
Beautiful home, congrats! 👏
you bought the house because the house has 'the clapper' installed in basement lighting? neato!
Welcome to Colorado! Congratulations!
Hey Snubs welcome to snowy Colorado. Enjoy the CenturyLink fiber!
Woot Woot! You will love this state. So wonderful! It's so beautiful and four season. My wife and I build our house in 2018. I too was so excited to run my own cable, WAP speakers, outdoor cameras and network rack. 😁 🎉👍🎈❤️
You're gonna need Linus Tech Tips for that home lab.... 10Gb networking through the house, awesome access points and those home servers!
congratulations Shannon !!!
been waiting for this video, and I am a little jealous of you. Congrats
Congrats shann and to ur family!
Wish u always the best!
And thank you for let us take a peaj in ur new house 😊
Congrats on your new home
Congrats on the house!
Congrats! My number #1 tip, install outlets next to each toilet so you can install Toto Japanese toilets. GAME CHANGER!
I love Toto!
Darren has his chance. Congrats on your new home
Congratulations on your move to Colorado! Love Colorado! I went to school in Colorado Springs and travel to Denver often for work. I will be very interested in your videos/recommendations for home tech. We purchased our home almost 5 yrs ago and haven't done anything in the way of home automation with the exception of the Ring doorbell 🙄 and an irrigation system.
Congrats on your new home and adventure - looking forward to your videos on home networking and home automation :)
Congratulating Shannon!!
Congratulations on the new house!
Congrats - Welcome to Colorado! 90 days to acclimate... This is a great place to live! :):)
Congrats on the new house
Wow congrats on your new home
Congrats.
Congrats on your new home! I love bread too! Lol
Congrads on escaping California
Woot woot! And that temporary studio room... Once the basement badassery is finished, will that become a guest room? Just sayin' ... Tarah and I love to visit Denver! ;-)
Lucky you, the temp studio and the guest room are two different rooms! So we can have guests as soon as we get furniture!
@@ShannonMorse woot woot! :-)
Welcome to Denver! I recommend a trip to Echo lake and Mt Evans and Pike's Peak when you get the chance. If ya need suggestions, hit me up.
Congrats on your new home! Super jelly, having ethernet in all the rooms has always been my biggest dream haha
Wish I lived close. I would totally offer help in house wiring!
Congrats!
this is freaking amazing, and i love following ppl that moves into new houses and either does renovating or set up stuff... extreme makeover home edition - snubs style.
i am very happy for you two... poor keith tho... have to be a handy man from now on ;)
i will follow this new adventure with you and your amazing snubs hubs in colorado... all i know of colorado is that is where NORAD/cheyenne mountain and stargate are located ....
goood call on the Cat6, but if your network are 5e cables they should be oki for gigabit network tho
looking forward to follow it all.. congrats both of you
I can see my cats shredding the hell out of that insulation padding on the walls down in the basement...
(Also, Cat5e is rated for 10gb, just not over as long a distance as Cat6. You good.)
Congratulations on the new house you two! now it's time to turn it into a "HOME"
Nice, hey now that you are going to have your own studio consider this I loved tekzilla an when Patrick did HD Nation I'd love to see your show expanded to enclude more such content an hour and a half long show would be great
Congrats! Enjoy! I've never seen a closet with a window either. XD
It was really fun to watch how excited you are about your new place. I hope you do a series on this. I have a lot of non-techie friends that I would subscribe it to. :-)
Congrats! Looking forward to seeing more on this new studio and home automation devices with security and privacy in mind. Good luck with all the great changes coming ahead!
Depending on the length of those runs and how well they are done, you should be fine with cat5e for 10g networking. If you plan to rerun with cat6/7, I would suggest you double the number of cables for each run (if it has 1 port, pull for 2). Will always need an extra port at some point and will be a huge pain to do it afterwards. Some brands of cables/jacks can be a bit finicky when it comes to performance when testing using something like a fluke cable tester but shouldn't affect actual performance too much. Make sure the patch panel termination is for cat6 if you go with that. Always add extra outlets as well as those are never enough.
Depending on the number of runs, you might want to consider 24 or 48 port switch. Possibly some small network/server rack to put everything in.
I'm not sure about colorado, but in some states (like mine) you need to file a plan and a permit to pull even networking cable....
Yay for great husbands! Congrats on the nice new home! 🍾🥂
He's a great guy 🥰 we did this together, through both of our successes.
Congratulations again Shannon I'm very happy for you two. What's the unfinished basement please lots of great opportunities for you you should be able to run Cat6 are faster down there you should be able to find your connection to that one room if you have any need any help let me know.
Welcome to Colorado Neighbor!
Yay networking goodness to come soon. Hmm, I have Cat6.....like 300m in a box sitting.....
I look forward to a future episode of Cribs.
curious as to how this will impact Mr Snubs work life. don't know if you covered it before. I would love to move where I can see mountains ever day, but finding a new job in another state seems kinda daunting.
let's get you sponsored by Ubiquiti..... I love their Unifi products!!!!
Congrats! Excited for you!
I travel between DEN & SFO a few times a year (mostly fly, but also drive or train).
Carbs help w/altitude 1st day (no booze 1st day)
At least once try the Zephyr train (plan ahead best$$ for private sleeper).
Frontier Air bargain den, competes w/SW, worth it.
Gas is cheap, but toll road fasttrack adds up, be advised.
The CA to CO southern 5 state route (lol AZ for about a minute) is worth the extra time from NorCal to SoCal, soooo beautiful if you end up driving at all.
Hope you love having real four seasons again. (ps: Starbucks is really nice, but try Caribou Coffee sometime for amazingly delicious) ☕
first! :) congratz!!! greetz from BeeGee (Bulgaria)
Congrats! Now setup a comm's room and better wiring before you move in.
Nice work 😊👍
Just a quick tip next time you get a new pair of glasses have them add a anti-reflective coating to it it's a little pricey but well worth it. It might help out in those situations where there is glare off your lenses and for me it helps especially for cutting down on glare from fluorescent light sources because I am visually handicapped add need every bit of vision without reflection as possible
They actually do have the anti-reflective upgrade because i need it for night driving, but studio lights do reflect off of glass no matter what, especially in small spaces.
Congrats on the new place. It looks like some much more space. Family and I are pretty much sure we are going to get out of the California area too. I've always thought if I had my own place, I would want to get that ethernet run in the entire house :)
Well done guys......great to see your new prems........looking great! In case I missed it, are you still with Hak5? ❤️❤️
Yes! I am filming new eps of ThreatWire every week and will be covering defcon this summer :)
@@ShannonMorse so looking forward to it. Keep up the great work! ❤️😎❤️🇺🇸🇬🇧
One of the nice things is that with a mortgage is that your "rent" is fixed for the next 15 - 30 years
So I hope you bought a house with awesome internet access. :)
I haven't really seen this side of you because I've really only seen you on threatwire. But I do have one major question: you said that you have always had an echo in your previous videos, how do you get rid of that?
And you are right about wanting to keep your privacy. There are a lot of creeps out there.
Hi Shannon is google mini safe for use in home and bedrooms I am on about security and privacy if you could answer that would be nice thank you congratulations on your new home shannon see you 😊
She's a bit worried about someone listening into a private conversation. Even if hasn't been activated.
Maybe you where busy that's why you don't answer that's ok see you 🙂🤗
missed out on that chance to do an MTV Cribs parody Shannon ;)
Think if you finish the basement you may get an echo...if you like the sound don’t mess with it too much!
Yes, putting up drywall will create an echo, so I'll be investing in auralex panels. I'm considering leaving the ceiling open..
Congrats! Lennar home?
Oh Shannon, don't get cheap. CAT6 is a onetime investment and saves you lots of troubleshooting hours. While the copper might be able to perform the crimps are definitely a problem. Just slaughter your second piggybank and be happy :)
Hahaha! So the question is cat6... Or do I go full on cat8? (Not that I could afford it)
@@ShannonMorse if you want to go above 10Gbps you should think Cat8 or fiber ... but ...
all those hardware gets pretty expensive - for now. If you're planing to go professional at home making your home office future proof build your walls with flexible cable pipes, so you can replace wiring easier. Especially if you choose fiber you can get forced to replace it one day (fiber is mechanical very brittle and can get damaged very easily.
Why not talk to Linus Tech and your "buddy" Darren or any IT guy you really trust. It's all a balance of cost, security and necessity.
You should check out Outlaw and also the Boostedboz they both live in Colorado and have big UA-cam channels! 🦅🇺🇸🦅
I love bread too, kissed my skinny life goodbye. lol
FC fiber or bust
when you move talk to brian ibbot and nicole spagnola they are great
If you break your lease, your landlord has to try to re-rent the home and if they re-rent it, they can't penalize you for that time.
You can get 10gig over CAT5e....
She talks non stop poor guy didn't get a word in
You should watch the build video I had him on for. Fwiw: my husband is not a host on this channel. I am. He pops on from time to time but we don't practice any of the videos I have him on for, so it's never as well versed as my solo videos.
