You're wrong. There is nothing "Native American" about the rhythms or the harmonies- they're all Czech and built on the pentatonic scale as well as traditional European harmony. The third movement is a theme and variations on "My Country 'Tis of Thee," about as American as you can get. The whole "Indian" thing is a myth. And a lil' racist.
@@daviewavie112 The love of a certain musical composition can often defy description by mere words, so perhaps it's the opening 2nd viola solo in pentatonic, or the general energy and beauty of the piece or how the parts feed off each other or the variety of melodies just within the first few minutes of the first movement! I can't put my finger on exactly one thing that I love about this piece, so I guess just everything about it makes it my favorite, well, plus, Dan Koo was in my student orchestra many years ago. Very talented musician. All of these musicians are!

Virtually unknown next to his other so-called "American" works (the New World Symphony, and even the American Quartet), it's as good (or better) than both. The relative anonymity is due to quintets (unlike symphonies and quartets) being not a standard genre and are created by a quartet essentially hiring a "temp" extra instrumentalist. Yet many quintets, such as Mozart's, the Schubert and the Brahms are among chamber music's finest works in any form.
Got it. So here's the deal. At precisely 11:48 the violist plays a double stop (two notes at the same time) in a melody where at every other instance there is just one not played. It sounds "out of place" to me. In listening to about 25 UA-cam performances of this quintet, there are two where the violist does not play the double stop. The rest do. There is no question that the score and part indicate the double stop. My theory is that the score and parts are in error. Perhaps a smudge on the autograph manuscript made the copyist think that Dvoralk wanted two notes to be played. This isn't the first time a copyist altered a Dvorak score. In the last movement of Dvorak's opus 96 string quartet (The American) there is a two-measure section where the violist plays the wrong rhythm. It doesn't sound bad, and there is one professional quartet, aware of the error, who indicated to me that they preferred the error. But it is an error, none-the-less (my source is an editor at Henle). The error is found in Kalmus scores. And the error is in the part and not in the score. My hunch is that this is an error as well, although it appears in both score and parts. I do not have access to the autograph manuscript or the person who does hold it, so, for now, it is just my hunch. To me, it sounds "out of place." I invite you to start at 11:40 and listen through to 11:55 and tell me if you find the double stop at 11:47-11:48 to sound right.
As I mentioned, there are two performances on UA-cam where the double stop was not played. There were professional string quartets with an added professional violist. They must agree with me.
