    I think it would be better if signing was the same in every language. If everyone would learn it we had a language that everyone understands. But we still own our culture with our speaking language

      I think it's wonderful that there are so many sign languages. There are way more spoken languages and all languages have a shared culture and history that is evident within the speech itself. I appreciate the fact that there are so many ways we all express ourselves. I know ASL but I also want to learn BSL and JSL and maybe even an African sign language if I can find the resources

      Olivia I think she might have had speech therapy and probably has to guess what a letter or word sounds like. She is hard to understand. If you met her in person and didn't know sign it might be easier for her to write to you and you write to her back and forth. Of course, on here she can put captions on her videos, and comment on here with text.

    Hi, don't know if anyone commented on this yet, but just saw the video so I'll comment on it now: speech therapy isn't only about speech :) I work as a sign language teacher and work together with speech therapists. And they put a lot of time and effort into the structure of the spoken language as well and pronunciation. And if someone is profoundly deaf and the prononciation is hard with every new word, they usually drop that part when kids grow older (about 10 or 12) and focus more on structure of sentences and practising with lip reading. And it makes sense: every spoken language knows thousands and thousands of words: imagine having to practice the prononciation of every one of them. It is a waste of time and gets you frustrated along the way as well. So I hope you're glad in the end that they put a lot of time in your English! Because your written English seems really strong and that gives you a lot of career opportunities :)

    I think she's right, learning sign language is beneficial for all babies, hearing and deaf, for hearing babies it can mean being able to communicate before they're able to reproduce the sounds of speech, which would eliminate a lot of the frustration of those early stages. I also use it (the *very little* ASL that I know) to teach English to my younger hearing Spanish students, because assigning a sign to every word helps them remember it so much better. Specially for us Spaniards, gesturing while we speak comes so naturally, we can't help it, so why not use that instinct to learn another language, which has so many benefits all-around! I'm so upset I wasn't taught any sign language at school growing up. Luckily my one deaf friend is excellent at reading lips and is *so patient* with my crappy signing 😭

    I love your channel, I am hearing but I choose to learn ASL instead of Spanish or Chinese for 3 years in high school it was really cool! It’s a very useful language to know, I remember when I worked at McDonald’s there was a deaf or hard of hearing man that came in and he would always come right up to me cause he knew I could communicate with him properly. It made me feel like I did something right.

You are awesome! I'm only 11 but someday I hope I can become more fluent in ASL

I started teaching him a few signs so he could communicate with us better. Things like down, more, please, all done, eat. He’s 2 now, still not a huge talker its more baby talk mixed with works. But he still uses his signs and talks verbally! He uses please the most, because he knows it will get him whatever he wants haha. It might not be an entire language but I’m still proud of myself for teaching him! I hope to teach him other language as he gets older!

      @@el3743 you can fellow classes, there are even a lot classes on the internet or in real life.
      Using talking and signing can be seen as as two language. (or signing can support the speech) babys/children can use talking and signing by eachother. Learning words will go faster by using speechs and signing together. It will give the child more ways to learn the words. :)
      Also, some sounds will develop later at a particular age (like the /r/ around the age of 6). A child can feel a lot more confident to "sign" the words instead of talking.

    Little Jazzy is TOO cute OMG she is so happy with her signing I love it ♥ Jazzy you do great with your voice! for someone who has never heard a voice or your own you do great!
    Honestly I feel like learning sign language should be part of every school because I dont think Deaf people should have to accommodate and use their voice if they arent comfortable just to talk with a hearing person, I really wish I had learned another language, especially sign language growing up, I know the basics, but in ASL I can tell my name and ask how you are and say nice to meet you but I wish I knew more. I was teaching myself but I have issues with my hands so its hard for me to do it without being in pain :/

    I love the book idea! I’m hard of hearing in both ears from being on ECMO and I’m due to have a baby boy any day. I want to teach him sign so he doesn’t have to struggle to communicate with me. I never learned sign growing up, the therapists told my parents I wouldn’t want to speak if I learned sign but today it’s obviously encouraged that even hearing kids learn to sign. I took ASL over a year ago and it was fun but I barely remember it 😅

    What a cute baby!! I agree that schools should teach BSL to a certain level so more and more deaf children can be integrated into "mainstream" schools. Good luck with your speech therapy. I remember having to blow a ping pong ball across the table and they used to smear ( rub) honey over my top lip, though I can not remember why

    As a speech therapist working with deaf teenagers I’d just like to just say that the job of a speech therapist is not just about saying words. It’s about language, and social skills, and vocabulary, and voice, and soooooo many different things. It’s likely that your speech therapist felt there was a reason they wanted to work on language. I know I have some students who are difficult to understand because they might be missing some of the English grammatical markers, so we work on it. However it’s really important that we listen to the views of our clients, so if you’d like to go back to speech therapy I hope you will. Be assertive and let them know what it is you hope to gain!

  • @Voldemorti
    @Voldemorti 5 років тому +1

    This might sound ignorant but I am genuinely wondering and I'd be so grateful if someone had an answer to this:
    Obviously deaf babies learn sign language from their parents, but I just don't quite understand how. When someone is speaking to the baby, the baby might not initially understand the words, but it can hear the tone and understand emotions. But with sign language, the person signs without a tone, and only then the action happens. So for example, you can't feed a baby and sign at the same time if the baby likes it. You always have to do it before or after the action. So how does the baby pick up on the signs?

    • @clairee4939
      @clairee4939 4 роки тому +1

      In sign language "tone" is expressed by facial expressions. I didn't understand the last part sorry.

    I learned a bit of bsl when I was a baby,I used to have seizures when younger so I couldn’t develop speech as fast as the other kids so when I was 5 I could speak full sentences not just words, like at 4 I could only say short sentences like “play at park” but when I turned 5 I could say things like “ please can we go play at the park” and my mom knew I wouldn’t be able to develop speech as fast so I would only spend 1 day a week at school up till that age because kids would just talk and talk and talk to me but I wouldn’t understand and I would have something similar to a panic attack but at 2-5 I’m 11 now but speech still affects me a bit like instead of saying used I say ‘yose’ I’m trying to get out of the habit now because whenever I say it during school kids make fun of me for it. I learned ‘dog’ ‘mamma milk' ‘dad’ and a few more. Sometimes I spend 3 or 4 days a week at school because of the same reason but most of the time I spend 5 :)

      That's exactly the same as for speaking though. I don't think it would be cool if everyone in the world spoke the same language. That would be sad. It would be like if there was only one kind of tree in the world, only one kind of fruit, only one kind of mammal. The world isn't meant to be uniform.
